By focusing exclusively on couplings, Tuthill Coupling
Group has achieved a competitive edge in providing the
world’s best and most complete line of quick disconnect
couplings. The quick connect/disconnect coupling was
first developed and manufactured by Hansen
Manufacturing Company, founded in 1915 by Fred
Hansen. Since then, the Hansen coupling has become
the industry 100% standard for all quick connect disconnect couplings.
Tuthill Coupling Group designs, manufactures and distributes a broad
range of couplings in brass, steel, stainless steel and plastic. These
products are used to quickly connect and disconnect a wide variety of
fluids and gases, especially air and hydraulic oil.
The bodies, sleeves and plugs are manufactured by Tuthill Coupling
Group, then plated or bright-dipped and/or hardened as required, and
then assembled with other components such as steel balls, seals and
valves. Hansen Couplings are available in over 3,000 configurations
which are marketed to end users and original equipment manufacturers all over the
world.
Since Hansen was purchased by Tuthill
Corporation in 1979, it has maintained a
steady pattern of growth. Tuthill Coupling
Group, an ISO 9001 Certified Company,
will continue to be a major factor in this
market by offering a comprehensive range
of products which are thoroughly
researched, carefully designed, and precision manufactured. In 1998, Tuthill
Coupling Group fully implemented SAP-R3
Business Software offering distinct advantages to our
customers while assuring full Y2K compliance. Our
products are widely distributed through an increasingly
strong network of worldwide distributors that are well
versed in the engineered fluid power product needs of
our customers.

Description & Selection
Sockets/Plugs Defined
Socket: Also referred to as “Coupling”, “Connector” or “Quick
Disconnect”. A socket consists of a spring-loaded shutoff valve and a
positive locking mechanism. It is used to connect equipment to a fluid,
such as compressed air, through a mating plug.
Plug: Also referred to as “Connector” or “Nipple”. The mating device that
is inserted into the socket and locked to complete the connection. Plugs
are unvalved, exhausting downstream line at disconnection.
Type
SINGLE SHUT-OFF (One-Way): Socket only is valved to shut off supply
line at disconnection. Plug is unvalved, exhausting downstream line at
disconnection. Most applications use the single shutoff type. Socket
should be installed on the pressurized side of the line.
Operation
MANUAL SOCKET: Socket sleeve must be manually retracted to engage
and disengage a plug.
AUTOMATIC SOCKET: Simply push the plug into the socket to connect.
Manually retract sleeve to disengage plug.
SAFETY SOCKET: Allows connection and disconnection at “0” pressure.
Plug is securely locked before valve is opened; downstream line is
exhausted before plug is removed, eliminating hose “kick”. Full-Bore
Series are safety vent sockets.
Styles & Interchangeability
The style or interchange of plug in use will determine the socket style.
There are several styles used throughout industry today, each developed
and made popular by a specific manufacturer. Key identification features
are the length of the nose and type of locking groove.
Selection
1. IDENTIFY/SELECT THE PLUG DESIGN: Choose the socket and plug
style desired, or determine the style plug in use (by the key identification
features described above) to select the socket required.
2. DETERMINE THE PROPER SIZE (CAPACITY) REQUIRED: Determine
volume of air required (scfm) at the applied pressure and match to the
capacity socket and plug, or match inside diameter of hose used to the
socket capacity. Do not design in choke points, such as a 1/2” hose I.D.
with a 1/4” capacity QD. This restricts air flow, reducing equipment performance. The capacities of the mating socket and plug must be the same.
3. SELECT THE DESIRED SOCKET OPERATION: Automatic Sockets are
faster and easier to use. Safety Sockets, with a venting feature, are particularly attractive for higher pressure, larger hose diameter applications.
4. SELECT THE SIZE AND TYPE END CONNECTION: The size and type
of connection at the end of the pipe, hose or inlet port will determine the
end connection needed on the socket or plug. NOTE: Sockets and plugs
with hose barb end connection require the use of a hose clamp.

Connection - Figure 1
To connect, simply push the plug into the socket. Actuation
of the outer sleeve (A) opens the air passage. As shown here,
the socket and the plug are fully engaged and under pressure.
The valve — a hollowed nylon ball that rotates in a socket—
allows straight-through
unimpeded air flow from
one end of the connection
to the other. When the
outer sleeve (A) is nearest
the plug, the valve is in the
“ON” position.

The Full-Bore Series is a premium automatictype one-way shutoff coupler that offers a
pressure-relieving feature that fully vents
dowstream air, making connection/disconnection fast and easy, and reducing hose
whip. The unique straight-through design
eliminates restrictive springs and poppet
valves, allowing unimpeded air flow. Since
two sleeves must be actuated in sequence to
bleed off back pressure and release the connector, accidental uncoupling is virtually
eliminated. The Full-Bore Series is available
in 3/8” and 1/2” capacities.

Warranty, Pressure Ratings
• About Industry Interchanges... It is possible to connect two different manufacturers’ parts together so that they will
effect a seal and work properly in a fluid system. Tuthill Coupling Group cannot guarantee the quality, workmanship,
dimensions, or tolerances of the other manufacturers’ parts, even though they might be interchangeable. Therefore,
whenever mixing parts, the final assembly must always be tested before being put into service. Failure to test could
result in a sudden failure of the coupling causing severe personal injury or death.
• Couplings do wear out. In order to avoid severe bodily
injury or death, couplings must be routinely checked for
condition and replaced if necessary.
• Over-pressurization could result in a sudden
failure of the coupling causing severe bodily injury
or death. Be sure to select the proper coupling for
your application and use it only within the specified
service pressure range.

Pressure Ratings**
Every effort has been made to have all photographs and
drawings accurately represent the products as they actually
were at the time this catalog was printed. Obviously, however, so that we may effectively continue to meet the
requirements of our users, changes in some items may
have been made during the life of this catalog—which,
on occasion, may be made without notice.
Since application conditions vary so widely, the
pressures listed are intended as a guide only and not
a guarantee of performance. Pressure peaks and extreme
surge flows may cause a coupling to become inoperative.
“All Tuthill Coupling Group products are guaranteed, for a
period of 90 days from the date of shipment to a customer,
to be free of defects in material and workmanship. Any
claimed defect must be reported to Tuthill Coupling Group
in writing within the warranty period. This warranty is limited to replacing or repairing, at the Company’s option, f.o.b.
the Company’s factory, any part which upon Company
inspection is found to be defective. Components purchased
by the Company from others are warranted only to the
extent of the guarantee or warranty, if any, made to the
Company.
**NOTE!
Pressure ratings listed were determined by testing
threaded sockets and plugs. Sockets and plugs with
hose stem and hose clamp end connections are
designed and recommended for use with shop air line
pressure only (150 psig maximum) when used with
the appropriate style hose.
THE ABOVE WARRANTY COMPRISES THE COMPANY’S
SOLE AND ENTIRE WARRANTY OBLIGATION AND LIABILITY IN CONNECTION WITH TUTHILL COUPLING
GROUP HANSEN COUPLINGS. ALL OTHER WARRANTIES,
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, WARRANTIES OR MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS
FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE EXPRESSLY EXCLUDED.
THE COMPANY IN NO EVENT SHALL BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF
THE SALE OR USE OF HANSEN COUPLINGS.”
