Delta Annual Report FY 2013 A Message from the CEO “Delta works in partnership with business, government, and communities in the Great Lakes region to create and implement innovative, market-driven solutions that build environmental resilience, economic vitality, and healthy communities.” FY2013 PROJECTS Horween Leather Urban Wood Delta Institute explored the feasibility of various strategies to utilize urban wood for economic development. Delta worked with industrial wood users to understand buying behavior, learned about the urban wood process from collection to market entry, and advanced Tree Care Industry standards for wood harvesting. Delta continues to look at the demand side of urban wood utilization. Delta completed a waste audit for prominent leather manufacturer Horween Leather Company and helped evaluate a energy and water use. harmless gases Muskegon Phytoremediation As a part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Delta began x 3,076 trees in Muskegon, Michigan in late 2012. To date, over 3,000 poplar trees have been planted on contaminated sites to remediate heavy metals and oils from soil and groundwater, as well as reduce Challenge, which engages Chicago buildings, businesses, and employees to improve sustainability in the workplace. Rebuilding Exchange It’s been a year of change and growth for the Rebuilding Exchange (RX). The RX moved a half block west on Webster to expand their order to carry the RX Made reclaimed wood bottle opener. Building the deconstruction and reuse industry in the Chicagoland region, the RX worked with Cook County to develop and launch the Deconstruction, Demolition and Debris ordinance requiring 70% recycling in demolition and 5% for reuse. Finally, Executive Director, Elise Zelechowski, gave a TEDx Talk on Reimagining Waste and the Rebuilding Exchange. Making this vision a reality will require creativity, broad participation in developing solutions, and new approaches to old problems.
