1. Golden Week: May 3rd to May 6th (National Holidays)
April 29th
“Showa no Hi” celebrates the birth of late emperor Hirohito, known as Showa
Tennou. Originally, this holiday was named “Midori no Hi”, but in 2007, the name was
changed to “Showa no Hi”.
May 3rd
“Kenpo-Kinen-Bi” celebrates the rectification of Japanese constitution in 1947.
May 4th
“Midori no Hi” was moved to May 4th to fall within Golden Week when April 29th became
“Showa no Hi”.
May 5th
On “Kodomo no Hi,” Koi-Nobori, or carp streamers, will be displayed to celebrate the
growth of children
May 6th
Substitute holiday for “Midori no Hi” which falls on a Sunday this year.
2. Flowers
Mount Chausu Shibazakura Festival
Mt. Chausu (1358m) is the highest mountain in Aichi prefecture and each season is beautiful.
400,000 shibazakuras will be in full bloom like a flower carpet on the mountain top at this
time of the year. You can get to the top of the mountain by a lift and enjoy the flowers and the
view. There will be many stalls during the festival period.

Roses at Shonai Ryokuchi Park
Shonai Ryokuchi Koen has one of the biggest rose gardens in Nagoya with 2,500 rose bushes
of 54 varieties.

Gifu Flower Festival Commemorative Park
Gifu Flower Festival Commemorative Park has 30,000 rose bushes of an amazing 7,000
varieties, the most in Japan. There are a various events during the festival.

Directions
Take the JR Ota Line from JR Tajimi to Kani Station, or take the Meitetsu
Hiromi Line from Inuyama Station to Shin-Kani Station and transfer to
Totetsu Bus to Commemorative Park.
The park is a 5 minute drive from Kani-Mitake IC on Tokai Kanjo
Highway.

Yatsuhasi Kakitsubata Flower Festival
The kakitsubata (iris) in the Yatsuhashi area was inspiration for the famous Heian period
waka poet, Ariwara no Narihira. A festival to celebrate the iris started about 60 years ago;
over 200,000 tourists visit each year. The iris is the official flower of the Aichi Prefecture and
of Chiryuu City.

Nagoya Ekitopia Festival
This is the 31st Annual Ekitopia Festival taking place around Nagoya Station during Golden
Week. An exciting parade, charity bazaar and recycle activities will be held during the
festival.

Take the Higashiyama Subway Line, JR, Kintetsu or Meitetsu to Nagoya
Station.
Walking courses around Nagoya Subway Stations
The temperatures are not too high yet so this is the best time of year for walking. Walking
courses organized by the Nagoya Subway System are free and reservation is not required.
You can pick up walking map from the starting Nagoya city subway station between 9:30AM
and 11AM. There is one course in the month of May.
Shimada Jizodera (Temple), Shimada Shrine and Narumi Haisui (Drain) Tower
You will visit at Shimada Jizodera Temple and Shrine, and Narumi Drain Tower which will
be opened to the public to commemorate the centennial of start of the Nagoya water works.

The walking course starts at Shiogamaguchi Station on the Tsurumai
Subway Line and ends at Aioiyama Station on the Sakuradori Line.
Spring Walk in Nagoya with NIC Walking Guides Volunteers
You will visit Chikaramachi-cho to Shumoku-cho and surrounding areas known for their
culture, totaling about 3.5km. (Catholic Chikaramachi Church – Sasuke Toyoda’s Residence
– Street of Culture – Nagoya City Archives) Reservations are required and interpreters are
available (English, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese)

Kuragaike Park and TOYOTA Kuragaike Memorial Hall
*Kuragaike Park
They have a ranch with sheep, horses and cattle, an open space for children, flower fields, a
huge grass hill and a big pond called Kuragaike, where you can enjoy rowing a boat. You can

also use the route bus which goes around the big park (¥100 for adults, ¥50 for children). It’s
a great place to spend a comfortable day relaxing in nature with your family.

seven minutes, or 13 minutes from Toyota-Matsudaira IC.
*TOYOTA Kuragaike Memorial Hall
This is a memorial hall in Kuragaike Park that introduces the history of TOYOTA, which
started by making looms and has developed into a giant automobile corporation. Additionally,
a display of Impressionist works will be held at the art salon in the hall until June 8th.

4. Exhibitions
The Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Art -300 Years of French ArtThe Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Art will be showing works of Rococo, Impressionist Art,
and Ecole de Paris, representing the history of French Art from the 18th to 20th centuries.
The works of Galle, a leading artist of the art nouveau era, such as glass and furniture will
also be on exhibit.

Tokugawa Art Museum
Gifts from Shogun Communion and Rituals
The Owari Tokugawa Family had communion with the Tokugawa Shogunate and was often
given presents such as ritual items used in the coming the age of ceremony for boys,
marriages, the birthdays of an heir. These well-loved gifts with wonderful memory are
displayed.
Hosa Bunko Library -Tokugawa Muneharu Exhibition
Muneharu Tokugawa (1696-1764), the 7th head of the Owari Tokugawa Family, was an
unusual lord. While every lord called for practicing strict economy during this period, he

practiced a unique economic policy. This eccentric, popular, and attention-getting lord’s
mementos and relevant materials will be on display.

Kuwayama Art Museum - The Scenery of Mountain and Waterside
This exhibition features works of “Mountain Scenery” by Taikan Yokoyama, Kansetsu
Hashimoto and other artists depicting mountains such as Mt. Fuji and “Water Scenery” works
by Seiho Takeuchi, Gyokudo Kawai and others depicting shorelines and riversides that
invoke images of the everyday lives of people.

Tado Festival
The focus of this festival, held at Tado Shrine, is the Age-uma-shinji ritual. Six young men,
wearing samurai costumes, will bravely attempt to ride up a 2-meter steep slope on
horseback.

Atsuta Shrine Festival
For those of you who enjoy festivals, you can’t miss the largest and most famous festival in
June held at Atsuta Shrine with various performances and a procession of floats. At night,
there will be many stalls and a fireworks show and several floats are lit up with hundreds of
lanterns.

Arimatsu Shibori Festival
Arimatsu is an old artisan’s village famous for shibori, a technique of tie-dyeing cloth which
has been passed down from generation to generation for 400 years. During the festival there
will be shibori demonstrations, sales, a parade, a fashion show and a stage performance.

Tsutsuicho and Dekimachi Tenno Festival
These two Tenno Festivals held in Tsutsuicho and Dekimachi of Higashi-ku have been held
for over 200 years. Five historic floats, each carrying mechanical dolls, will travel around the
area from morning until night. On Sunday, all floats will gather in front of the Tokugawa
Museum at noon, and there will be mechanical doll performance.

Bunraku
Performances of Edo-style puppetry known as Bunraku will be held. Each performance will
include a brief explanation in Japanese on the working of the puppets and the shamisen, a
traditional Japanese instrument.

7. NIC Programs and Events
NIC Nihongo No Kai
NIC Nihongo no Kai will hold open admissions for their next batch of language lessons for
adults. The series of Japanese classes are conducted by NIC volunteers and organized for
foreigners to learn Japanese language, customs, and culture. Applicants must bring the
completed application form and have an interview on May 11. If there are too many
applicants for each class, spaces will be filled by lottery.
Ten courses are available including Conversation, Hiragana, and Kanji.

The Nagoya International Center also offers Japanese classes for children, from the first
grade of elementary school to the third year of junior high school. Applicants must bring the

Book Recycling Bazaar
The Nagoya International Center will be holding its annual Book Recycling Bazaar.
Paperbacks, foreign magazines and textbooks in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese
will be available for purchase. Purchases will be on a donation basis. A portion of the
donations will go to the World Terakoya Movement, a movement which fosters literacy in
developing countries through UNESCO.
