MotoGP is go in Brno!
www.bridgestonemotorsport.com 11 CZECH REPUBLIC 16/8/2009 MotoGP is go in Brno! The Czech Republic Grand Prix at the Brno circuit is round 11 of the championship and starts the second half of the MotoGP season after the mid-year break. The grand prix is the 22nd to be held at the track, which has hosted every race since 1987, except in 1992. Tyre talk hard compound rear Bridgestone slicks have been selected. The circuit is the second longest of the season at 5.4 kilometres, but due to the balance between rights and lefts neither edge of the tyres is placed under any particular stress and temperature is maintained throughout the lap. The track’s elevation changes and the mix of positive and negative camber throughout the lap are demanding of both bike setup and the riders. The resurfaced Brno circuit is more abrasive, necessitating hard and extra hard compound front Bridgestone slicks for its fast, fflowing and undulating corners Replacing the original Brno road race, the circuit’s nature is undulating but fairly evenly balanced between right- and left-handed corners thanks to a number of flowing right-left kinks: there are eight right and six left hand corners. It was resurfaced in 2008 and as a result is now more abrasive, necessitating hard and extra hard compound front Bridgestone slicks. By contrast, because of its flowing nature the medium and Brno has been a very successful circuit for Bridgestone in recent years. A Bridgestoneshod rider has taken victory for the last three seasons, twice with the Ducati Team with Loris Capirossi in 2006 and Casey Stoner in 2007, and last season with Valentino Rossi and Fiat Yamaha. What’s more, the top eight riders last season were all on Bridgestone tyres. Tohru Ubukata Bridgestone Motorsport - Manager Motorcycle Race Tyre Development Brno has a long lap but an even balance of left and right-handed corners so we will bring symmetric compound tyres again. Since it was resurfaced in 2008 Brno has become a more abrasive circuit, so we will bring harder front tyres this season. The circuit is characterised by its undulating nature and flowing corners that require a great deal of finesse from the riders. This also places a premium on bike setup so that each rider package can use our tyres to the optimum. Czech Republic - Brno Where to watch... Another World Championship followed in 2008 with Valentino Rossi and Fiat Yamaha, and this season Bridgestone was appointed MotoGP’s official tyre supplier, but how did this ascension come about? One person who has been there from almost the beginning is Tohru Ubukata who joined MotoGP at the end of 2003 after time developing Bridgestone’s Formula One tyres. “Though I once worked on tyre development for the 125cc class, going straight up to MotoGP was a bit of a confusing experience for me” admits the Manager of Motorcycle Race Tyre Development. “I needed to develop tyres for top-class motorcycles without taking any proper steps in the other two-wheel categories. In 2003 and 2004, our rival’s performance was outstanding and it seemed we still had a long way to go with our tyres. The primary weakness of our tyres was a lack of capability to respond to riders’ demands properly. “I used to think that the risks of destroying a motorcycle tyre would be lower due to them being lighter in weight. I also thought that motorcycles would not be under the sort of huge stresses that Formula One cars for example FACT Hard Ex. We started working more and more closely with riders and building trusting relationships with them. Hiroshi Yasukawa, Bridgestone’s Motorsport Director, is emphatic that the team’s honest and open approach was the key to success. “Participants in motor races sometimes go to extreme limits. They can go to the limits only when mutual trust has been established and when they are confident that these tyres are absolutely right. In our motorcycle activities, our staff made great efforts to build up such mutual trust. Bridgestone confronted the problems headon to find the best solution and I believe this is our strength that enables us to go forward.” 42 Pole Positions 122 Podiums (in 66 GPs) 120 Front Row Starts (in 72 GPs) 6342 Championship Points The 2009/2010 MotoGP winter testing calendar has been confirmed with two tests in Sepang and one in Qatar. The Qatar GP is provisionally set to be the opening round of next season. New FIM regulations that govern MotoGP engine durability come into effect from the Czech Republic Grand Prix. The regulations state: “For the 2009 season a maximum of 5 engines may be used by each rider for the final 7 scheduled races of the season, that is from and including the Czech Grand Prix until the end of the season.” Each engine is sealed and marked so that usage can be carefully controlled, much like the system for allocation and control of Bridgestone’s tyres. LCR Honda rider Randy De Puniet broke his left ankle during training two weekends before the Czech Republic Grand Prix. At the time of writing de Puniet’s fitness ahead of round 11 of the championship was in doubt after his motocross accident. “Unfortunately I had a fall and the impact on the ground caused a fracture of the left ankle” he said. “I’m very disappointed but training is very important in order to be in good shape in MotoGP.” 2008 FASTEST LAP Casey Stoner, Ducati Lap 5 - Average speed: 157.199km/h - Time: 1m 57.199s Last year’s race : Brno 2008 2008 Qualifying times Pos Rider Team Source : www.motogp.com 2008 Race results Time Km/h Gap Pos Rider Team Time Km/h Gap 1 Casey Stoner Ducati Team 2m11.657s 284.735 1 Valentino Rossi Fiat Yamaha Team 43m28.84s 164.025 2 Valentino Rossi Fiat Yamaha Team 2m12.846s 283.762 +1.189s 2 Toni Elias Alice Team 43m43.845s 163.087 +15.004s 3 John Hopkins Kawasaki Racing Team 2m12.959s 279.647 +1.302s 3 Loris Capirossi Rizla Suzuki MotoGP 43m50.530s 162.673 +21.689s 4 Chris Vermeulen Rizla Suzuki MotoGP 2m13.002s 275.089 +1.345s 4 Shinya Nakano San Carlo Honda Gresini 43m54.700s 162.416 +25.859s 5 Alex de Angelis San Carlo Honda Gresini 2m13.352s 271.561 +1.695s 5 Anthony West Kawasaki Racing Team 43m58.306s 162.194 +29.465s 6 Anthony West Kawasaki Racing Team 2m14.064s 278.135 +2.407s 6 Chris Vermeulen Rizla Suzuki MotoGP 43m59.449s 162.123 +30.608s 7 Randy de Puniet LCR Honda MotoGP 2m14.535s 265.356 +2.878s 7 Marco Melandri Ducati Team 44m05.294s 161.765 +36.453s 8 Shinya Nakano San Carlo Honda Gresini 2m14.718s 277.349 +3.061s 8 Alex de Angelis San Carlo Honda Gresini 44m05.591s 161.747 +36.750s 9 Loris Capirossi Rizla Suzuki MotoGP 2m14.805s 276.003 +3.148s 9 Andrea Dovizioso JiR Team Scot MotoGP 44m07.663s 161.620 +38.822s 10 Sylvain Guintoli Alice Team 2m14.861s 276.710 +3.204s 10 Jorge Lorenzo Fiat Yamaha Team 44m08.414s 161.575 +39.573s 11 Marco Melandri Ducati Team 2m15.880s 278.422 +4.223s 11 John Hopkins Kawasaki Racing Team 44m08.451s 161.572 +39.610s 12 Dani Pedrosa Repsol Honda Team 2m16.032s 271.288 +4.375s 12 Sylvain Guintoli Alice Team 44m09.733s 161.494 +40.892s 13 Toni Elias Alice Team 2m16.510s 272.589 +4.853s 13 James Toseland Tech 3 Yamaha 44m40.331s 159.651 +1m11.490s 14 Andrea Dovizioso JiR Team Scot MotoGP 2m17.632s 264.511 +5.975s 14 Colin Edwards Tech 3 Yamaha 44m49.974s 159.078 +1m21.133s 15 Colin Edwards Tech 3 Yamaha 2m20.074s 257.204 +8.417s 15 Dani Pedrosa Repsol Honda Team 45m05.879s 158.143 +1m37.038s 16 James Toseland Tech 3 Yamaha Out of time limit 16 Randy de Puniet LCR Honda MotoGP 45m07.248s 158.063 +1m38.407s 17 Jorge Lorenzo Fiat Yamaha Team Out of time limit NC Casey Stoner Ducati Team 11m49.228s 16 Laps Bridgestone Motorsport Round-Up F1 The next race on the Formula One calendar will be held at Valencia on 23rd August.
