Annual Report
2007/2008
The mission of Lions Foundation of
Canada is to provide service to Canadians
with disabilities in the areas of mobility,
safety and independence.
The Foundation operates Dog Guides Canada, a preeminent national training school and
charity, which assists individuals through four specialized Dog Guide programs. These Dog
Guides are provided at no cost to eligible Canadians from coast-to-coast. The Foundation
relies on donations from individuals, service clubs and corporations and does not receive any
government funding.

A Message from the Chairperson
and Executive Director
Milestone anniversaries are not always a true
cause for celebration. However, for us, our 25th
anniversary is truly significant in terms of the
achievements realized to date for our organization.
As the year began, we outlined plans for all the things that would be necessary for us to
advance to the next major level of service. With the Dog Guide programs continuing
to grow and the need dramatically obvious, we asked for people’s help. The demand for
our Dog Guides never slows despite the number of teams graduating each month. We
are continually broadening our skill set to enable our Dog Guides to assist many more
people with different disabilities.
Our Dog Guide program officially expanded this year with the addition of Seizure
Response Dog Guides to our already established Canine Vision, Hearing Ear and
Special Skills Dog Guide programs. We believe this program will be a huge boost to
children and adults seeking more independence, safety and mobility while living
with epilepsy.
Chairperson of the Board
Our growth plans have been developed and our exciting new expansion is underway,
giving us beautiful new kennel facilities to house twice as many Dog Guides along with
a veterinary care clinic.
We continue to educate more top quality trainers to allow future growth. Our threeyear apprenticeship program for trainers is a major focus, and will lead to many more
Dog Guides across the country.
All of this is possible due only to amazing new levels of funding support. Every dollar
for Dog Guides is provided by donations, and we are so thankful that more and more
Canadians are thinking of Lions Foundation of Canada and Dog Guides Canada.
In fact, this past year had incredible new levels of gifts provided through estates. We are
very thankful to those who allow their estate to live on through newly trained Dog
Guides. These gifts range from important small contributions to our largest ever single
donation received this year through an estate.
Executive Director
We also benefit a great deal from the Lions Clubs that founded the school in 1983
and continue to provide critical funding. This past year saw a jump in support
through donations as well as Lions Clubs organizing Purina® Walk for Dog Guides
in their communities.
Our Board of Directors and staff should all be proud of a very special 25th year.
Thank you to all of our supporters.

Kennel and Veterinary Expansion Project
Highlights of
our 25th Year
Following the successful expansion of the breeding facility,
the addition of the Seizure Response Dog Guide program and
a growing demand for our Dog Guides, it became necessary
to expand the kennels at the Oakville training school. As one
of the goals for the 25th anniversary, the new kennels will
double the current size. The kennel was designed through
collaboration between staff and experienced designers and
incorporates recommendations from other service dog schools around the world. This new “state-of-the-art” facility will
create a great housing for our dogs in training. The new on-site vet clinic will help increase the care provided to our foster
training.

Twenty-five years ago marked the birth of
a life-changing organization for many Canadians,
their families, and their communities.
George’s Journey of Joy
G
PD
PDG George Hostick, former Chairman of the Board, celebrated his 70th birthday by
commemorating
the 25th Anniversary of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. He
co
celebrated
cellebrated with an 800 km bike ride around Lake Ontario. George’s goal was to create
awareness
awaren and raise funds for Dog Guides. He began his ride on May 22nd
and finished in Oakville on June 13th, 2008. Thanks to the generous
support of individuals, corporations and clubs along the route, his
su
ride
ri raised $15,000 to support the Expansion Kennel Project.
Lions Clubs across Canada sought to develop a national project to embody its service to
people with visual impairments. The result was Lions Foundation of Canada and Canine
Vision Canada. Now serving Canadians with a medical or physical disability through four
specialized Dog Guide programs, Lions Foundation of Canada is proud to have reached its
25th year of service. Here are just some of the many unique events that took place during
our year long celebration of 25 years of service.
Dog Guide Featured on First Braille Stamp
Canada Post issued its first stamp to feature Braille this past year. The domestic
rate stamp features Luke, a yellow Labrador Canine Vision Dog Guide from Lions
Foundation of Canada. The Official First Day Cover features Special Skills Dog
Guide, Boston and Hearing Ear Dog Guide, Lee, also trained at the Foundation.
The stamp recognizes the many ways Dog Guides provide mobility, safety and
independence to individuals from coast-to-coast.

Hearing Ear
Dog Guides
Canine Vision Dog Guides have
been enriching the lives of Canadians
who are blind or visually impaired
since 1985.
Hearing Ear Dog Guides assist
individuals who are deaf or hard
of hearing to detect sounds they are
unable to hear on their own.
These Dog Guides are trained to assist
their handlers in navigating obstacles
typically found on most daily routes,
including cars, curbs, escalators and
stairs.
The benefits of living with a Canine
Vision Dog Guide are immeasurable.
With their assistance, handlers
experience increased mobility, safety
and independence.
The confidence they gain allows them to
pursue education, careers and activities in
their communities.
With the knowledge that they are capable
of traveling freely and safely, handlers feel
self-assured every time they leave their homes
with their Dog Guide.
4
/ Lions Foundation of Canada Annual Report 2007~2008
Hearing Ear Dog Guides are taught to
distinguish sounds, make physical contact
with their handlers and lead them to
whatever is making the noise.
Hearing Ear Dog Guides alert their
handlers to everyday sounds such as a
telephone ringing, a kettle boiling, a smoke
alarm sounding or someone calling their
name. They have been alerting people to
these sounds since 1988, providing peace
of mind to those who need assistance.
“I can trust my
Dog Guide for all
the sounds.”
Debbie and Encore
The help of a Hearing Ear Dog Guide gives
handlers an increased sense of security by
acting as their link to the world of sound.
This allows them to function unhindered
and feel more comfortable and at ease in
their own home.

Special Skills
Dog Guides
Seizure Response
Dog Guides
Special Skills Dog Guides enable
their handlers to feel more safe and
independent while increasing their
mobility.
Seizure Response Dog Guides
are trained to assist individuals
who have regular seizures due
to epilepsy.
These Dog Guides have been
assisting people with physical or
medical disabilities since 1991.
At the onset of a
seizure, the Dog Guide
is capable of activating
an alert system or
barking for help.
On a daily basis, Special Skills
Dog Guides help their handlers
operate light switches, retrieve
objects and open and close
doors. These Dog Guides are
also trained to bark or activate
an alert system when help is
needed.
“My Dog Guide puts
my family and friends at
ease with my epilepsy.”
The knowledge that a
trustworthy companion
is always close by gives
handlers the confidence
to live independently.
Their ability to perform such a
wide range of tasks puts Special
Skills Dog Guides in increasingly
high demand and has proven
them to be a vital aid for many
individuals from coast-to-coast.
Phillip and Joey
No longer restricted by the
possibility of a seizure,
clients feel safe leaving the
house at their leisure with
their Dog Guide.

Dog Guides
of the Future
Volunteers
All Dog Guides begin their lives as foster
puppies. These special puppies are bred
at Lions Foundation’s breeding facility in
Breslau, Ontario.
Thousands of people across the country
volunteer their time and talents to Dog
Guides Canada.
More then 200 foster families participate in the
Foster Puppy Program, dedicating their time to
raise these dogs for their first year of life. Puppies
are placed in foster homes at eight weeks of age
for approximately one year and then retuned
for assessment and placement in one of the four
Dog Guide training programs. Foster families are
responsible for housetraining puppies, teaching
them how to be obedient and socializing them to
various settings that they might encounter once
they become a working Dog Guide.
Breeds commonly used must be adaptable, willing to work and able to cope
with any situation they may encounter as a working Dog Guide. They must be
of a gentle and giving nature yet confident enough to take on the responsibility
of their guiding role.
The dedication of foster families
is what makes the Dog Guide
programs possible. Lions
Foundation of Canada is extremely
grateful to all of the foster
families who give their
time to raise these
remarkable puppies.
The partnerships created are what allows Lions Foundation of Canada to
provide their services to those in need. Hundreds of people volunteer their
time and expertise each day to assist the Foundation in many ways.

There are many different ways to make a planned gift, and most importantly planned
gifts can be tailored to your personal and financial circumstances. Gifts in the form of a
bequest, life insurance, annuity, cash or securities are accepted. Gifts can be directed to
a specific Dog Guide program or to the area with the greatest need.
The Dog Guide Legacy program includes the Dog Guide Endowment and named
endowment funds. A gift to the Dog Guide Endowment Fund ensures that the Dog
Guide training programs have a continuous and secure source of funding as only the
interest earned on the fund is spent, leaving the capital intact. Some donors establish a
personal endowment or trust fund to honour or remember a loved one. Others create
a permanent legacy of their own. Regardless of their motivation or inspiration, we
appreciate their generosity.
Ward & Shirley Russell
Sylvia Howard of Minden, Ontario, was a long time supporter of Canine Vision
Canada and its sponsorship program. Sylvia was very impressed with the Dog Guides
provided to people who are blind and visually impaired. Upon her death in 1995,
she made a provision to continue her support with the assistance of her nephew,
Ward Russell of Burlington, Ontario.
“Aunt Sylvia was especially proud of the difference she was making in the lives of
people with visual disabilities,” says Ward. “She made it very clear that she wanted
this support to continue well into the future.”
Ward was entrusted with $100,000 to be invested to provide an annual sponsorship
for a Canine Vision Canada Dog Guide.
After reviewing several options with his financial advisor, Ward decided to purchase
an annuity that provides approximately $10,000 each July. This contribution is
re-invested until the end of each year.
Ward admits that he acquired the annuity at the right time when rates were at their
highest. “We feel that we should get the most we can from our investment.”
Since 1995, Ward and his wife Shirley have sponsored a total of 12 Dog Guide teams.
A provision has also been made that upon Ward’s death the proceeds of his life
insurance will go to Shirley for re-investment with proceeds to Canine Vision Canada.
As an extra bonus Ward and Shirley receive a $6,000 tax receipt from Lions
Foundation each year! The extra tax savings help Ward and Shirley provide the little
extras to their grandchildren, such as music lessons.

Dog Guide Sponsorship
“The gift of independence
is priceless. The cost of
raising and training a
Dog Guide is not.”
With no government funding, Lions
Foundation of Canada has grown from
a dream to an established and rapidly
expanding charity that contributes in a
very real way to the day-to-day lives of
Canadians with disabilities.
Since its inception twenty five years ago, over 1,300 specially trained Dog
Guides have been placed with Canadians with a visual, hearing, medical or
other physical disability. Each Dog Guide team costs approximately $20,000
to raise, train and place,
yet with the support of
many, Dog Guides are
provided at no cost to
qualified applicants.
From before a puppy
is even born until after
a Dog Guide team
graduates, thousands of
people help every step
of the way. Whether
it’s a breeder donating
a breeding dog, an
organization or individual sponsoring a Dog Guide team, a Lions Club hosting
a fundraising event, someone sending in $25, or a grant from a foundation for
class expenses, each and every donation makes a difference.
14
/ Lions Foundation of Canada Annual Report 2007~2008
Sponsorship covers an important portion of the costs of raising and training each Dog Guide team.
• Canine Vision Canada – $6,000
• Hearing Ear Dog Guides – $4,000
• Special Skills Dog Guides – $10,000
• Seizure Response Dog Guides – $10,000
Corporate Support
Corporations have many opportunities to support Dog Guides. Whichever way is chosen, each gift makes
a difference in providing deserving Canadians with a Dog Guide.
• Donate funds to purchase items, or as a general donation
• Provide in-kind supplies or services to help defray operating costs
• Sponsor an event or Dog Guide team
• Choose Dog Guides as their charity of choice
• Donate a portion of sales to Dog Guides
• Have a payroll deduction plan
• Provide matching gifts for donations from employees
• Provide volunteer time of employees to the Foundation
• Designate proceeds from their own special event, such as a golf tournament
Special Events
• Host or participate in a Purina® Walk for Dog Guides
• Host golf tournaments benefiting Dog Guides
• Lions Foundation of Canada hosts several special events throughout the year – Sit, Stay, Bid!
Auction, Open Houses, Canine Challenge and more.
• Many organizations, companies and Lions clubs dedicate proceeds from their own special
fundraising events
Lions Awards & Fellowships
• Life Membership Awards to honour a Lion or individual
• Fellowships to recognize an “All Round Good Lion”
• Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowships to recognize outstanding Canadian Lions and other
deserving recipients while building an endowment fund for Lions Foundation of Canada
Commemorative Giving
•
•
•
•
Memorial Forest to commemorate the life of a loved one with a special tree
Pet Wall Memorial to commemorate the life of your pet with a plaque
In Memoriam to honour a recently departed loved one
In Lieu of Flowers Card so that a donation is made to Lions Foundation of Canada in the
event of your death
Planned Giving
• A lasting legacy with a planned gift in your will
• Dog Guide Endowment to invest in the future of Dog Guides – only the interest generated
annually is spent on programs and new initiatives
