The Club has grown into a respected, active and acknowledged Corvette Club that meets in Ponce Inlet Florida. In January of 2005, local Ponce Inlet residents Gary and Dianne Swanhart purchased a new C6 red coupe from local Chevrolet Dealer Jon Hall. The twist in the story took place shortly after they got the car home. Jon Hall was contacted by representatives of Wrangler Jeans and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to see if the Dealership could provide them with a red Corvette to film a Wrangler Jeans commercial at the Daytona International Speedway. At the time they did not have another red C6 in stock but they remembered just having delivered a red C6 coupe to Gary and Dianne. The Swanharts were contacted and asked if they would be willing to support the filming with their new Corvette. They agreed and Gary and Dianne took the new C6 to the track and met Dale Jr. During the filming they both got to meet him and had Dale Jr. sign the dash of their new Corvette. Shortly after that event the Club was organized and Jon Hall Chevrolet became the Club’s first Sponsor. The initial meeting was held on February 22, 2005. Sixteen prospective members from Ponce Inlet, Daytona Beach Shores, Ormond Beach and Port Orange were in attendance. A general design for a “Club Logo” that depicted the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse with a C5 emblem across the background of the lighthouse was adopted. Since that initial meeting, the Ponce Inlet Corvette Club has become well known for attending local car shows, cruise-ins and is a Charitable and Social Club. Members are owners of Corvettes from 1959 to 2016. Proceeds from our annual VETTES AT THE LIGHT show and fund raisers are donated to charity. Our annual car show has become a focal point of Corvette Clubs and Corvette enthusiasts throughout the state of Florida. Chuck Fast…………..NCM Ambassador [email protected] From the Editor If Top Gun was any indication of a Corvette club having fun then I believe we have a winner with PICC. A few service problems did dampen the day for several members but overall the social committee did it yet again. The next few months have a number of events in store and especially the upcoming one at The Mellow Mushroom. This is a TOP SECRET EVENT and will be kept under wraps until the day of the event, July 16th Our President says this is a MUST attend and that if they told us then they would have to kill us. 31 July brings us to the Corvette Bear Hunt to Weir Lake. See the article and sign up early to ensure your Hunting permit. If you have an interesting article, a service or talent or just want to be a monthly contributor, please email your submission to me, also looking for fun easy healthy recipes to share either for food or drinks, please email your information to me to be included in Member Services. FOOD DRIVE 2016 ONE LINERS If I had a dollar for every girl that found me unattractive, they'd eventually find me attractive. - Today a man knocked on my door and asked for a small donation towards the local swimming pool, so I gave him a glass of water. - If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame. - My wife and I were happy for twenty years; then we met. - I bought a vacuum cleaner six months ago and so far all it's been doing is gathering dust. - If you keep your feet firmly on the ground, you'll have trouble putting on your pants. - My wife got 8 out 10 on her driver's test- - the other two guys managed to jump out of her way. - Is it wrong that only one company makes the game Monopoly? - I was going to give him a nasty look, but he already had one. - Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. - The grass may be greener on the other side but at least you don't have to mow it. - I was going to wear my camouflage shirt today, but I couldn't find it. - If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you. Regardless of what your opinion on the case may be, I shouldn't have to explain the significance of protecting your personal data -- and it all starts with your smartphone. These devices hold your personal photos, private messages, emails and sometimes even sensitive health information. It would be devastating for this data to fall into the wrong hands. While using a security code is a step in the right direction, you should really consider encrypting your device. iOS Apple introduced device encryption with iOS 8 back in 2014. All it takes is a security code or fingerprint to enable it. While a basic four-digit passcode will do, for better protection I recommend using a longer numerical passcode or a password. Head to Settings Select Touch ID & Passcode (or Passcode for older devices without a fingerprint sensor) Click on the Turn Passcode On option Enter a strong passcode or password Android It's a little more complicated for Android devices. Google's Nexus phones and tablets come with encryption enabled by default. A majority of new devices that ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, such as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, are also encrypted. Similar to the iPhone, all you have to do is add a security code or fingerprint to enable it. Head to Settings Click Security Select Screen Lock Create a security code For older devices, however, such as the Moto X Pure and Galaxy S6, you will need to manually encrypt them. Before we start, make sure the phone is plugged in, since it could take up to an hour to complete, depending on the amount of data on your device. Next create a passcode using the method outline above and the follow the steps below: Head to Settings Select Security Click on Encrypt phone The method is slightly different on the Galaxy S6. It involves going to Settings, selecting Lock Screen and Security, followed by Other Security Settings, and clicking on Encrypt phone. You also can encrypt your SD card to keep data safe and prevent the card from being used in another device (unless wiped first). Head to Settings, select Security, followed by Encrypt external SD card and click Enable. Unlike device encryption, which required you wipe the phone to remove it, SD card encryption can easily be reversed in the Settings menu. The method is slightly different for each device. Motorola, for example, lets you continue to use a pin and pattern after the phone has been encrypted, but Samsung only lets you use a password or fingerprint. Samsung also requires you enter the password after each reboot. While this makes it less likely for thieves to access your data, it may be too much of an inconvenience for some people. Your device will also take a slight performance hit when you encrypt it. It's barely noticeable on recent high-end phones, but older models and low-end devices could suffer. I recommend only encrypting recent high-end devices, such as the Galaxy S6, LG G4, HTC One M9, and their newer models (Galaxy S7, LG G5 and so on). Tampa Bay Vettes Club tampabayvettes.com Florida Keys Corvette Club flkeyscorvetteclub.com MESSAGES from Your Board President…….Bill Nelson Great results from the food drive for Halifax Urban Ministries on June 18th, both in food items and cash donations. A good turn out for what may become an annual show at Venetian Bay, hopefully in a little cooler month. Plans are progressing for a show at Discount Tire, possibly in September, and a tour of Chris Cruz Artistry, possibly in August. McKenna's did their usual good job for our dinner stop after June's meeting, we had approximately 30 members attend. It still isn't too late to sign up for the New Orleans trip in October. If you are thinking about it there will be a planning meeting at the Dibling’s house sometime possibly within the next month. If you will email me I will add you to the list and send you an email with the date. Vice President…..Jack Dibling We had a great meeting in June with really good attendance. Thirty plus members went to McKenna's after the meeting for dinner. As always, they did a super job for our club. We also attended the Venetian Bay Car Show at the Town Center. We are looking forward to more good events this summer, so come on out! On Saturday, June 18th, we had our first Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) Food Drive at the Walmart on Dunlawton Ave., in Port Orange. I would like to personally thank all the members who came out on a very hot Saturday to help with this worthy cause. As a result of your efforts, our club raised $200 in cash donations, 500 lbs. of food, 3 televisions, and 12 bags of clothing, sheets, cleaning products, and personal items. I would like to see if we could do this type of drive twice a year. Great job, PICC! Director…….Gene Gross Things have slowed down due to hot temps of the Florida summers. I want thank all the members new and old for helping with the food drive at Walmart, with a special thanks to Jack for doing a great job organizing it. Plans are continuing for the New Orleans trip. Call me crazy, but I'm not convinced the mid-engine Corvette is the next Corvette. The rumor is strong, yes. And, contrary to some of the comments on our site, Car and Driver leader of the mid-engine Corvette speculation brigade - has a pretty good record predicting future models. But it's another comment that got me thinking: or maybe it's a Cadillac. There is clearly something mid-engine going on at GM, and I think it makes sense for the car to be a Cadillac. First off, check out how sweet the 2002 Cadillac Cien concept car still looks in the photo above. Second, there are too many holes in the mid-engine Corvette theory. There are too many holes in the mid-engine Corvette theory. The C7 is relatively young in Corvette years, starting production almost three years ago as a 2014 model. Showing a 2019 model at the 2018 North American International Auto Show would kill sales of a strong-selling car before its time. Not to mention it would only mean a short run for the Grand Sport, which was the best-selling version of the previous generation. More stuff doesn't add up. Mid-engine cars are, in general, more expensive. Moving the Vette upmarket leaves a void that the Camaro does not fill. There's not much overlap between Camaro and Corvette customers. Corvette owners are older and enjoy features like a big trunk that holds golf clubs. Mid-engine means less trunk space and alienating a happy, loyal buyer. Also, more than 60 years of history. The Corvette is an icon along the likes of the Porsche 911 and Ford Mustang. I'm not sure the car-buying public wants a Corvette that abandons all previous conventions. And big changes bring uncertainty - I don't think GM would make such a risky bet. Chevrolet could build a mid-engine ZR1, you might say, and keep the other Corvettes front -engine. Yes they could, and it would cost a ton of money. And they still need to fund development of that front-engine car. I highly doubt the corporate accountants would go for that. But a Cadillac? Totally. Cadillac is in the middle of a brand repositioning. GM is throwing money at this effort. A mid-engine halo car is the just the splash the brand needs to shake off the ghosts of Fleetwoods past. And it's already in Cadillac President Johan De Nysschen's playbook. He was in charge of Audi's North America arm when the R8 came out. A Caddy sports car priced above $100,000 isn't that unreasonable when you can already price a CTS-V in that range. A mid-engine halo car is the just the splash Cadillac needs to shake off the ghosts of Fleetwoods past. Switch the NAIAS debut rumor to Cadillac, maybe even make it for 2017. Remove the conflict of abandoning Corvette history or running two costly model developments for one car. Heck, a mid-engine Cadillac could even act as a Trojan horse if the rumored demise of the current small-block engine is true. Launch a high-powered overhead-cam V8 in the Caddy and after a few years Corvette fans will be begging for an engine swap instead of grabbing their pitchforks and demanding more pushrods. I wouldn't be surprised if Corvette engineers, or former Corvette engineers, are working on a mid-engine car. There's a lot of talent working on GM's performance vehicles, and people move between teams on a regular basis. And the Corvette's Bowling Green, Kentucky plant is a great place to make a low-volume sports car with advanced materials. But it's not clear that GM plus mid-engine equals Corvette. While we're still making random guesses, my money is on Cadillac Driving a Model T You’re never too old to learn a new skill – or, as it turns out, an old one. Nearly 500 classic car enthusiasts have enrolled in a series of Ford Model T driving courses being offered this summer at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Mich. That is 125 more students than participated last year.Jay Follis, the museum’s marketing director, is thrilled by the response. Gilmore’s Model T driving program, the nation’s oldest, began more than a decade ago.“Think of it as going back to driver’s training,” Follis said. “Old school, that is.”Introduced by Henry Ford more than 100 years ago, the Model T is considered by many to be the most significant car in automotive history because it brought affordable ownership to the masses. According to the History Channel, the Model T “revolutionized transportation in America, changing the way Americans live, work and travel.” More than 15 million Model T vehicles were built from 1908-27, but most classic car enthusiasts have never driven one. That’s where the Gilmore program comes in. Each class, which is about three hours long, teaches the history of the Model T and the Ford Motor Company before participants slide behind the wheel and learn the skills necessary to drive a Model T. While the cars may appear simplistic by today’s standards, they present a challenge to drivers of modern cars. A crank is required to start the car, which is controlled through the use of three pedals on the floor, a handle beside the seat, and two small levers on the steering wheel. The Gilmore has a fleet of seven authentic 1914-26 Model T vehicles in various body styles. Instructors are all Model T owners who volunteer their time to support the museum and the program, some of whom drive as far as two hours each way. In addition, four instructors bring their own cars. Two volunteers maintain the fleet. Each class member is given the opportunity to drive at least two different vehicles on the museum’s two miles of paved roadway. “We’ve taught people as young as 14 and as old as 85, with several groups consisting of three generations,” Follis said. “We keep it fast paced, and everyone has a blast.” The Gilmore Auto Museum, located about 20 minutes northeast of Kalamazoo, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Model T program is supported by AAA, which is marking its 100th year in Michigan. Classes began in May and will continue through the fall. Upcoming dates are June 29, July 16 and 31, Aug. 21, and Sept. 18 and 28. Cost is $105 per student . Social Committee We had our June Men's Appreciation Brunch at Top Gun of Volusia.
