KDN No. PP 16900/07/2012(030646)
Project management, engineering and supplementary construction
crew as required for additional work.
The Project Manager, Eric Bubeck says although the charter party
task seems easy enough at a glance, but upon thorough
examination, it became evident this project poses
its own hurdles to cross. Three record
lifts, extremely shallow water depth,
untested working environment in a
new country and a unique mobilisation
are amongst some of the challenges
SASB has to work with.
Eric stresses safe, efficient and prompt
project delivery will not only require the
commitment of everyone involved and
pulling from SASB’s collective experience,
but also creativity and ingenuity in finding
solutions, and steering clear of pitfalls. He
couldn’t be happier with the team that
has been assembled and is confident SASB
will deliver its promises. SapuraAcergy
and Team XXO boleh!

Maintaining
Environmental Safety
We have always been committed to ensuring safety is given the utmost
priority in all our business activities and operations. As you are aware,
we have been breaking new grounds and taking on projects that are
challenging both technically and environmentally. Environments may
change, but safety principles remain. No matter where our projects or
offices are based, we have an obligation to follow the safety principles in
our HSE objectives.
As leaders, I am happy to say our
Project Managers have demonstrated
a high level of commitment to safety
and reinforced these values in their

our employees will prevail and permeate our entire organisation to
establish safety as a hallmark of our organisation. The only way to
safeguard our position as the preferred solutions provider globally is
to deliver our promises promptly, efficiently
and safely to our clients. I would also like to
take this opportunity to thank all of you – it is
because of your dedication we are achieving
what others can only dream about. Let’s keep
moving forward, surpassing our own best
performance and always striving to reach
higher than our present achievements.
Environments may change, but safety principles
remain. No matter where our projects or offices
are based, we have an obligation to follow the

Taking Challenges in Her Stride
Pretty Mariam binti Abdul Aziz feels
working in SASB is like a breath of fresh
air. She grew up in a close knit suburban
community in Taman Sekamat, Kajang. Her
father, a Health, Safety and Environment
(HSE) officer, raised Mariam and her four
siblings to be independent and instilled a
love of nature and adventure in them. A
dreamer with a bubbly personality, she has
been married for three years and still feels
like she is on a honeymoon. She enjoys keeping fit and loves swimming,
snorkelling and plans to get an open water diving certification soon. Her
quiet moments are mostly spent reading chick-lit novels.
A University Utara Malaysia graduate with a Bachelor of Multimedia
(Honours) degree, she has been with SASB for three years now, which is
also her first career. The rich influx of different nationalities working in
SASB is something she looks forward to as she gets to learn about their
different cultures right at her workplace.
Formerly from a secretarial line, Mariam is honoured SASB’s management
has recognised her capabilities and promoted her as a Desk Expeditor.
She will strive to uphold the management’s trust in her by ensuring the
project essentials are expedited promptly according to schedule. She
hopes SASB’s capabilities will continue to attract new projects and this in
turn provide more job opportunities for Malaysian professionals. Mariam
wishes SASB success in every venture it undertakes.
A Warm Welcome to KLOHSE’s

• Implement HSE activities with Management and HSEQ Department’s support by engaging employees in campaigns, inspections and UCUA
programs that create health and safety awareness and ownership.
• Empower the Committee with relevant HSE knowledge and training programmes to manage HSE matters effectively.
We would also like to thank and commend our previous committee for doing an excellent job in awakening health and safety awareness with their
enthusiastic and engaging health and safety programmes. We hope our new committee will continue to support and further strengthen the previous
committee’s efforts to make HSE awareness and accountability an indispensable SASB culture.

Liuhua Project Completion

• Installation of 10.4 km of 18”/22” rigid pipe-in-pipe with S-Lay
method at a water depth of between 260 to 310 metres
• Installation of 2 x in-line 30 tonnes PLET through S-Lay method
• Installation of 2 x mudmat for both LH 4-1 and LH 11-1 PLET
• Survey of LBL array, positioning and as-laid
SASB was awarded the Liuhua (LH) 4-1 Project through a subcontract
by China Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC) in early February
2012 following a fast track negotiation that began in January 2012. The
LH 4-1 Project encompasses the installation and pre-commissioning of
the LH 4-1 pipeline at the project location that is about 215 km from
Hong Kong, in the South China Sea. Due to the project urgency, SASB
worked fastidiously with COOEC and the China National Offshore Oil
Corporation (CNOOC) with the sole objective of mobilising the Sapura
3000 installation vessel in China before the end of March 2012.
• Pre-commissioning
Sapura 3000 was deployed for 113 days in this project that commenced
on the 4th February 2012 and completed on the 7th May 2012. The
actual project work was preceded by one and a half month of project
planning, engineering and preparation, as well as 37 days of continuous
offshore operation works. The one month interval for the mobilisation
and demobilisation from the Johor port to China and back again has been
excluded from this project timeline.
This project brought fresh challenges as this was SASB’s maiden project in
China. Given the short duration for prior preparations, being meticulous
in its operational details and logistic aspects was mandatory for SASB to
ensure the success of Sapura 3000’s operations in China.
Project Execution
CNOOC free-issued permanent items such as 18”/22” pipe-in-pipe,
PLETs, mudmats and WPQT pipes. SASB’s representatives inspected the
line pipes, performed SITs on PLETs and jumpers or vertical connectors
in China, and also collaborated with COOEC and CNOOC to ensure the
structures were fit for purpose prior to offshore installations.
Detailed activities under SASB’s scope of work include the following:
• Installation engineering and procedures
• Fabrication of installation aids inclusive of A & R Heads, Pig Launcher
or Receivers, PLET buoyancy and associated aids for pipe-in-pipe
S-Lay
• Welding procedure and welders’ qualifications
• Mobilisation of Sapura 3000 to China
• Demobilisation of Sapura 3000 back to Malaysia
The Sapura 3000 was mobilised from Johor Bahru on 20th March 2012,
began offshore work on 3rd April 2012 and completed work on 7th May
2012. It was back in Johor Bahru on 17th May 2012 and off-hired from
the project on 18th May 2012.
Challenges and Achievements
The LH 4-1 rigid pipe-in-pipe, PLET initiation and S-Lay laydown
installation project was another first for both SASB and Sapura 3000.
Being a pioneer project in China utilising deepwater technology, the LH
4-1 oil field development drew the attention of Chinese authorities and
was under considerable pressure to deliver its first oil successfully, which
was achieved seamlessly as planned.
Sapura 3000 encountered its toughest challenge with regard to its
S-Lay pipelay capabilities. High pipe tension and high bottom tension
resulting from pipe weight and external loadings such as the unique
Soliton environmental phenomenon in South China Sea necessitates high
utilisation of the DP thruster during pipelay operations.
All in all, SASB’s Liuhua Project team did an admirable job in identifying
potential risks and taking appropriate measures to mitigate any issues
that arose during the various project phases. The project was closed
following client’s confirmation the project deliverables were to the client’s
satisfaction. Great job, team!
