Chicken Boy Gazette chickenboy.com chickenboyshop.com futurestudiogallery.com OCTOBER 2015 • THE STATUE OF LIBERTY OF LOS ANGELES IN HIGHLAND PARK SINCE 2007 Día de los Muertos de Mascotas Remembering our dearly departed companion animals Opening Reception: SATURDAY, OCT. 10, 2015 (7 to 10 pm) It’s NELAArt Second Saturday Gallery Night! On view by appointment to Oct. 30 (Call 323-254-4565) P.S. We are pretty stoked about the imminent resurrection of Hydrox—similar to Oreo cookies (but superior in our opinion). A visionary named Ellia Kassoff is overseeing this exciting venture, with a bakery facility in Vernon! Hydrox debuted in 1908, originally manufactured by Sunshine Biscuits. In 1996, the Keebler Co. bought Sunshine and in 1999 changed the recipe and renamed the cookie Droxies (big mistake, although Hydrox is a pretty weird name for a cookie product). Anyhow, we hope to have some in time for you to sample at the Oct. opening. You know when Hallmark has a special ornament and Walmart has calavera costumes, Día de los Muertos has become a THING. We still like it in its pure form because we believe in remembering the ancestors. So, we will celebrate it in Oct. concentrating on remembrances of our beloved pets. You are invited to bring a picture and perhaps a story about or note to your best friend. We’ll have paper and pencils for you to jot something down and pin to the wall. For real Día de los Muertos is celebrated Oct. 31–Nov. 2. All cultures celebrate the ancestors and their cultures in some way. In fact, in 2008, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) established its Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists! The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity comprises cultural “practices and expressions that help demonstrate the diversity of this heritage and raise awareness about its importance.” The List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding is composed of “those cultural elements that concerned communities and countries consider require urgent measures to keep them alive.” Check out the lists (wikipedia, of course) when you have a few minutes—they are really fascinating... • Shrimp fishing on horseback in Oostduinkerke. Belgium • The technique of leak-proof partitions of Chinese junks • Celebrations of big shoulder-borne processional structures, Italy • The Indigenous Festivity dedicated to the Dead, Mexico • Mongolian knuckle-bone shooting • Turkish coffee culture and tradition • The Space of Gong Culture, Vietnam • Practices and expressions of joking relationships in Niger https://scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/11391355_10153416075062871_8398895912759135565_n.jpg?oh=f92d358dd646f64392a 871b02a1624f7&oe=56845630 FUTURE STUDIO GALLERY 5558 N. FIGUEROA STREET, L.A. 90042 How to Make a Tissue Paper Marigold Bright and colorful MARIGOLDS are the traditional altar flower (ofrenda) of Día de los Muertos. Here’s how to make some oversized ones. Supplies: Orange or gold tissue paper • String, pipe cleaners, or bendy wire • Scissors. Once you know the basics, you can easily tailor your flowers to different materials and sizes. Step 2: Find the middle point of the folded sheets and tie it off—you can use string, pipe cleaners, or bendy wire. Snug and secure but not too tight. Step 3: Use scissors to trim the ends into rounded petal shapes. You won’t be able to trim them all at once, do several petals at a time. Don’t worry about being too precise. Step 1: Our sample was made from 20”x26” tissue sheets. Count out TEN SHEETS and lay flat. The first fold is approx. 1-1/2” (no need to be precise)—take all sheets together and make the first fold across the 20” width. Light crease is sufficient. You will continue to fold accordion-style and end up with an approx. 1-1/2” x 20” length of folded sheets. (You will develop your own way of folding. We flip the sheets over for each fold.) Step 4: Fan out the sheets—super-gently pull each sheet out from the center. Go slowly. It’s tissue paper and delicate; you will no doubt have some rips and tears—no worries, just keep going. When you’ve separated all the sheets into the flower shape, shake it out a bit to fluff it up. You can loop another piece of long string under the center tie and hang the flower like an ornament from a tree or on a wall. We think a tissue marigold also makes a festive and fabulous hat. It’s lightweight and makes a simple and bold fashion statement—icing on the you-cake. String a piece of ribbon through the center tie (or attach a stretchy headband). And honestly, they like totally go with everything! You’ll hear compliments. movetoamend.org We the People, NOT We the Corporations Sign the online petition: https://movetoamend. org/california There’s a monthly meeting, usually held the last Sat.of the month at 1pm: Holy Grounds Coffee & Tea, 5371 Alhambra Ave., El Sereno 90032.
