parents may not have time
to bring their children to the
library every week. The online
option keeps the reading
momentum going. While
they’re on our website tracking
their progress, families can
download free ebooks and
museum passes too,” said

Solano County Library’s annual
summer reading program is
different this year. This year’s
program is a challenge, in
which everyone from children
to adults can read and win
prizes. Starting June 1 and
ending August 31, the library
will be counting the books
read by the community in
order to reach a goal of
100,000 books – one book
read for each family in Solano
County. “Reading is important
to be successful in life, but
even more significant, it’s fun.
The summer is a great time for
everyone to relax, pick up a
book and read for enjoyment.
Children who see their parents
reading are more likely to
become readers themselves,”
said Bonnie Katz, Solano
County’s director of library
services.

Adult Literacy Goes to Jail
Stay and Play
“I’ve had a fun time with my coworkers, saying “See you later.
I’m off to jail,” said Anika Johnson, a program assistant for the
Library’s Adult Literacy Program. Johnson has been working
toward a long-held goal for Solano County Library, to provide
adult literacy services to jail inmates. By collaborating with Five
Keys, a charter school within the jail and the County’s Sheriff’s
Department, Johnson was able to identify students that were
reading below the 5th grade level and who were invested in
improving their reading and writing skills.
For children, playing and learning go hand in hand at Solano
County Library. In partnership with First 5 Solano, the Library
has created early learning spaces that include imaginative
play, art and science activities at two branches. Children who
visit the John F. Kennedy Library in Vallejo and the Fairfield
Cordelia Library will enjoy
fun, hands-on activities
designed to enhance early
literacy skills while they
play. Families can visit
these spaces during open
library hours.
Enter Ernie Francisco, recently
retired from the California Medical Facility, the state’s medical
correctional facility and a former
tutor with the Library’s adult
literacy program. Hired by the
Sheriff’s Office to coordinate jail
tutors, Francisco helped Johnson
navigate the ins and outs of corrections culture- background
checks, lockdowns, and safety precautions.
George Silverio is the first tutor to be trained and to complete
the background check process. He started meeting with his
student in February. “She was polite and well mannered, I felt
safe and secure knowing there were officers right around the
corner and in earshot. ” A highlight for Silverio is seeing his
student come prepared and enthusiastic to share her
completed assignments.
Johnson sees parallels between the social problems of
incarceration and illiteracy. “Recidivism is a cycle, just like
illiteracy. Adults try to better their lives, some fail and get
discouraged and fall back into obstructive coping skills. It can
be generational, just like illiteracy. The inmates are just like
any other student in our program. They are looking for a second
chance to improve their lives.” Tutors are needed in the jail and
the library. Call Literacy Services at (707) 784-1526 to help.

Facilitating the program will
be librarian Tim Madigan.
“I taught ESL in Korea, Mexico
and Saudi Arabia before I
settled down and became a
librarian, so this is something
that I am very excited to be
doing,” said Madigan. Madigan
leads a similar program on
Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the
Fairfield Cordelia Library, where
he is the supervising librarian. For more information call
