Club Happenings Bubbles From Around the World Join fellow members on Thursday, December 4 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for another in the popular series of wine tastings. This month, we’ll sample a variety of premium champagnes and sparkling wines from around the world. Among those to be sampled are: Cristalino Brut (Spain) Domain Carneros Brut (California) LaMarca Prosecco (Italy) Taittinger Brut (France) Sparkling Syrah (South Africa) A selection of hors d’oeuvres paired specifically for each featured beverage will be presented by Chef Tim. The GRAPE Escape Wine Sale Members are invited to the Mansion on Saturday, December 6 from 11 a.m. - 3p.m. to participate in a wine sale as we attempt to clear out our cellar of existing product. Offered for sale will be rare, hard to find wines as well as a variety of popular older vintages. Prices range from $20 - $100. For more information, call Matthew Achorn at 421-2233. Save the Date: culinary cookoff The finals of the GATE Hospitality Group’s “Culinary Cook Off ” will take place on Friday, January 30 from 7-9 p.m. at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. Featured will be the four winning chefs from preliminary cook-offs conducted at each of the four GATE Clubs earlier in the fall. Each finalist will showcase their signature dish while members taste and vote on their favorite culinary presentation. Members are encouraged to come out and cheer on EFYCC’s own Kenneth Tobin as he competes for the top prize. More info to come next month. Wheelhouse Café News Effective December 1, the Wheel House Café will cease food and beverage service for the winter season. It will reopen in early spring. NEW! A Partner That Never Tires Epping Forest tennis enthusiasts will appreciate the newest addition to the Racquet Club – an automatic ball machine. Here’s the perfect partner to practice the strokes you’ve learned during the Club’s instructional clinics. The machine will propel tennis balls at various speeds with both topspin and backspin. It’s an ideal training aid to meet the needs of beginners to advanced players. The machine can be rented for 30-minutes ($8) and 60-minutes ($15). Call the Fitness Center 739-7023 for reservations. On the courts with Christy Haddock CARDIO TENNIS Join us every Friday at 9:30 a.m. as we combine an exhilarating cardio workout with up-tempo tennis instruction. Try tossing the ball less far forward and lean in more just before the swing. Also, if you toss the ball much higher than your point of contact, it will produce a downward vector as it descends toward your racket. Need additional assistance with your game? Two new members to the EFYCC family have added their boats to the Club’s growing marina scene. Let’s welcome Joe Begley and his 32-foot Beneteau named “At Last”. This sleek, sloop rig sailboat fared well in the Fastest in Forest Regatta held in September. We also greet Peter and Lynn Bream who have chosen Epping to dock their 33-foot classic antique motor yacht, “The Huckster”. This rare, fiberglass sheathed design was built in 1948 and is one of only three models ever built. Welcome aboard to our new members! Kings Day Regatta Epping Forest hosted the 23rd Annual Kings Day Regatta last month with sixteen boats competing for the coveted title. EFYCC’s very own Allen Jones on board “Bernoulli” brought home a first place victory in the NonSpinnaker/ Cruiser combined class. Other members performing well on the St. Johns River were Madalin Keeble aboard “PHRFection” and Kim Brew on “Kaos”. Special thanks go to Dr. William Quinlin on the Committee Boat and Jonah Vroegindewey, the Race Committee Assistant for their time and efforts in making this prestigious regatta such a success "The Huckster" Happy Boating! Members looking for a fun and exhilarating afternoon for the entire family are urged to try boating on the St. Johns. The Marina rents Kayaks, Lasers, Club 420 sailboats and even Paddleboards. A variety of special marina-themed activities are being planned for Epping’s younger members during December’s two-week holiday school recess. Here’s just a sampling of the fun and excitement to expect: • Big boat sailing and cruising • Jungle cruises to nearby tributaries • Fishing and bird watching • Small boat sailing with instruction • Field trip to the MOSH via • Stand up paddle boarding boat each Friday • Kayaking All activities will be guided by certified and experienced leaders. Each camp is featured 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on December 22, 23, 26, 29, 30 and January 2. Snacks and lunch are provided. The price is $40 per member and $45 per guest of member. Early registration is encouraged as camp space is limited. Recreation Kids Pizza Party The next Pizza Party for Kids (4-12 yrs.) is scheduled for Friday, December 19 from 6:30-10 p.m. in the Cub’s Den. All attending will enjoy a night filled with fun crafts and activities. Pizza, beverages and a dessert treat will be served. The cost is $15 per child and $10 for each additional sibling. Gingerbread House Decorating A Gingerbread House Decorating party for members is scheduled for Saturday, December 13 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Wheel House Café.
