Drama - Otago Girls` High School
Otago Girls’ High School NAUTILUS NEWS 24 July 2015 Otago Girls’ High School Open Night Tuesday 28 July, 7pm to 9pm 41 Tennyson Street, Dunedin (03) 474 0496 [email protected] Follow us... From the Principal Ms Linda Miller Dear Parents and Caregivers, It is great to be back at school after my term away on Sabbatical. There is nothing like being away from the usual routines to provide time to think and to clarify what is important in your work. Otago Girls’ High School has always been about providing the best quality of education to the girls of this region and this continues to be the case. At the end of their time at Otago Girls’ we want our students to be well prepared to take their place as productive citizens. In order to achieve this goal the content of the education we provide has had to change over time. These changes are a result of the transformation of society as social networks, cultural dynamics, political structures, economic practices and technological advances have occurred. It is essential that we keep pace with the changing demands that result but also that we stay true to the values and traditions that underpin our school. My column in the recently published Mid-Year Report and an article in Thursday’s Otago Daily Times outline the Global Leadership project I worked on during my sabbatical. I see this as a way of supporting the curriculum currently operating within the school and of providing students with opportunities to expand their horizons and deepen their learning. More information about the programme will come out to students and the community once some major events on our school calendar are out of the way. Next Tuesday is our annual Open Night. This is a big event in our school calendar as it is an opportunity to showcase what we offer at our school to families considering where to send their daughters for their secondary schooling. All our students will be contributing to this event; helping to set up, demonstrating in classrooms or guiding on the night. Our students are our best advertisement and I know they enjoy the opportunity to show off their school. O G H S If you are enrolling another daughter at the school office by 12 noon on the 13 August. Later in the week 38 students and two teachers from Yasuda, one of our Japanese sister schools, arrive for a two week stay. Thank you to the families who are hosting these girls. Such exchanges provide a fantastic opportunity for our students to become a little more internationalised and will also contribute evidence towards the achievement of the Global Leadership Award. Staff are also busy at present writing senior reports, which will come out prior to the Student Learning Conferences in week six, and preparing for the Education Review Office visit which occurs 17 – 21 August. Otago Girls’ has had some wonderful coverage in the media recently. To see links to these articles and information on the amazing achievements of our students please remember to check out our Facebook page. We always enjoy reading your comments and seeing how news about the achievements of the school, the students and the staff travels so quickly and so globally. Ms L. It relates to women in Otago who have played a significant part in the region’s history. All the women profiled and pictured had connections with Otago Girls’ High School as the author Millie Lovelock explains. While the article doesn’t mention Rachel Reynold’s connection with OGHS she helped Learmonth Dalrymple fight for the establishment of our school. Rachel’s daughters also attended Otago Girls’. The author of the article, Millie Lovelock, was also an Otago Girls’ High School ex-girl and it was lovely to see her writing so fondly of the school. Mrs J. Smallfield Archivist 3 Year 10 Human Rights Festival The top ten boards from each Year 10 Social Studies class was displayed in the hall and were judged by a panel. English Congratulations to Lucy Matahaere who is a finalist in the Pikihuia awards for Māori writers. There are only three finalists in her category. For twenty years the Māori Literature Trust and HUIA Publishers have been organising this unique, and increasingly popular, biennial contest producing award-winning Māori writers in all genres. Lucy stands to win a cash prize of $500 and the school would receive $250 worth of HUIA books. Two highly commended finalists will receive a cash prize of $250 each with their schools receiving $100 worth of HUIA books. Lucy is right up there and will certainly take away something. We are so excited for you, Lucy and we wish you well as you head to the award ceremony in September. If you are an enthusiastic writer like Lucy, why not have a look at the range of competitions that are still running on our Ultranet page http://oghs.ultranet.school.nz/ClassSpace/1685/ There is the Margaret Mahy Starlight Essay and Poetry Competition, starlingmag.com, the Sunday Star Times short story competition and the Re-Draft publication. All of these places are accepting work from young people like you. If you need advice or a bit of support, see your English teacher or contact Ms Dick at [email protected] Ms K. Dick Head of Department English 4 Drama The Year 11 Drama students performed their class play to the junior students at Arthur Street School at the end of last term. It was a great experience for the cast and audience alike, as some of the students were returning to their old primary school and the play was written specifically for a younger audience. The performance was worth five level one NCEA credits and all of the students attempting the standard achieved them. Ms B. My vision was to enhance students food choices through developing and running a food cooking competition and to see via a teaching lesson, whether or not this will extend on students’ knowledge on ‘Energy Dense’ foods and make them more aware of these types of foods. Overall the food competition ran successfully with Melissa Bonilla Casanas and Hannah Woodford in Year 9 winning, with their healthy mixed berry smoothie. On 1 July Highlander Joe Wheeler came in and talked to the Year 13 Food and Nutrition class. We learnt about the changes he had to make to adapt his lifestyle to playing rugby and the dietary needs required before, Hannah Power with during and after rugby games. I would just personally like to thank Joe Highlander Joe Wheeler Wheeler for coming in to talk to our class, Mr Cook for organising for him to come in, the Year 9 food class for participating and Mrs Cook for helping out along the way. Alice qualified for finals in two of her events while Kaori qualified for five finals out of six events. Erin had an outstanding meet qualifying for finals in all eight events and was placed third in the 400m freestyle open, 200m backstroke open and 400m IM open events. On behalf of the Otago Girls’ swimmers, I would like to thank Julie for the wonderful job she did supporting the girls and making sure that they were at the right place at the right time. Miss M. Young Teacher in Charge Swimming Congratulations Natasha Whyte 12Hi was awarded this certificate and a trophy at the Junior Non-Commissioned Officer Course for Cadets over the holidays. It was a course with 40 people, selected from the South Island, and it teaches leadership skills for within Cadets and in the community. Georgia Hatton (from the Air Cadets) also went on the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer Course over the holidays, the week after Natasha went. O G H S International Department The International Department is delighted to welcome new students this term, from Japan, China and Hong Kong. Our English Language Learners now come from Samoa, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Nepal, India and Syria. They add a diversity of cultures and approaches to our school community, which is good both for their learning and that of the students who have English as a first language. Both International and Kiwi students showed real leadership in extending the Kiwi Sisters group last term. This is a great way for International and Kiwi students to spend time together. The Dunedin schools have created a social committee to hold events where international and domestic students can meet and have fun together. Our school organised the first activity for this group. Friday 26 June, approximately 55 students came to our gym where they participated in games to get to know each other, dodgeball and a quiz. Having friends both within and outside of school makes it so much easier to do things together - and to keep learning socially, culturally and academically. Any OGHS student is welcome to join our Kiwi Sister programme and they can contact our co-ordinators who are Shaharn Cameron and Bow Benjakul, or the teachers Mrs Boomer and Mrs Chapman. Mrs K. Boomer and Mrs N. Chapman 9 PTSA A PTSA meeting was held on Wednesday and our principal Linda Miller spoke to us about her sabbatical and the Global Leadership programme she is establishing at Otago Girls’ which featured in yesterday’s ODT. Her plans were received with great enthusiasm from those at the meeting. At the meeting two grants were made: $100 to Jade Johnston in Year 12 who is attending a St John’s International Cadet Camp in Hong Kong and $800 was given to the A hockey team to attend the Audrey Timlin Memorial Hockey tournament in Invercargill. The PTSA have confirmed that their House and Garden Tour will be held on 18 October. If you have a house or garden in the central Dunedin area that you would be prepared to open up to the ticket holders please contact the school – we would love to hear from you. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 26 August at 7.30pm (please note the change of date) and will be a combined social event with the Board of Trustees in the school library. This is a great opportunity for any new parents to come along and join our happy team. Contact us if you would like one of our PTSA members to pick you up on the evening and bring you along Careers During the recent July school holidays a number of senior students attended STAR courses with different tertiary providers. STAR funding is used to help students transition from school to further education, training and employment by providing and purchasing tertiary-type courses. Girls attended courses in First Aid, Food Safety, Advanced Customer Service, Hairdressing, and Communication Design. Term 3 is a particularly busy time for Year 13 students as they start preparing applications for university and polytechnic courses such as Bachelor Physical Education, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, Bachelor of Teaching – Primary or Early Childhood to mention a few. Students intending to study at Otago University are encouraged to apply for Undergraduate Scholarships and the closing date is 15 August. There are many other scholarships available that students may apply for and these can be accessed from the Breakout database at school or from any public library. O G H S Girls are encouraged to take some time to research scholarship and funding applications. To date there are over 4,000 awards, scholarships and grants available to individuals throughout New Zealand. Tertiary course planning sessions for Year 13 students will take place during the term with University of Otago, Otago Polytechnic, University of Canterbury, Auckland University and Victoria University. General careers information can be accessed through Careers NZ at www.careers.govt.nz This term students will be busy with curriculum based learning, sporting and cultural activities, parallel exams and thinking about their subjects for the following year. Families, whanau and communities have a major influence on a young person’s career decisions. Conversations at home about learning and career planning will help build a shared understanding of student’s strengths, interests and aspirations. Families and whanau are always welcome to make appointments with the Careers Adviser, Mrs Wilson. Mrs V. Wilson Career Education Leader The Port Chalmers Seafood Festival is a fantastic Dunedin event that needs your help please!
