COOL-THERM NEWS
the chiller and air conditioning experts
WELCOME
from the MD
We put a very high emphasis at CoolTherm on health and safety at work.
We were therefore very proud to learn
that we have successfully achieved
accreditation under the international
OHSAS 18001 standard.
In one of those ironic little twists
that life sometimes throws up, I am
writing this with my leg in plaster following a fall while working at home.
It is a timely reminder to take extra
care when working at height. At home
or at work, height is always risky - take
it from me!
In this newsletter we report on
another dramatic fall - this time in the
level of warranty claims over the past
year in relation to Turbomiser chillers
(see back page). It is striking evidence
of the strides that have been made in
manufacturing systems and logistics,
in ensuring that plant is delivered to
site in pristine condition.
The astonishing reliability of Turbomiser is one of the factors behind a
very healthy order book for the chillers
as we entered the New Year.
The projects span commercial buildings, process cooling, data centres and
hospitals. It is testimony to the growing reputation of Turbomiser technology, which simply can’t be beaten!

Cool-Therm launches consultancy to
advise on high efficiency ac solutions
Cool-Therm has launched a new company to
specialise in the design and management of specialist low carbon, high efficiency air conditioning
systems and energy audits.
Cool-Therm (Consultants) Limited, headed by
directors Alex Strong and Rob Young, will offer
a nationwide service from the company’s four
locations in Bristol, Cardiff, Reading and Wolverhampton.
Alex Strong said: “With sharp increases in energy
prices, running costs for air conditioning are now
a major issue. Clients want to ensure that new
and existing systems operate as efficiently as possible, to minimise the cost of ownership over the
lifetime of plant.”
The company will also offer F-Gas compliance
support for end users and facility management
companies.
Rob Young said: “The focus will be solving
challenging applied air conditioning design and
management issues, harnessing our considerable
experience in a wide range of technologies –
including advanced heat pumps, VRV/VRF systems
and high efficiency chiller-based solutions. We can
also draw on our extensive experience of applying
Turbomiser technology, which offers unprecedented efficiency and reductions in running costs.”
The company will specialise in tailored improvement and retrofit schemes for both DX air conditioning and chilled water systems, for industrial
process applications, data centres and commercial
buildings.
It will also provide comprehensive TM44 energy
audits on existing systems, to highlight cost-effective savings, and offer Carbon Footprint Assessments and refrigerant management, F-Gas and
F-gas phase-down support.

Cool-Therm achieves OHSAS 18001
Following a recent assessment, we are proud to have achieved
accreditation to the internationally-recognised BS OHSAS 18001
Occupational Health and Safety Management standard. Seen
as the world’s most recognised occupational health and safety
benchmark, it is part of Cool-Therm’s ongoing commitment to being a safe contractor, and ensuring the safety of staff, customers
and the public at all times.

NEWS
In brief
Dramatic fall in warranty
claims reported
Warranty claims for Turbomiser have
fallen dramatically – from a total of
Euros 15,000 in 2012 to just Euros
1,500 in 2013, an order of magnitude
lower. Ken Strong says: “This puts in
perspective the reliability of oil free
centrifugal compressor technology.
There may have been some issues
soon after Turbomiser was launched
back in 2007. However, since then
reliability has improved every year,
resulting in an incredibly low warranty
claim rate of 0.0056% of sales. It’s not
only the exceptional quality control
at the factory which has made this
possible, but also the ROI after years
of training our engineers in how to
service and maintain this high technology equipment.”

HFO Turbocor unit attracts interest at ACR
A cut-away version of a new HFO
Turbocor compressor attracted visitors on Cool-Therm’s stand at the
ACR Show, held at the NEC in February. Cool-Therm also announced
the launch of its recent distribution
agreement with Clima Tech, for the
company’s high specification air
handling units in the UK.
A planned seminar presentation
on Dynamic Noise Control technology unfortunately had to be cancelled, after Cool-Therm’s
md, Ken Strong, suffered a broken leg after falling while working at home. “If only I had done
a full risk assessment, as set-out in OHAS 18001, it wouldn’t have happened!,” said Ken. “It’s a
timely reminder that working at height always carries risk - whether at home or at work.”

Cool-Therm has had a great start to the year, with
orders for several Turbomiser projects across the
country.
It includes a turnkey chiller replacement for IXYS,
formerly Westcode Semi-Conductors, in Chippenham. The project is for replacement of aging
R22-based plant with new Turbomisers, and follows successful completion of a similar installation
carried out for IXYS last year.
Headed by Larry Barlow and Rob Young, the twophase project starts with installation of two Turbomiser TMA 350kW packaged air-cooled chillers
in April, followed by installation of a Turbomiser
TMA 260kW air-cooled chiller later in the year.
Meanwhile, the estates department of the University of Nottingham has ordered a Turbomiser
TMA 320kW packaged air-cooled chiller, for
installation at its Queens’ Medical Centre. Martin
Sharman is heading up the project.
Continuing the healthcare theme, an order from
Salisbury Hospital NHS Trust for a turnkey project
involves removal of four Hitachi remote aircooled condenser chillers and replacement with
Turbomiser TSE 350kW plant room chillers, with
capacity-matched RCE air-cooled condensers. The
project, being led by Rob Young and Larry Barlow,
is valued at £440,000.
Meanwhile, other recent orders include:
• A Geoclima air-cooled propane chiller, for
installation by Climate Heating and Plumbing
Services at Lymedale Business Centre for Staffordshire County Council;
• A Turbomiser TMA 300kW packaged aircooled chiller for CGI at Bridgend Science
Park, as part of a major contract at the site
headed by Rob Strong.
