LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JUNE 21, 2015
2015 Constituent
Questionnaire Results
by Senator Ranzenhofer
June, 2015
As your State Senator, your
views are important to me; your
input helps me to best represent
you, your family and our community. Earlier this year, I offered
residents an opportunity to share
their opinions with me in a 2015
Constituent Questionnaire.
The 2015 Constituent Questionnaire collected input on a
number of important legislative
issues, including New York’s
economy, Common Core, minimum wage, and more. Thousands
of residents, all across the 61st
Senate District, filled out the
14-question survey either by mail,
via Facebook or at my website.
The results of the questionnaire
have been compiled, and I would
like to share some of the figures
with you:
• Eighty-four percent of respondents opposed the New York
Dream Act, a bill introduced by
several downstate legislators
to allow undocumented, illegal
immigrants to receive state financial aid.
• Only eight percent characterized New York State’s economy
as poor.
• Over fifty percent are satisfied with the quality of our local
public schools.
• Forty-seven percent oppose
increasing the minimum wage for
a third time.
A complete summary of results
has been posted on my website,
ranzenhofer.nysenate.gov. I
encourage residents to visit my
website to check out the results
for each of the 14 questions.
The responses for two particu-
lar questions were overwhelming.
Three out of every four residents
expressed their support for making the property tax cap permanent, and seventy-eight percent
of residents strongly support
the STAR and Enhanced STAR
programs.
It is important to note that property tax relief continues to be, as
it always has been, one of my
highest priorities. I will continue
to lead the fight to provide more
relief for property taxpayers,
since there is more work to be
done on this issue.
Recently, I voted to approve a
bill that will make the property
tax cap permanent. The State
Senate has taken action to keep
the cap to ensure that we never
return to the days of skyrocketing
budgets and spiraling tax increases. If the State Assembly doesn’t
take action, the property tax cap
will expire.
While the property tax cap
hasn’t solved all of our problems,
it has helped to encourage fiscal
discipline and keeping a lid on
tax increases. In fact, according
to a recent study, taxpayers have
saved more than $7.6 billion
since the cap was first enacted
four years ago. In 2015-16 alone,
homeowners are expected to save
a total of $3.3 billion in school
taxes.
Making the property tax cap
permanent remains one of my top
priorities. Simply put, we cannot
afford to let the tax cap expire.
By working together, we can get
the State Assembly to join with
us in protecting and extending the
property tax cap without delay!

Notes
What a beautiful
day for a Rotary meeting and it was a special day indeed! First
of all, we’re used to
having visiting Rotarians attend each week
as our meetings are
so fun and efficient,
however, today we
were joined by Roger
Wilson of the Ottawa
Club ! He and some
friends are traveling throughout
the Northeast and he looked us
up. We were also joined by Kate
Flint and her son Brock to
accept a Rotary donation for
Youth Wrestling.
And today was extra-special as
we inducted Christie LoTempio
into our ranks. Christie is an
integral member of the Muller
team and we welcomed her as the
World’s newest Rotarian!
Announcements included our
Rotary Excited About Literature
(REAL) book give away is June
27th and book donations are
still being accepted at Tompkins
Bank of Castile. Our Installation
Dinner (aka Change-over) is
June 24th.
We welcomed back Lynne
Belluscio, Jim Ellison, Tracy
Ford, Phil Weise and Jerry McCullough. All had make-ups or
Green Cards to clear up the attendance records. Larry Boylan was
also welcomed back and brought
us up-to-speed on where he and
Sherye have traveled so far this
year. He was happy to report that
they have now visited each of our
50 states!
Bruce Baker was called on to
tell the group about his son...
Col. John Baker was nominated

Holiday Hours
by President Obama on June
4 for promotion to Brigadier
General and to be the Chief
Defense Counsel for Military
Commissions, an Alexandria,
Virginia-based position that entails oversight of defense counsel
at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Jerry McCullough was delighted
to report that his daughter Lizzy
has turned 21. It was kind of a
big deal when the President of the
American Alliance of Museums
(AAM) dropped by LeRoy House
and the Jell-O Museum. Ford Bell
certainly surprised and delighted
Lynne Belluscio with his impromptu visit and it was quite clear
that she enjoyed the opportunity to
host. What a great honor!
Program today was a presentation on the emerging market
of telehealth, telemental health
and telemedicine solutions by
Dan Cote, President of Fortified

Wooden Union Tool Chests
by Lynne Belluscio
A couple of months ago, I
was contacted by Ted Johnson
who is writing a guide to wooden
machinist’s tool chests. He was
interested in the Union Tool Chest
Company which had relocated to
LeRoy from Rochester in 1932. It
was founded in 1892 and originally manufactured drafting tables
and medical instrument cases
which resembled fine furniture.
Soon the company was manufacturing wooden machinist’s boxes
with felt lined drawers.
In the 1920s, it began manufacturing metal utility and tool
chests. When the parent company
went into receivership in 1931,
three former executives of the
Rochester company, decided to
move production to LeRoy. The
factory was located in the building on the east side of Church
Street, along the railroad tracks.
The large stone building was
the former LeRoy Cotton Mill.
(This massive building burned in
1949.) Union Tool Chest became
Union Steel Chest.
Union pioneered the first fully
seamless metal fishing tackle box
and cover in 1947. The cases were
manufactured elsewhere and
“trimmed” in LeRoy. During the
years that Union Steel Chest was
in LeRoy, it is estimated that 13
million tool boxes, utility boxes
and other types of metal boxes
were manufactured and distributed throughout the world.
Many were used by the armed
forces during World War II. At
one time the company employed
about 125 men and women
from LeRoy and vicinity. In
1973, the company relocated
to Chandler, Arizona and four
years later was bought out by
competitors. The facilities
in Arizona were closed in
1984 and inventories were
auctioned.
The wooden tool chests,
which were manufactured
until 1951, have become collectors items, often selling for
a couple hundred dollars. The
one that I have was purchased
by my husband in an antique
shop in Rhode Island. It
was in pretty good condition
and he lightly refinished the
quarter-sawn oak and replaced
the green felt. I use it for
a jewelry case.
Originally it was used
by a machinist to hold a
variety of precision tools
such as micrometers, inside and outside calipers,
punches, dies, and gauges. Looking through the
Union catalogue, I know
that I have an Improved
Style B with knobs on
the drawers. Usually the
chests have small recessed rings for pulls, but
only Union manufactured
drawers with knobs. One
of the knobs was broken,
and Ted Johnson, sent me
a replacement, which is just the
right size.
One of the men who brought
Union Tool Chest to LeRoy was
Seeley Pratt’s father. Seeley
continued with the company after
his father’s death, and moved to
Arizona. After the company was
bought out, he returned to LeRoy
and lived on East Main Street.
He was the “official” Union
Steel Chest historian, and people
often contacted him when they
wanted information about the
tackle boxes or tool chests. All
of his notes and catalogues are
now in the archives and provide a
lot of information about a former
industry in LeRoy.

Indians, #2 Orioles vs #7 Tigers, #6 Yankees

played June 22-25. So please come on down
to the Little League and keep supporting
the players!!
Orioles 10 A’s 4
The Orioles and A’s squared off for the
3rd time this season on Monday night.
The Orioles struck first when after Adam
Risewick reached base and Tyler Strollo
singled, Alex Panepento connected for his
first career dinger, a 3-run shot over the
left field wall. Not to be outdone, A’s star
Chase Bordonaro connected in the bottom
of the first for his first career homer, leaving
the score at 3-1 Orioles after 1 inning. The
Orioles would get back on the board in the
3rd, after Panepento doubled, Cory Wallace
singled, and Connor Wright doubled to
extend the lead to 5-1. Back to it in the top
of the 4th, the Orioles scored 2 more on
another Panepento double, plating Risewick
and Tyler Strollo. Panepento would score on
a passed ball. Drew Strollo then laid down
a bunt, and would ultimately score after
speeding around the bases after an errant
throw to first base attempting to throw him
out. The A’s answered in the bottom of the
4th with 2 runs, powered by a triple by Brian
Roblee, an RBI single by Brady Fix, and an
RBI by Luke Rider, leaving the score at 9-3.
Both teams would score another late run,
resulting in a final score of 10-4 in favor
of the Orioles.
Aidan Robinson and Brady Fix pitched
for the A’s. Chase Bordonaro homered and
singled, Brian Roblee tripled and scored,
and Jackson Fix singled. Brady Fix tripled,
singled, had an RBI and scored twice, while
Connor McGee singled and Luke Rider
had an RBI.
Alex Panepento had a complete game
on the mound for the Orioles, striking out
3 while only walking 1. He also enjoyed
another monster game at the plate, going
3-3 with a homer, 2 doubles, 3 runs and 4
RBI. Adam Risewick also added 3 hits and
3 runs. Ty Strollo singled twice with 2 runs,
and younger brother Drew singled with a run
and RBI. Cory Wallace added a hit, scored
and also drove a run in. Connor Wright
doubled and Finn Shelby drove in 2 runs.
White Sox 9 Indians 2
The Indians and White Sox squared
off Wednesday night. The White Sox got
a quick start as Kenny Saunders lead off
with a single and would later score on a
hit by Bryce Lathan making the score 1 -0
after 1 inning. Zach Vanderhoof started
on the mound for the Indians and held the
White Sox to just 1 run through 2 innings
of play. Kenny Saunders got things started
for the White Sox in the top of the third
with a solo home run shot. Ryan Friend hit
a single and would later score to make the
score 3-0 after 3 innings of play. Kenny
Saunders was the starting pitcher for the
White Sox and pitched a shutout until the
bottom of the fourth when Shawn Morabito
hit a double and would later score on hit by
Matt Roloson. Matt Roloson would later
score to make the score White Sox 3 Indians
2 game after 4 innings of play. The White
Sox would add 6 runs in the top of the 5th

Condidorio pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.

with 2 singles, Jack Duyssen with a single

his first little league hit.
Twins 3 Red Sox 2
The Twins and the Red Sox played for the
third time this season. The Twins pulled off
the 1-0 victory on opening day, and the Red
Sox won the second match up. With playoff
positioning on the line this would be a most
interesting rubber match.
The Red Sox didn’t waste any time
getting the offense going. Andrew Loftus
started things off with a lead off single
followed by a Johnny Panepento double.
Grant Gilligan drove them both in with a
single and the Sox would take a two run
advantage. In the bottom of the first the
Twins came out swinging as well. Colin
McCulley led off lacing a single into center
field. After a stolen base and a passed ball
McCulley would be on third. Joey Brennan
hit him in with a single.
After the first inning hits proved to be
difficult to come by. Andrew Loftus pitched
well, striking out eight batters before being
relieved by Grant Gilligan. The Twins used
three pitchers who would combine for
twelve strike outs while only surrendering
six hits. Cole Rauscher started, Colin McCulley came in relief and Ethan Beswick
closed it out.
The Red Sox were ahead 2-1 for most of
the game, but in the fifth inning the Twins
offense came alive. Colin McCulley reached
base with a walk. Ethan Beswick would get
on with a single. Then with two outs and two
on Cole Rauscher ripped the ball down the
left field line for a triple that brought home
McCulley and Beswick with the tying and
game winning runs. They led the offense for
the Twins. McCulley scored twice and had a
single. Beswick scored once and also had a
single. Cole Rauscher had a triple, and Joey
Brennan a RBI single.
Grant Gilligan had a great game at the
plate for the Red Sox. He came through with
a triple and two singles. Johnny Panepanto
had a double, and Andrew Loftus had a
pair of singles

Orioles 10 Twins 2
The Orioles and Twins opened up the
final Saturday day of baseball at the LL Field
on a damp field. The Twins struck early in
the 1st inning, when Joey Brennan scored
Cole Rauscher on a single. The Orioles
answered back in the bottom of the 1st,
using plate discipline to draw a few walks.
Eventually a big double by Connor Wright
scored Finn Shelby and Drew Strollo to give
the Orioles a 3-1 lead after 1.
Both pitching staffs settled down until the
Orioles struck with a big six run 4th inning.
Joey Stephany started the inning with a single, and would be driven in shortly after by
a Ty Strollo single. Another single by Alex
Panepento would load the bases, and Finn
Shelby cleared the bases with a big triple.
Consecutive singles by Cory Wallace, Connor Wright, and another single by Stephany
would finish the scoring in the 4th, giving
the Orioles a 9-1 lead. Colin McCulley
would score in the 5th for the Twins, and
the Orioles answered back with a Ty Strollo
single plating Adam Risewick, finishing the
scoring off 10-2 with the Orioles victorious.
Cole Rauscher (1 K), Colin McCulley
(6 Ks), and Joey Brennan shared pitching
duties for the Twins. Offensively, McCulley

and scored, and Brennan singled and had

and an RBI. Aaron Leone added a double
for the Yankees and scored 1 run. Hitting
stars for the Indians were Zach Vanderhoof

Shawn Morabito hit his first home run of his
little league career with a towering shot over
the left field wall. This came after Shawn’s
earlier trip to the plate where he hit a line
drive shot to left field that bounced over
the wall for a ground rule double. Shawn
ended the day going 2 for 3 plus earned a
walk. He would score 2 runs and get 1 RBI.
Landen Saeva went 2 for 2 at the plate and

In the final game of the regular season
for both clubs, the 1st place White Sox took

fest and ended in a final of 18-15 A’s. Both

home runs each by Brady Fix from the A’s
and Ryan Friend from the White Sox.
The A’s got multi-hit games by Chase

Friend, Jason LaSage, Mike Buccina and
Alex Dowell. Bryce Lathan had 4 runs,
while Friend, Andrew Kettle and Buccina
each had 2. Kettle, LaSage and Bryce
Lathan struck out 11 A’s batters while
walking ten.

Cup with a 14-2 overall record and the first
seed in the Scanlan Cup playoffs. The A’s
finished 8-8 and will have the 5th seed in
the playoffs.
Tigers 8 Red Sox 3
The final regular season game of 2015
was played between the Tigers and Red
Sox. The Tigers plated two in the top half
of the first behind a walk by Gianni Ferrara,
singles by Giavanni Caccamise, James
Blake, Jackson Spezzano and a double by
Cam Greene. The Red Sox responded with
one of their own in the bottom of the first
on a run scored by John Panepento after a
lead off walk. The Tigers scored 4 more
runs in the second to make the score 6-1.
The highlight being a 2 run homerun to left
field by Cam Greene. The Red Sox half
of the second inning was highlighted by a
hard hit single to left field by Cole Ashley
to record his first hit of the season. In the
third inning the Tigers twice more crossed
home plate. After a lead off walk by Dylan
Maciag, Gianni Ferrara tripled then Luke
Caccamise singled to score Ferrara. The
