On November 6, it will be submitted to the America’s Best Communities judges for their review for the next step in the contest, yet if LeRoy and Bergen proceed no further, we have a revitalization plan that can be used for many other applications. On Monday night, Alyson and Rob met in a public forum at the Auditorium on Trigon Park, to seek additional input. Everyone had the opportunity to review the Vision Statement: “Our economy is grounded in strong agricultural and food production industries, a resilient manufacturing sector, and vibrant village centers. Our proactive economic development investments provide the foundation for sustainable, long-term growth. Our communities maintain a high quality lifestyle and livelihood through a collaborative ethic of adaptation and reinvention and by leveraging our historic and natural assets.” As Rob and Alyson said, this vision statement is unique to LeRoy and Bergen and focuses on our specific needs and plans for the future. There are two main goals of the plan. The first is to develop a broader tax base to support a higher quality of life. Within this goal are several action points that will enable this goal to be met, not the least of which is to develop infrastructure - - gas, broadband and sewers. The second goal is to ensure that LeRoy and Bergen “A LOCAL FAMILY CARING FOR LOCAL FAMILIES” "Complete Carpentry Service" FALCONE FAMILY MILLER BROTHERS BUILDERS Funeral & Cremation Service, Inc. Custom Homes • Remodeling • Additions Roofing • Siding DANIEL 1-585-409-3193 are attractive communities to live, work and play. Suggestions from the audience included - housing and encouraging educational opportunities in workforce training will be incorporated into the final plan. We’d like to thank all the folks who joined us for this meeting and we appreciate your constructive comments. We all sincerely believe that LeRoy and Bergen have what it takes to anticipate a prosperous future. We know that it takes patience, work and commitment and we are ready. Vern C. The word alone is enough to send shivers down the spines of most people, especially when it strikes close to home, either in yourself or a loved one. Yet, the outlook for people with cancer is, in many cases, better than ever before due to medical breakthroughs, research and education. As is often the case with chronic illness, education is key to early detection in the fight against cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. The good news is that the survival rate, when detected early, is very high. In the United States alone, there are 2.5 million breast cancer survivors which can be attributed to earlier detection and better treatment. The best protection is early detection. By recognizing the symptoms of breast cancer, even when some appear to be inconsequential, women can seek medical attention early, if needed, thereby increasing survival rates. The American Cancer Society recommends that every woman have a baseline mammogram by age 40, then a screening mammography every year thereafter. However, every woman should consult with her doctor about this issue. $HOP, DINE & WIN - LE ROY! While many people know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, others may not know that October 16th is National Mammography Day. It is an important day to raise awareness about this life-saving screening and to encourage women to schedule an appointment for a mammogram screening. In August, I was glad that so many women took advantage of mammogram screenings at my Family Health Fair. I partnered with the Mobile Mammography Coach to offer the screening for the first time this year. In the 2015-16 State Budget, I worked with my colleagues in the State Senate to secure a $200,000 state grant, administered by the State Department of Health, to increase outreach initiatives to individuals impacted by breast cancer and to provide expanded cancer services in our region. This funding is much needed since some of the counties in Western New York have the highest rates of breast cancer in the State. Later this month, I will be hosting a round table discussion with survivors of breast cancer to learn about their experiences following the diagnosis. The program will be facilitated by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. Join us for an important conversation on October 30th at 1 o’clock in the afternoon at the YWCA of Genesee County. I wish to renew my commitment on working with Steve Barbeau, Tom Stella, Dave Paddock and John Duyssen on the Town Board and ask for you to renew your commitment in me. Thank you, John Armitage Paid for by LeRoy Republican Party LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 25, 2015 Sugar Helps Make Lemons Into Charlotte LeRoy’s Lemon Cheesecake by Lynne Belluscio On November 7, I am scheduled to share some of the research that I am doing on the 1823 manuscript receipt book that belonged to Charlotte LeRoy – Jacob’s wife. She was born in 1800 in Boston. We don’t know much about her early life. We know that she had a sister Helen (who married her husband’s cousin – who was also named Jacob LeRoy) and that Charlotte had two other siblings who died very young. Her father, Thomas Otis, was a merchant and in 1820, was in New York City. At some point the family moved to France and it was said that Thomas made a fortune in Europe. In 1821, Charlotte’s mother died in France and was buried there. The family history indicates that Charlotte was educated in France, but that has not been proven. On May 20, 1822, Charlotte Downes Otis married Jacob LeRoy in New York City. The date in the receipt book is June 16, 1823, Pelham, New York. Her first child, Thomas was born a few weeks later on July 9, 1823. It is speculated that he was born in LeRoy, but at least one source indicates he was born in New York City – only a few miles from Pelham. (Pelham is actually in the Bronx.) The LeRoy family owned property in Pelham and I now believe that Thomas was not born in LeRoy but in New York City - - perhaps Pelham. There are many recipes in the little book, and according to Peter Rose, a noted author and authority on Dutch history and Dutch food, at least ten of the recipes are of Dutch origin. (More on the Dutch recipes later.) Many of the other recipes include lemons, oranges, and even limes. Think about that - - - where did lemons, oranges and limes come from in 1823? Certainly not Florida or California. From what I can find out, most of the oranges and lemons came from Spain and the Mediterranean region. Picked green, they were packed in boxes and shipped to New York, sometimes taking weeks before being sold. The benefits of lemon juice to alleviate scurvy had been known for a long time, especially on shipboard during long months at sea. So apparently Charlotte wanted to make sure she had all her recipes for lemon cake, and pudding, and lemon drops, and lemon cheesecake written down for her move to the frontier town named after her father-in-law. I have to wonder, how many of those lemon recipes did she use after she came here, but maybe she had boxes of lemons shipped from New York City to LeRoy. With lemons, it was necessary to have sugar, and preferably white refined sugar that came in cones. Most of the folks in LeRoy probably used maple sugar that they could make themselves, but the LeRoy family had the money to buy white cone sugar. So I did a little more research and was surprised at what I discovered. I knew that the source of sugar came through the islands in the Caribbean, produced by slave labor. But what I didn’t know, was that most of the sugar refineries were located in New York City. As early as 1730, sugar was being refined in New York at a refinery owned by Nicholas Bayard. By 1760, sugar refineries were owned by leading families – the Van Cortlandt’s, Cuylers, and Roosevelts. In 1764, British Parliament passed the Sugar Act which taxed all raw sugar coming into American ports. This taxation helped to fuel the need for the Revolutionary War. After the British captured New York City, they used the large brick sugar refineries for prisoners. Conditions in the sugar house prisons were horrendous and many men died. But after the war, the sugar refineries went back into production and expanded. By 1870, almost half of the sugar consumed in the United States was refined in just one New York refinery. By 1882, the American Sugar Refining Company was the largest refinery in the world. In May 1896, American Sugar Company became one of the original 12 companies listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. By 1907, 98% of the sugar used in the United States was refined in New York City. (So it stands to reason, that all the sugar shipped to LeRoy for the production of Jell-O, came from New York City.) In 2000, the sugar industry in New York City was devastated by a strike that lasted nearly two years. In 2004, refining operations stopped at the huge Domino refinery. The Domino refinery site was declared a National Historical Landmark, and there are plans for adaptive use of the buildings. LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 25, 2015 A Vote For Us Is A Vote For You BOB SCOTT for TOWN SUPERVISOR It’s time to make a change in this GREAT community of ours! We need your support to help bring in new businesses and help our current businesses grow and prosper. This upcoming election is essential in order to start these changes. We NEED your vote- every vote matters. Let your voice be heard on November 3rd! JUSTIN CACCAMISE for TOWN COUNCIL The incumbents say that they need four more years so they can make a positive change in LeRoy. I only ask, what has changed in the past four years that would warrant that opportunity? I personally don’t want four more years of existing/new business being stifled, more homes vacant, tax rates that they claim can’t be reduced, and no growth in any other important area. This is not to say that the incumbents are not good people, merely that they lack the vision and drive that I would bring to the board. Vote for change! ERIC STAUFFER for HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT Democracy is not about popularity or entitlement; it is about electing the candidate who will do the best job for the community that elects him. I am passionate about my decision to run for Highway Superintendent and will take the responsibilities of such a position very seriously. I ask for your vote on November 3rd. JIM BARSALOUX for TOWN COUNCIL Thank you for the ideas and comments given to us when we stop at your door! We are already starting to build great relationships within the community, and I look forward to hearing more thoughts and ideas from people that care as much about LeRoy as I do when I am on the town board. I am a Graduate of RIT with a degree in Electrical Engineering. I have worked in the engineering field for over 10 years interfacing daily with diverse teams. I have managed projects on small budgets while still holding a high level of quality. I own JimmyB Entertainment, a small business based in LeRoy, and owe much of my success to the people of LeRoy. Bring a friend when you vote on November 3rd and Please consider me for your vote! LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 25, 2015 Le Roy Youth Football Seniors LeRoy 30 - Warsaw 0 The Le Roy Senior Knights put together a dominating offensive and defensive performance against the Warsaw Tigers. The Knights started out on defense and after driving the Tigers backwards on 3 straight plays, Tyler Strollo sacked the Warsaw quarterback in the endzone to register the Knights first safety of the year. On the ensuing kickoff Warsaw kicked the ball to Le Roy’s Brady Fix who would run 45 yards for the touchdown behind a great downfield block by Brett Babcock. Adam Risewick added the 2 point conversion to put the Knights up 10-0. Le Roy stopped Warsaw on their next offensive position to take over on the Warsaw 15 yard line. Two plays later Adam Risewick rushed for a 15 yard TD. Brady Fix added the 2 point conversion. Warsaw would again go on offense and the Knights defense would again hold them. This time Warsaw would punt on 4th down. The punt would go to Le Roy’s speedster Adam Risewick. Risewick caught the punt and returned it untouched for the 25 yard touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and the Knights were now up 24-0. On Le Roy’s next offensive possession, John Panepento kept the ball on a 25 yard QB keeper around the left end for a touchdown. The Knights were now up 30-0 before the end of the first half. The game would end with the score 30-0 in favor of Le Roy. Carrying the ball for Le Roy was Adam Risewick, Brady Fix, Zach Vanderhoof, John Panepento, Corey Wallace, Riley Williams, Ryan Higgins, Bryson Gentile, Ethan Howe, Kaden Burger, and Connor Murrell. The Knights beat Warsaw in rain, hail, and snow by a score of 32-0, their 4th straight shutout and 5th of the season. Warsaw began the game with the ball, but was forced to punt after a sack by Tony Piazza and tackles for loss by Xavier King and Aiden Davis. The Knights offense took over at midfield. Facing 10 men in the box, the Knights offense showed their diversity by opening up the passing playbook. Quarterback Tommy Condidorio threaded the needle, hitting Adrian Stephens for a 20 yard gain. On the very next play, Condidorio fired a bullet to Drew Strollo, who scooted into the end zone for a 10 yard TD. Tony Piazza punched it in for the conversion, giving the Knights an early 8-0 lead. The Knights defense forced a quick turnover on downs. It took no time for the offense to strike again, as 3 plays later Piazza would break loose for an exciting 19 yard touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0. Warsaw’s offense took the field again, this time looking to throw the ball as well. However Jackson Fix jumped the Warsaw receiver’s route, making the interception and darting 30 yards for the defensive touchdown. The “Fix Six” extended the Knights lead to 20-0, before even one snap of the second quarter. LeRoy forced another punt, giving the offense another opportunity. LeRoy methodically moved the ball down the field behind strong blocking from Cam Maxwell, DJ O’Geen, Jayce Panepento, Holden Sullivan, Danny Howe, Tristan Weiseltier, and Joey Biletskiy. Aaric Luce eventually broke through the defense, stiff arming his way to a 10 yard TD, capping off the 1st half scoring at 26-0. LeRoy began the 2nd half with the ball, however after some miscues had to punt. Their defense was again stout, forcing another Warsaw punt after a Drew Strollo sack. This time the Knights fired on all cylinders. A 25 yard run by Strollo, 22 yard run by Tommy Condidorio, and a 35 yard run by Jackson Fix put the ball on the 1 yard line. Luke Lathan completed the drive with a 1 yard touchdown plunge, giving the Knights a 32-0 lead. That would be the final score of the game, as both defenses played well for the 4th quarter. Tony Piazza led the rushing attack for the Knights with 47 yards, including a TD and 2-point conversion. Drew Strollo added 33 yards on the ground as well as a 10 yard TD catch. Jackson Fix added 35 yards rushing. Tommy Condidorio was effective throwing the ball for 30 yards, and also performed as a dual threat, running for 23 yards. Adrian Stephens had 13 yards rushing as well as 20 yards receiving. Aaric Luce rumbled for 34 yards including a TD, and Luke Lathan added a TD as well. Also carrying the football for LeRoy were Jake Higgins, Adam Woodworth, Connor Hegeman, Jack Egeling, and Alex Spezzano. Spezzano took a particularly painful hit, however personified his Knights team’s attitude and toughness commenting afterwards, “pain is just weakness leaving the body.” Defensively, the Knights were suffocating and relentless all day long. Jackson Fix and Tommy Condidorio provided excellent pass defense, with Fix returning an interception 30 yards for a TD, and both making tackles. Nose tackle Xavier King was dominant with 3 tackles for loss. Drew Strollo had 8 tackles, including several for loss and 2 sacks. Fellow linebacker Tony Piazza added 6 tackles, including a big sack as well. Linebackers Luke Lathan and Xavien Walker added 3 tackles each. Connor Hegeman (fumble recovery), Jack Egeling, and Adam Woodworth all made 2 tackles. Also making tackles were Hunter Beverly, Aidan Davis, Jake Higgins, Alex Spezzano, and DJ O’Geen. The Knights finish their regular season on Sunday October 25th with a trip to Geneseo. Over Achieving Office Wear! On Thursday, October 15th at the Byron Fire Hall, 85 plus attendees came together to celebrate Halloween at Genesee County’s Adults with Developmental Disabilities Dance. There were witches, inmates, policemen, firemen, clowns, cowboys, princesses, hippies and a host of other characters who arrived ready to party. Attendees entered ghostly bat-ridden, spider-webbed Byron Fire Hall on a mild October evening. DJ Tom queued up some of the group’s favorite tunes. As usual, folks mingled on the dance floor in between enjoying some delicious Timbits from Tim Horton’s and apple cider. October birthdays were recognized prior to our customary circle dances; the chicken dance & the hokie pokie. On a sad note, we gathered to remember three dancers who had passed on earlier this year with a moment of silence. Little cards with their photos were handed out at the end of the dance. Folks also signed a get-well card for our photographer, Uncle Joe, who is recovering from surgery. The next dance is the much anticipated Christmas Dance on Thursday, December 19th. We are expecting a visit from Santa and he usually comes bearing gifts. The dance will be held at the Byron Fire Hall. The dances are sponsored by Byron Ladies Auxiliary, and are open to all folks with developmental disabilities ages 13 and up living in Genesee County, family and caregivers are also welcome.
