1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE DEVICE
By exfoliating the stratum corneum the CHROMA CLEAR device corrects skin problems
such as: all types of scars (acne, chicken pox, injury, operation, burns, keloids), age spots,
stretch marks and wrinkles.
The CHROMA CLEAR system combines 4 separate treatment actions:
x Exfoliation through the propulsion of glass ball peeling crystals
x Hyperaemic stimulation produced by a powerful vacuum pump,
x Tissue relaxation through micro vibrations
x Skin rejuvenation through light stimulation.
The combination of these different actions on the treatment area produces an overall
improvement in the clarity of the skin tissue, an increase in skin elasticity, hydration of the
skin tissue and an improvement in circulatory function.
The CHROMA CLEAR device is equipped with three separate Treatment Phase control
buttons that enable the operator to select the type of treatment program to be used:
The VACUUM control button will start the suction phase (vacuum-hyperaemia)
The PEELING control button will start up the second exfoliation phase with the glass ball
micro spheres
The abrasive power can be adjusted with the use of the INTENSITY control positioned to
the left of the front panel and has a maximum (+) and minimum (-) level. This allows the
operator to predetermine the speed of the crystals’ propulsion. If a stronger abrasion is
necessary work for longer on the area being treated or carry out more sessions.
It is important to remember that:
slow movements result in a stronger abrasion
whereas
fast movements result in a weaker abrasion
The CHROMA VIBRATION control button has dual functionality : it will activate the micro
vibration phase, and can be selected to work with either VACUUM, PEELING OR
CHROMO/PHOTO THERAPY to relax the skin tissue, increase the stimulation of the
cellular turnover and provides a pleasant treatment sensation .
To activate the Chromotherapy or Phototherapy applications the microdermo percussion
tip is simply replaced with the appropriate chromo therapy blue light cap or photo therapy
red light cap. NB. The CHROMATHERAPY (BLUE) and PHOTOTHERAPY (RED)
treatment applications cannot be activated without micro vibration.

N.B:
⇒ There are obstructions or impurities inside the circuit when:
♦ The pressure indicated on the vacuum gauge, with hand piece open (NOT
BLOCKED), is more than –15 cmHg.
SOLUTION:
♦ In this case (and if the glass micro spheres do not exit at all from the hand piece
while working), it is necessary to carry out the procedures described below until
the optimal values are restored and the glass micro spheres exit correctly:
Check that there are no obstructions inside the hand piece. Obstructions in the hand
piece can be easily noticed by removing the grey tube that covers the hand piece’s
transparent tubes and seeing an excessive deposit of glass micro spheres inside it.
If this is the case, detach the hand piece by removing the two tubes that flow into it and
blow into the circuit inside the hand piece with compressed air.
⇒ If a pressure lower than the optimal pressure is noted, it means that there is a leak
in the pneumatic system, in which case carry out the following procedure:
♦ Check the integrity of the tubes connected to all the coloured receptacles at the
back of the machine;
♦ Check that the bottles are completely closed;
♦ Check that all the tubes are connected completely, following the indications in
figure [B]
♦ Check that the values set are the correct ones;
IF THE VALUES ARE STILL LOW IN SPITE OF ALL THESE MEASURES, TELEPHONE
020 8731 5686 OR E-MAIL ([email protected]) WITH A DETAILED
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM.
WARNING
Before each treatment, the skin must be cleansed carefully
and be free of all creams and make-up. These products
could obstruct the hand piece if vacuumed
and cause the emission of air and powder to become
irregular.
19
If the machine will not start, check the fuses incorporated in the power socket Fig. 3 (3C)
and if necessary replace with others of equal value (1.6 A – 220 V) (3.15 A - 110V).
If this does not work, send a fax to CACI International technical assistance describing the
problem in detail. For an even more rapid communication use the email reserved for the
solution of small technical problems: [email protected]

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR OPTIMAL FUNCTIONING
• In very humid environments or when the device will not be used for 2 or 3 days, it is advisable to:
A. Empty the bottle containing the new glass micro spheres (unscrewing it from its
support and upturning the bottle) and blow into the circuit as described.
THE GLASS MICRO SPHERES MUST BE DRY!!!
B. Always make sure that the glass micro spheres are not damp (they absorb
moisture from the air!) making sure that the spare bottle is always securely
closed. If they get damp, spread them over a sheet of paper placed on something
warm and make sure there are no lumps before replacing them in the machine.
WARNING!
EVERY TIME THE BOTTLE CONTAINING THE NEW
MICROSPSHERES IS REFILLED, EMPTY THE USED
MICROSPHERES BOTTLE AND CLEAN THE WHITE
FILTER FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURE SHOWN IN THE
PICTURE 5.
If while working you realise the micro spheres are not coming
out in spite of having carefully followed the procedures
indicated above, check the glass micro- spheres.
Make sure that they are completely dry and there are no
lumps! (Possibly drying them thoroughly with a hairdryer).
1.5 CONDITIONS OF USE
1.5.1. The environmental conditions for optimal functioning are:
-
Working temperature: min. + 10°C max + 40°C;
Storing temperature: min. +5°C max +45°C;
Do not cover the
machine with cloths that obstruct
the ventilation openings.
- The environmental humidity must not exceed 50% as this could cause the micro-crystals
to form lumps. For this reason DO NOT PLACE THE MACHINE CLOSE TO SOURCES
OF HUMIDITY (vaporizers etc.).
22
1.5.2 Lighting of the work zone
It is important to ensure that the zone where the treatment will take place is adequately
illuminated, without disturbing the patient and the operator.
1.6 Cleaning and sterilization
Before starting the treatment replace the nylon hood and carefully clean the chromo
therapy cap.
WARNING!
The cleansing of any methacrylate part (transparent
parts in the bottles and in the chromo therapy cap)
must not, under any circumstances, be done using
alcohol; it would cause the CRACK and the
consequent BREAKING of these parts!!!
2.
DEVICE USAGE
2.1 Applications
CHROMA CLEAR is a method of exfoliating the skin for gentle anti-aging treatments
(wrinkles and age spots), peeling and removal of acne and chicken pox scars, and,
represents an effective and long-awaited solution to a common problem: stretch marks.
The device must only be used on these problem areas.
In particular, do not treat injuries, freckles or moles, birthmarks, mucous membranes,
intimate areas (pubic area, nipples etc.), armpits, ears, nails, teeth, eyes and the area
around the eyes.
2.2 Uses not permitted
Any kind of ordinary maintenance described in this manual must be done when the
machine is switched off with electric cable out of the socket.
Connection must only be made with an earthed electrical system.
CACI International is not responsible for damages resulting from the failure to comply with
these safety regulations.
The bottle at the rear of the device is only to be filled with glass micro spheres supplied by
CACI International .
Do not replace the fuses with others of different values.
23
Do not add parts that are not provided by the manufacturing company
and do not modify them in any way.
Do not pour water on or immerse the machine parts in liquids, apart from the hand piece,
distance pieces and spouts, which are to be immersed in sterilizing liquid after being
removed from the device. Do not vacuum very small solid materials (such as balls of
polystyrene, rice, glass beads, sand, powder, soil etc.) as they could get stuck in the
ventilation holes. Do not cover the machine or expose it to direct sunlight.
If the machine is not to be used for a while, make sure the bottles of micro-crystals have
been emptied, the filters have been cleaned and the machine has been unplugged.
If the machine must be transported, replace it in its original packing.
Do not ingest the glass micro spheres.
Do not use on animals, furniture, objects of any kind, and do not use as a vacuum cleaner.
When the face is to be treated, cover the eyes with pads (such as cotton wool pads), as the
emission of the crystals could damage the cornea.
Do not vacuum anything other than exfoliated cells
and micro-spheres.
The device must only be used by QUALIFIED
PROFESSIONALS
(in possession of a PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY
THERAPIST DIPLOMA).
Keep out of the reach of children and unqualified
persons.
Ordinary maintenance (refilling and emptying of the
bottles containing the clean/used micro spheres,
sterilizing of removable parts (hand piece, hoods,
connectors) and cleaning of the filters must only be
carried out by the user.
2.3 CONTRAINDICATIONS OF USE!
-
As inert materials such as glass micro-spheres and nylon are used, the cases of
allergies caused by the use of this device are virtually inexistent. However, it is
24
•
recommended to carry out the following tolerance test before proceeding with
treatment. On a hidden part of the body (such as behind the ear or on the arm)
perform a skin sensitivity patch test prior to all microdermabrasion procedures. If
no immediate reddening, itching, spots or rashes appear on the treated
part, proceed with the treatment.
Take special care when treating very sensitive skin that reddens easily (such as skin with
couperose, children's skin or elderly skin).
It is advised that following a microdermabrasion procedure, treated skin exposed during
the summer months should be UV protected (i.e. by the application of a sunscreen with
a 30-40 SPF) to safely protect against the possible risks of sun damage and
hyper-pigmentation/sensitivity. The treated skin should preferably be protected from strong
wind and extreme cold weather conditions also as this could cause excessively dry and/or
unevenly pigmented skins.
-
If a skin sensitivity is ascertained, proceed with the treatment adjusting both the VACUUM
and the micro sphere INTESITY output speed to low and placing the hand piece on the
part to be treated and making fast movements, frequently removing the hand piece from
the skin.
Do not operate on areas with small cuts or recent burns, rashes of any kind and freckles
or moles, the origins of which have not been confirmed.
2.4 MATERIALS AND PRODUCT BIOCOMPATIBILITY
-
The materials constituting the hood that comes into contact with the epidermis and the
micro-crystals are “biocompatible”, and non-toxic. Both substances do not present
contraindications in the contact with human skin.
2.5 SPARE PARTS
Spare parts and supplementary consumable supplies can be acquired from CACI
International at the price list current at that time.

3.SKIN PHYSIOLOGY
x
x
x
x
x
x
x
x
x
x
Before looking at the process of micro-exfoliation, a discussion regarding
some basic concepts of skin physiology can be helpful:
The human skin is more than just a living coat;
It is responsible for many vital functions.
It shields an individual from the environment and is in direct contact with it
at the same time.
The skin feels warmth and cold as well as a sense of well being and pain.
Like a chemical plant, it processes drugs and poisons and produces
enzymes and hormones.
It offers protection against bumps, pressure and friction.
Its natural acidic barrier prevents germs from penetrating.
Since our skin performs extraordinary work all day round, it deserves
special attention, particularly if some of its normal functions are disturbed.
The extension of our skin is directly proportional to age, sex, height and
physique.
The skin is the largest and heaviest part of the body (from 1.5 to 2 sqm in
extension and approx. 15Kg in weight).
3.1 THE SKIN’S LAYERS
The surface of the skin or the part visible to the naked eye, is made up of a
conglomeration of dead cells.
Below the surface, the skin’s multiple functions take place in three very thin and
distinct layers made up of different skin tissues:
1.
2.
3.
The epidermis,
The dermis, and
The hypodermis, or subcutaneous tissue.
Each layer not only has its own specific task but also works in co-ordination with
the layer next to it. The layer to which we will dedicate our main attention,
however, is the epidermis since it is the only layer on which aesthetics works upon
27
(Pict. N. 1)
28
SKIN
THICKNESS
29
3.1.1 The Epidermis
The epidermis is the outer layer of our body and is therefore in closest contact with
the environment.
This is the layer responsible for the look and health of the skin, as well as for
protecting it from moisture loss and the penetration of products and bacteria. It
gives the skin its glow, suppleness, youthfulness, texture and good attractiveness.
Ultraviolet rays, acne, visible skin diseases and skin cancer all affect this layer.
The epidermis is a relatively thin layer, varying in thickness from about 1.6mm on
the soles of the feet to about 0.04 mm on the eyelids. It meshes with the next
layer, the dermis, by its indented profile.
The epidermis is formed through a process of keratinization during which all the
different layers are formed. Till the 60th day of life, the embryo is covered by a
simple epithelium formed by only one layer of germinative cells with an intense
mitotic activity (differentiation) and by one layer of old cells (Periderm).
After the 60th day of life, the epidermis begins to have its stratified aspect and each
layer corresponds to the Keratinization process. As this process proceeds, new
layers are formed.
From the 24th week, the Corneum layer is formed and at baby’s birth the epidermis
is a keratinized functional epithelium.

The EPIDERMIDIS is an epithelial tissue coating or our organism having specific
characteristics:
1.
FLATNESS: because it is formed by cells having a plate shape (plate cell)
31
ict. N. 3)
2.
STRATIFIED: because it is composed of different cell layers which are
continuously regenerated (new cells replaced the scaled ones).
(Pict. N. 4)
3.
KERATINIZED: because its cells produce and synthesise Keratin.
The Epidermis is formed by many cells which live in symbiosis. The main cells
are:
32
KERATINOCYTES: cells which produce keratin which fill cells on the uppermost
surface forming the stratum corneum;
MELANOCYTES: cells which produce melanin which gives the colour to our skin;
CELLS OF LANGERHANS: which work as peripheral sentries of our immunity
system.
CELLS OF MERKEL which are the receptors of touch.
(Pict. N. 5)
An epithelial tissue (or EPITHELIUM) is a tissue in which the cells lie tightly one to
each other. The Epidermis is a typical epithelial tissue since the cells, in fact, lie
tightly one to each other
But these cells are always isolated from each other by a space known as the
intercellular space or Biomatrix, in which flows the interstitial lymph. This “waterbearing stratum” wets and feeds all the cells which receive from it nutrition and
oxygen and expel into it the refuse.
33
(Pict. N. 6)
34
The Epithelial cells are thus in close contact to each other (separated by this very
thin intercellular space) and are connected to each other by extensions of the
membranes. In this way, the cells form a tissue which works as a “border” between
the body and the outside environment.
The epithelii are not vascularized by the capillary vessels, but by diffusion from the
underlying connective tissue (which is much vascularized).
(Pict. N. 7)
35
The mediator between the connective tissue and the epithelium coating is the
BASAL LAMINA (or membrane). In the skin, this lamina carries out a strategic role
between the dermis and epidermis and is part of the dermis-epidermis connection
(referred to as GDE). This GDE separates the epidermis from the underlying
dermal connective tissue.
(Pict. N. 8)
The Epidermis is not just a mass of cells. Among the cells flows a liquid coming
from the vessels of the underlying dermis which wet the cells and supply them with
oxygen and aliment necessary for their metabolism. As mentioned above, in this
area our cells expel their refuse and this is something easily demonstrated.
When we graze our skin, more than often no bleeding occurs but the secretion of a
sticky fluid. This means that the abrasion of the corneum layer has removed the
“dam” which keeps in and prevents exit of the intercellular lymph which drips onto
the surface of the skin forming a secretion which dries up becoming a yellow scab.
36
The epidermis is divided into five sub-layers of cells, all metabolically very active.
From the surface of the skin down to the dermis, the five epidermis layers are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Corneum layer (also referred to as the stratum corneum),
Lucidum layer,
Granulosum layer,
Mucosum layer, and
Germinative layer.
The epidermal cells are formed in the germinative layer and move upward toward
the corneum layer. This process takes approximately from 26 to 28 days in a
person with a young and healthy skin. (12 to 14 days are required to reach the
granular layer and 13 to 14 days to reach the corneum layer). With age, the speed
of this process is much reduced. It is estimated that after the age of fifty, it takes
about 37 or more days to complete the same process.
Due to this process, cells are transformed into keratin, become bigger and flatter
and eventually die. In their upward process, epidermal cells undergo a number of
chemical modifications, transforming themselves from soft, protoplasmic cells into
flat surface “scales” that are constantly being rubbed off to make room for new
cells.
Understanding the epidermal layers allows us to comprehend the problems of
dehydration, sensitivity, ageing and pigmentation.
The cells of the four epidermal layers from the germinative to the lucidum layer
are referred to as keratinocytes and are the predominant cell species found in the
epidermis. It is believed that the primary function of the keratinocytes is
manufacturing the uppermost layer – the corneum layer. An improperly
functioning keratinocyte formation system cannot generate a cosmetically
acceptable corneum layer.
As the cells move upward from the germinative layer, they begin to fill with a
granular substance called keratin (hence the term keratinocyte), lose water and
flatten.
In their last stage of migration, the cells reach and form the corneum layer.
37
The corneum layer, or cornification of the keratinoctyes, is what we see as our
skin. It is made up of eighteen to twenty-three layers of flattened, dry cells
(corneocytes), firmly cemented together by a material (composed of lipids,
ceramides, glycoproteins, dermasomes, peptide breakdown products, sebaceous
products and active enzymes) usually referred to as “cellular cement.”
The corneum layer is almost fluidless, retaining only some 10-15% of its original
moisture. Its principle activities are to prevent excessive dehydration of the skin
tissues and prevent foreign matter from penetrating the skin.
The proper balance of all the epidermal elements is essential for the appropriate
functioning of keratinocytes and the corneum layer. Without such a balance, the
beauty of the skin is impaired.
3.1.2 The Hydrolipid film
The skin has to be soft, smooth and supple. This is achieved by a thin film of
hydrolipid on the corneum layer of the epidermis. It comes up to the surface
beside the hairs and fills the space between the cells.
It consists mainly of an emulsion of water in oil and sebum, which is excreted by
the sebaceous gland present in the dermal layer.
The hydrolipid film also contains moisture components which are excreted with
sweat. The hydrolipid film performs the following tasks:
a.
b.
c.
It keeps the skin supple,
It prevents high water loss in the stratum corneum, and
It forms the natural acidic coating (pH 5.5) of the skin surface, which in turn
prevents the penetration of harmful substances that could cause
inflammation, infections or allergic reactions.
Any disorder of the hydrolipid film causes problems ranging from skin irritation to
skin diseases. Even cleansing the skin disturbs the balance of the hydrolipid film.
In healthy skin this is not alarming because the sebaceous glands begin to work
instantly.
38
3.1.3 The Dermis
The second layer of skin, much thicker than the epidermis (from 2 to 4 mm), is the
dermis (or “true skin”). This layer serves two principle functions:
1. It provides nutrition for the epidermis by means of a vast network of
capillaries and blood vessels, and
2. It forms a supporting framework that is composed of collagen and elastic
protein fibers immersed in a colloidal matrix.
The dermis is responsible for the skin’s elasticity. Collagen and elastic protein
fibers stabilize the skin and prevent it from being torn. This elasticity depends
greatly on a well-balanced water content in the dermis and other skin layers. The
high content of chondoitin and hyaluronic acid provides a liquid depot which
nourishes the epidermal cells.
This layer is highly elastic and has fat cells as well as nutrients, blood vessels,
sweat glands and sebaceous glands. About two million sweat gland channels rise
up to the epidermal layer to maintain the water/salt equilibrium and also to regulate
the temperature of the skin.
The structure of the nerves and sensory cells are also located in this layer. All
sensations (pain, itching, temperature, etc.) are transferred from the receptors by
way of nerves to the brain as electric impulses.
3.1.4 The Hypodermis
The hypodermis (or subcutaneous tissue) is the skin’s bottom layer and it
connects the skin with the muscle tissues.
The hypodermis is distributed differently in the human skin, depending on age,
race, sex, type of food nutrition, endocrine and body region where it’s located.
The hypodermis may be regarded as the extension of the strong fibrous and
elastic bundles forming the dermis.
39
The erector pili muscles for the hairs are located in this layer, which also act as
“shock absorbers”, thus supporting delicate structures such as blood vessels and
nerve endings.
40
4.Other Methods of Skin Peeling
Medical Dermabrasion
For many years, the technique of choice for smoothing or refinishing the skin to
remove imperfections was medical dermabrasion. Under anesthesia, the patient’s
skin is literally frozen to death with liquid nitrogen. The dead skin is then removed
with a rotating wire brush attached to the equivalent of a dental hand-piece.
Antibiotic creams and ointments are applied. The patient is wrapped mummy-style
over the treated area, which initially has the appearance of raw meat. After
several weeks of re-wraps and reapplication of creams and ointments, the body
replaces the skin that has been removed with new skin that is smooth. The new
skin however, is essentially scar tissue and will not have the same look, feel,
elasticity, or durability as healthy epidermal tissue.
Laser Peels
Today pulsed laser treatments are very popular. Under anesthesia, a surgical
laser, typically a carbon dioxide laser, or Erbium Yag is passed sequentially in
overlapping patterns over the face or area to be treated. The laser is "pulsed".
That is, the energy is delivered in repetitive short bursts so that the surgeon has
more control and doesn't ablate (i.e. vaporize) too deeply at one time.
A CO2 laser delivers coherent light energy at a frequency that does not permit the
light to pass through water. When a CO2 light energy beam (which is invisible)
strikes water it instantly boils the water to a vapor. Normal healthy tissue is about
80% water so when a CO2 laser is aimed at tissue, the water in the tissue is boiled
and the tissue is vaporized. This phenomenon is accomplished by the transfer of
energy in the form of heat.
In the process of boiling the water in the tissue, the laser creates a second-degree
burn to the skin. Healing will occur, but the tissue that replaces the skin that was
vaporized is essentially scar tissue. It will not look, feel, and be as durable or as
elastic and healthy looking as normal, healthy, epidermal tissue.
41
Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels with various active ingredients including “fruit acids” (glycolic and
lactic) Trichloroacetic acid (TCA), Phenol and other chemicals are widely used for
treating the outer layers of the skin.
They work by using an active acid to burn or dissolve skin cells in the stratum
corneum. Chemical peels can be effective to varying degrees, but share certain
drawbacks, such as prolonged erythema, post treatment discomfort and
complications such as pigmentary skin changes.
The degree of skin reaction and side effects with chemical peels is very much
dependant on the type and percentage of the active acid used. With some of the
more aggressive TCA and phenol based peels, the skin can be left looking red,
burned and irritated for several days.
Traditional Microdermabrasion
Traditional Microdermabrasion systems work by utilizing a vacuum pump hand
piece to draw chemically inert corundum crystals (usually aluminium oxide Al2O3)
across the skin surface. The irregular shape of the crystals has an abrasive action
on the skin, so removing skin cells as the rough edges of the crystals pass over
the skin surface.
The degree of exfoliation is controlled by the size of the crystals used, the strength
of the vacuum and the speed at which the vacuum hand piece is passed across
the skin surface.
Some microdermabrasion systems also utilize a compressor to propel the crystals
with greater force across the skin surface. Microdermabrasion is successfully used
for exfoliating the skin but the abrasive nature of the crystals can in some
instances cause adverse skin reactions. Traditional microdermabrasion systems
also have a tendency to suffer from blockage malfunctions. Such blockages are
typically due to the crystals irregular shape and their propensity to be affected by
humidity.
42
5. AN OVERVIEW ON CHROMA CLEAR SYSTEM
The Chroma Clear represents a significant advancement over traditional peeling
methods.
The Chroma Clear combines five main functions:
1. VACUUM MASSAGE (aspiration only)
2. MICRODERMO PERCUSSION (aspiration and peeling simultaneously)
3. MICRO-VIBRATION (vibration mode)
4. CHROMOTHERAPY (blue light)
5. PHOTOTHERAPY (red light)
Microdermo Percussion (MDP) is a technique developed by French inventor
Paul Giordana (Patent No. F-1.136.127).
Microdermo Percussion occurs through the propelling of chemically inert and
perfectly round shaped glass micro spheres (SiO2) onto the skin.
The Microdermo percussion method stimulates the skin tissue through a gentle
tapping action achieving a gentle exfoliation and when combined with the negative
pressure of the vacuum delivers a three dimensional mechanical massage of the
base foundations of the connective tissue.
Connective tissue stimulation and manipulation revitalizes the cells responsible for
producing fibrin, elastin, collagen and glycosaminoglycans.
The MDP method is completely painless, producing very little redness or irritation
which is often more commonly associated with harsher chemical peels and
traditional methods of skin peeling.
Immediately after an MDP treatment, the client can continue a normal life-style
with no down time recovery period required.
43
The MDP treatment will tone, strengthen and rejuvenate the skin on the face or
body. The intensity of the treatment can be easily controlled by the operator,
dependent on the pressure used, the quantity of glass micro spheres propelled
onto the skin and the proportional speed with which the hand piece is moved over
the treated area.
5.1
THE MICRO-EXFOLIATION PROCESS USING THE CHROMA CLEAR
The Chroma Clear System is a process requiring repeated treatments. Microexfoliation is a two-stage process:
1.
2.
Aspiration (or vacuuming), and
Exfoliation (propelling crystals onto the skin).
Between each treatment the body replaces the skin that has been removed with
new healthy skin. The aspiration phase of the technique brings blood to the
surface and with the blood, new nourishment and energy for the epidermal tissue
cells. The exfoliation phase of the technique causes the immune system to "kickin” with a repair response that is accelerated to bring new tissue growth to the
treated area. New tissue growth will be healthy epidermal tissue and not scar
tissue. Rejuvenated skin from the Microdermo Percussion process will be more
durable. Epidermal skin will age in a normal fashion.
Stage one: Aspiration or vacuuming.
Aspiration, or vacuuming, is the first stage of treatment.
This is the standard protocol all treatments begin with.
Aspiration is designed to increase circulation and bring new life and energy to the
area being treated. This process is intended to draw the blood to the surface of the
skin without breaking the capillaries.
The aspiration process produces a gradual reddening of the skin from blood that is
drawn closer to the surface.
44
The Epidermis does not have any capillary vessels and so is fed with the oxygen
from the capillary vessels present in the underlying layer, the dermis. The oxygen
reaches the Epidermis through diffusion and not by direct contact with the blood
present in the capillary vessels.
Accordingly, to supply nourishment to the epidermal tissue, we have to stimulate
and vascularize the epidermal tissue. Vacuum stimulation has the important
function of vascularizing the tissue, so feeding the first epidermal skin layer. A
good vacuuming will last at least 10 minutes and cause a slight reddening of the
skin. This reddening indicates that the blood has been called to the surface thus
supplying oxygenation, vitality, power and energy to the epidermal cells.

46
Stage two: Microdermo Percussion (MDP)
The skin works through a continuous process of cornification of the keratinocytes
also referred to as “keratinization”.
During this process new keratin is continuously produced by the keratinocytes and
this fills the most superficial cells thus forming the stratum corneum. This process
is continuous in our body and it takes approximately from 26 to 28 days to be
completed in a person with a young and healthy skin (12 to 14 days is required to
reach the granulosum layer and 13 to 14 days to reach the corneum layer). With
age, the speed of this process is greatly reduced. It is estimated that after the age
of fifty, it takes about 37 or more days to complete the same process.
If nothing should hinder this process, the regenerated tissue will be perfect and
without any kind of anesthetic marks.
The main aim of Microdermo percussion is to help speed up the turnover of the
skin cells reversing the effects of time and earlier damages, smoothing out skin
texture and evening out blotchy coloration. The method can also stimulate the
formation of our own natural collagen, a protein layer beneath the skin that helps
to provide structure and firmness to the skin’s surface.
The reaction of our body, following this process, will be the regeneration of new
tissue which will replace the micro-exfoliated (removed) one. The new tissue will,
naturally, be new, fresh, healthy and elastic. Carrying out weekly treatments, will
stimulate the continuous regeneration of new tissue thus erasing the problem
completely and replacing same with a new skin. It is to be noted that the treatment
is progressive, not aggressive, non invasive and natural.
47
The Microdermo Percussion (MDP) method, propels solid calibrated spheres, in
a non abrasive, non irritating way onto the skin, in order to prepare the tissue and
make it more receptive.
The epidermis is stimulated by the operator with a gentle continuous mechanical
micropulsation.
The process uses a constant flux of air and glass micro spheres (SiO2), in order to
stimulate and activate the natural functions of the epidermis.
The propulsion of perfectly round glass spheres, delivers a tapping (percussion)
action on the epidermis. The combination of this action with the previous vacuum,
function produces a diffusion of the hyperaemia so improving of the cellular
activity.
The glass micro spheres and any corneum cells that have been exfoliated are
absorbed by the vacuum in the hand piece . The Chroma Clear uses a patented
“closed loop” system in the hand piece. “Closed loop” means that when you take
the hand-piece off a 90-degree angle from the skin, the machine stops spraying
crystals.
This combined projection-suction action creates a vigorous micro-massage the
beneficial effects of which reach deep into the dermis skin layer, stimulating all the
cell components right through the epidermis.
When the epidermis is stimulated with this controlled tapping, the glass micro
spheres provide an adjustable three-dimensional, stimulation of the face or body.
This mechanical massage stimulates the base foundations of the connective
tissue enhancing the formation of collagen and the protein transfer from one cell to
another.
A main advantage of using the glass micro spheres compared to the crystals used
in traditional microdermabrasion is that their perfect spherical shape does not
abrade the skin, but instead promotes skin regeneration through a mechanical and
non irritating action.
48
The glass micro spheres have a size of around 100 microns compared to the
irregular shaped corundum crystals that are used in traditional microdermabrasion
which are usually circa 200 microns in size.
Not only does the MDP method provide a more pleasant treatment for the client
but the spherical shape and smaller size of the crystals also greatly reduces the
potential for machine blockage problems commonly associated with traditional
microdermabrasion systems.

6. Microdermo Percussion (MDP) Applications
Microdermo Percussion is effective and recommended for the following
applications:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
As an "anti-aging" therapy.
The softening of lines and wrinkles.
The reduction and softening of scar tissue.
The minimization of hyper-pigmentation (i.e. age spots.).
The smoothing and lessening of acne scars, including "ice pick"
type scars.
The removal and/or lessening of stretch marks.
The repair of sun-damaged skin.
Hard skin and calluses
6.
7.
8.
Immediately after the treatment, the skin will be clean, clear, smooth, and healthy.
This is accomplished by bringing the blood supply to the surface through
aspiration. The blood supply feeds the tissue and stimulates the immune system
to promote re-growth of new cells to replace those abraded by the corundum
crystals.
Microdermo Percussion treatments are effective both before and after laser
treatment and/or a standard surgical face-lift. If treatment is applied before
surgery, it will give the surgeon, smoother, cleaner and healthier skin to work with
and thus enhance the results of surgery. If treatment is applied after surgery, it will
maintain the results already achieved and smooth out the skin where lines may
still be apparent.
.
NOTICE
The sun’s rays will have an adverse effect on anyone who is
undergoing treatment regardless of the original pigmentation of their
skin prior to treatment.
Clients MUST BE PROTECTED from the rays of the sun for A
MINIMUM OF five (5) days following treatment. This protection
is best accomplished by the application of a sunscreen with a
very high sun protection factor (i.e. 30-40 SPF).
51
7. CONTRA-INDICATIONS (Where Microdermo Percussion is Not suitable)
Microdermo Percussion (MDP) treatments are NOT suitable for any abnormal
condition that is naturally, genetically, or biologically endemic to the patient.
MDP will NOT be effective on warts, moles, birthmarks, or lesions caused by a
dietary or hormonal imbalance.
MDP should NOT be used on wounds, mucous membranes, pubic areas, nipples,
armpits, ears, nails, teeth, and the delicate tissue below the eyebrow and
surrounding the eye.
All questionable lesions or items of unknown origin should be referred to a
physician for diagnosis.
Patients with active herpes simplex are also contraindicated for treatment until the
virus becomes "non-active".
8. MICROVIBRATION
By utilizing the patented Chroma Clear probe, micro-vibration can be selected and
used during Aspiration, MDP Peeling, Phototherapy and Chromotherapy phases.
If used during the MDP Peeling phase it helps the proliferation of basal cells via
improvement of arterial-venous micro-circulation.
If used in combination with the Chromotherapy, thanks to micro-impulses, it
stimulates the basal germinative layer and accelerates cellular renewal.
Moreover Microvibration also enables cosmetic products to penetrate to the
deepest layers of the epidermis.
The combination of Microvibration and light energy Chromotherapy encourages
tissue re-epithelization and regenerates the connective tissue. In addition, when
combined with blue light this method soothes and calms the skin and so is ideally
applied post MDP Peeling
52
9. CHROMOTHERAPY
What is chromotherapy?
Chromotherapy is a therapy which uses colour and light to help body and mind to
find their natural balance. Colour and light has been used to facilitate healing since
the beginning of recorded time. 6000 years ago Chromotherapy was considered
as the “medicine of the gods” and legends say that in the mythical gardens of
Babylon people cured themselves thanks to the thousands of colours and
perfumes of innumerable plants and flowers.
The ancient Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and other major cultures made significant
medical use of light and colour. They instinctively recognized the Sun as the
primary source of longevity, health and healing.
The first Greek philosopher Pythagoras used colour for healing five hundred years
before the birth of Christ. Others classical philosophers such as Hippocrates,
Plato, Aristotle and Pliny, all tried to explain the mysteries that colour contain. In
astrology, specific colours have traditionally been associated with the different
planets.
Einstein’s theories inspired 20th century science and the application of colour and
light took a quantum leap forward.
At the most fundamental level, it is now accepted that every living creation, is
dependent on light. What we are witnessing is the marriage of ancient wisdom
with modern technology.
Today, recent scientific discoveries confirm the validity of using colour and light for
healing and harmonizing the balance of body and mind.
53
What is colour?
The universe is a magnetic field of positive and negative charges, constantly
vibrating and producing electromagnetic waves. Each of these has a different
wavelength and speed of vibration; together they form the electromagnetic
spectrum.
We can see about 40 % of the colours in the elctromagnetic spectrum. These
range from red at one end of the visible spectrum to violet at the other end. The
visible colours of white light can be broken down into individual colour wavebands
using a prism
The effect of light and colour does not end when we close our eyes. Light is
required for our cells to function normally and individual colours affect them by
causing changes in growth and behaviour. Light and colour therefore affect our
system at cellular level and the colour vibration patterns gives us life. At death
these patterns are broken down and the body begins to decay.
54
How do we sense colours?
Our eyes are our main light sensory organs. It is primarily through our eyes that
natural sunlight enters the body. However, light also enters our body through our
skin. We have all experienced the warming and sometimes burning rays of light
when we have been out in the sun for too long.
Even when we are clothed we still have a natural sensitivity to colour wavelengths.
We know that dark clothing absorbs light and lighter colours will act to reflect it.
However, we often favour wearing particularly colours not only because of the
physical perception of wearing that colour but also the way specific colours can
alter and affect our moods
Accordingly, the energy of some colours may agitate and be uncomfortable to
wear while others make us feel warm, relaxed and confident.
It is not only the texture of the fabric but also the different energy contained in the
colours that affect us.
How does light affect our body?
Light affects the pituitary gland also known as the ”master gland” of the endocrine
system since it produces substances that regulate the hormones produced by the
endocrine glands.
These glands control many of our body functions including our patterns of growth
and sleep, our temperature control, our sexual drive and energy levels, our
metabolic rate and appetite.
The pineal gland located deep within the brain is also light sensitive.
The pineal gland acts as an internal body clock, producing a substance called
Melatonin. Melatonin regulates our daily sleep cycles and also inhibits the aging of
the cells and sexual maturation. At night when there is a lack of natural sunlight,
melatonin production is increased which aids sleep, conversely, during daylight
melatonin production is suppressed.
55
The amount and intensity of light reaching the pineal gland alters with seasonal
daylight hours. Seasonal changes in the intensity of sunlight causes our body
functions, like those of animals and plants, to mimic the energy of the season. So
during the summer we feel full of vibrant energy, while during the winter months
we become sluggish and less active in order to conserve energy.
Chromotherapy and Phototherapy Studies
Today, the therapeutic application of light and colour known as Chromotherapy is
being investigated in major hospitals and research centres around the world. The
application of light energy as a treatment therapy has also been termed
“Phototherapy” derived from the measurement of light energy in units of photons.
A recent scientific study disclosed that each cell in the body emits light. Light
energy is in every nerve, cell, gland and muscle of the body and each emits its
own unique level of vibration.
When our body becomes out of balance, diseases occur. Each colour has it own
frequency, vibration which has an effect upon each of us. Chromotherapy uses
this approach to restore cells to an even level of balance and to stimulate the
healing processes.
The FDA has recently approved the application of red and blue light therapy for
the treatment of acne.
The American Academy of Dermatology has reported that blue light can be
successfully used to destroy the bacteria that produces the inflammation
associated with propionobacterium acnes.
The British Journal of Dermatology recently reported that the combination of red
and blue light could successfully treat acne.
A recent study at Hammersmith Hospital indicated that the combination of red and
blue light phototherapy for the treatment of acne produced quicker results than the
application of blue light alone.
56
Researchers at Cornell University have also discovered that applying blue light
resets the body’s internal clock, concluding that this could be useful for the
treatment of jet lag and the sleep disturbances that often accompany shift work.
NASA have recently conducted studies on the use of red LED light for the
enhancement of cell growth and found that the application of Red LED light
increased fibroblast activity and enhanced DNA synthesis.
NASA’s studies were followed by research at Medical College of Wisconsin where
it was demonstrated that Red LED light significantly enhanced and accelerated
wound healing.
The blue and red light emitting caps in the Chroma Clear are based on the
beneficial and natural effects of blue and red light that act on the basal germinative
layer, enabling the penetration of substances and improving arterial-venous microcirculation.
The therapeutic qualities of colours are also successfully employed by “traditional”
medicine. For example, treatment with blue light has replaced blood transfusions
in the care of the newborn suffering from jaundice. Blue light in fact penetrates the
skin and destroys the excess bilirubine, which the liver, not jet mature is unable to
digest. After two or three days of this treatment babies have the ability to eliminate
bilirubine by themselves.
57
BLUE LIGHT
The Blue light used in the Chroma Clear has a wavelength of 435 nm +/-.
For the Chinese, blue is the colour of immortality. It is also the colour of silence,
calm and tranquillity, and is linked to contemplation and spirituality.
In a blue room, it has been shown that a person’s heartbeat slows and body
temperature decreases.
In Chromatherapy, blue is used for its soothing and relaxing properties for the
treatment of insomnia, hypertension, nervousness and palpitations.
Treatments with continuous pulsating blue light are a valid aid in healing some
afflictions of the circulatory system and are particularly effective in eliminating
varicose veins in the legs.
Blue is an extremely powerful anti-septic, its anti bacterial properties can help to
heal throat problems, laryngitis, tonsillitis and gout.
Moreover, it cools down inflammations (rheumatic ones as well), speeding up the
healing processes and accelerating the repair response.
RED LIGHT
The Red light used in the Chroma Clear has a wavelength of 635 nm +/-.
Red has the longest wavelength of all visible light and can penetrate to a tissue
depth of about 8-10mm.
Red light has the ability to increase the circulation and activate the adrenal glands.
Red Light produces an anti-inflammatory action and is particularly beneficial in
treating wounds, wrinkles and scar tissue.
Red light has been shown to stimulate collagen protein and increase DNA and
RNA synthesis essential for the repair of damaged tissue.
58
The Chromotherapy / Phototherapy function in the Chroma Clear
The blue and red light Chromotherapy function is performed by replacing the tip
used for MDP peeling and vacuum suction with the chroma caps that emit red and
blue light.
The use of the domed tipped Chroma caps provides the ability to touch the skin
without irritating it and when combined with the microvibration function delivers a
soothing massage. Moreover, when used in combination with the microvibration it
enables skin care products to penetrate deeply into the epidermis.
The effect of the blue light after MDP peeling has a soothing and calming affect on
the skin. When combined with the hydro smoothing gel mask it acts to intensively
hydrate the skin.
The stimulatory effect of the red light directly on the skin is particular beneficial for
the treatment of wrinkles and scar tissue.
10. HYDRO SMOOTHING GEL MASK
Ingredients: Pure water, hyaluronic acid, collagen
The Hydro Smoothing Gel Mask uses patented transparent colloid technology to
deliver active hydrating nutrients to the skin tissue.
The unique material of the gel mask delivers true skin hydration from both the
outside in and from the inside out. In other words, moisture is both drawn down
from the hydrating properties of the mask (pure water, hyaluronic acid and
collagen) and pulled up through the dermis into the epidermis.
The patented gel mask material forms a tight contact with the skin so separating
the air from the skin. The occlusive properties of the mask retard evaporation of
water from the skin (skin plaster effect) while at the same time drawing moisture
down into the skin.
59
The Hydo Smoothing Gel Mask has been specifically formulated with
humectant compounds that attract water from the dermis and harbour them
into the epidermal layer.
The combination of the gel mask’s humectant and occlusive properties
provide a complimentary action in achieving and maintaining optimal skin
hydration.
11. Overview of Treatment Functions
By exfoliating the stratum corneum the CHROMA CLEAR device corrects skin problems
such as: all types of scars (acne, chicken pox, injury, operation, burns, keloids), age spots,
stretch marks and wrinkles.
The CHROMA CLEAR system combines 5 separate treatment actions:
x Exfoliation through the propulsion of glass micro spheres
x Hyperaemic stimulation produced by a powerful vacuum pump,
x Tissue relaxation through micro vibrations
x Skin rejuvenation through light stimulation.
x Tissue hydration through the application of hydro smoothing gel mask
The combination of these different actions on the treatment area produces an overall
improvement in the clarity of the skin tissue, an increase in skin elasticity, hydration of the
skin tissue and an improvement in circulatory function.
The CHROMA CLEAR device is equipped with three separate Treatment Phase control
buttons that enable the operator to select the type of treatment program to be used:
The VACUUM control button will start the suction phase (vacuum-hyperaemia)
The PEELING control button will start up the second exfoliation phase with the glass
micro spheres
The abrasive power can be adjusted with the use of the INTENSITY control positioned to
the left of the front panel and has a maximum (+) and minimum (-) level. This allows the
operator to predetermine the speed of the crystals’ propulsion. If a stronger abrasion is
necessary work for longer on the area being treated or carry out more sessions.
It is important to remember that:
slow movements result in a stronger abrasion
whereas
fast movements result in a weaker abrasion
60
The CHROMA VIBRATION control button has dual functionality: it will activate the micro
vibration phase, and can be selected to work with either VACUUM, PEELING OR
CHROMO/PHOTO THERAPY to relax the skin tissue, increase the stimulation of the
cellular turnover and provide a pleasant treatment sensation.
To activate the Chromotherapy or Phototherapy applications the microdermo percussion tip
is simply replaced with the appropriate chromo therapy blue light cap or photo therapy red
light cap.
