The GTBank Orange
Ribbon Initiative
...The Beginning
The Guaranty Trust Bank Orange Ribbon Initiative which commenced in 2009, is an advocacy program designed to support children with
developmental disabilities or special needs in Nigeria especially Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
Autism Spectrum Disorder; as with other developmental challenges arise from insufficient development of a child’s physical, emotional or
intellectual capacity. This Disorder which is largely misunderstood by society makes it difficult for affected children to cope with the everyday
demands of their environment and may lead to varying stages of social stigmatization.
The Orange Ribbon Initiative seeks to;
•
•
•
•
•
•
Ensure societal awareness about ASD.
Reawaken people’s social consciousness about the plight and requirements of children living with ASD.
Stimulate advocacy for the establishment of comprehensive and inclusive schools for affected children as well as integrated
centers for adults.
Sponsor, support and lobby for legislation that protects the rights of people living with developmental disabilities.
Encourage government and private organisations to fund research in Autism.
Re-orientate societal thinking regarding the fallacies concerning Autism Spectrum Disorders.
The Journey So Far
World research statistics shows that ASD is on the rise with an incidence of 1 in 88 children. These reports which also reveal that Nigeria
ranks low in management systems, prompted our Bank to partner with several organizations over the years including Blazing Trails International Center Lewisville, Texas on a variety of initiatives aimed at improving awareness and management of ASD.
In 2012, this partnership brought 12 ASD specialists from the United States of America (USA) to facilitate the largest Autism awareness
seminar in Nigeria and this was viewed through several channels in Nigeria, Ukraine, Kenya, U.S, Sierra Leone, Malaysia, Ghana, Greece and
Iraq “. A cross-section of parents, professionals and care-givers participated in this landmark event.
