Welcome Exhibitors!
On behalf of the Middle Tennessee Arabian Association, we would like to welcome you
to our 30th Annual Music City Shows held at The Tennessee Miller Coliseum in
Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This state-of-the-art facility will make your horse show
experience very enjoyable.
On Thursday while you are picking up your registration packets, I would like to
personally welcome everyone to the show with cake and ice cream. In honor of my
twin’s 2nd birthday (September 18th), please come by the office for a much needed sugar
rush and enjoy the air-conditioned lounge. Also, on Thursday evening Bob Hart Jr. will
be hosting a western pleasure clinic for all the exhibitors and MTAHA members.
On Saturday evening, the MTAHA Drill Team will be performing. Please come and
cheer them on. Another fun part of the evening is the Progressive Barn Party, please plan
on attending. This is a wonderful time to catch up with old friends and make new ones in
the Arabian and dressage community. The winners will be awarded Golden Spatula
Awards.
We would like to thank all of our Sponsors, Volunteers, and the Middle Tennessee State
University Equestrian Team for all their hard work. This show would not be possible
without everyone’s generosity, time and efforts.
Best regards,

30 th Annual Music City Commemorative Pins
So many of our friend’s and family’s lives
have been touched by cancer and
we at MTAHA would like to be a part
of the cure. This year all exhibitors
will receive a commemorative
30 th Annual Music City Horse Show lapel pin.
We will be selling additional pins for $5.00 each.
All proceeds will go to an organization
that our members choose that helps
the fight against cancer.
We hope you buy one to support this worthy cause.

The History of the Music City Arabian Horse Show
The origin of Middle Tennessee’s Music City Arabian Show traces back to the 1930s, when the
Arabian Horse Club of America staged the precursor to Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee.
General J.M. Dickinson of Travelers Rest Arabian Stud was influential in organizing these
early shows, held in conjunction with the Tennessee state fair. A total of fifty-six Arabians
were entered in the 1933 show. While these Nashville Arabian shows proved popular, they did
not persist after 1935. In 1939, there were approximately 1800 registered Arabian horses in the
United States. This number grew to 2621 by 1943, but there were no shows.
The end of World War II had a dramatic effect on horse-ownership in America, as the United
States Remount Service auctioned off its entire herd of horses, including Arabians and halfArabians. The Remount had been cross-breeding horses for Army use and kept complete
records of all breedings. The International Arabian Horse Association (IAHA), founded in
1950, purchased both the Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian Horse Registries from the Remount.
As more people acquired these horses, they desired recreational opportunities to enjoy their
horses. Between 1948 and 1950, membership in local Arabian horse clubs increased from 300
to 750 nationwide. Most of these clubs met monthly, circulated regular newsletters, and held at
least one major show or other riding activity per year. Shows and clubs proliferated in the West
initially. Between 1940 and 1957, the number of Arabian horse owners quadrupled, with
approximately 5000 Arabians.
Despite Tennessee’s rich heritage in the breeding of purebred Arabian horses, the breed was
something of an oddity here even in the 1960s. In East Tennessee, Dr. Sam Harrison helped
organize an Arabian horse club in the late 1960s, serving as president for several years before
he came to focus on Arabian horse racing. Here in Middle Tennessee, there was still no
Arabian horse club by 1970. During the late 1960s, General Dickinson’s daughter, Margaret
Dickinson Fleming (“Ms. Peggy”), traveled to Huntsville, Alabama, to participate in Arabian
horse shows there. She and her daughter Tami took their horse Traveler, who excelled in
Hunter classes.
In 1971, a group of Arabian horse lovers, including Ms. Peggy, gathered for the purpose of
starting a local club in Middle Tennessee. One purpose of the club was to organize a regular
show. Lewis Field of Bellevue was president for several years, before moving to Florida.
During his time as president of the club, Field was instrumental in gaining sponsorships for an
annual show. Ms. Peggy was secretary, and later treasurer of shows. In the early years,
MTAHA held shows at Ellington Agricultural Center. Once a private estate of Rogers
Caldwell, the Ellington facility came under state ownership and proved to be an enjoyable
location for horse shows. The show at some point was moved to Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville,
at which time Janel Maher was president of the club. The first Music City show was held in
1979.
In 1986, MTAHA president was Mary Kelley Mimms (Oakley). Vice President was Ted
Gilbert, Secretary was Lorna Gibbs, and Treasurer was Vicki Bramblett. At the 1986 Music
City Arabian Horse Show, David Boggs of Minnesota and Charles Calvin (“Cal”) Plaxico of
Georgia were judges. Halter and Performance classes were $10 each, while stalls cost $40.00.
Ms. Peggy was show secretary and hunt course designer. There were eight over-fences classes
offered, including Low Hunter at 2’6”, Green & Regular Working Hunter, both at 3’-3’3” and
Jumper at 3’3”-3’6”. There were also halter classes starting at 1986 foals, on up; English
Pleasure; Western Pleasure; and Hunter Pleasure classes, as well as Trail, Ladies Side Saddle,
and Native Costume. Other classes included Pleasure Driving, Park Horse, and Stock Horse.
High Point awards were for Purebred Arabian, Half-Arabian, and Junior Exhibitor.
The10th annual Music City Arabian Horse Show was held in 1989 at Middle Tennessee State
University in Murfreesboro. The show judge was the esteemed Peter Cameron. At the time,
MTAHA President was Jerry Russell, Vice President was Mary Ellen Stevens, Secretary was
Mary Dixon, and Treasurer was Kathy Fann. Performance classes paid out first through fifth
place: $20, $15, $10, $5, and ribbon, as in 1986. High Point awards were for Junior Exhibitor,
Gelding, and Arabian Sport Horse. Among the classes offered, there was still a full session of
Over-Fences classes. Park and Pleasure Driving had been dropped from the class list, but Show
Hack was added, as was a Freestyle Liberty Class.
In 1987, President Jerry Williams started working to raise money for scholarship awards to
students enrolled in the MTSU horse studies program. This initiative was a significant
milestone for the club, which has maintained the scholarship awards annually since 1990.
Funding has varied from year to year, depending on revenue from the Music City Show, the
Fun Show, and donations. In 1988, under President Nancy Burks, the Music City Show was
held at the Livestock Center on campus. The following year, President Donna Haas worked
enthusiastically to gain mass media exposure for the show via TV and radio spots.
MTAHA has benefited from other note-worthy leadership, including Shelly Dunham, President
in 1994, and George Houk, President in 2000 and 2001. By that time, the Music City Show had
returned to Shelbyville, and the increasingly popular Sport Horse classes were added to the
Prize List. In 2001, the weekend following September 11, a moratorium on air travel cancelled
the flights of the scheduled judges, and substitute judges had to be arranged.
Just as classes have been added or dropped, faces have changed within the Board of Directors
and club membership. Serving as President in 2004 was Wayne Buchanan, and in 2005, Frank
Galovic, AHA’s current Treasurer. The Music City Show returned to Murfreesboro in 2006 to
Miller Coliseum, when the President was Darlene Dixon-Bottorff. Countless volunteers have
also had a hand in helping stage the Music City Show over the years. As our show celebrates its
30th anniversary, MTAHA reflects on the evolution of the club and its annual show,
remembering the past and looking forward to many more years of success.
This brief history was written by Andra Kowalczyk Martens, MTAHA member
since 1996. Andra is the author of Tennessee’s Arabian Horse Racing Heritage.
She has researched the historical role of horses in American society, producing a
Master’s thesis, “Horse Race: Class and Gender, American Cultural Identity
Viewed Through Horseracing,” as well as an entry in the online Tennessee
Encyclopedia of History and Culture on the state’s history of purebred horse
breeding. Her book is available from Arcadia Publishing
