THE ORDER FOR WORSHIP
4th Sunday in Lent
March 6, 2016
Preparation for Worship
“…that is our vocation: to create the free and fearless space where
brotherhood and sisterhood can be formed and fully experienced…When hostility is
converted into hospitality then fearful strangers can become guests revealing to
their hosts the promise they are carrying with them. Then in fact the distinction
between host and guest proves to be artificial and evaporates in the recognition of
the new found unity.”
-Henri J.M. Nouwen

Welcome and News of Congregational Life
Visitors and members are asked to sign the white Welcome Card in the red folder,
including address and phone number, and pass it back to the center aisle.
You may fill out a yellow card with your prayer requests and place it in the collection
plate during the Offering. The prayer requests will be included in the Prayers of the
People later in the service.
Sounding of the Shofar
Introit
Chai Hoon Park
O come unto the Lord; O come back to the Lord.
No matter how heavy and how great your sins may be,
there are no sins that Christ our Savior cannot bear, cannot accept.
The great depth of Jesus’ loving heart is far deeper than the seas.
-Young taik Chun, translated Steve S. Shim

Call to Worship
Our God is a host who welcomes us.
Thanks be to God.
Our God is a father who forgives us.
Thanks be to God.
Our God is a mother who nourishes us.
Thanks be to God.
Come, let us receive welcome and forgiveness.
Come, let us worship the God of life.
*Hymn
GOD, YOU SPIN THE WHIRLING PLANETS
God, you spin the whirling planets,
fill the seas and spread the plain,
mold the mountains, fashion blossoms,
call forth sunshine, wind, and rain.
We, created in your image,
would a true reflection be
of your justice, grace, and mercy
and the truth that makes us free.
You have called us to be faithful
in our life and ministry.
We respond in grateful worship
joined in one community.
When we blur your gracious image,
focus us and make us whole.
Healed and strengthened as your people,
we move onward toward your goal.
God, your word is still creating,
calling us to life made new.
Now reveal to us fresh vistas
where there's work to dare and do.
Keep us clear of all distortion.
Polish us with loving care.
Thus, new creatures in your image,
we'll proclaim Christ everywhere.

Call to Confession
Prayer of Confession
Generous God, you love us unconditionally,
forgiving us again and again.
Some of us take this gift for granted,
spurning your Way and your Word.
Others of us reject your grace,
hiding in shadows of fear and shame.
Insistent God, run to us today,
welcoming us home,
inviting us to your feast of life,
and transforming us into ambassadors of reconciliation
for the sake of your world.
We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
Assurance of Pardon
As the assurance of pardon is proclaimed, water will be poured into the font as
a reminder that it is through the waters of baptism that God’s boundless grace
is offered to us. The assurance will end with the words:
Friends, hear and believe the good news of the gospel.
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!

A Sacred Space for Children
Barbra Bowyer
As the music begins and the congregation sings, the children are invited to
come forward for Sacred Space.
Children’s Processional #462
I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story, because I know 'tis true;
it satisfies my longings as nothing else could do.
Hankey
The boys and girls will collect food in the grocery cart for the Good Ground
Pantry just before they leave the sanctuary. Children younger than
kindergarten are invited to go to the Activity Room after Sacred Space.
Children in kindergarten through third grade are invited to go with Mrs. Donald
to the Music Room for a music class. Following an enrichment time in the
Activity Room, the children will return to the sanctuary for communion.
Children’s Recessional
I love to tell the story; 'twill be my theme in glory
to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.
Hankey
Luke 15:1-3; 11b-32
The Good News of the Gospel
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Anthem
OUT OF THE DEEP
John Rutter
Out of the deep have I called unto Thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice.
O let Thine ears consider well the voice of my complaint.
If Thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss:
O Lord, who may abide it?
For there is mercy with Thee: therefore shalt Thou be feared.
I look for the Lord: my soul doth wait for Him, and in His word is my trust.
My soul fleeeth unto the Lord, before the morning watch, I say,
before the morning watch.
4
O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy:
and with Him is plenteous redemption.
And He shall redeem Israel from all his sins.
Out of the deep have I called unto Thee,
O Lord: Lord, hear my voice.

GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD
John Stainer
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
That who so believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For God sent not His son into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world through Him might be saved.
-John 3:16-17

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen

Musical Moments
We welcome cellist Alvin McCall to our service this morning. Mr. McCall is a
member of the St. Louis Symphony and appears on this season’s Music Moments
Series. This series, made possible by anon., celebrates the refurbished Schantz
Organ.
Girl Scout Sunday
Today we celebrate Girl Scout Sunday and welcome members of Troop 652 as part
of our worship leadership. We are grateful to Barbara Bowyer and Claudia Wall for
serving as troop leaders. The girls will be selling Girl Scout cookies in Niccolls Hall
following the worship service.
Sounding of the Shofar
A shofar is an instrument made from the horn of a ram. It
was used in ancient Israel to announce the New Moon
(Rosh Chodesh) and call people together. It was also
blown on Rosh Hashanah, marking the beginning of the
New Year, signifying the need to wake up to the call to
repentance.
The shofar is hollow--allowing sound produced by human
breath, which God breathes into human beings, to move
through it. This pure, and natural sound, symbolizes the
life God calls us to lead. The curve in the horn mirrors the
contrition of the one who repents. The bend in the
shofar represents the way a human heart, in true
repentance, bends before the Lord.
Easter Vigil
Sign-up has begun for the Easter Prayer Vigil which begins after the Good Friday
Tenebrae Service and extends until Easter morning. If you would like to
participate, please contact the church office.

Wednesday Soup Suppers and Study in Lent
THE PASSION AND PROMISE OF JESUS – WALKING
TOWARD THE CROSS
March 9 and 16
5:30pm-6:15pm -- Supper
6:15pm-7:15pm -- Prayer, Singing and Study
Second Church Dining Room
As part of our Lenten Journey, we will gather on Wednesday evenings for a simple
soup supper, followed by prayer, singing and study.
The Congregational Care Mission Team will provide the soup, salad, bread, fruit,
and beverage.
Andy Peters will provide a brief musical opening to the program.
Susan Andrews will facilitate the study based on the book The Last Week: A Day
by Day Account of Jesus’s Final Week in Jerusalem by Marcus J. Borg and John
Dominic Crossan, lively, relevant scholars who are relatively easy to understand.
The biblical stories of each day of Holy Week are looked at through a progressive,
cultural lens – and each of us will be asked to imagine what Jesus was thinking and
feeling. These will be conversations – not lectures. You may purchase the book
from Amazon.
Please read Chapters 6 and 7 for the March 9th conversation, which will be led by
Susan Andrews.
A free-will offering will be taken to offset the costs of the supper ingredients. Any
additional offerings will be donated to One Great Hour of Sharing.
Please consider joining us for this opportunity for sharing, learning and
community gathering. All 2PC members and visitors are welcome.
This event is sponsored by your
Congregational Care Mission Team

Be Holy – Lenten Devotional
Lent is a holy journey with God, but what does it mean exactly to be “holy?” In Be
Holy, pastor and author Brian Coulter has penned a series of brief daily reflections,
paired with a short, ancient form of praise and petition called a breath prayer, to
explore what holiness means for Christians today. He invites us to receive from
11
God this blessed gift that makes our lives more compelling, more enjoyable, and
more faithful. Bess Reynolds’ original artwork brings this holy Lenten journey to
life. Be Holy provides a Scripture reading, meditation, and prayer for each day of
Lent. Copies of Be Holy are in the Narthex, Memorial Hall and Niccolls Hall.
Joys and Concerns
If you have joys or concerns for the bulletin, please e-mail them to
[email protected]. Please make sure that you have permission from those
you list.
E-Scrip
As you shop for groceries, please remember to use
your Schnucks e-Scrip cards. If you don’t have one,
the cards are in the spaces outside the sanctuary and
in Niccolls Hall. This costs you nothing. If you need
help activating your card, contact our accountant,
Nicole McRae. Every time you purchase something at
Schnucks, have your eScrip card scanned, and 2PC
receives a percentage of the sale for our outreach programs.
