With no super-star quarterbacks to fret over this year in the NFL draft, such as no Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III, teams have all the time in the world to decide what QB to draft. Some teams who are longing for a good QB need that time. Examples of some of these teams are the Minnesota Vikings, the Cleveland Browns, and the Buffalo Bills. Here are my top five draft choices for QBs of the 2013 NFL draft. 1. Tyler Wilson ! What separates Wilson from the rest of the bunch is a combination of aggressiveness, long bomb accuracy, pocket management, toughness, and the ability to make plays off balance and on the move. Even as the number one QB on my board, heʼs seriously underrated. Although different players, Wilson and Ryan Tannehill would have been a close call to rank in the same class last year. I think Wilson will be a long-term starter, and no worse than a long-term contributor. Wilson finished last season with 249 completions, 401 attempts, 3,387 yards and 21 touchdowns. 2. ! EJ Manuel ! Doug Farrar of Yahoo sports calls EJ Manuel a blank slate, and most agree. Manuelʼs drops, releases and quality of passes are sound and very near NFL good. He has good pocket-making decision-making skills, and he has great arm strength. Physical talent and current skills mean a big upside. I think Manuel could develop into a starter and be a better than average QB. Continued on page 4 1 Kevin Ware’s Injury Won’t Stop Him United, Not So Much by Andy Burris, 4H by Doug Cohen and Eli Moore, 4H During the NCAA tournament Louisville won, but one of their players, Kevin Ware, broke his leg. In the game against Duke, Ware landed awkwardly on his right leg when he went up to block a shot. He broke his tibia in two places, forcing the bone to jut out six inches. [The tibia is one of two large bones between the ankle and the knee.] Ware has a compound fracture which makes his injury as bad as getting hit by a car or even as bad as some injuries suffered in a war. The injury immediately brought comparisons to Redskins’ QB Joe Kevin Ware recently Theismann and his career-ending fracture. tweeted this photo of Even though that happened thirty years himself riding a ago, since it was captured on Monday Night stationary bike with Football, everyone remembers it or has an optimistic seen it. Kevin Ware says that he will never message quoting watch the video of his own injury because it fellow injured would haunt him mentally. basketball star Kobe Instead, Ware is staying positive. Byrant: We don’t quit, Unlike Joe Theismann’s, Ware’s injury we don’t cower, we shouldn’t stop his career. If he can play next don’t run. We endure year, he will be a junior with two seasons of and conquer! eligibility left. The DC United stink. Period. With a 1-6 record, and 4 points they are the worst team in the MLS. Dwayne De Rosario and Chris Pontius, their two best scorers, have a combined zero goals! Let that sink in. In short: Big problem! The team’s top scorer has two goals. And Dwayne De Rosario is tied for fourth with 0 goals! Yeah. Well, hopefully, they’ll pull a Capitals and make the playoffs? Not really. But still, that’s what we said about the Caps. Anyway, keep hoping! Hope that the DC United stop playing like the DC Zombies. Nationals in Slump by Zachary Kaplan, 5JB Have you been watching the Nationals this season? Then, you should know that they have not been living up to their expectations. So many of us thought the Nats would be the almighty team and cream everyone! But there are other disappointing teams. The Angels were supposed be like the Nats, too. I’m not saying that these teams don't have shot, just that something needs to change. The Nats do have some bright spots this season. For one, Bryce Harper has been just demolishing the ball, and for another, the back end of the Nats rotation has been doing very well [Zimmerman and Detwiler]. But after those good things, there’s some bad news. For starters, the Nats 32-home run Hard-hitting Harper is a hitter last season, Adam Laroche, hasn’t been able to hit hardly anything! bright spot in a disappointing season. And one of the faces of the Nat's franchise, Ryan Zimmerman, is injured! Also Nationals ace Stephen Strasburgh is not doing very well. All in all the Nats can definitely go to the fall classic, but it’s going to take a lot of hard work and dedication to get there. (Editor’s Update: As of 5/12 the Nats were hanging in at #2 in their division at 20-17, .541 pct.) 2 Rookies are Rising By Eli Moore, 4H NL Rookies Evan Gattis, Adam Eaton, and Pete Kozma are having amazing seasons. Each looks like he may have a shot at rookie of the year. One reason is because their teams need help. So that’s why they have these guys. For example, the Braves did well but didn’t make the playoffs, and they lost Chipper Jones. The Diamond-backs really needed to pull it together so they acquired many players from free agency, and the Cardinals didn’t make it to the World Series, so they need some players that are able to do that. Evan Gattis Evan Gattis swats a homer. Evan Gattis is really helping out Atlanta, even though he’s the backup for Brian McCann and has only a little time to play before Brian gets healthy. In his limited amount of time, I think he’s going to make something happen. Evan has the arm for a catcher. He’s like a Buster Posey. He can hit; he has an arm, and he can play other positions besides catcher. He just needs more time to show what he’s made of. He has a good chance at rookie of the year. Adam Eaton The Diamond-backs have invested in this guy. Although they projected him to be their everyday centerfielder and leadoff man, Eaton began the season on the disabled list with a left elbow strain he suffered midway through spring training. Back in the lineup now, he starts in center field over veteran Gerardo Parra and he leads them off at bat. He has power; he just doesn’t use "As a rookie, on Opening Day you want to it that often. He is the favorite this year. He reminds me of Bryce be out there contributing but instead Harper. He’s fast; he can hit; he has you're on the disabled list," said Eaton an arm; he plays in center field, and about his late start this year. he’s young. Now all he needs is to grow a beard. If he keeps up the good work, he has a chance at rookie of the year. Pete Kozma Kozma, a great defender, just needs to hit the ball. Pete Kozma played last year with the Cardinals but wasn’t qualified to be a rookie. Now he knows it’s his time to shine. He played extremely well in the playoffs last year and is upset about not succeeding, but it’s a brand new year! He is one of the best NL defenders, but can’t seem to hit the ball this year. He is ready to start all over. He is like Rafael Furcal-- He’s fast; he fields the ball cleanly, and he has an arm. He has a good chance at rookie of the year. 3 The State of the Red Sox Top 5 Picks: ESPN Proucder for Draft Quarterback Choices Contʼd from p. 1 by George Caldwell, 5JB 3. The Red Sox have been doing very well this season. Here are some reasons why: pitchers, sluggers, designated hitter. Pitchers. In my opinion, Clay Buchholz is the Red Sox’ best pitcher. He has the best earned run average (ERA) in the AL, with 1.19. He also leads the AL in wins, with a 5-0 record. If he keeps it up, he will certainly win the Cy Young award. One of the best relievers on the Red Sox is Junichi Tazawa. He is 2-0, and his career record is 5-4. Sluggers. At third base is Will Middlebrooks. He has had six home runs this season, and his bating average is .200. The most home runs he’s had in a season is 23, which he made in 2012. He has a career average of .266. The most home runs he has had in a game this year is three. The second baseman is Dustin Pedroia. He has had three home runs, 19 RBI’s, and a .330 batting average. Pedroia was AL MVP in 2008 when he had 17 home runs, 83 RBIs, and a .326 average. In three years at ASU, Pedroia never hit below .347. If he keeps on playing like this, there can be no argument against him being nominated to the Hall of Fame. Designated Hitter. Despite inflammation in his heels, chronic Achilles soreness, and only weighing a hard to move with, 250 pounds, playing seven games this season, 38-year-old David Ortiz has an incredible 2 home runs, 9 RBI’s and a .519 average! I hate players not having to field, but I think Ortiz will be a silver slugger, maybe MVP, and probably a Hall of Famer. David Ortiz up to bat. As you can see, the Boston Red Sox are very good. I believe they will finish with a 106-56 regular season record; then beat the Washington Nationals, 4-3, in the 2013 World Series. 47 Ryan Nassib is a good decision-maker with a strong pocket presence. Heʼs capable of nice intermediate throws that require huge anticipation. His agility is the best, but he has the arm strength to throw downfield to the anticipated receiver. He also has the physical talent needed to play in the NFL. ! # 4 Sean Renfree ! Last year Renfree tore a pectoral muscle in the final minutes of the last game of his senior year and missed many chances and opportunities. But Renfree has arguably one of the best coaches in college football in Dukeʼs David Cutcliffe, a former coach of Eli and Peyton Manning. Rentree has to do better in pressured situations. Cutcliffe said “He canʼt just throw the ball away in the final minutes of a game. That will get on him some day.” He had 297 completions, 441 attempts, and 3,113 yards. ! Geno Smith throws a touchdown 5. Geno Smith I ! If thereʼs one thing we need to get straight about this guy, itʼs that he is not overrated. Heʼs going to make a great starter for the Jets and may sadly get stuck behind Tim Tebow. That would be upsetting to most people because Tebow has nothing on Smith. Smith is a great player and will be drafted high in the draft. Editors Note: Tim Tebow was recently traded to the Jags. Fun Facts about the Kentucky Derby by Katie Kennedy, 3R The Kentucky Derby is held every year in Louisville, Kentucky. The Derby is only about two minutes long. That’s right. The Kentucky Derby lasts for ONLY two minutes! So, the question is: Why do people from all over the country The Kentucky Derby is one of the world’s most famous go to Kentucky just to see a two-minute horse races. race? Well for one thing, the Kentucky Derby is famous. And for another, it is a tradition. Here are some facts about the famous race. The first race was run in 1875. Every year the Derby is held in Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. In order for a horse to race in the Kentucky Derby, a horse must be older than three. Joel Rosario rode Orb to victory at a muddy Kentucky Derby on May 4. It’s considered bad luck before a race for a jockey or an owner to say that they think they will win. The famous mixed drink, the Mint Julep, has been a Kentucky Derby favorite for over 100 years. The Kentucky Derby is held on the first Saturday of May. The Kentucky Derby’s nickname is ‘Run For The Roses’. In this year’s Kentucky Derby, the jockeys included a woman and a Black man, both who had a shot to win, but a Hispanic jockey won instead. The horse who won the most recent Kentucky Derby was Orb. 5 Division Winning Capitals are Playoff Bound by Ian Barton, 3R To the surprise of many, the Washington Capitals won the Southeast Division and clinched a playoff spot in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This is very unexpected! Not long ago, the Caps were considered the worst team in the NHL due to their terrible record. Here is story of their remarkable “come back” this season. On February 24, 2013, the Capitals sat in LAST place in the entire NHL with an embarrassing record of 4-6-0. Almost no one thought they would make the playoffs. In fact, on national television, one sports commentator publicly humiliated our team Captain, Alexander Ovechkin, by calling his playing “an awful display of hockey” among other things. Perhaps these insulting and offensive remarks inspired the Alexander Ovechkin rips a Caps as they steadily began to improve and started to win more wicked slapshot … and wins games through the month of March. The Caps had a phenomenal the Rocket Trophy! April, losing only two games out of the thirteen that they played. I believe there are several reasons for this incredible turnaround in the Caps season. First, the team is healthier. One of the team’s finest defensemen, Mike Green, is finally healthy. He missed most of last season and much of the first month of this season due to groin/ hernia problems. Since Green has been healthy, he has consistently contributed not just on defense but on offense, scoring and assisting in nearly every game. The Caps are also getting help from their top players such as Mike Ribeiro, Nick Backstrom and Troy Brouwer. However, Alex Ovechkin has been exceptionally good lately. He was named “Player of the Month” by the NHL for April and he captured his third “Rocket” Trophy, awarded to the NHL player who scores the most goals in a season. The team “grinders” (the name given to the players who are on the third and fourth lines) guys like Matt Hendricks, Jason Chimera, and Mathieu Perrault, have also come through for the Caps, scoring goals when they needed. them most. The Capitals have also been outstanding on the power play. They are currently ranked 1st in the NHL in their ability to score goals on the power play. The Caps are successful in scoring goals, a remarkable 26.8% when they are on the power play. If they can improve their penalty kill, they will truly be a team ready for the Stanley Cup Finals. The Capitals begin their run for the Stanley Cup on May 2 when they begin a series against the New York Rangers. Let’s hope they can continue to play well and advance to the next round. Let’s Go Caps!!! Editor’s Note: As we went to press, the Caps were tied 3-3 in their playoff series against the Rangers. NHL Playoff Preview by Gabriel Solomon, 5JL I think that this year’s hockey championship will be between the Pittsburg Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks. They both have had great seasons, breaking records, and it all comes down to multiple series of seven game series. In the Western Conference Chicago leads Minnesota 1-0 in OT in a 2-1 win. Next, the Anaheim Ducks lead the Detroit Red Wings 1-0. The Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller saved .954 percent of the shots. Also the St. Louis Blues lead the defending champions the Los Angeles Kings 1-0 after a 2-1 OT win. The San Jose Sharks lead the Vancouver Canucks 1-0. Editor’s Note: Gabe made his Stanley Cup predictions in April. At deadline, both teams were still in the playoffs. 6 NBA Playoffs by Weston Duncan 4F, Eli Moore 4H, & Evan Vieth, 4C The NBA playoffs have just gotten underway but there have already been two sweeps. In the Eastern conference, the Miami Heat have swept the Bucks, 4-0, and that means that the Miami Heat will play the winner of Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets series winner. The Bulls are winning, 3-1, in the series. The New York Knicks are beating the Boston Celtics, 3-1. The winner of that series will play the winner of Indiana Pacers and the Atlanta Hawks. The Pacers are winning the series, 2-1. In the Western conference, we predict that Oklahoma City will win their series over the Houston Rockets even without one of their key players Russell Westbrook. They will play the winners of the Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Clippers. That series is tied, 2-2. The San Antonio Spurs have already swept the Los Angeles Lakers. The Spurs will either play the Golden State Warriors or the Denver Nuggets. The Warriors are, 3-2. Kevin Durant is tied with Carmelo Anthony for the most points per game in the playoffs with 33.0. Kevin Garnett leads the NBA playoffs with 13.5 rebounds per game. Stephen Curry has 9.6 assists per game. For defense Serge Ibaka leads the NBA playoffs with 3.5 blocks per game. Update at Deadline Round One Eastern Conference Heat Sweeps Bucks Bulls Beat Nets Knicks Beat Celtics Pacers Beat Hawks Western Conference Spurs Sweep Lakers Thunder Beat Rockets Grizzles Beat Clippers Warriors Beat Nuggets *********** Prediction: You Heard It Here! We predict that the LA Clippers are going to beat the New York Knicks in the :inals. We think they are going to win because they have no injuries and they have a really good bench. The Clippers are called Lob City because they have really good dunkers, and they have the dunk of the year by Deandre Jordan. The NBA scoring leader Carmelo Anthony is on the Knicks. They also have the best back court guards with Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd. 7 Round Two Eastern Conference Heat vs. Bulls, 2-1 Pacers vs. Knicks, 2-1 Western Conference Grizzles vs Thunder, 2-1 Spurs vs. Warriors, 2-2 Top 5 Pitchers-So Far Top 5 MLB Batters by Joanna Chait, 3R Alex Metzger 4S I looked for the top 5 batters and decided that they are Chris Davis, Mike Napoli, Miguel Cabrera , Prince Fielder, and Adam Jones. #1 Chris Davis of the Baltimore Yu Darvish was so close to a perfect Orioles is a lefty who has a .337 game, but he just couldn’t get there. batting average. The team recently had a successful time at the East-West Championship meet. The girls’ team returned with the west championship title. The boys were points away from being champions. They ended up with the runners-up title. The team medaled in many events. In the 1600-meter run, Daniel Freymann placed second. He got beat barely in the last lap! Respectively, Lauren Chineme, Abby Gorman, and Ella Pearlman- Chang placed 4th, 5th, and 6th. Again that race was a nail-biter as Lauren got beat in the last 200 meters! Running in the 100-meter dash was Avery Wright in first place. For the boys in the same Avery Runs Her Heart Out event, Abe Jolles, Manley McConkey, and Noah In 100m Dash--Twice! Weitzner won 7th, 8th, and 13th. In the 100-meter hurdles, Allison Pierce and Liza Willsey placed fourth and fifth respectively. Rosalia Inglima also got points for the team, as did Doug Cohen and Alex Metzger. Running for the 400m, Lauren Chineme won it all. Following a little after, Alex Waterman placed third. Jogging in the 800m, Liza Willsey won another medal--the gold--and Alex Waterman took the silver. For the boys in the same event, Daniel Freymann won the silver with his second place finish. Seconds later, Michael Senko placed third. Sprinting their fastest in the 200m, Avery Wright again won gold and Catherine Hammes got points for the team. by Catherine Hammes, 5G Ethan Gadson took second for the boys. On to the relays! In the triple jump, Dylan Blumenthal won first by two feet over the second-place winner. The girls took it all in this event. The entire team and Coach Thurston are working hard for the upcoming Citywide event, and with consistent practice and results like this, they hope to win it all! 11 12 2012-2013 Track Memories The 2012-2013 track season has been a very exciting one!
