TAURANGA GIRLS’ COLLEGE

Tauranga
Girls’
College
Message from the Principal
Dear Parents
Term 1 is nearly over and what a
very busy, very productive term it
has been! And with Summer
Tournament week under way in
Week 10 and our Parent /Teacher
evening coming up for parents of
junior students in Week 11 there
is still much to do, and to share,
with our community.
Congratulations to all students
who have achieved personal
goals in these first weeks of 2016
in whatever dimension of the
college they have been involved
in.
For the Parent/Teacher Evening
the on-line booking system for
appointments is open and
parents are encouraged to take
the opportunity for a face to face
discussion with teachers. Our
learning environment is at its best
when there is a three way
partnership of support between
parent, student and teacher all
focussed on the best outcomes.
Term 1: positive, successful,
establishing a culture of
involvement and healthy
competition, has been ably led by
our senior student office holders,
prefects and house captains,
giving everyone the opportunity
to explore and participate. InterHouse competition has been
fierce, via all of our whole school
athletic events, lunchtime
competitions and challenges and
the leader board in the hall for
the House Shield has changed
positions on a regular basis all
through the term.
Term 1 also sees a significant
change in our senior leadership
and there is a very special
acknowledgement to be made of
a staff member who has been
with us for nearly thirty years and
whose leadership and
contribution to our college has
been exemplary. As Mrs Leonie
Summerville finishes her role as
Deputy Principal with us I thank
her on behalf of staff, students
and the wider community of
Tauranga Girls’ College for
everything she has done to
ensure the success and
wellbeing of everyone here.
Leonie has involved herself
tirelessly with every aspect of the
college, in and out of the
classroom and her wisdom,
energy and dedication have been
much appreciated and will be
greatly missed.
I wish everyone a restful,
restorative and relaxing term
break as we look forward to being
back into the busyness of Term 2
on Monday 02 May, fit and ready
to pick up all the opportunities
here on the journey towards
“empowering tomorrow’s
women”.

Year 9 Diligence
Camp
Dates: June (to be advised)
Venue: Finlay Park, Cambridge
Year 9 & 10 Parent
Teacher Evening
Interim Reports for the whole
school were issued on Thursday 24
March.
A Year 9 and Year 10 ParentTeacher Evening will be held on
Wednesday 13 April 4.30-7.00pm.
Bookings will be available online
This camp will be by invitation
only. Students will be nominated
by tutor teachers and classroom
teachers. It is for students who
display the school values of
Respect, Participation and Pride.
The girls that work hard in class,
wear their uniform with pride
and do not have any detentions.
The girls have already been
introduced to the idea at an
assembly. This is an excellent
incentive to the Year 9 students
and a great reward for those
girls who are “getting it right”. In
the past we have taken about 90
students.
The cost of this camp is around
$100-120. To keep costs down
we ask parents to assist with
cooking and some supervision.
Performing Arts:
Drama
On Friday 04 March, the Performing
Arts and English Departments took
45 keen thespians to the POP UP
GLOBE in Auckland. This was a
once in a lifetime opportunity, for
the girls to experience Shakespeare
performed as it was intended, on a
thrust stage in an outdoors theatre!
The POP UP GLOBE is an exact
replica on the Globe in London and
we are very privileged to host the
theatre here in NZ. The girls and
teachers thoroughly enjoyed the
performance of “Romeo and Juliet”
and nearly three hours standing as
groundings was rewarded with
loads actor/audience interaction
and an up-close and personal
experience.

Kickstart Toastmaster’s Club is
offering a group of students
from Tauranga Girls’ College the
opportunity to participate in the
Toastmasters International
Youth Leadership programme.
The 2016 Jacket Committee,
Chantelle Bartlett, Paige
McGarva and Selena Wright
have been working tirelessly
since the end of Term 4, 2015 to
design and recreate the annual
Tauranga Girls’ Year 13 leavers’
jackets. After a lengthy process
from design to offshore
production and finally delivery,
they were pleased to announce
the arrival of the first jacket
order of 87 Jackets earlier this
term. The school’s mascot- The
TGC Tiger, has been
incorporated into the theme of
the jackets, and the wellthought-out design makes the
girls who wear the jacket look
very tidy and unified as the
leader year group of the school.
The second order of jackets is
due before the end of Term 1.
There has been a very positive
reaction from students and staff
alike and students can be seen
daily proudly sporting their new
and exclusive item of uniform.
students have embarked on
eight weeks of training to get
them familiar with the many
aspects of school librarianship.
We hope they learn useful
things, make new friends and
above all, have some fun! We
appreciate their enthusiastic
input and enjoy collaborating
with them in making the school
library a place which is appealing
and helpful.

TAURANGA GIRLS’ COLLEGE
Leonie Summerville, Deputy Principal
Leonie Summerville joined Tauranga Girls’ College in the role of Deputy Principal in September
1987. Her leaving will be felt across the whole school community - Leonie is a people person, a very
skilled and experienced communicator and she will be missed by all. Her love of the arts, music and
sport and her involvement in all of these at TGC have made her a very special person to all students,
staff and whanau who share those passions. Leonie’s dedication to all aspects of the college has
made her an extremely valuable and valued staff member, colleague and friend.
Comments from staff include:
Lovely Leonie always there, always smiling, always gracious, kind and caring. Long hours spent
willingly in support of staff and students. It has been wonderful to share Leonie’s surname - many times
parents tell me how she knows their whanau and how supportive and caring she has been to them and
their children and at times their mokopuna----Aroha is a word that many use when talking about her.
Thanks for all the support you gave to the library & librarians over your many years at TGC “A teacher
and colleague who cares, supports and applauds the efforts of those around her.” We will miss her
grace and kindness to all. A kind, positive role model who always looked for the good in the girls.
We wish Leonie well on the next adventure in her life pathway and know that she will always be part
of Tauranga Girls’ College.
