Message from the President’s Desk
BY:
Louis J. Benavides
For Los Bexareños Genealogical and Historical Society
ne of the biggest challenges that Hispanics
have in researching their genealogy is that so
many records are in Spanish.
! Records after 1836 were mostly written in
English. Those records are available to us, and that
is the basis of our current “Anglo” history. But our
genealogy and history started way before the formation of the 2nd Republic of Texas (1836). Estevan
F. Austin maintained two written records, one in
Spanish and one in English, but that practice was
eliminated by the second president of the Republic
of Texas, Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar. That is why
most Texas history books give a very basic history of
Texas and the rest of the southwest prior to 1836.
! Many records written in Spanish were destroyed
by groups who had an interest in rewriting history. The “Know Nothings” was one group and the
“Knights of the Golden Circle” was another group.
The forerunner to these two groups was the army
of Felix Huston, a Mississippi lawyer “of volatile
temper and decidedly aggressive intentions toward
México.”1 Historians can track the elimination of
Tejano land grant families and their replacements
by the names of those who came to Texas with Felix
Huston. Few Tejano families survived the purge
that began in Victoria along the Lavaca River, which
included the execution of the De León family, the
founders of Victoria. After the war for Texas Independence, the De León family was subjected to horrible injustices. As one historian put it: "They became
the victims of the most unjust discrimination ever
known in Texas." The family had been robbed of their
dignity and all of their lands. They did not even have
monies to pay for tombstones for their dead.2
! Many Mexicanos have told stories of the Texas
volunteers who joined the United States Army during the Mexican War. The Texas volunteers headed
straight to the municipal records with the intent to
find land titles and to sack and burn them. Los
Bexareños have found some of these records in their
search for their genealogy. The descendants of
town’s people were asked to take bundles of these
records and hide them from the Texas volunteers.
Our members listened to the family’s stories
regarding these records from the gatekeepers themselves.
❧❧❧❧❧
O
! We complain about the lack of Indigenous/
Spanish/Mexican/Tejano history before 1836. However, we still have thousands of Spanish records that
need to be translated.
! One may not be fluent in Spanish, and the old
Spanish causes many to give up. Many of us do not
have the time to learn how to read the old language.
Many of us depend on the current “fast” technology,
and it frustrates us to have to meticulously read
the beautifully, handwritten cursive writing in old
Spanish. And finally, as our December speaker, the
Texas State Archivist, Jelaine Chubb, informed us
that sometimes even the expert translators disagree
on the meaning of a word.
! My wife, Sandra, was translating family documents for one of our members. I was astonished
with the large amount of symbolism that Spanish
records have regarding the Catholic Church. I
believe that translators will not obtain the gist or the
correct meaning of some of the translations without
the Catholic symbolisms.
! I thought, well, this is one reason “experts may
disagree” — one understands religion and the other
does not. One phrase described the ancestor as being
“married and veiled.” "Veiled in the face of the
Church" means placing the Humeral Veil over the
heads or shoulders of the bride and groom during
the celebration of the marriage. It has a mystical
significance emphasizing that the two are now one
in spirit as well as in body. The Humeral Veil is an
oblong-scarf of the same material as the vestments
worn by the priest officiating at the marriage. It is an
ancient custom, but not used now.3

! Another reason it is difficult to translate Spanish
records is that many given names include “María.”
It is more confusing when males are named “María.”
Once again, the religion of the parents comes into
play. Researchers may become confused. In my own
personal family’s case my great-grandfather, “Luz,”
was nowhere to be found until we found that his
name was not “Luz” but “María de la Luz.” The
name elucidates the family’s deep respect for Our
Lady of Guadalupe. “Luz” is spelled out in the shadow of her tunic. To my ancestors, there was a real
connection to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and what this
meant may be lost to us.
! Another unexpected practice in Hispanic genealogy is when a young child dies, the next same sex
infant is named exactly as their previous dead isbling. Researchers may find two birth records but
only one death record or some other type of confusing combination.
! The translation continued with instructions that
the ancestor be buried “when the Lord send him
death” and that he be “returned to the earth.” Is this
a symbolism of the Good Friday ritual in the Catholic Church? The document continued that his burial
be in the tradition of Saint Francis. What does that
mean?
! Yes, our Hispanic genealogy is locked in many of
the Spanish texts. Translation of those Spanish texts
needs to be done. This is a good opportunity to
begin our learning curve. We will get better at
translating the old Spanish texts. We should not
forget that a good understanding of religion may be
needed to translate correctly.
Los Bexareños Genealogical
and Historical Society congratulates MS Erika ArredondoHaskins on her new position as
Executive Director of the Hispanic Heritage Center of Texas
(HHCTX). Her service began
December 15, 2014.
MS Arredondo-Haskins is a
Leadership Studies doctoral
candidate at Our Lady of the
Lake University preparing for
graduation in May 2015.
Originally from Anaheim,
California, she was raised in
San Antonio and earned a
bachelors degree in business
and a masters degree in
religious studies from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW).
It was during her time as a doctoral student that Arredondo-Haskins
discovered her family tree included a direct line of prominent Spanish
military leaders including Spanish Governor of the Province of Texas (1731),
Juan Antonio Bustillo y Zevallos; capitán Diego Ramón, founder of San
Antonio Mission de Valero (1718), also known as the Álamo; capitán of San
Antonio de Béxar Presidio (1733), José de Urrutia; and Domingo Bustillo, a
lieutenant in the Spanish Royal Army and later alcalde of San Antonio de
Béxar (1816). As a result, MS Arredondo-Haskins has since embarked on
continuous scholarly research and writing of Spanish-Mexican Texas history.
MS Arredondo-Haskins’ article, “José Domingo Estevan Bustillo (1779-1854),” has
recently been accepted for publication in the Handbook of Texas Online.
In addition to her service to the HHCTX, MS Arredondo-Haskins is
currently an advisory board member at the D.R. Semmes YMCA, is an active
member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas - Álamo Couriers Chapter,
and a member of the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA). She also
contributed to the Women’s Global Connection (UIW) in which she traveled
to Zambia to teach business workshops to female entrepreneurs.

! Los Bexareños obtained permission from the
University of Arizona to reprint a book on how to
translate Spanish text. The limited edition “Northern
Spanish Research Guide” is available from our books
selection while supplies last.
! There are many Spanish records that still need to
be translated. It is our duty as Hispanic genealogists
to take that responsibility on. So I guess that goes on
my New Year’s resolution for 2015. See you at the
Spanish Archives.

Texas
Dallas,
!
It is with great sadness that I inform you that
Roberto Vela, a very good, loyal friend and cofounder of
HOGAR de Dallas passed on 24 December 2014,
Christmas Eve, at 11:30. The family left for Harlingen,
Texas today where Roberto will be interred at the family
plot. !
Irma and family are planning a memorial and rosary
for him upon their return; sometime next week. Check the
Dallas Morning news and/or with the office at St. Pius. !
Via genealogy, we found we were distant cousins
branching from two different Vela brothers.
!
May he ... Rest In Peace ... with the ancestors he
searched for while he was with us, which lead him to create
his wall side family wheel.
!
Our condolences to the Vela Family.

Websites That Tell
Our Stories
! There is more to genealogy than just
gathering names of ancestors. It is important to do the basics, like pedigree
charts, names, dates, places, family work
sheets, etc. But, let us not forget that
there are stories that go with these
names. There are histories in the places
and times they lived. Photographs and
stories bring our ancestors to life. Here
we intend to transport you to websites

✥
ou’ve spent endless hours researching your family tree. Many of you have gone to county courthouses,
city libraries and cemeteries in search of a name, a date, a place that might lead you to your ancestor.
You have burned the midnight oil searching the internet. You have accumulated genealogical books
over the years and now have your own family library. You have preserved old family photos and
collected family artifacts. You have experienced the frustrations of hitting a brick wall and the ecstasy of
finding that long lost relative. You have, in fact, built your family legacy.
Y
What happens to your research when you leave?
Many members of Los Bexareños Genealogical and Historical Society have 10 - 20 - 30 years of research.
They have compiled notes, journals, photo scrapbooks, and a library of family history. We encourage every
member to prepare a Genealogical Will and add it to their Last Will and Testament. Find a descendant who is
willing to take the responsibility of carrying on your never-ending research and/or make a copy for your
genealogical society. This is definitely something to consider for the new year - 2015. ✥

“This is now a hotel.
We were lucky to have stayed there.”
!
We had a wonderful time in Spain going to small villages and towns. Many had Jewish quarters that were very
beautiful. We even went to Placencia where there was a Jewish Necropolis. Our ancestors, the Ha Levis and Santa
Marías, lived in Placencia after leaving Burgos, but we found no sign of their presence. Merida was filled with
Roman ruins that were just as beautiful as the ones in Rome. We went to Medellín where Hernán Cortés and our
ancestor, Captain Andrés Tapia, were born. We went to Trujillo where Pizarro was born, and where there was a most
beautiful Alcazaba and the best churros I have ever eaten. It was worth the climb—my hips had to endure!!! Cáceres,
where another ancestor, Hernando Fernández Castro, was born. They had a wonderful museum and a Jewish
Quarter. Hervás was a lovely tiny village that caters to those following the Jewish Sefarad route, and it also has a
lovely Jewish Quarter. We bought a Menorah there. Burgos has the most awesome cathedral we have ever seen, and
a Human Evolution Museum that is fabulous!! There have been some new digs found near Burgos that are supposed
to be the oldest in Europe. Gilbert is all excited about going there on another trip just to visit those digs!! I don't
know if my hips and knees can take such climbing!!! Another tiny town we visited was Covarrubias. Supposedly,
the Cadena’s lived there in the past, but again we found no signs of them; however, in a nearby town, we found a
street call "Las Cadenas." We also got to hear a wonderful group of monks sing Gregorian Chants for their evening
Vespers. The monastery in Santo Domingo de Silos was outstanding. The church was so old and spark, but sooooo
peaceful while I sat all alone waiting for Gilbert to find parking.
!
The roasted lamb we had in the tiny village of Guadalupe was EXCELLENT, and the hotel/monastery was the
most beautiful place we have ever stayed in. ✥

AMBROSIO C. LEAL
BY:
David J. Leal
For Los Bexareños Genealogical and Historical Society
Ambrosio C. LEAL, age 88, joined his wife with the Lord on 13
December 2014. He was born in General Bravo, Nuevo León,
México on 3 March 1926, to Ambrosio LEAL, Sr., and Juana
TIJERINA Leal of the same town. He was preceded in death by
his parents, his wife of 64 years Elvira GARZA Leal, a brother
and four sisters. He is survived by his loving sons, David J.
LEAL, M.B.A, Adrian C. LEAL, Esq., and Daniel H. LEAL,
M.D. He spent the first years of his life with his family on a
ranch given to his mother by her father, Casimiro TIJERINA. The civil unrest
in the countryside forced the family to relocate to Monterrey, México and this
is where he lived until his marriage. He attended the Prepatoria de Monterrey and later joined an amateur basketball
team "Transportes del Norte" where he was given the name
el "pájaro" due to his quick, agile moves. He and his team
won an amateur national championship in 1948, and he was
later inducted into their Hall of Fame. He married Elvira
GARZA of San Antonio, Texas on 1 October 1950, at San
Fernando Cathedral. He immigrated, against the strong
objections of the family patriarch, general Bonifacio
SALINAS LEAL, on 8 December 1950, as a resident alien. He operated a paint
contracting business and, with his wife’s help, manage their rental properties.
He was a member of the Monte Vista Historical Society, and Los Bexareños
Hispanic Genealogical and Historical Society. He was a proud descendant of
Spanish Conquistadors and the founding families of Monterrey, México (1596).
His Tejano roots include being a direct descendant of Capitán Antonio LEAL
who with his brother, general Alonso DE LEÓN, came to Texas in the 1680s
in search of French incursion and found the remains of LaSalle's fort. He was
also a direct descendant of governador Clemente DE LA GARZA FALCÓN,
governor of Texas y Coahuila in the 1730s. He was a member of Our Lady of
Grace Catholic Church and attended mass daily with his wife as long as their
health permitted. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Vatican with his wife
further solidified his faith. He was born at a time when the Mexican
constitution and laws were very anticlerical and his family had to travel to
Monterrey to baptize him in 1927; most clerics had already gone into exile
and church properties confiscated and closed. The strong and loyal faith his
parents demonstrated throughout his early years was a faith he tried to
emulate throughout his life. When being given the last rites his face visibly
changed from one showing tension and pain to one relaxed and peaceful. For
this and his visits we will be forever grateful to Father Patrick GUIDON, OMI,
of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Private religious services were held for
the immediate family with interment at San Fernando II Cemetery. Memorial
contributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic School, 205 W. Huisache
Avenue, San Antonio, 78212.

GLORIA VILLA CADENA
GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
GLORIA VILLA CADENA GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SCHOLARSHIP
FUND was conceived as an idea to involve the relatives of Los Bexareños.
This is an important tool to get our children and grandchildren, nephews
and nieces to participate in genealogy research.
! THE GVCGH SCHOLARSHIP FUND is available to college students who are
attending (or will attend) an accredited college or university in Bexar County in
the 2015-2016 school year.
! THE REQUIREMENTS ARE RELATIVELY SIMPLE. An LBGHS member OR any
relative of an LBGHS member in good standing OR any student in Bexar County
who is attending an accredited college or university (including students
graduating high school in May 2015 and will be attending an accredited college or
university) may apply for a GVCGH SCHOLARSHIP. They are required to fill out a
four generation pedigree chart and write a 750 word essay on one or more of their
ancestors. The emphasis is on, but not limited to, Hispanic lineages. Their entries
will be judged on how much of the pedigree chart they were able to complete and
the content of their essay.
! THERE WILL BE TWO 2015 WINNERS. Each year two winners will be selected.
One female student and one male student. They will each win a $500.00 scholarship, which will be submitted directly to the college or university they are attending.
! THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM. Los Bexareños Genealogical and Historical Society has members in eleven states and in México and England. If you are a
relative of an LBGHS member, and you are a student attending an accredited
college or university anywhere in the world, you may apply. ✥

Extraordinaire
os Bexareños Genealogical and Historical Society is
fortunate to have Dennis Moreno and Yolanda
Patiño as members and dedicated volunteers. They
are always ready to help anyone with their family research.
People are often referred to them—whether they need help
in starting their genealogy, or they've come to that
preverbal "brick wall." Sometimes the load becomes heavy
with all the requests for assistance, especially now that Los
Bexareños is getting more exposure. Los Bexareños is well
known throughout Texas, as well as outside the United
States. An individual from Florida was recently referred to
Los Bexareños by Ancestry.com. Apparently, they had
exhausted all their resources. That person is now a member
of Los Bexareños. ! There are many experienced members in the Society.
Los Bexareños needs others who are willing to step-up-tothe-plate. Please share your expertise, your knowledge,
and your time to help Dennis and Yolanda with the heavy
load. Contact Dennis Moreno or Yolanda Patiño if you
think you can help out. Maybe you have access to a good
resource, or you're knowledgeable of a particular region, or
you personally possess information that would be helpful
to others. Whatever your area of expertise may be, just
share that with Dennis and Yolanda so that they have more
resources and manpower at their disposal.
! Dennis and Yolanda are at the Resource Center every
Saturday, except for the first Saturday of the month. They
are a very valuable asset to our organization. Thank you
Dennis and Yolanda for all that you do for Los Bexareños! ✥

LEONOR DELGADO AND THE DAR
BY:
Mary Anne Curray
For Los Bexareños Genealogical and Historical Society
read last month’s Message from the Editor and
the article linked to it, regarding General Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, with keen interest and
thoroughly enjoyed it. I want to add my little Tejano
contribution to the Revolutionary War discussion. My ancestor, Leonor Delgado, was a member of one
of the Canary Islander families who in 1731 founded
the civil settlement Villa de San Fernando de Béjar
which together with the Presidio de Béjar and the
Misión San Antonio de Valero (the Álamo) combined
to form the genesis of what is now San Antonio,
Texas. I
LEONOR DELGADO. The response I received was
that it was the policy of the DAR to use married
names, so let it be known that our Leonor Delgado,
the first Hispanic woman to be a patriot of the DAR
is registered as LEONOR FLORES. The registrar
did allow that my certificate to read Leonor Delgado but her official patriot name still remains
Leonor Flores. The reason she has a supplemental
certificate is that I came into the DAR on my Irish
ancestor and patriot, Robert Hamilton. Subsequent
certificates are considered supplemental. Somehow,
I got a chuckle out of all of this!
! After she became the widow of the cattle breeder
Juan José Flores de Ábrego y Valdés, she donated
cattle, horses, mules, sheep and goats from her Rancho de San José de los Álamos to General Bernardo
de Gálvez during the American Revolutionary War. ! I submitted the necessary paperwork to the
Daughters of the American Revolution on Leonor
Delgado’s behalf because I wanted a Hispanic woman to be a member of the DAR. The paperwork
was accepted, making her a patriot of the DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. I think
she may be the first Hispanic woman to become a
member of the DAR. When I was sent the certificate, her name was written as LEONOR FLORES. I
wrote the Registrar noting the error --- she was
P.S. I might add that her husband Juan José Flores
de Ábrego’s brand was the first registered cattle
brand in what is now the state of Texas.

Message from the Editor
he story of Bernardo de Gálvez is
one that must be told to our children, our family and friends, and to
everyone we meet.
! Every household of every citizen of
the United States with Native PeopleSpanish-Mexican-Tejano ancestors should
display a picture of the individual who
Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid,
may be responsible for securing the Viscount of Galveston and Count of Gálvez
independence of the United States, or at the very least for giving the
colonies a fighting chance to win the American Revolutionary War
(1775-1783).
! The following link is a must read:
T
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/guillermo-fesser/united-states-of-spain_b_5618526.html
! All Hispanics should be proud of their ancestor’s contribution to
the independence of this great nation. Without their selfless acts, first
cattle drives (yes, first cattle drives from this area), monetary
contributions and much more, there might not be a United Sates of
America.
! Be proud of your ancestors. Spread the word.
