BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Dear Members, Supporters and Friends:
CHAIRMAN
Herbert L. Camp
We are pleased to present The Royal Oak Foundation’s 2013 Annual Report and to share the record of a landmark year
in advancing our mission to inspire Americans to engage with and support the work of the National Trust of England,
VICE CHAIRMAN
Wales
and Northern Ireland. 2013 was a major milestone in being the Foundation’s 40th anniversary year as well as the
Bruce Coleman
Perkins
concluding year of our Campaign for Knole, which surpassed our goal to raise $1,250,000 to fund the conservation of
TREASURER
Knole’s Ballroom and its contents. This important success is a result of a broad-based effort, led by our Board and the
Charlotte P.Campaign
ArmstrongChair, Lynne Rickabaugh of Boston, as well as all our Leadership Level donors and hundreds of members
and supporters from all across the U.S., who form the bedrock of all our efforts. We extend our special appreciation
SECRETARY
to Board member David Beal, who did extraordinary work in recreating Lord Sackville’s dinner of 1904 for the CamIan Hooper
paign’s gala dinner in the Great Hall at Knole on September 15 (see pages 9 & 10).

Our

for celebrating our 40th – or our Ruby Jubilee – and we paid tribute to four individuals who each have served

the Foundation for over 20 years: staff members Winifred Cyrus, Robert Dennis and Janet Lizza and volunteer Jessie

attingham summer school Scholarships
Royal Oak awarded $22,500 to the American Friends of Attingham in support of full and partial scholarships for Americans
participating in the 2013 Attingham Summer School. Since its inception in 1952, the Attingham Summer School has hosted
numerous American scholars, curators, architects and designers, acquainting them with the architectural and social history of
the English country house over several centuries. Royal Oak’s support of over $450,000 to date has enabled over 100 Americans to
participate in this program.

Magnificence Preserved: The Campaign for Knole
Knole is a magnificent house, and Royal Oak’s supporters responded magnificently to our
2012-2013 Campaign for Knole, which sought to raise $1,000,000 to fund the conservation
of Knole’s Ballroom and its contents, one of the most important and complete examples
of early Jacobean interior decoration in Britain. Your support pushed us past the goal to
a final tally of $1,250,000. We are grateful to the more than 500 supporters from around
the United States, who made this the most successful campaign for a single National Trust
property in our 40 year-long history.

Timeless Design Gala
On November 5, 2013, The Royal Oak Foundation held its 15th Timeless Design & Gala Benefit at the Metropolitan Club in New
York City. Proceeds of the gala support the Foundation’s programs in the United States and its work with the National Trust of
England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Royal Oak’s Board of Directors awarded the Kravet family with the 2013 Timeless Design Award. Kravet Inc. is a global
leader in decorative textiles and furnishings and patron of leading designers across the United States and the United Kingdom.
Royal Oak honored the Kravets for the pivotal role they play in the Anglo-American design world and their enduring legacy as a
family-owned firm, founded by Samuel Kravet in 1918. In our 40th Anniversary year, it was particularly appropriate to honor
the Kravets, who have supported the Foundation’s work through the licensed Royal Oak textile lines and sponsorship of the
Timeless Design Gala.
The Foundation’s 2013 Heritage Award was awarded to the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library . In honoring Winterthur, Royal Oak recognized the preeminent role that the institution plays in conserving and presenting American decorative
arts for a global audience. As one of the world’s leading centers for the collection, conservation, and education of the public and
specialists about the decorative arts and design, Winterthur’s mission aligns strongly with that of the National Trust.

Experience | Membership
One of the three principal tenets of the Foundation’s mission is to inspire Americans to experience places of historic and natural
significance in the United Kingdom in partnership with the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Expanding Royal Oak membership and the free access to Trust properties that it provides for Americans is fundamental to fulfilling
our mission. Our 2012-2016 Strategic Plan calls for increasing membership to 7,500 households by the end of 2015.
The Foundation’s Membership Committee and staff are focusing our resources on recruitment of Royal Oak members at
National Trust properties, as we believe that these travelers have already demonstrated a strong interest in the Trust by
their very presence at the properties. Fundamental to this strategy is integrating Royal Oak into the recruitment practices
of the Trust and providing recruitment staff with the information to effectively promote the benefits of Royal Oak membership. We have also decided to concentrate these efforts in the first stage of this project on the Trust’s London and South
East Region, which has the greatest number of American visitors.
Lisa Edinborough, Visitor Experience and Enterprise Manager (far left) with
Jan Lizza, Winifred Cyrus and Sean Sawyer (far right), and two members of the
Visitor Reception staff at Hidcote, one of the most successful properties for ROF
membership recruitment.
(far left) Sue Webb, Visitor Services Team Leader, and General Manager Hester
Liakos with several members of the recruiting staff at Sissinghurst, the property
that recruited the most Royal Oak members in 2013.
In March 2013, Winifred Cyrus (Director of Member Services) and Janet Lizza (Member Services Associate)
traveled to the U.K. with Executive Director Sean Sawyer to meet with senior staff at Heelis (the National
Trust’s headquarters) in the departments of Membership, Print and Production,
Fundraising, and Corporate Partnership. They also attended the annual Recruiters’ Conference for the South East Region, where they gave a presentation about
Royal Oak and discussed strategy with the group.
Meetings with recruitment staff at ten key properties in the highly visited South
East region provided the opportunity to explore what works and what more is
needed to present Royal Oak membership successfully.
One of the key tools used by recruiters is Royal Oak’s “American Visitors” leaflet
(see cover image on right). Discussions with recruiters provided many ideas about
how to improve this crucial promotional piece. The leaflet was redesigned as a
four-page brochure, which allowed for more information about Royal Oak’s
mission and programs. The new brochure was printed in the U.K. and made
available to properties in time for the Spring 2014 travel season.
At the December meeting of Royal Oak’s Board of Directors, the decision was
made to hire the U.K. consulting firm, Your Membership Matters, headed by Alex
Youel, the Trust’s former national Director of Membership Services, to assist the
Foundation in attaining its membership recruitment goals as they pertain to this
specific group of travelers to the U.K.

JUST GO! HOLIDAYS
In 2013 Royal Oak announced a new partnership with Just Go! Holidays, a motor coach tour company that
specializes in tours around the UK and much of continental Europe. This union provided Royal Oak
members with a customized, moderately-priced travel opportunity to discover iconic National Trust country
houses and gardens in some of the most beautiful and historic regions of Britain.

Single supplement £300
We'll travel to the West Country to visit
Tyntesfield, one of the Trust's more recent
acquisitions. This eccentric house is a
fabulous Gothic Revival confection of turrets
and ornate stonework. Its construction was
financed by less romantic means, however –
the Gibbs family business of importing guano
back from South America.
From there we’ll continue south-west towards
pretty Devon to check in to the Thurlestone
Hotel. After unpacking and freshening up,
dinner will be served.
Tuesday 25th June: Coleton Fishacre
After breakfast we’ll travel to Coleton
Fishacre. Built in the 1920s by theatrical
couple the D'Oyly Cartes as a fabulous venue
for their weekend house parties, this Arts and
Crafts-style house also boasts a magical garden
with sea views. Here we’ll join a private
guided tour.
From there we'll return to the hotel for dinner.
Brixham Harbour
Mid-afternoon, we'll leave Coleton
Fishacre and go to Salcombe, a
beautiful fishing village famous
for its pastel-coloured houses
built into the hillside.
After a couple of hours
we’ll return to the hotel for
a relaxing evening and
dinner.
Your Hotels
Wednesday 26th June: Cotehele
We’ll spend the day at Cotehele, an imposing
Tudor house packed to the rafters with
treasure, including outstanding collections of
armour, textiles and furniture. In the grounds
is a medieval dovecote and working flour mill.
We'll find out more during an illustrated talk,
complete with tea, coffee and biscuits. Lunch at
the estate’s traditional pub – the 'Edgcumbe on
the Quay' – is included.
Nights One & Six
Statue of st Susanna,
Stourhead
Stourhead
Friday 28th June: Stourhead
After breakfast, we'll travel towards
Wiltshire to visit magnificent Stourhead,
understandably described as 'a living work of
art' in 1740. The epitome of elegant Palladian
architecture, it features a unique library and
Chippendale furniture. We’ll join a guided tour
of the famous landscaped garden, as well as
enjoy a private lunch.
We'll continue eastwards towards London and
the Crowne Plaza hotel close to Heathrow,
where we’ll enjoy a farewell dinner before
departure the next day.
Thursday 27th June: Greenway
and historic Brixham
After breakfast we go to the pretty port of
Dartmouth, where we’ll have time to wander
historic old streets such as the Butterwalk
before we board a ferry that will take us along
the Dart Estuary to Greenway. This elegant
Georgian house and its beautiful garden was
the beloved holiday home of world-famous
thriller writer, Agatha Christie.
We’ll return to the hotel for our last night in
Devon.
The Crowne Plaza London Heathrow is
a modern hotel within a couple of miles of
the airport. Comfortable en-suite rooms
are matched by great leisure facilities,
including a large indoor swimming pool
and sauna.
Nights Two to Five
The award-winning Thurlestone Hotel
enjoys a village location right on the
south Devon coast close to Kingsbridge.
First established as a hotel in the late
19th century it’s now a modern hotel that
prides itself on its comfort and service.
Extensive leisure facilities include a great
spa, indoor and outdoor pools, 9-hole golf
course, croquet lawn and tennis courts.
Thurlestone is part of the Pride of Britain
hotel group that is in partnership with the
National Trust.
Please note: gentlemen are politely asked to wear
jackets to dinner.

THE ROYAL OAK FOUNDATION
Dear Members and Friends of Royal Oak,
A GRAND VISION
When Venice ruled the Adriatic and the coastal cities prospered, a new civilization was born. It was
made of local traditions — artistic and architectural — but it also reflected the influence of the Most Serene
Republic. Then there were the surviving monuments testifying to Ancient Rome’s greatness. Today, the
Adriatic coast has revived; once again it offers the pleasures for which it was long famous.
450 Years of Cuban Art & Architecture
We are delighted that Olivier Bernier, author, scholar and lecturer at The Metropolitan Museum
of Art, will accompany us on this voyage. He has planned a series of visual presentations to enhance this
cruise experience — and our evenings will be enriched by onboard musical performances.
We begin in Sicily, that fascinating blend of Roman, Greek, Byzantine and Arab cultures, and
continue our look at ancient Rome as we visit the ruins of that great empire in Albania. Then come the
medieval highlights, from Kotor to charming Dubrovnik. Returning to Italy, the dazzling mosaics of
Ravenna will take us back to the time of one of Rome’s last empresses, Theodora of Byzantium, before our
journey concludes in La Serenissima herself.
An all-day sail adds to the many pleasures of this voyage. From the broad decks of the majestic
Sea Cloud II, we will see the enchanting Adriatic coast as well as great art in every port of call. The
ship’s friendly staff, luxurious accommodations, and fine dining create an onboard ambiance of relaxed
elegance. Life aboard Sea Cloud II has no comparison. When the wind rises, watch the energetic crew
practice the age-old art of setting the sails by hand.
Venice
Ravenna
An optional prelude in Sicily will take us
to the glorious Riace Bronzes, those great masterpieces retrieved from the bottom of the sea. If you
wish to spend more time in Venice, an optional
postlude highlights the dazzling collections of
the Accademia.

Learn | Lectures and Tours
Royal Oak’s Lectures and Tours are the Foundation’s primary vehicle for fostering a greater awareness of the work of
the National Trust among Americans and, more broadly, enhancing the appreciation of Anglo-American cultural
heritage.
Launched in 1975 and made possible by lead funding from The Drue Heinz Trust since 1992, Royal Oak’s Drue Heinz
Lectures bring well-known and respected scholars, curators and authors to speak to audiences around the United
States on topics in British history, architecture, decorative and fine arts, and literature.
In 2013, highlights of the Drue Heinz Lectures included lectures by Dr. Caroline Shenton, Director of the Parliamentary Archives; Clive Aslet, Editor-at-Large of Country Life; The Very Reverend Philip Buckler, Dean of Lincoln Cathedral, and The Very Reverend Dr. John Hall, Dean of Westminster Abbey. There were also lectures about royal dining,
English authors and their houses, the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, and London squares. The Fall 2013
season also marked the first Royal Oak musical performance program, “Music in the Age of Queen Victoria,” held at
Arader Galleries in New York City. Other members-only exclusive events included: a rare private tour of Eero
Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center at JFK, a tea tasting at Harney & Sons with Eric Harney, and a day trip to private
houses on Philadelphia’s Main Line organized with the assistance of Royal Oak Board member Barbara Eberlein.
