Heat waves? Bring ’em on. Storms? Piece of cake. Tower fan failure? No problem. The AquaEdge™
screw chiller with Greenspeed® intelligence from Carrier is engineered to thrive in situations other
chillers can’t survive. With surge-free performance, variable-speed range twice that of other chillers
and a unique compressor design that minimizes the need for scheduled maintenance. Oh, and it’s
remarkably quiet next to comparable centrifugal chillers.
Day in, day out, no chiller keeps its cool quite like the AquaEdge chiller.
For all your building design needs, visit carrier23xrvchiller.com.

IDEA Chair
Affiliated Engineers, Inc.
Director of Business Development
[email protected]
On behalf of the IDEA Board of Directors and
staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our
105th Annual Conference – Moving Community
Energy Forward. Please join me in thanking
our host, Seattle Steam, for inviting us to this
vibrant city leading the way for sustainability,
commerce, culture and sports (go Seahawks)!
We are sure you will benefit from an outstanding technical program, an impressive
group of companies displaying their equipment, technology and services and perhaps
most of all, networking with your fellow IDEA
members. As always, we sincerely appreciate
the contributions of our IDEA staff including
Jenna Anglin, Brad Bradford and Laxmi Rao
for assembling another outstanding technical
program, the benefits of which you will be sure
to realize after returning home.
With Seattle Steam as conference host, you
are visiting one of the premier district steam
systems in the world. You will have the opportunity to tour Seattle Steam’s Biomass facility
on Wednesday morning to gain an appreciation of some of the technologies that have
district energy poised as a vital component of
our energy future.
For many reasons, June is a time of transition
for your IDEA Board Members and this year is
no different. Please join me in thanking Past
Chair Joe Brillhart of Johnson Controls for his
many years of dedicated service not only to
IDEA, but to the district energy industry.
We also thank my colleague Lynn Crawford of
Affiliated Engineers, Inc., Jonathan Spreeman
of Trane and Aurel Selezeanu of Duke University for their many years of service on the
Board of Directors. We look forward to their
continued passion for district energy.
As we move forward, please join me in recognizing Tim Griffin of RMF Engineering who
stands in nomination for the position of
second vice-chair. IDEA is grateful for Tim’s
extensive contributions and looks forward to

his continuing leadership and service to our
community.
We are fortunate to have an excellent slate
of nominees for the Board this year. Along
with renewal for another term for current
directors, Scott Clark, Burns & McDonnell,
Robert Manning, Harvard University, a terrific
blend of talent stands in nomination, including
Buddy Doll of Johnson Controls, Kevin Fox,
Jacobs Engineering Group, Meghan Reisterer,
Oberlin College and Mark Vogler, Citizens
Energy Group. I applaud them for making this
important commitment to IDEA.
At the Chair’s Banquet on Tuesday night, I
will have the privilege of passing the gavel
to Ken Smith, President and CEO of District
Energy St. Paul and Evergreen Energy as my
successor to serve as Chair of the association.
Ken has been an active member of IDEA for
over twenty years and brings an impressive
combination of district energy experience with
operational and technical acumen. IDEA will
be well-served with Ken at the helm.
In closing, please accept my thanks for allowing
me to serve as your Chair for this past year.
It has been an honor. This short time only
served to solidify the belief in IDEA that I have
had for many years. Through your continued
hard work, enthusiasm and collegial spirit,
district energy and community energy will continue to be a critical component of future
energy solutions. Please enjoy your time in
Seattle and thank you for choosing IDEA.

President’s Welcome
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Robert P. Thornton
President & CEO
[email protected]
It’s my pleasure to welcome you to the International District Energy Association’s105th
Annual Conference & Trade Show – IDEA2014:
Moving Community Energy Forward. Thank
you for joining us in Seattle and for participating in the advancement of our association and
our industry.
For over a century, IDEA members and guests
have come together every year to share ideas,
exchange solutions and to learn about new
innovations, challenges and opportunities. This
year, our program features a distinguished
panel of industry leaders from around the
globe, including the U.S, Germany, Denmark,
Sweden, United Arab Emirates, and Canada to
discuss emerging trends and policies in
deploying district energy solutions for cities,
towns and communities. We will hear from
Heather Zichal, former energy and environment advisor to President Obama who will
share insights and guidance on how to make a
stronger case for district energy. We hope you
will listen in and interact with our panelists.
During this conference we also take stock of
our progress and recognize achievement and
innovation in our industry. Along with traditions like the System of the Year and DE Space
Awards, we continue the IDEA Innovation Award
started last year by Past Chair Joe Brillhart to
spotlight member accomplishments in technology, operations or optimization. We hope
these examples of ingenuity and operational
excellence will inform and inspire others.

By coming together here in Seattle, we all gain
professionally from the technical and business
discussions so important to our industry momentum. By learning and exchanging experiences, we emerge even more motivated and
energized to collaborate on challenges best
suited for collective industry advocacy. And finally, in reconnecting with industry colleagues
and friends, we continue to grow personally
and professionally as our businesses prosper
and our horizons expand.
I extend a special welcome to a large number
of people who are joining us for the very first
time and of course, I am pleased to welcome
back many colleagues and friends for whom
the IDEA Conference serves as an annual reminder of our common bonds and interests.
Let’s all make a special effort to welcome our
past and new participants — all are vital to
IDEA’s longevity and continued success.
For me personally, it is a great privilege to be
part of IDEA and to serve this important industry at this point in time. In closing, I want to
thank the dedicated staff of IDEA and all the
presenters, moderators and panelists for their
contributions to this 105th Annual Conference
& Trade Show. I want to congratulate Patti
Wilson on a very successful term as IDEA Chair
and thank all the members of the Executive
Committee and the Board of Directors for their
solid support and contributions throughout
the year. I hope you all enjoy the time we spend
together here in Seattle and are enriched by
the experience.
Best regards,
IDEA is grateful to the ongoing contributions of
our 100+ Business Partner Exhibitors and the
valuable support of our many Sponsors, who
make it financially possible to offer a robust
conference event. I urge you to visit our trade
show and talk with our members. They offer an
impressive array of technologies with realworld experience and are eager to help any
and all. I want to thank our sponsors for their
valuable support of IDEA in helping to generously underwrite our conference program. We
could not do it without you.

that reduce America’s dependence on foreign
oil, protect public health and our environment,
and address global climate change. According
to National Journal, she “developed a reputation among players across the energy
spectrum as a smart, pragmatic, and serious
player,” and POLITICO reported that, “one
former White House official [said] that Zichal
was the most effective person they worked
with on energy and environmental issues at
the White House.”
HEATHER ZICHAL
Former Deputy Assistant to the President
for Energy and Climate Change
Heather Zichal is the former deputy assistant
to the president for energy and climate
change. She was the first person to hold this
title (Obama was the first president to merge
the issues of energy and climate change and
elevate the position to a Cabinet level), and
she helped shape and execute many of the
president’s top priorities, including establishing historic new fuel economy standards,
reducing mercury pollution, and supporting
clean energy deployment in the United States.
His most senior White House aide on energy
and climate change and one of his last 2008
campaign advisors to still be in the administration, Zichal was exposed to every major
decision on energy and climate issues and has
been a strong and steady voice for policies
An energy-policy expert with deep roots in
the environmental-advocacy community, in
presentations Zichal shares insights on our
nation’s energy policy, the likelihood and
ramifications of energy independence, and
how energy policy affects the economy and
business.
Most Trusted White House Energy Aide
Zichal was instrumental in developing
President Obama’s second-term climate
agenda, which was unveiled in a one-hour
speech hailed by historians as the most
significant address ever given by a president
on an environmental issue. She was also the
architect of the EPA’s first ever greenhouse
gas controls for power plants and served as
one of the public faces of the administration’s
approach of addressing climate change via
federal regulatory action. The White House
also credits Zichal with implementing a plan to
double wind and solar generation in the
president’s first term, as well as spearheading
the response to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil
spill that included overseeing a subsequent
overhaul of offshore oil and gas safety
standards. Understanding the political and
economic challenges of energy issues, Zichal
worked with car manufacturers and fossil fuel
producers to balance the goal of curbing
pollution against putting an undue burden on
the economy. The resultant deal to boost fuel
efficiency on new cars was backed by the auto
industry. In 2008, Zichal also helped craft the
energy and climate portions of the president’s
economic-stimulus law, which injected $70
billion in fresh spending on clean-energy
projects into the economy.
Prior to joining the administration, Zichal
served as a policy director to the Obama
Campaign, where she helped craft the 2008
energy platform and served on the ObamaBiden Transition Project in its Energy and
Environment Policy Working Group. Before
that, she served as the legislative director to
Senator John Kerry after managing energy and
environmental issues in the 2004 Presidential
campaign. She also served as legislative
director for Congressmen Frank Pallone (D-NJ)
and Rush Holt (D-NJ).
She attended Cook College at Rutgers
University, where she studied environmental
policy.
