MotoGP is go in Brno!
The Czech Republic Grand Prix at the Brno
circuit is round 11 of the championship and
starts the second half of the MotoGP season
after the mid-year break. The grand prix is
the 22nd to be held at the track, which has
hosted every race since 1987, except in 1992.
Tyre talk
hard compound rear Bridgestone slicks have
been selected.
The circuit is the second longest of the
season at 5.4 kilometres, but due to the balance
between rights and lefts neither edge of the
tyres is placed under any particular stress and
temperature is maintained throughout the lap.
The track’s elevation changes and the mix of
positive and negative camber throughout the lap
are demanding of both bike setup and the riders.
The resurfaced Brno circuit is more
abrasive, necessitating hard and extra
hard compound front Bridgestone
slicks for its fast, fflowing and
undulating corners
Replacing the original Brno road race, the
circuit’s nature is undulating but fairly evenly
balanced between right- and left-handed corners
thanks to a number of flowing right-left kinks:
there are eight right and six left hand corners. It
was resurfaced in 2008 and as a result is now
more abrasive, necessitating hard and extra hard
compound front Bridgestone slicks. By contrast,
because of its flowing nature the medium and
Brno has been a very successful circuit for
Bridgestone in recent years. A Bridgestoneshod rider has taken victory for the last three
seasons, twice with the Ducati Team with Loris
Capirossi in 2006 and Casey Stoner in 2007,
and last season with Valentino Rossi and Fiat
Yamaha. What’s more, the top eight riders last
season were all on Bridgestone tyres.
Tohru Ubukata
Bridgestone Motorsport - Manager
Motorcycle Race Tyre Development
Brno has a long lap but an even balance
of left and right-handed corners so we will
bring symmetric compound tyres again. Since
it was resurfaced in 2008 Brno has become
a more abrasive circuit, so we will bring
harder front tyres this season. The circuit
is characterised by its undulating nature
and flowing corners
that require a great
deal of finesse from the
riders. This also places
a premium on bike setup
so that each rider
package can use
our tyres to the
optimum.

Reaching the top
It took just six years for Bridgestone to climb
from MotoGP newcomer to World Champion
in 2007 with Casey Stoner and the Ducati
Team. Another World Championship followed
in 2008 with Valentino Rossi and Fiat Yamaha,
and this season Bridgestone was appointed
MotoGP’s official tyre supplier, but how did
this ascension come about?
One person who has been there from almost
the beginning is Tohru Ubukata who joined
MotoGP at the end of 2003 after time developing
Bridgestone’s Formula One tyres. “Though I
once worked on tyre development for the 125cc
class, going straight up to MotoGP was a bit
of a confusing experience for me” admits the
Manager of Motorcycle Race Tyre Development.
“I needed to develop tyres for top-class
motorcycles without taking any proper steps
in the other two-wheel categories. In 2003 and
2004, our rival’s performance was outstanding
and it seemed we still had a long way to go with
our tyres. The primary weakness of our tyres
was a lack of capability to respond to riders’
demands properly.
“I used to think that the risks of destroying
a motorcycle tyre would be lower due to them
being lighter in weight. I also thought that
motorcycles would not be under the sort of huge
stresses that Formula One cars for example

would go through but I found out I was wrong.
“Our development team started to brainstorm
ideas on how to change the characteristics
required from our tyres, and realised those
ideas. We started working more and more
closely with riders and building trusting
relationships with them.
Hiroshi Yasukawa, Bridgestone’s Motorsport
Director, is emphatic that the team’s honest and
open approach was the key to success.
“Participants in motor races sometimes go
to extreme limits. They can go to the limits only
when mutual trust has been established and
when they are confident that these tyres are
absolutely right. In our motorcycle activities, our
staff made great efforts to build up such mutual
trust. Bridgestone confronted the problems headon to find the best solution and I believe this is
our strength that enables us to go forward.”
42 Pole Positions
122 Podiums (in 66 GPs)
120 Front Row Starts (in 72 GPs)

The 2009/2010 MotoGP winter testing calendar has been confirmed with two tests in Sepang and one in Qatar. The Qatar GP is
provisionally set to be the opening round of next season.
Eleven races were held on

until 1977, meaning that the
city has hosted 32 premier

Rizla Racing Day a success
New regulations imposed
Broken ankle for de Puniet
The 10th Rizla Racing Day took place
on Sunday 9th August at the Assen
circuit with both riders putting on
a good show for fans. “It is a great
opportunity for a lot of the fans who
wouldn’t normally get to a MotoGP to
see, hear and appreciate our GP bike”
said Chris Vermeulen. “To see the
mixture of cars, bikes and karts all at
one event was really different and Rizla
certainly puts on a good show” echoed
Loris Capirossi.
New FIM regulations that govern MotoGP
engine durability come into effect from the
Czech Republic Grand Prix. The regulations
state: “For the 2009 season a maximum
of 5 engines may be used by each rider for
the final 7 scheduled races of the season,
that is from and including the Czech Grand
Prix until the end of the season.” Each
engine is sealed and marked so that usage
can be carefully controlled, much like
the system for allocation and control of
Bridgestone’s tyres.
LCR Honda rider Randy De Puniet
broke his left ankle during training two
weekends before the Czech Republic
Grand Prix. At the time of writing de
Puniet’s fitness ahead of round 11 of
the championship was in doubt after
his motocross accident. “Unfortunately
I had a fall and the impact on the
ground caused a fracture of the left
ankle” he said. “I’m very disappointed
but training is very important in order to
be in good shape in MotoGP.”
