President’s Message
As the year winds to a close, I have the opportunity to write one last VIEW
article. It has been an interesting year at Wayzata Country Club full of challenges
and excitement. We had some crazy weather early in the golf season and near
perfect playing conditions late. We had a severe storm and power outage… all
during a member’s daughters wedding! (They made the most of it and had a
great day. CONGRATS!) We lost an air conditioner due to lightning and many
trees plus a fence due to a wicked wind storm. Our swim and dive teams both
won championships (AGAIN). And, sadly, we lost some wonderful members and
a legend in Homer who will be greatly missed!! As President, I have had a front
row seat to all of this, and I must say after a year in this role, I have never been
more proud of our membership. During all the up and downs, our members
have been supportive. We have wonderful people at WCC that make the time
we spend on these wonderful grounds 12 months of pure joy!
Bob Griffin
Club President
Wayzata Country Club
Mission Statement
Wayzata Country Club shall be a
premier, family-oriented private
country club providing the
Members and their guests with
championship golf, excellent dining,
a variety of year-round recreational
activities and opportunities for
quality social interaction.
I need to start by saying thank you to so many people but none more than our
General Manager Mr. Chris Gerardi. Over the last few years, Chris and I have
talked by phone almost every day and on every occasion he has been smart,
humble, efficient, funny, open, and driven. He and I have developed a great
working relationship and friendship. We would often “spit ball” ideas back and
forth and he never took credit for any of them even though most of the time
he thought of the good ones. Not a day goes by that he isn’t thinking about
increasing member satisfaction, taking care of his employees, or WCC. He is
a great GM who works incredibly hard and long hours and I feel lucky to have
been able to work with him so closely.

I also need to thank the Board and WCC staff members. THANK YOU to all the
WCC Board Members and to the dedicated Executive Committee. Your collective
tireless dedication to WCC and many hours of meetings are testament to the
type of members that serve at WCC. Thank you to Dick and Jesse who have
shown me the utmost courtesy for many years but particularly this year. To the
unsung heroes: Marget, Katherine, Chef Colin, Jay, Leah, Nicky, Adam, John,
Max, Courtney, Jane, Mary, Bonnie, Brian, Shelly, Megan, Jeremy, Rachel, Rich,
John, Lee, Jeanne, the valet gang, and every bartender that ever poured me
a Guinness! To all the staff members at WCC, you have made me feel special
and helped in so many ways to make WCC great and I thank you very much.
Now, to these members, I wanted to give you a shout out for giving me the
encouragement and support, at times needed and not, that makes being
President of WCC so special: Roomie, TJ, The Hublers, anyone with the last
name Gilster, Ted, (Ian, Cortney, Ben, Pete, Mike M, Mike S, George W… aka
The Ex-Presidents), Mr. Erickson, Mr. Stranghoener… aka Mr. Yag, team SVEDKA,
the guys that play floor hockey, Mr. Hadley, Mollie & Holly, Mr. Platt, and so
many others. You will never know what those little words of encouragement,
advice, gentle criticisms, and support mean to someone just trying to do the
best they can do for a year. Well, to me, it has meant the world and I appreciate
you all very much.
Members may review the minutes of
the Board of Directors during normal
business hours in the offices of the Club
by contacting Chris Gerardi. Please be
advised that Members are to maintain
in confidence all matters stated in the
minutes.
As far as policy and governance goes, this year was transformative in many
ways. Since the recession of 2008-2009, it has been challenging at WCC with
difficultly garnering new members, debt, changing demographics, sister club
competition, etc. 2013 began with the challenge of an inconsistent economy
and how it would impact these issues. Could we improve upon these issues
while improving member satisfaction and growing membership levels? With
a lot of hard work that began in earnest the year prior, some answers came

to fruition in 2013…namely, these great programs and changes to WCC:
our debt was restructured to manageable levels, a new flexible food
minimum program for all members was launched along with a pre-paid
annual dues program, new golf carts were purchased for 2014, a credit
card machine was installed in the Pro Shop for members and guests,
a new membership class was established (the Bowman), a renewed
effort to improve our menu and food service, multiple focus groups and
increased member feedback, many new events that span all 12 months
of the year, lower guest fees midway through the season, more events
that celebrate our tenured members, governance updates, and so much
more… All of this making our Mission Statement more than words on a
page, but a living, breathing road map of how the Club will be run and
enjoyed by our members.
As we often hear from outgoing Presidents, “is the place in better shape
than it was when I took office?”. I can confidently say that, due to the
efforts of the collective individuals listed above (Board and staff) and you
the membership, Wayzata Country Club is in great shape right now, and
the future could not be brighter. I will still be on the Executive Committee
as Past President and sit on the Board in 2014, but I can state without
hesitation that my decision to serve Wayzata Country Club for the last 10+
years has been one of the best decisions of my life, and I would strongly
encourage you to follow in my footsteps if given the chance. Wayzata is
a GREAT country club and its members are truly the best!
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as your President, it
has been an honor.
Take care, Bob Griffin

Generally speaking
As this is my last View article before the calendar turns to 2014 (Is that
Possible?!), I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families
a wonderful Thanksgiving and a safe and happy holiday season. I look forward
to seeing you at the Club often in the upcoming months as we open our 4th
season of Winter Wonderland and have many new and exciting dining and
social events for you to enjoy.

The end of our fiscal year coming up on November 30th also means the end
of the term for some of the Club Officers. I would like to thank our outgoing
President Mr. Bob Griffin for all he has done for the Club and the support he has
given me during the past year. He will remain on the Executive Committee as
the Past President. I would also like to congratulate Mr. Joe Kinning, our current
Vice-President, who will be taking over as President effective December 1. I
look forward to working with him during the upcoming year. Congratulations
as well to our current Membership Committee Chair and Executive Committee
Member Mr. Jim Freytag who will be taking over as Club Vice-President on
December 1. Mr. Jay Kernan will continue on as the Club Treasurer and many
thanks to him for his support and financial stewardship over the last year. Mr.
George Sutton will remain as Club Secretary, and I sincerely appreciate all of the
support Mr. Sutton has provided to both me and the Club as a whole. Special
thanks also to Mrs. Holly Pihl who will be leaving the Board at the end of the
year. Mrs. Pihl has done a wonderful job leading the House and Decorating
Committees, and she in large part is responsible for the wonderful renovations
in the entryway, Ballroom, Bowman and Garden Room. Finally, a special thanks
to Mr. Mike Maglich, who will be leaving the Executive Committee at the end of
November. Mr. Maglich has served the Club well for many years as a Committee
Member, Board Member, Membership Committee Chair, Grounds Committee
Chair, Vice-President, and President. I greatly appreciate everything he has
done for the Club and for me personally.
I’m going to offer a little personal touch as we approach Thanksgiving and offer
up the things in my life I am thankful for…
• I’m thankful for my wonderful family that provides me with much needed
balance in my life. My wife of almost 17 years, Diane, along with my 10 yearold daughter Holly and 6 year-old son Jack are the lights of my life.
• I’m thankful for a wonderful sister and brother, who in spite of geographical
challenges are still very close to me.
• I’m thankful for having had a wonderful mother. Even though it was only for
29 years, everything I have that is good I got from her.
• I could go on and on…Finally, I’m thankful for having such a wonderful place to
work that allows me to take good care of my family. I’m thankful and fortunate
to work alongside a terrific staff every day. And you, the membership, are a
wonderful group of people that I can say without hesitation are the best I have
ever had the pleasure to serve.
My goal this year, as it has been every year, is to make sure the people in my
life I am thankful for know that every day-not just on Thanksgiving.
So thank you for allowing me to serve as your General Manager, it is indeed a
privilege that I am very thankful for.
Respectfully, Chris Gerardi

Garden Inspirations
The winter season is slowly creeping up on us. Soon we will be dashing through
the snow and decking the halls. Join us for some winter classes to get you
excited for the holiday season. We are offering two opportunities again this
year to perk up your entryway.
The first is our ever popular Build Your Own Holiday Container Class on Saturday,
November 16th or Sunday, November 17th. This class includes materials for two
15” compostable pots. These pots look great alone or easily fit into an existing
planter. Materials include holiday greens such as spruce tips, pine boughs,
assorted cedar cuttings, and other evergreen materials. Additional materials to
add interest and color include ribbon, dogwood, curly willow, eucalyptus, and
much more. There are unlimited possibilities and combinations. This event
is held down in our barn. (Class sizes are limited so sign up early!) I will be
available with ideas and guidance.

The second is our Wine and Wreaths event. This was such a popular event last
season we decided to bring it back. Join us for an evening of wine &
winter cheer. This event will be held Thursday, November 21st in the Bowman
room. We will be decorating a 25” balsam wreath with all the trimmings. I will
be available to give you tips on bow making and how to create a great focal point
for your door. A wide variety of materials will be available including ribbon,
ornaments, and additional greens.

The Living Room can hold anywhere from 5-30 people. This space is ideal for
small private dinners and cocktail parties. The space is very versatile and can
be set up as a lounge with furniture groupings and high tops or a more formal
setting with a large long table for a private wine dinner (as pictured above).
Each private room comes with your own serving staff and you can customize
you entire food and beverage needs. The Living Room is also perfect for small
business meetings, baby and bridal showers and smaller holiday gatherings.

In Memoriam:
It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you of the passing
of Mrs. Charlene Cusick. Mrs. Cusick and her husband Tom
have been members since 1985, and together they have made
many wonderful memories and developed countless lifelong
friendships at WCC. Mrs. Cusick was a wonderful, kind woman
who always had a smile on her face, and made time to say hello
and ask how you were doing. She will be deeply missed by all
of us. Our most sincere condolences go out to Mr. Cusick and
the entire family.

Let’s Go Golfing
It’s been a very strange golf season. We had the latest opening day ever, April
29th. Then May wasn’t any good. An OK June, then July, August, September
were terrific. I’m referring to weather and consequently, rounds of golf played.
Currently, October has had about six good days in the first half of the month.
It all adds up to the fewest rounds of golf played during a golf season here
at WCC in the last twenty years. We are not done yet, but it’s looking like
close to 18,000 rounds will have been played here this summer. This total is
approximately 2,000 rounds less than last year.

The second half of our summer was terrific. We had a lot of great golf played
towards the end of the season. Our Senior City League team finished second
in their league. David Brown was medalist in the last event of the season at
Woodhill CC. David shot 74. Other contributors throughout the season were
Ben Smith, Jay Kernan, George Webster, Tom Philbin, Mark Platt, Jim Driscoll,
Jerry Clark, John McCune, Roger Rovick and Mike Cashman. Next year, we
hope to do even better.
Our season long Match Play competitions came to conclusions in October.
Cortney LeNeave edged out Norm Hageboeck in the Singles Match Play 2&1.
Semi finalists were Jason Korstange, who lost to Cortney and Larry Stranghoener,
who lost to Norm.
In the two man Best Ball event finals, Jon Miller and Jim
Robin edged Tom Philbin and Tom Kane in a hard fought
match, 2&1. Semi finalists were Mark Platt & Cortney
LeNeave and Chris Doucet & Ken Heimbach.
We also had our Wayzata Cup Final Shootout on Saturday,
October 5th. We had 11 golfers. These finalists were
the top point leaders from 2013. Players acquire points
by participating in our major events and placing high in
those events. Shootouts are always exciting. Anything
can happen it’s very interesting how they turn out. This
one was no exception. Cortney LeNeave finished first.
He birdied the 9th hole to edge out Mark Capece. Mike
Coffey finished third. Tom Philbin finished 4th and Ben
Smith was 5th. I want to thank all the participants in
8 | Nov/Dec 2013 | The View
our events this year. Playing in events is one of the best
ways to meet your fellow members and also to get those
competitive juices flowing.
We keep track of our Most Improved Golfers through our
handicap system. The 9-Hole Women’s Most Improved
player this season was Deborah Medeiros who improved
her handicap by 4 index points. Connie McCune was the
18-Hole Women’s Most Improved player. She improved
her index 5.4 points. Our Most Improved men’s golfer
was Jerry Gray. Jerry started the season with an index of
9.0. He ended the season with a 4.9 index. He improved
4.1 strokes. Congrats to everyone who lowered their
handicaps this season.
Max Addler and I took a group of WCC members to
Northern Ireland in late September. We had a wonderful
time. We played Royal County Down twice, The European
Club, County Louth, Ballyliffin, Royal Portrush, and
Ardglass. Participants were Bob Griffin, Tom Price, Jay
Kernan, Tom Kane, Pete Eckerline, Tom Philbin, Jim Bye,
Jerry Clark, Kent Carlson, Mike Mulligan, David Greenblat,
George Sutton, Mark Platt and Randy Zanatta. We had a
little bit of every kind of Irish weather. We had rain for
only 9 holes out of 6 days of golf. We had 3 or 4 blustery
days and we had a couple of delightful sunny days with just
a light breeze. We’ve taken a number of these trips and
they are always so much fun. I often talk to people about
going over to Ireland and Scotland on a golf trip and they
say they are going to do that some day. I give credit to the
guys that went with Max and I. They didn’t wait and now
they want to go again. We will put another trip together
and I hope you will go with us.
On that note, we are planning a winter flyaway February
7th – February 10th to Hammock Beach, Florida. It will
be a perfect time to shake those winter blues and play
some golf with your fellow members. We will go down
Friday, Feb. 7, play 18 holes Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
play Monday morning and fly back home. Let me know if
you have any interest.
Brady Engen was awarded the Holiday PGA Apprentice
Scholarship. The scholarship is for $500 and goes towards
Brady’s education expenses as he goes through the steps
to be a class ‘A’ PGA Professional. Brady was awarded
the scholarship at the fall meeting of the Minnesota PGA.
We hope you will use the Golf Shop at WCC for your holiday
shopping. We are here to serve you. Please come visit us and
let us help you with gift giving. Have a great Holiday Season!

Winter Wonderland
As the leaves change colors and the morning air gains that crisp feel, our
thoughts turn towards winter. Walking the snowshoe trails on a quiet winter
evening while large white flakes fall softly all around. The anticipation you
feel while standing at the top of the sledding hills. The cold air brushing
against your face as you glide across the fresh ice. Sitting around a fire with
friends and family sipping a steaming cup of hot chocolate.
Join me as we enjoy many of the fun filled activities planned this winter for
the Winter Wonderland. Mark your calendars for our Family Fun Friday
Nights, Moonlight Snowshoe Tours, beginner Ice Skating Lessons, Snow Cave
Building, and much more. We hope to make this the best winter yet!
Fresh fallen snow, twinkling lights, little ones darting to and fro, crackling pine
in a bonfire - this is winter at its best! As the first snowflakes gracefully fall
upon the ground, our tennis facility magically transforms itself into Winter
Wonderland. We have ice rinks for hockey and open skating, a sledding hill
for youthful adventures, platform tennis courts for evening and weekend
games, hot cocoa to warm the tummy, and a Winter Lodge to warm the toes.
Just beyond the Winter Village is the golf course laden with snow, yearning
for snowshoers to traverse its paths. Join us in winter’s
delights at our Winter Wonderland!

Being a born and raised Minnesotan, it is always a bitter sweet feeling when
winter comes. I always get down putting the golf clubs away for the season but
get super excited dusting off the snowboard. The Club offers a ton of winter
activities at Winter Wonderland to help you cope with the loss of summer
so I encourage you all to check it out!
After you are done enjoying Winter Wonderland, I encourage you all to come
up to the Grille or Bar. The Bar always has daily specialty drinks and appetizers
for you to enjoy and once the course shuts down, the Grille is offering some
new specials!

The Green Side
As the season winds down for another year we start to shift some of our focus
to completing projects that will help improve our situation for the future.
Small drainage projects are constantly on our mind as we examine areas that
are chronically wet and soft. We first need to determine if drainage will work
in these areas. The main question being; is there enough slope to remove
water to a pond or other out of the way area? We have identified several
of these areas and now it is a matter of completing the installation. Some
of these areas include tees that are holding excessive amounts of water.
The reality of turf management is that regardless of how well functioning
or extensive a drainage system is on a golf course there is always room for
more and improvements.

It is amazing every fall how quickly we change gears from course maintenance
to prepping for winter activities. Holidays are just around the corner and this
season also brings with it hockey rinks and tree lightings. It is around this
time that our inner Clark Griswald starts to come through and we start to
think about how we can add more lights to the tree next to the first tee. Last
year over 2,200 bulbs were used, and we are hoping to exceed that number
this year. As we figure out a way to add a few more bulbs every year, I think
that we are starting to give him a run for
his money.
It is also the time of year where we begin
our winter maintenance projects such
as trimming trees. The amount of storm
damage that occurred in 2013 and how
it affected the trees on the course leaves
me wondering how much worse it could
have been without the continued pruning
and removal of problem trees. Because
WCC continues to maintain a preventative
maintenance program on its tree inventory
I feel that the damage could have been
much worse than what it ended up being.
As 2013 has too quickly come to an end,
I would like to thank everyone for the
constant support and patience during
the challenges that again arose this
year. The entire grounds maintenance
team appreciates the constant assistance
with filling or replacing divots, repairing
ballmarks and overall stewardship of the
golf course. Thank you for your assistance
and another great year.

From the Bakery
Fall is here once again. It’s my favorite season, not only because our great
state of Minnesota is so beautiful, or because I have quite an extensive scarf
collection, it’s because I love to bake seasonal treats. Anything with pumpkin,
apples, caramel, pecans, sweet potatoes…really the list goes on and on. I
swear I go through more cinnamon in the next two months than I do the rest
of the year. It’s fantastic! The kitchen not only smells great but its buzzing
with excitement over the great things we have harvested from our garden.
As silly as it sounds, I am already planning the giant WCC gingerbread house
that I am going to build this year.
Besides the bountiful Thanksgiving Feast we have coming up, I have also
saved some time for some great cooking classes, all aimed at helping our
members get inspired for the holidays and to enjoy some time in our kitchens
with us. In early November we have an Adult Holiday Entertaining Cooking
Class and later in the month the kids have a Holiday Baking Class. For those
of you looking to share the flavors of WCC with friends and family, we will
be starting holiday order sheets, full of cookies, pies, and other seasonal
favorites. The order forms will be available from Saturday, November 23rd
until Saturday December 21st.
So to get you in your kitchen I have added an applesauce recipe. Nothing
beats homemade applesauce, making it in the crock pot is easy and your
house will smell divine while the apples and cinnamon simmer all day long.
The hardest part about making this sauce is peeling the apples (which is not
hard at all!) The best part about making this applesauce is you can control
how much sugar goes into it and alter the flavors depending on how you like it.

Ingredients:
• 8 medium apples
(Saucing apple, ask your grocer for a recommendation.)
• 1 strip of lemon peel - use a vegetable peeler
• 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
• 3 inch cinnamon stick
• 5 tsp. light brown sugar (unpacked) - or agave nectar
Directions:
Peel, core, and slice the apples. Place them in the slow cooker. Add
the cinnamon stick, lemon juice, lemon peel, and brown sugar. Set
crock pot to low and cook for 6 hours. Stir apples occasionally, apples
will slowly become a delicious applesauce. Remove cinnamon stick
and use an immersion blender to blend until smooth or if you prefer
a chunky sauce, leave sauce intact. Makes 3 cups.
