The Pettibon System®
Challenging Conventional Chiropractic
In a career that has spanned more than half a century,
Dr. Pettibon has been unrelenting in demanding that
chiropractic deliver on its promise: provide health care
that enables the human spine to maintain its optimal
structure for normal function. His first challenge to the
profession took place as a student at Cleveland
Chiropractic College.
"I realized that there was no model of a 'normal' spine.
With no optimum normal or optimum spinal position,
there are no origins to measure from. To quote Jack
Welch, a former CEO of GE: 'One can't prove, disprove or
improve that which one can't measure.'
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Dr. Pettibon
established a model of the optimum upright spine and
procedures for taking, marking, and measuring x-rays so
abnormal spinal form can be measured and treatment
effectiveness assessed.
In 1988, Dr. Pettibon was honored for his work as the
recipient of the Daniel David Chiropractic Scientific
Award. But despite more than thirty years of practice, he
couldn't put aside doubts about whether chiropractic
produced permanent spine and postural change.
Putting Conventional Chiropractic Procedures
'To The Test'
In 1991, Dr. Pettibon came out of a third retirement and
moved from his home in Gig Harbor, Washington to South
Carolina to partner with the late Dr. Vern Pierce and
determine 'the truth' about chiropractic clinical
procedures—theirs as well as all the others.
They rented an area of the Sherman Chiropractic College
clinic building for their research. There, Dr. Pettibon and
Vern Pierce used the dissection laboratory and students
willing to be 'subjects' for their experiments.
They studied both normal and aberrant motions of
vertebrae and areas of the spine that were misaligned —
usually by trauma—using a video fluoroscopy x-ray
machine with a twelve-inch intensifying screen. They also
used an in-line x-ray machine with self-centering head
clamps so they could repeatedly take pre and posttreatment x-rays to measurably determine the
effectiveness of various procedures and techniques. An xray digitizer enabled them to compile the measurements
and data that was generated from still and motion x-rays
as well as from other experiments.
The Findings
identified the missing components in
Chiropractic care.
The missing component is
rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal systems soft tissues.
That is, rehabilitation of involved disks, ligaments,
cartilages and postural muscle especially those of the
spine. These are the tissues that are responsible for the
form and function of all spinal hard and soft tissues.
Their findings
From these findings Dr. Pettibon went on to develop and
patent home care, clinical equipment and procedures
that all musculoskeletal practitioners can use and
integrate into and with their present care to prepare the
spine to welcome corrective forces and to strengthen
postural muscles so that the spine can function pain free
throughout life.

Recently Dr. Pettibon has perfected two tractiondecompression tables, with vibration for enhanced
muscle relaxation. The tables are the most versatile and
inexpensive in the market. They are designed so that the
patient can be in control and apply traction pressure to
their pain tolerance which changes each visit. Further,
traction can be applied in both the cervical and lumbar
spine at the same time, or to either the cervical or lumbar
spine separately. Further, the tables allow for full
musculoskeletal traction from the skull to the feet and
ankles at the same time when such traction is needed.
Dr. Pettibon and others presently teach a one day, 6 hour
seminars in the preparation and use of the amazingly
versatile new traction-decompression tables.

The thoracic adjustment is difficult to perform if the patient has soft tissue splinting. It is important
to have several methods of adjusting the mid back. The DUD Thoracic Adjuster incorporates the

The MDT is an electric solenoid driven instrument that is lightweight and versatile. It is designed to
compliment all adjusting techniques by stimulating the nervous system. Based on research under video
fluoroscopy, the multiple toggles are timed at 3.3 per second, making them faster than the muscle's ability to
react. This is VITAL to an effective and painless adjustment for your patient. Further, it was found that seated
adjusting using the MDT was more effective than when the patient was lying down during the adjustment.

This versatile all metal frame table adjusts to the height of the user, insuring

Desk jobs are slowly killing people. Sitting 13+ hours per day is hazardous to your health as recent studies have shown the increased

The 3’x6’ Pettibon Linked Exercise Trainer is for isometric exercises that strengthen
postural muscles and increase endurance. Exercises in most gyms use isotonic (kinetic)
exercises that exercise phasic muscles. These exercises will make one strong, however
they will not help and often hinder correction of the spinal subluxation complexes. Kinetic
exercises should be discontinued during corrective care. Two people at a time can use the
Pettibon Linked Exercise Trainer, making it even more efficient and cost-effective.

Our foam does not go flat! Spinal Molding and Fulcrum exercises restore spinal curves. Spinal Molding
utilizes the Combination Block and the Low Back Support (begins as early as 1st day of care). It is a passive
exercise performed in bed. The Low Back Support is used in the car and at home or office in chairs for all day
support of the lumbar spine.
Fulcrum Exercise Program consists of a Combo Block, Lumbar Dorsal Fulcrum, a 1” lifter and a 2” lifter.
Phasic spinal muscle fibers are changed to postural muscle fibers as a result of displacement subluxations.
Changing of these postural muscle fibers back to phasic is produced by spinal correction. Fulcrum rehab
exercises are necessary to complete and maintain spine and posture correction. Paperwork and Posters sold

Shoulder weighting, with the majority of the weight on the front or back of the low
shoulder, is dependent on the patient’s pelvic position (back or forward relative to
their upper body). Proper weighting causes the patient's “hopping and righting
reflex” to lift the weighted low shoulder while rotating the shoulders into alignment

We send a monthly report of doctors who have successfully completed the online courses to the coordinator at Palmer
College and PACE (Providers of Approved Continuing Education) at the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards at the
beginning of each month. The doctors' chiropractic regulatory boards are then informed by the CE providers. Not all boards
accept online courses for CE hours and not all boards accept courses from Recognized PACE Providers. On our website we
have listed all the CE Re-licensure Requirements for the US and Canada so you can verify what your board accepts. Hours
in this report are calculated based on time spent to complete a course up to the amount available.

All of our tables are designed to stretch, lengthen and re-hydrate discs and
ligaments so that spinal form, function and posture can be restored.
Stretching spinal ligaments is predicated on first overcoming the
resistances of the spine’s slow twitch postural muscles, this requires a
constant force over time, rather than intermittent traction required by fast
twitch phasic muscles. It is designed to work in conjunction with the
Pettibon rehabilitation equipment. Packages are available, ask for details.

Designed with patient comfort & control in mind. Cervical and lumbar traction along with gravity traction are set using a controller.
This table includes belts, harnesses and vibration. It is designed to work in conjunction with the Pettibon Rehabilitation equipment.
As such it is sold in a package.
Patient Controlled
Mechanical &/or Gravity Traction/Decompression
Once positioned, turn on vibration. There are many mechanical &/or
gravity traction combinations. Some are more comfortable than
others for patients.. When traction session is complete, vibration is
turned off before loosening both traction devices.
Disc hydration occurs during traction, increasing the disc size.
Stretching and wobbling post treatment relieves any discomfort from
the newly acquired hydration.
Patients increase/decrease traction to their
tolerance and need. Traction amounts can be
temporarily loosened for changed during use in
order to re-adjust the belts and harnesses for
effectiveness and comfort.
