The Story of Purim
King Ahashuerus, the ruler of Persia, gave a royal
banquet in the capital city of Shushan. He ordered his
wife, Queen Vashti, to provide entertainment for the
guests. Well, Queen Vashti would have no such thing,
and was removed from her royal position. With advice from
his counselors, Ahashuerus held a council to choose a
new queen. Mordechai, a Jewish man living in Shushan,
encouraged his beautiful and kind niece Esther to enter
the competition. Esther, upon entering the palace, did not
reveal that she was Jewish. Mordechai often sat near the
gate of the King’s palace, just to check on Esther.
One day Mordechai overheard two
guards plotting to kill the king, and told
Esther. The matter was investigated and
found to be true. Mordechai’s deed was
recorded. Meanwhile…. Back inside the
Palace a wicked man, Haman, was
plotting to kill the Jews. He drew “Purim”
– a kind of lottery - to determine the day
he would carry out his evil deed. Esther,
guided by Mordechai, foiled Haman’s plan
and the Jews were saved. The fate that
Haman planned for the Jews became his
own!

Purim is a holiday of
sweetness and joy, a time
when we reflect on the power
of an individual and the
victory of the Jewish nation in
the face of destruction. One
of the elements of Purim is
the obligatory giving of food
gifts to friends and family. We
are commanded to give at least two
foods to at least one person, and they
must be ready-to-eat food items.
Mordechai, one of the Purim heroes,
instituted the practice of Mishloach
Manot, as is quoted in the Megillah
“Mordechai…enjoined the (Jews) to
make the fourteenth day of the month
of Adar…feasting and joy, and sending
portions one to another, and gifts to the
poor.”( Book of Esther, Ch.9).
WRJ is enabling Beth Davidites to
fulfill both Mitzvot of giving Mishloach
Manot - to friends and family
and to the poor. The
proceeds will benefit Aid For
Friends, the Coalition Against
Hunger, the General Philip
Kearny Elementary School
and Beth David. We give gifts
of food on Purim to
strengthen our bonds of
friendship with our follow Jews and with
those less fortunate. Please send
Mishloach Manot to friends, teachers,
clergy, staff, grandchildren, college
students and others. We are extending
our order deadline through March 7,
2016.
WRJ not only donates to those who
suffer from hunger but is also
committed to helping educate the
community on facts about hunger. On
March 18, 2016 Kathy Fisher, Policy
Manager of Greater Philadelphia
Coalition Against Hunger, will present
the current and pressing public policy
issues impacting the fight against
hunger. As Policy Manager, she
performs research, policy and data
analysis. She presents information to
elected officials, service providers and
community members, and works with
anti-hunger and nutrition partners to
promote programs that serve those
who struggle with
hunger. That
evening there will be a Schmooze,
followed by Friday Night Services.

It’s Quizzo time on Sunday
evening, March 13th at the

Pub
in
Conshohocken!! Only $35 per
person. The evening includes
Philly Cheesesteaks, Turkey
Hoagies, Spinach Calzones,
Caesar Salad, Soft Pretzels,
an assortment of Tastykakes,
cash bar, and QUIZZO!! What
is Quizzo?? Quizzo is a pub live quiz
trivia game. The game is played in
teams where each team attempts to
answer the most trivia questions
correctly. The teams compete in
a trivia game consisting of three
to six rounds with 10 questions
each, although this varies by
venue.
We expect to have
teams consisting of six players.
The questions asked can vary
from academic questions to
sports
and
entertainment.
Answers are either written down
on a slip of paper to be collected at the
end of each round, or more recently at
some venues by specially designed
computer devices that are distributed to
each team. At the end of the game the
winning team is determined and receives
prizes. This event will be open to the
entire congregation, but participation is
limited and is filling up quickly. Act now

B’nai Mitzvah - Mazel Tov
Sarah Caroline Singer - March 5,
daughter of Wendy Manko Singer and
Steve Singer. For her Mitzvah Project,
Sarah volunteered at The Lankenau
Medical Center's Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit and will be making a donation
to the Joshua Harris Singer Memorial Fund
at the Lankenau Medical Center's NICU in honor of the
wonderful nurses who took care of her brother, Joshua,
whom she lost due to an unknown connective tissue
disease. Sarah went every other Sunday morning to
assist the NICU staff in any way she could as they cared
for the newborn patients. Sarah attends Welsh Valley
Middle School where she is in 7th grade and her interest
is dance: ballet, point, tap, jazz and contemporary
genres. Sarah is proud to be the fourth generation of
Mankos at Beth David, and the third generation to
become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah here.
Hallie Maejean Bender – March 12,
daughter of Cari Feiler Bender & Rodd
Bender. For her Mitzvah Project, Hallie
has volunteered with the Red Paw
Emergency Relief Team for more than
three years, an emergency services
organization that provides search and rescue, transport,
veterinary care, and shelter to animals displaced by fires
and other disasters throughout the Philadelphia area. She
has participated in outreach events to provide information
and place for adoption animals that could not be reunited
with their owners, organized drives to collect pet supplies
and other products for the animals’ care, and held a bake
sale to raise funds for Red Paw. Hallie’s love of animals
has made this project very meaningful for her. Hallie’s
interests range from gymnastics, tennis, lacrosse, and
summer camp, to crafting and baking. Hallie is in 7th
grade at Friends’ Central School.

Sharon Gershoni is an artist and a scientist. She was graduated from the Bezalel
Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, and completed a doctorate in image engineering
and visual perception at Chiba University in Japan. She worked on research at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem and developed a career as an artist in Japan. In 2004 her artwork
received the Japanese National Prize for Photography, and in 2005 she received the
Kodak Prize. Since then, her work has been exhibited and collected by museums and
galleries in the US and Europe. In 2006, she joined her life partner in Philadelphia. She
developed and taught courses on Israeli Art, Text and Art and Modern Hebrew at the
Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and in synagogues.
