A Monthly Magazine March 2016 • Volume 56 • Issue 3 The ST. ST. MARK’S MARK’S CATHEDRAL CATHEDRAL SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA www.stmarkscathedral.net Grass Growing on the Prayer Path by the Very Rev. Alston B. Johnson [email protected] In one region of Africa, the first converts to Christianity were very diligent about praying. In fact, the believers each had their own special place outside the village where they went to pray in solitude. The villagers reached these “prayer rooms” by using their own private footpaths through the brush. When grass began to grow over one of these trails, it was evident that the person to whom it belonged was not praying very much. Because these new Christians were concerned for each other’s spiritual welfare, a unique custom sprang up. Whenever anyone noticed an overgrown “Prayer path,” he or she would go to the person and lovingly warn, “Friend, there’s grass on your path!” — (RWD Our Daily Bread, November 18, 1996). Dear Friends, On Ash Wednesday Father Thomas invited us to spend time with God in prayer during Lent. He invited us to ask the question, “Do I have a secret place in which to spend time with God?” That is a wonderful and important question. Do we have that place in our lives, in our hearts and souls, where we might talk to God, and listen for his voice. Sometime we have difficulty knowing whether or not we are actually praying. Sometimes we wonder, “Am I doing this right?” Sometimes we could use a friend or partner to help us find that secret place, and know it as our own place. In the Gospels, Jesus is always encouraging the disciples to go “two by two” into the world, so that they might help one another navigate the sometimes difficult terrain of discipleship. I have found that “two by two” model helpful in my life, especially when it has been difficult to remember the secret place of prayer with God. Some call it spiritual direction, some call it spiritual friendship; from my Boy Scout days, I sometimes call it having a swim-buddy. Having someone with whom to swim in the deeper waters of life and prayer. Or simply someone who can lovingly say, “Friend, there is grass on your prayer path.” (continued on page 2) Holy Week Schedule at St. Mark’s Cathedral March 20 - The Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday 8:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The Liturgy of the Palms and Holy Eucharist March 21 - Monday in Holy Week 7:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist 12:05 p.m. Holy Eucharist March 22- Tuesday in Holy Week 7:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist 12:05 p.m. Holy Eucharist March 23 - Wednesday in Holy Week 7:00 a.m. Holy Eucharist 5:30 p.m. Evening Prayer/Dinner with the Rt. A Stephen Minister does not take the place of that prayerful conversation with God, they simply walk alongside as we return to that place – or perhaps return to prayer and find that God has made a new place for us. Visiting the website below you will find first hand stories of the care folks have received through Stephen Ministry. www.stephenministries.org/stephenministry/default.cfm/1597 You will also find an article in the back of the Cathedral from this webpage. Christ wants to spend time with you in the presence of God. Christ also sends friends and messengers and helpers along our path to help us have that time with God. Perhaps you are in a season of your life when someone to walk with would be a welcome blessing. Our Stephen Ministers are here to walk with you. Godspeed, Alston Philippians 2:5-11 Luke 23:1-49 2016 Lenten Speaker Series Join us each Wednesday in Lent for Noonday Prayer in the Cathedral with our special guest speakers, followed by a light lunch in the Parish Hall. George Gennuso, St. Michaels, Pineville, LA Easter Memorials It is the custom at St. Mark’s at Easter to invite our parish family to make a contribution to the Glory of God and in memory or honor of a loved one. This is not only an appropriate way to honor those who have gone before us, but these gifts make it possible to decorate the Cathedral in a festive manner. If you wish to make a donation please send your check along with the name or names you wish to commemorate to Becky Deverts in the Cathedral office no later than Friday, March 11. Parlor Flowers Would you like to honor your spouse’s birthday? Remember a special person who is deceased? You can honor or memorialize someone with your donation of parlor flowers. Please email Jennifer Varnadore at [email protected] to select a convenient date to provide flowers for our beautiful parlor. It’s easy…you can create an arrangement yourself, provide a plant, or call a florist and arrange for delivery. Thank you for your support of this ministry of the ECW that enhances our fellowship! Barlow,Pauline & Bill Barlow and Nelle & Jim Aimer. Thank you so much for all the prayers, time and effort put into my ordination service. It was spectacular. How blessed to have the gift of music from the choir accompanied and led by Bryan our Canon of Music. The flowers and all the vessels necessary for communion were polished and in their places thanks to the altar guild. The attention of the acolytes, ready to process and serve ensured the service ran smoothly. It was a joy to have Bishop Jake and my clergy friends there to support me with their prayers and love. All my new friends in the congregation who have prayed me to this day, your presence was a gift. I am glad you were able to meet my St. James’ family and the friends who came; all had wonderful things to say about the Cathedral, the people and the service. Thanks to Jennifer who coordinated everything for a delicious reception. It was a day I will always remember. The greenery on the Chapel Altar is given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Gene Rogers, Alan Rogers, Mr. & Mrs. H.E. Rogers and Mr. & Mrs. J.P. Baker. March 13 The greenery on the High Altar is given to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Thomas Chapman, Mr. & Mrs. Emil Henry Herzog, Ward Lay, III and Chapman Carter Lay. The greenery on the Chapel Altar is given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Dr. Ray Morgan and Catherine “Pete” Morgan. March 20 The greenery on the High Altar is given to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Barbara Lanier Allison, Raymond Stewart Allison and Elizabeth Wiggins Lloyd. March 24 The flowers on the High Altar are given To the Honor and Glory of God and His Son, Jesus Christ Our Lord. As you attend services you will see that my role has changed. Now that I am ordained I take on the role of the Deacon during the service. Notice in the prayer book there are small italicized words before different sections of the service. These are called rubrics and are the directions for conduction of a service. In several places you will see where tasks are given to the Deacon. March 27 The flowers on the High Altar are given to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Reginald H. & Hallie Ward Hargrove , Ada & Kemerton Dean, Joseph L. Hargrove, Martha Dean Hargrove Glassell, Nancy Katherine Green Hargrove. The flowers on the Chapel Altar are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Sanders & Alice Fowler, Robert Ward Fowler & Bonnie Perloff Fowler. The main tasks are: • Proclaim the Gospel • May lead the Prayers of the People • Says the bidding to confession • Prepares the table by spreading the corporal down and receiving the gifts from the people then putting the bread and wine into the vessels and places them on the corporal • Assists the clergy at the table as needed • Administers the wine or, if necessary, the bread. • Says the dismissal DEATHS Rest Eternal grant to them, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon them. Delice Lintz, mother of Mikey Carlisle, on February 21, 2016. Connor Bryan Hill, grandson of Ginny Peterson and Dez Hill, great-nephew of Kathryn Gaiennie, on February 4, 2016. May their souls, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. I continue to be in formation as all this is new to me. I have been serving at the altar for many years, but now have additional roles. These changes require practice. Please have patience with me as I will make mistakes, but God knows we are not perfect. Please come and ask me what and why I am doing things, I will try to explain it all to you. Thank you for allowing this new ministry to take place at St Mark’s. I hope it enriches our worship as that is my purpose and intent. Lost Anything at Church? Or maybe you’re just missing some item and have no idea where it might have gone. Deacon Lois Maberry 3 Cathedral School News Music News By Chris Carter If you have been thinking about joining one of St. Mark’s growing choirs, January is the perfect time to do so! If you are an adult, the St. Mark’s Cathedral Choir is for you! This choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:15 – 8:00 pm and sings for the 10:30 Sunday Eucharist. [email protected] Did you know that all St. Mark’s Cathedral School students have Christian Education classes every year? Preschool students attend Godly Play once a week. This is a Montessoribased Christian Education program originally developed by Jerome Berryman. It is similar in many ways to Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, but tends to be more biblically and less sacramentally focused. In this regard it works well in our school setting and provides variety for the parishioner children. If you know of a child between the ages of 6 and 15 that loves to sing, the St. Mark’s Boys and Girls Choir would be an excellent opportunity for them. This choir rehearses on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 – 5:30pm and sings for the 5:15 pm Sunday Choral Evensong during school term. All of our choirs are outreach programs and are open to members of the Shreveport community. So if you know of someone who in not a member of St. Mark’s but loves to sing challenging traditional sacred music, please let them know about our exciting musical opportunities. To join or request additional information, please contact Bryan Mitnaul, Canon for Cathedral Music at 318.226.4034 email him at bryan@ stmarkscathedral.net Children in K5-4th grade attend weekly Christian education classes taught by Jennifer Beruvides. Her curriculum base is the SAES Christian formation curriculum which uses a threeyear cycle of scripture studies tied in to the liturgical year. In addition to that base, she layers in materials from the Peace Builders program and from the Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education’s Virtues program. Finally, School Chaplain Judy Kane teaches 5th-8th grade Christian education classes. For this age group students attend class daily for one quarter of the year. Fifth graders study the Old Testament, 6th Graders study New Testament with a focus on the life of Christ, 7th graders study Christian Ethics, and 8th graders study world religions, beginning with their own family religious tradition and then moving outward to a broad academic study of Christianity in order to have a lens through which to examine each of the major living world religions. In keeping with the best practices of Episcopal schools, our Christian education classes are intended to be as substantive and “academic” as any other class. They are also intended to be formational but not catechetical. We focus on broad and widely shared aspects of Christianity rather than narrow points of doctrine, even as we are clear about our Episcopal understanding and practice of our faith. • Girls’ Bible Study with McKenzie Pugh • Wednesdays from 5:30-7pm in the Youth Lounge, dinner will be served! • Resumes January 6, 2016! • Bring your own Bible that you can write in! Whether our students are parishioners, members of another church, or unchurched, we believe our Christian education classes provide students a strong foundation of Christian faith and give students the tools they need on their spiritual journey throughout their lives. Adult Christian Formation 9:30 am Lectio Divina Taught by Dean Alston Johnson Ministry Center Room 101 4 St Luke’s Medical Ministry St. Luke’s had a busy and challenging month; unexpected RV issues took us to Shreve Island Tire and Service Center for two new tires and some hydraulic issue I am not even going to try and understand, much less explain. I was reminded once again of how many people it takes to do this ministry… those who show up and work the clinics, those who sit in board meetings, who plan and offer assistance…. And those who only know us from a distance, like Billy at Shreve Island. Those who go above and beyond to keep us out there, doing what we do. I hope the Billys of the world understand how important they are to us. People offer up what they can, their gifts and talents, and these come together, each piece important to make St. Luke’s whole. Because of this, St. Luke’s held 13 clinics in January, providing health services to 154 individuals, thanks in no small way to the 35 volunteers who show up so faithfully to do this work. St. Luke’s has once again received a grant from the Grayson Foundation, which provides funding for clinics to serve the Hispanic population in the area. We will continue monthly clinics at Christ the King Catholic Church and plan on adding another clinic, hopefully at Louisiana Downs. A large focus of St. Luke’s is meeting the medical needs of the homeless/housing unstable in the community; grants from the City of Shreveport and Caddo Parish make this work possible. We also partner with Susan G Komen, which provides funds for our breast health programs, and the Community Foundation for outreach and health education. Does it all balance out against the projected expenses? No, but like someone on the board said, we need to step out in faith, and that is what we are doing. Many of you were very generous with your end of the year donations, for which we are all so very grateful. In 2015 St Luke’s provided over $14,000 in direct client needs – medications, both prescriptions and over the counter, eye exams and glasses and bus passes in order for clients to get to appointments throughout the city. Pillars Dinner St. Mark’s Cathedral will be celebrating the ‘Pillars’ of our congregation! All gentlemen 75 years old and older are invited to an appreciation luncheon Sunday, March 13, 6:00pm in the Garden Room. Invitations will also be sent out. Please RSVP to the church office, 221-3360 by March 8. If you need more information or would like to help with the dinner, contact Jennifer Beruvides at [email protected]. Serving at Providence House The Providence House is always in need of volunteers to help serve meals. St. Mark’s has volunteered to serve dinner on the third Sunday of each month. Volunteers need to arrive at4:15pm and should be finished by 5pm. Only 3-4 volunteers are needed each time. Contact Jennifer Beruvides at [email protected] for more information. Don’t forget those clocks! Daylight Saving Time begins March 13. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night! g rainin T l a c i ys k’s Ph y-Friday r a M . a St Mond 0 am 3 5: l thedra a C e At th Come join us every morning at 5:30 then go to Eucharist at 7:00 a.m. It’s a great Lenten Discipline! As we move into the year, we celebrate who we are bound together by a common desire to do good while we are on this earth. We weep together when loss comes… Chuck Ellis lost both his mother and a dear friend in January. We rejoice together when good things come – Lois Maberry was ordained by the Episcopal Church January 30th; without her St. Luke’s would not be the strong and viable ministry it is today. Life continues, and I daily give thanks that I am a part of this thing called St. Luke’s…. the people who serve, who give, who offer up the prayers; and those who allow us to serve them – what a privilege that is. Why are we so afraid of it? And not just our own change – we don’t like it when other people or places do it either. But change should be scary. It should challenge us. It enlightens us to our blind spots and growing edges. It can make us better and take us to a new idea of who we can possibly be. Be the Change That big and scary change. by Brooks Boylan Imagine the followers of Jesus. Imagine Paul. They all went through some huge changes, the kind that rival the best character arcs in literature. [email protected] “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi They went from the “not good enoughs” to fathers of our faith. Look at Jesus after the resurrection. I once heard it said that transition is a pretty word to keep people from being afraid of the inevitable change that they will go through. Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her. Isn’t that the truth? Is there anything scarier than change, besides spiders? ...and clowns... But what is it that is so scary about change? He was no longer what he was, but what He had been sent to be. Is it the loss of the familiar? You can’t tell me that any change we go through is anywhere near as scary as that... Is it the uncertainty of what’s next? Well, we are in the season of change, aren’t we? We are slowly and patiently changing into those Easter people that we long to be. The season of Lent should change us, in significant ways, as we grow, each year, in our understanding of Christ’s love and sacrifice. If it didn’t, then why is it even a thing? Everything changes because it should. Because that is how we are able to be better, greater, more noble. Change is the instrument that brings us closer to realizing the embrace of God’s love that we are already living in. Do you think maybe this is why God tells us to not be afraid 365 times? So that every day we will have the courage to face the change that is waiting for us to be. 6 EYC Calendar Children’s Christian Formation Mondays 4:00-5:00 pm – Middle School Coffice at Rhino Children’s Chapel: starts at 10:30 a.m. Please have children between 1st and 5th grade report to library. Remember Our Fasting Fund For many years it has been the Lenten custom at St. Mark’s to participate in the “Fasting Fund.” Parishioners are asked to give up one (or more) meals a week, and place the cost of that meal in one of the Fasting Fund baskets. It’s a small and meaningful way to remember Christ’s sacrifice and support a St. Mark’s outreach ministry that serves those in need. This year’s Fasting Fund is dedicated to support children at nearby Caddo Heights Elementary School. Communion Celebration (first communion) for 1st and 2nd graders will be on Sunday, April 10th. The class will be held on Saturday, April 9th in the morning. If you would like your child to be a part of communion celebration then please sign up on website (deadline is Sunday, March 27th).
