Lector Auditions
The Lector Ministry consists of
women and men who, through their
study, prayer, skills and preparation,
proclaim the Word of God to the
assembly.
Lectors need public
speaking skills and a love of sacred
scripture. They are willing to spend
whatever time is required in order to
properly prepare for each proclamation. At this time, there
are a few open positions at some of our weekend liturgies, as
well as our daily Mass liturgies.

Next week, an extra envelope for this
special collection is on your seat at Mass. There is only one
collection during Mass, so please drop both envelopes (your
weekly Casa gift & special collection gift) in the collection
basket. Extra envelopes are available at the front desk.
Simple Thoughts...
How do we respond when someone or
something challenges us? Are we open to hearing or
experiencing something new that could potentially shift
our understanding? What if that something challenges
everything we thought was true? ~ Think of an idea that
you know to be true (I will use the blue sky as an example).
Now, think of someone you listen to, respect and consider
to be wise, and imagine that this person just came up to
you and told you that your idea was wrong (The sky is not
blue, it just appears that way because of the reflection of
the water against our atmosphere). How would you react?
(“I know the sky is blue! How dare you tell me otherwise!
I won’t listen to you anymore!” or “Wow, this is changing
everything I hold true, but I trust you. Please tell me more.”)
This is what is occurring in today’s Gospel. Jesus has
challenged all of His followers. Over the last few weeks we
have been hearing Jesus teach us what is commonly referred
to as the “Bread of Life Discourse.” Jesus is revealing to His
disciples, and to us, that He is the bread of life, true food that
sustains us. After hearing Jesus speak of himself as living
food from Heaven, there were many who could not handle
this new reality and turned their back on Jesus.
Now is our chance to respond. We are offered this
true bread from Heaven, the bread of life, every time we
come to Mass, and every time we have the opportunity to
say, “Amen.” May we always be open to allow God to change
our reality and say, as the disciples did, “We trust you Lord.
You have the words of eternal life.” We may not understand
fully, but we will seek Your wisdom.

21th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today’s gospel we find the disciples murmuring and questioning the words that Jesus has shared
about the Bread of Life. Bread becomes flesh? Eat of it? How can this be? Many who were listening could
not wrap their heads around this, could not trust what Jesus was saying. They chose to return to their old
way of life. Take a moment to reflect on your relationship with Christ. Faith involves trust. How has your
trust in Jesus grown? Gather your family and ask them to define the word “trust” and share examples of
easy and difficult times to trust others or to trust God. Read John 6:60-69 and discuss:
What did Jesus say to upset some of His followers? Why did some decide to quit following Jesus?
Who stayed with Jesus? Why? Would you stay with Jesus?
Following Footsteps Activity: Help each family member trace their own footprint on a piece of paper,
cut it out, and write that person’s name on it. Pass around the footprints so that other family members
can write down or draw ways that they see the footprint owner following Jesus. Share the many ways
each person follows Jesus.
You are what you eat: Take a brown bag containing some healthy and some non-healthy foods in it.
Explain how what you eat affects your health and that you need vitamins and nourishment to grow and
survive. Pull out items from the bag. Healthy or not healthy? Finally talk about Eucharist and how this
Bread of Life nourishes us and gives us strength to follow Jesus.
Concluding Prayer: Loving Father, may we walk in the footsteps of Christ and choose to follow Him along
the path of love that leads to You. We ask this in Christ’s holy name. Amen.

8, 2015 and concludes November 20, 2016. What is mercy? Where does it come from? How do
we show it as Christians? This year we will be breaking open this beautiful concept in discussion,
activity, and service of others. Let’s start by considering these questions as we move toward this
coming Year of Mercy.

FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRIES
A JustFaith story... I began the JustFaith program at the Casa searching for something. I cannot
explain precisely what I was looking for. I’m not sure that I really knew, and I definitely did not know what I
was getting myself into. All I knew is that I had been involved with faith in action ministries in college and
longed for the same experience five years later.
What I found in the Casa JustFaith program was even greater and perhaps something, or someone, I had been
neglecting in my recent years focused on worldly success. What I found was God.
Through God, in the faces of my fellow JF participants, I found the community I had been longing for, just taking
a different form. This time, I was surrounded by searchers from all walks of life, with incredible perspectives and richness
in heart. Through nine months of retreats, immersion trips and weekly gatherings where we prayed, watched videos,
had guest speakers and read various materials all aimed at learning more about our faith and justice issues, we met one
another at a deep level. In contemplating our place in the world, we found it lay among us, especially in those on the
margins of our greater community.
In finding God in these places, I realized how often we may overlook God’s presence in the world—especially in
the darkest places. Without God, so many of the problems of the world seem utterly hopeless. Perhaps that is the easier
way to live our lives, but, to truly live out our universal faith, to truly live out our humanity, we find hope that through
God we can in some small way make a big difference. Our redemption, our purpose and our potential lie in each other,
especially those most vulnerable members of our society.
We graduated from JustFaith in June with a call to action. In a sense, our journey continues. Each one of us, no
matter our age, no matter our privilege, gender, profession, etc. can and must be God’s hands and feet on Earth. Ruth
Soberanes has been a part of the Casa community since her return to the valley two years ago after studying out of
state and country. Ruth participated in JustFaith this last year (2014-2015) and will be joining the Our Ladies Angels
Collections Ministry.

World Day of Peace at the Casa 2015
"Peace Within Our Hearts" Monday, September 21
Celebrate and congratulate our 2015 Casa Peace Award Honoree, Very Reverend
John Hardin, OFM, Provincial Minister of the Province of Saint Barbara of the Order
of Friars Minor. Fr. John is a member of the 10-Year Planning Council to end
chronic homelessness and serves on the Outreach, Assessment and Stabilization
Committee. Over the past year, he has organized talks with community business
leaders to encourage and create dialogue between them and our homeless brothers
and sisters.

During this retreat celebrating Pope Francis, who
is frequently called “the People’s Pope,” as well as
the “Pope of Hope,” presenters and participants
will explore our current Holy Father’s plan for
shepherding the Catholic Church and his joy and
inclusiveness in presenting the Gospel Message in
the Catholic Church and everywhere to everyone.
Spiritual directors will be available to give
retreatants an opportunity to share their faith
journey in individual sessions.
DVD presentation: Fr. Joe Chinnici OFM, is
an Oxford-educated historian, author, teacher
and speaker. He served as Provincial Minister
of the Santa Barbara Province for nine years
and served two terms as Academic Dean at
the Franciscan School of Theology.
Br. Mark Schroeder, OFM is the Animator for
“Franciscans for Justice,” a joint project of the
Provinces of Saint Barbara and Our Lady of
Guadalupe. He is the Guardian at the friary in
Sacramento. Br. Mark is also involved with the
ministry to the homeless.
Facilitator: Larry Fraher, MA, the Casa's
Francican School of Theology liaison, holds
degrees in theological studies and systematic
theology. He is a doctoral candidate at St.
John’s University.
Dr. Michael Dixon has an MA in Theology and
a doctorate in Advanced Pastoral Care. He hosts
“The Bishop’s Hour” on Immaculate Heart Radio
and gives workshops on the Art of Lecturing for
the deacon candidates and laity in the Diocese of
Phoenix and throughout the southwest.

Junipero Serra, OFM was a Spanish Franciscan friar
who founded a mission in Baja California and the
first nine of the 21 Spanish Missions in California.
This workshop will explore the driving force behind
his journey, despite illness and the difficulties of the
age in which he lived. We will take a virtual tour
of each mission he founded and finally his road to
sainthood and the controversy over Pope Francis’
decision to canonize him.
Jeff Campbell is a published author of 18
books including his best-selling work, St.
Francis and the Miracle of Greccio and His
Sandals. He is currently President and CEO
of Vesuvius Press Inc.

Pope Francis has called on us to make room in our
hearts to hear the voice of God, especially in the
cries of the poor. Sadly, we are frequently caught
up in our own pursuits and have not clearly heard
the message. In this workshop we will learn how we
can become vessels of healing to those around us
who are in need. Find out what happened when this
presenter responded to God’s call and how you can
do so, also.
Joyce Coronel is a mother of five sons, a
Catholic journalist, author and speaker.
It was the tragic story of the persecuted
Christians of Iraq turned her world upside
down and reignited her own Catholic faith.

Men in Spirit
We are a men’s group in search of guidance and strength,
bonded by common challenges and faith in a God who
knows us and is always with us. We meet on the 1st
Saturday of every month. Please join us for 7:00 am

The Casa Single Adults Ministry
Widowed? Divorced? Never married? Single spiritual
men and women of all ages gather to share their journey
with like-minded people of faith. We meet at 6:30 pm
on the 2nd Friday of every month and often organize

About the Franciscan Renewal Center
The Franciscan Renewal Center began in 1951 as a place
for retreat programs. Affectionately known as the “Casa
de Paz y Bien” or simply “the Casa,” it is today a Catholic
renewal center in Paradise Valley, Ariz., offering spiritual
growth, healing and transformation that moves lives into
the service of others.
The Casa is an active religious community of the Order
of Friars Minor — part of the worldwide Franciscan
family, following in the footsteps of Sts. Francis and
Clare of Assisi. The Casa is a wholly owned entity of the
Franciscan Province of Saint Barbara, based in Oakland,
Calif., that works cooperatively with the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Phoenix.
Activities at the Casa include daily and Sunday Mass,
retreats, gathering space for non-profit groups, licensed
behavioral health counseling, as well as more than
50 volunteer ministries that give aid to the poor or
vulnerable, empower individuals to improve their
circumstances, and build community fellowship.
