All work performed by the General Contractor shall be performed in accordance
with recognized standards of good workmanship. The General Contractor is to
provide all labor, materials, equipment and services necessary as required by
the drawings to provide a complete and finished space. This includes all
architectural, electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation trades. All materials
will be of first quality and shall meet recognized standards of quality for their
generic group. All methods of construction and assembly shall comply with
manufacturer's recommendations.
The contractor shall work in a clean, organized and professional manner and
shall be responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the site (space)
during construction.

Prior to demolition of columns the contractor shall field measure each of
type of existing column surround and pilaster to confirm all dimensions
and profiles. Contractor may remove on column and/or pilaster of each
type for use in replicating columns.

780 CMR - 8th Edition and all local, state. and/or federal laws, bylaws, and/or
ordinances, the MA Architectural Access Board 521 CMR and the Americans

PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1
GENERAL PROVISIONS
A. Attention is directed to the General And Supplemental Conditions of the Contract and all Sections within
Division 1 - General Requirements which are hereby made a part of this Section of the Specifications.

SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
1. Demolition and removal of selected portions of building.
1.3
DEFINITIONS
A. Remove: Detach items from existing construction and legally dispose of them off-site, unless indicated to
be removed and salvaged or removed and reinstalled.
B. Existing to Remain: Existing items of construction that are not to be removed and that are not otherwise
indicated to be removed, removed and salvaged, or removed and reinstalled.
1.4
SUBMITTALS
A. Landfill Records: Indicate receipt and acceptance of hazardous wastes by a landfill facility licensed to
accept hazardous wastes.
1.5
QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Standards: Comply with ANSI A10.6 and NFPA 241.

PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Owner will occupy portions of building immediately adjacent to selective demolition area. Conduct
selective demolition so Owner's operations will not be disrupted.
B. Notify Architect of discrepancies between existing conditions and Drawings before proceeding with
selective demolition.
C. Hazardous Materials: It is not expected that hazardous materials will be encountered in the Work.
1. If materials suspected of containing hazardous materials are encountered, do not disturb; immediately
notify Architect and Owner. Owner will remove hazardous materials under a separate contract.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS (Not Used)
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1
EXAMINATION
A. Survey existing conditions and correlate with requirements indicated to determine extent of selective
demolition required.
3.2
PREPARATION
A. Temporary Facilities: Provide temporary barricades and other protection required to prevent injury to
people and damage to adjacent buildings and facilities to remain.
1. Provide temporary weather protection, during interval between selective demolition of existing
construction on exterior surfaces installation of new materials, to prevent water leakage and damage
to structure and interior areas.
2. Protect walls, ceilings, floors, and other existing finish work that are to remain or that are exposed
during selective demolition operations.
3. Cover and protect furniture, furnishings, and equipment that have not been removed.
3.3
SELECTIVE DEMOLITION, GENERAL
A. Demolish and remove existing construction only to the extent required by new construction and as
indicated. Use methods required to complete the Work within limitations of governing regulations and as
follows:
1. Neatly cut openings and holes plumb, square, and true to dimensions required. Use cutting methods
least likely to damage construction to remain or adjoining construction. Use hand tools or small
power tools designed for sawing or grinding, not hammering and chopping, to minimize disturbance
of adjacent surfaces. Temporarily cover openings to remain.
2. Cut or drill from the exposed or finished side into concealed surfaces to avoid marring existing finished
surfaces.
3. Dispose of demolished items and materials promptly.
B. Existing Items to Remain: Protect construction indicated to remain against damage and soiling during
selective demolition.
3.4
SELECTIVE DEMOLITION PROCEDURES FOR SPECIFIC MATERIALS
A. Concrete: Demolish in sections. Cut concrete full depth at junctures with construction to remain and at
regular intervals, using power-driven saw, then remove concrete between saw cuts.
3.5
DISPOSAL OF DEMOLISHED MATERIALS
A. Remove demolished materials from Project site and legally dispose of them in an EPA-approved landfill.
1. Do not allow demolished materials to accumulate on-site.
2. Remove and transport debris in a manner that will prevent spillage on adjacent surfaces and areas.
B. Disposal: Transport demolished materials off Owner's property and legally dispose of them.
3.6
CLEANING
A. Clean adjacent structures and improvements of dust, dirt, and debris caused by selective demolition
operations. Return adjacent areas to condition existing before selective demolition operations began.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Trim materials should be stored on a flat and level surface on a full shipping pallet. Handle materials to
prevent damage to product edges and corners. Store materials under a protective covering to prevent
jobsite dirt and residue from collecting on the boards.
1.6 WARRANTY
A. Provide manufacturer's 25 year warranty against defects in manufacturing that cause the products to rot,
corrode, delaminate, or excessively swell from moisture.
PART-2 PRODUCTS
2.01 MATERIALS

B. PVC Trim and Moldings: Expanded rigid cellular PVC material by Kleer Lumber, Inc. Material shall be
produced from PVC resins, recycled PVC and have an integral white color. Composite material is not
acceptable.
C. Physical Properties: PVC material with a small-cell microstructure.
1. Recycled Content: Minimum 19 percent pre-consumer recycled content, independently certified by
Scientific Certification Systems (SCS).
2. Density: 0.55 grams per cubic centimeter.

16. Environmental: Kleer sheets are extruded using low toxicity organotin heat stabilizers with minimal
migration from PVC. Tin stabilizers added during formulation have minimal volatilization during normal
processing conditions as well as under severe use conditions. Kleer sheet and Kleer PVC trim are
free of conventional lead, barium, cadmium and zinc compounds and pose low risk to manufacturers,
sheet processors, consumers and aquatic life. Materials are suitable for use where foods contact
surfaces. Materials are recyclable.

2.02 ACCESSORY PRODUCTS
A. Fasteners:
4. Use fasteners designed for wood trim and wood siding (thinner shank, blunt point, full round head).
Fastener should have sufficient flexural and tensile strength to resist bending.
5. Use a highly durable fastener such as stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized.
6. The fasteners should be long enough to penetrate the solid wood substrate a minimum of 1 1/2".
7. Use standard nail guns with a pressure setting between 70 psi and 100 psi. The recommended
pressure depends on the type of gun, type of nail, ambient temperature, and the substrate. Care
should be taken not to overdrive the nail into the material.
8. Use minimum 2 fasteners per every framing member for trimboards applications. Trimboards 8" or
wider, as well as sheets, will require additional fasteners.
9. Fasteners must be installed no more than 2" from the end of each board.
10. Avoid fastening trimboards over hollow or uneven areas. Fasten trimboards onto flat, solid substrates.
11. 3/8" and 1/2" sheet product is not intended to be ripped into trim pieces. These profiles must be glued
to a substrate and mechanically fastened.
B. Adhesives:
1. Glue all PVC trimboard to PVC trimboard joints such as long fascia runs, etc. with manufactures
recommended adhesive, a cellular pvc cement, to prevent joint separation.
2. The glue joint should be secured with a fastener and/or fastened on each side of the joint to allow
adequate bonding time.
3. Surfaces to be glued should be smooth, clean and in complete contact with each other.
4. To bond PVC trimboard to other substrates, various adhesives may be used. Consult adhesive
manufacturer to determine suitability.
C. Sealants:
1. Use urethane, polyurethane or acrylic based sealants without silicone.
2.3 FINISHES
A. PREPARATION:
1. Surface to be painted is clean, dry, and free of dirt, loose or peeling paint, mildew, chalk, grease and
any other surface contaminants before paint application.
2. Use 100% acrylic latex or 100% acrylic latex with urethane additive paint with a light reflective value
equal to or greater than 55 units.
3. Follow the paint manufacturer's application recommendations.
4. Nail holes may be finished with a two component methacrylate, poly urethane, polymer, or acrylic
based caulk, or painted over. Use a caulk that is UV resistant.
PART-3 EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Manufacturers instructions:
1. Comply with manufacturer's product catalog installation instructions and product technical bulletin
instructions.
B. Cutting:
1. Use carbide tipped blades designed to cut wood work well. Avoid fine tooth metal cutting blades.
C. Drilling
1. Use standard woodworking drills. Do not use drills made for normal rigid pvc.
2. Periodic removal of shavings from the drill hole may be necessary.
D. Nail Location
1. Use 2 fasteners per every framing member for trimboard applications.
2. Trimboards over 12" or wider, as well as sheets, will require additional fasteners.
3. Fasteners must be installed no more than 2" from the end of each board.
E. Fastener Schedule:
1. Along Length of Board: Fasten at 16 inches (406.4 mm) on center, maximum.
2. Within Width of Board: 4 inches (101.6 mm) on center, maximum.

Architectural Fiberglass Column Cover
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A. Drawings, conditions of the contract and Division 1 Specifications sections, apply to work of this
section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes: Custom architectural fiberglass reinforced polymer (FRP) column covers and
columns to match existing dimensions and profiles.
1.3 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
A. Installed architectural fiberglass column covers and fastening systems shall be designed, engineered,
fabricated, and installed to conform to the state codes, local codes, and the Architect's design.
1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. Shop Drawings: Shall illustrate dimensions, adjacent construction, materials, thickness, fabrications
details, required clearances, field jointing, tolerances, colors, finishes, methods of support,
attachments, anchorage to substrates, integration of components, and list of part numbers that
coordinate with labeled architectural column covers.
B. Submit current valid third party product Listing and Labeling from International Code Council
(ICC)-sanctioned authority to be affixed to all products manufactured and delivered to the jobsite as
required per the 2009 International Building Code (IBC). ICC-sanctioned Listing and Labeling Program
shall be in place at bid time and state compliance with Flame Spread Index requirements stipulated in
the 2009 IBC, section 2612. Manufactured products without Listing and Labeling Program at bid time
will not be considered.
C. Submit manufacturer's current valid certification with The Certified Composites Technician (CCT)
program created by the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA).
D. Submit manufacturer's internal Quality Control & Assurance Procedures based upon provisions
published in the "Guidelines and Recommended Practices for Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic
Architectural Products" upon request.
E. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's product data and installation instructions.
F.
Product Samples: Submit minimum 3-inch x 5-inch samples in specified color, texture and finish when
applicable.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Obtain architectural fiberglass column covers from a single source manufacturer that has the ability
and resources to comply with the requirements and schedule of the project.
B. Manufacturer's ICC-sanctioned Listing and Labeling Program shall include site visits to manufacturing
facility by third party testing authority witnessing compliance with manufacturing procedures and
Listing and Labeling Program.
A.
Manufacturer to comply with Quality Control & Assurance Procedures, and fabricate architectural
fiberglass based upon provisions published in the "Guidelines and Recommended Practices for
Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Architectural Products".
B. Inspect each molded piece to ensure that it complies with specified requirements, including nominal
dimensions.
1.6 MANUFACTURER'S QUALIFICATIONS
A. Manufacturer: Provide products manufactured by a firm specializing in the manufacture of fiberglass
architectural ornamentation, in the United States with a minimum of ten (10) years experience.
B. All products manufactured shall carry ICC-sanctioned Listing and Labeling per 2009 IBC.
C. Manufacturer shall demonstrate current valid certification and participation in the CCT program and
fabricate material based upon provisions published in the "Guidelines and Recommended Practices
for Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Architectural Products".
D. Provide a list of projects comparable in size, scope, and complexity as indicated, upon request.
E. Provide verification that architectural fiberglass column cover meets or exceeds products specified.
1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Handle, store and transport architectural fiberglass column covers according to manufacturer's
recommendations and in a manner that prevents damage.
B. Protect architectural fiberglass column covers from damage by retaining shipping protection in place
until installation.
C. Damage Responsibility: Except for damage caused by others, the installer is responsible for chipping,
cracking, or other damage to fiberglass fabrications, after delivery to the jobsite and until installation is
completed and inspected and approved by the Architect or owner's representative.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Warrant architectural fiberglass column covers to be free from defect due to materials and
workmanship for ten (10) years.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.2 PATTERNS/MOLDS
A. Custom Pattern/Mockups: Patterns and mockups shall be hand carved and/or CNC machined by
skilled pattern makers with minimum of ten (10) years experience with architectural elements. Patterns
& mockups shall be available at manufacturing facility for architect's inspection and approval before
molds are produced.
B. Custom Molds: Molds shall be produced with ample layers of tooling resin, tooling gel-coat, glass
fibers and/or flexible rubber by skilled mold makers with minimum of ten (10) years experience with
architectural elements. Produced molds shall have rigidity and thickness to prevent distortion and
deflection of molded architectural fiberglass.
2.3 MATERIALS CHARACTERISTICS
A. MOLDED EXTERIOR SURFACE:, NPG-ISO polyester gel coat, 18 to 22 mils thick. Gel coat shall be
sandable grade for acceptance of finish paint. (Insert custom colored U-V inhibited gel coat when
custom gel coat finish is specified.)
B. BARRIER COAT: Specifically formulated backup polyester surface veil 18-20 mils thick to prevent
glass print through and ultimate Class A finish.
C. BACK UP LAMINATE:

Resin: Polyester resin shall be fire retardant, and meet Class 1 flame spread rating of 25 or less
and smoke density under 450 without the use of antimony trioxide as characterized by the
ASTM E-84 tunnel test at typical 1/8" glass mat laminate. General Purpose resin will not be
permitted.

Filler: Functional filler to be added to resin matrix to minimize shrinkage, add stiffness, control
opacity, add fire retardance, improve surface finish, minimize crazing, and control dimensional
stability from weather extremes.

fibers. Glass content approximately 20% to 30%.

A. Column cover halves shall be manufactured with sufficient butt joints to provide structural integrity and
shall be manufactured to accommodate construction adhesive, and align with adjoining half section.
(Insert custom engineered lap or reveal joint when specified.)
B. Column vertical joint shall be designed to accept polyester body filler for monolithic finish and field
painting. (Insert that column vertical joint shall be caulked when custom reveal joint detail is
specified.)
C. Column cover shaft half sections shall be manufactured as a single unit spanning entire height from
base to top of capital.
D. Column base shall be manufactured as a separate unit for column shaft height adjustment.

3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install architectural fiberglass column covers in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and
approved shop drawings.
B. Fiberglass column cover vertical joint shall be field finished and painted per manufacturer's
instructions for monolithic appearance.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Store materials not in use in tightly covered containers in well-ventilated areas with ambient temperatures

FIELD CONDITIONS
A. Apply paints only when temperature of surfaces to be painted and ambient air temperatures are between
50 and 95 deg F (10 and 35 deg C).
B. Do not apply exterior paints in snow, rain, fog, or mist; when relative humidity exceeds 85 percent; at
temperatures less than 5 deg F (3 deg C) above the dew point; or to damp or wet surfaces.

2.1
MANUFACTURERS
A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by one of the following or equal:
1. Benjamin Moore & Co.
2. PPG Architectural Finishes, Inc.
3. Sherwin-Williams Company (The).
2.2
PAINT, GENERAL
A. Products: Provide paint products as recommended by paint manufacture for substrates indicated.
B. Material Compatibility:
1. Provide materials for use within each paint system that are compatible with one another and
substrates indicated, under conditions of service and application as demonstrated by manufacturer,
based on testing and field experience.
2. For each coat in a paint system, provide products recommended in writing by manufacturers of
topcoat for use in paint system and on substrate indicated.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1
EXAMINATION
A. Examine substrates and conditions, with Applicator present, for compliance with requirements for maximum
moisture content and other conditions affecting performance of the Work.
B. Verify suitability of substrates, including surface conditions and compatibility with existing finishes and
primers.
C. Proceed with coating application only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
1. Application of coating indicates acceptance of surfaces and conditions.
3.2
PREPARATION
A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations in "MPI Manual" applicable to
substrates indicated.
3.3
APPLICATION
A. Apply paints according to manufacturer's written instructions and to recommendations in "MPI Manual."
1. Use applicators and techniques suited for paint and substrate indicated.
B. Apply paints to produce surface films without cloudiness, spotting, holidays, laps, brush marks, roller
tracking, runs, sags, ropiness, or other surface imperfections. Cut in sharp lines and color breaks.
3.4
FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Dry Film Thickness Testing: Owner may engage the services of a qualified testing and inspecting agency
to inspect and test paint for dry film thickness.
1. Contractor shall touch up and restore painted surfaces damaged by testing.
2. If test results show that dry film thickness of applied paint does not comply with paint manufacturer's
written recommendations, Contractor shall pay for testing and apply additional coats as needed to
provide dry film thickness that complies with paint manufacturer's written recommendations.
3.5
CLEANING AND PROTECTION
A. At end of each workday, remove rubbish, empty cans, rags, and other discarded materials from Project site.
B. After completing paint application, clean spattered surfaces. Remove spattered paints by washing,
scraping, or other methods. Do not scratch or damage adjacent finished surfaces.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1
MATERIALS
A. Cleaning Agents: Use cleaning materials and agents recommended by manufacturer or fabricator of the
surface to be cleaned. Do not use cleaning agents that are potentially hazardous to health or property or
that might damage finished surfaces.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1
FINAL CLEANING
A. Perform final cleaning. Conduct cleaning and waste-removal operations to comply with local laws and
ordinances and Federal and local environmental and antipollution regulations.
B. Cleaning: Employ experienced workers or professional cleaners for final cleaning. Clean each surface or
unit to condition expected in an average commercial building cleaning and maintenance program. Comply
with manufacturer's written instructions.
1. Complete the following cleaning operations before requesting inspection for certification of Substantial
of Project:
a. Remove tools, construction equipment, machinery, and surplus material from Project site.
b. Clean exposed exterior and interior hard-surfaced finishes to a dirt-free condition, free of stains,
films, and similar foreign substances. Avoid disturbing natural weathering of exterior surfaces.
Restore reflective surfaces to their original condition.
c. Clean transparent materials, glass windows. Remove glazing compounds and other noticeable,
vision-obscuring materials. Replace chipped or broken glass and other damaged transparent
materials. Polish glass, taking care not to scratch surfaces.
d. Remove labels that are not permanent.
e. Touch up and otherwise repair and restore marred, exposed finishes and surfaces. Replace
finishes and surfaces that cannot be satisfactorily repaired or restored or that already show
evidence of repair or restoration.
f. Clean plumbing fixtures to a sanitary condition, free of stains, including stains resulting from
water exposure.
g. Clean exposed surfaces of diffusers, registers, and grills.
h. Leave Project clean and ready for occupancy.

1.1
SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:

1. Division 01 Section "Temporary Facilities and Controls" for limitations and procedures governing
temporary use of Owner's facilities.
1.2
WORK COVERED BY CONTRACT DOCUMENTS
A. The Work of Project is defined by the Contract Documents and consists of the following:
1. Removal wood gymnasium flooring.
2. Installation of new rubber athletic flooring over wood sleepers and plywood subfloor.
1.3
ACCESS TO SITE
A. Contractor shall have limited use of Project site for construction.
B. Use of Site: Limit use of Project site to areas within the affected by the work of this contract. Do not
disturb portions of Project site beyond areas in which the Work is indicated.
C. Condition of Existing Building: Repair damage caused by construction operations.
1.4
COORDINATION WITH OCCUPANTS
A. Full Owner Occupancy: Owner will occupy the building during entire construction period. Cooperate with
Owner during construction operations to minimize conflicts and facilitate Owner usage. Perform the Work
so as not to interfere with Owner's day-to-day operations. Maintain existing exits unless otherwise
indicated.
1. Notify Owner not less than 72 hours in advance of activities that will affect Owner's operations.
1.5
WORK RESTRICTIONS
A. Work Restrictions, General: Comply with restrictions on construction operations.
B. Existing Utility Interruptions: Do not interrupt utilities serving facilities occupied by Owner unless permitted
under the following conditions:
1. Notify Owner not less than two days in advance of proposed utility interruptions.
C. Controlled Substances: Use of tobacco products and other controlled substances on Project site is not
permitted.
1.6
SPECIFICATION AND DRAWING CONVENTIONS
A. Specification Content: The Specifications use certain conventions for the style of language and the
intended meaning of certain terms, words, and phrases when used in particular situations. These
conventions are as follows:
1. Imperative mood and streamlined language are generally used in the Specifications. The words
"shall," "shall be," or "shall comply with," depending on the context, are implied where a colon (:) is
used within a sentence or phrase.
2. Specification requirements are to be performed by Contractor unless specifically stated otherwise.
B. Division 01 General Requirements: Requirements of Sections in Division 01 apply to the Work of all
Sections in the Specifications.
C. Drawing Coordination: Requirements for materials and products identified on Drawings are described in
detail in the Specifications. One or more of the following are used on Drawings to identify materials and
products:
1. Terminology: Materials and products are identified by the typical generic terms used in the individual
Specifications Sections.
2. Abbreviations: Materials and products are identified by abbreviations published as part of the U.S.
National CAD Standard and scheduled on Drawings.

3.3
CONSTRUCTION LAYOUT
A. Verification: Before proceeding to lay out the Work, verify layout information shown on Drawings, in
relation to the property survey and existing benchmarks. If discrepancies are discovered, notify Architect
promptly.
3.4
INSTALLATION
A. Locate the Work and components of the Work accurately, in correct alignment and elevation, as indicated.
1. Make vertical work plumb and make horizontal work level.
2. Where space is limited, install components to maximize space available for maintenance and ease of
removal for replacement.
3. Conceal pipes, ducts, and wiring in finished areas, unless otherwise indicated.
4. Maintain minimum headroom clearance of 96 inches (2440 mm) in occupied spaces and 90 inches
(2300 mm) in unoccupied spaces.
B. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations for installing products in
applications indicated.
C. Install products at the time and under conditions that will ensure the best possible results. Maintain
conditions required for product performance until Substantial Completion.
D. Attachment: Provide blocking and attachment plates and anchors and fasteners of adequate size and
number to securely anchor each component in place, accurately located and aligned with other portions of
the Work. Where size and type of attachments are not indicated, verify size and type required for load
conditions.
1. Mounting Heights: Where mounting heights are not indicated, mount components at heights directed
by Architect.
2. Coordinate installation of anchorages. Furnish setting drawings, templates, and directions for
installing anchorages, including sleeves, concrete inserts, anchor bolts, and items with integral
anchors, that are to be embedded in concrete or masonry. Deliver such items to Project site in time
for installation.
E. Joints: Make joints of uniform width. Where joint locations in exposed work are not indicated, arrange
joints for the best visual effect. Fit exposed connections together to form hairline joints.
3.5
CUTTING AND PATCHING
A. Cutting and Patching, General: Employ skilled workers to perform cutting and patching. Proceed with
cutting and patching at the earliest feasible time, and complete without delay.
1. Cut in-place construction to provide for installation of other components or performance of other
construction, and subsequently patch as required to restore surfaces to their original condition.
B. Protection: Protect in-place construction during cutting and patching to prevent damage. Provide
protection from adverse weather conditions for portions of Project that might be exposed during cutting and
patching operations.
C. Adjacent Occupied Areas: Where interference with use of adjoining areas or interruption of free passage
to adjoining areas is unavoidable, coordinate cutting and patching in accordance with requirements of
Division 01 Section "Summary."
D. Cutting: Cut in-place construction by sawing, drilling, breaking, chipping, grinding, and similar operations,
including excavation, using methods least likely to damage elements retained or adjoining construction. If
possible, review proposed procedures with original Installer; comply with original Installer's written
recommendations.
1. In general, use hand or small power tools designed for sawing and grinding, not hammering and
chopping. Cut holes and slots neatly to minimum size required, and with minimum disturbance of
adjacent surfaces. Temporarily cover openings when not in use.
2. Finished Surfaces: Cut or drill from the exposed or finished side into concealed surfaces.
3. Concrete: Cut using a cutting machine, such as an abrasive saw or a diamond-core drill.
4. Mechanical and Electrical Services: Cut off pipe or conduit in walls or partitions to be removed. Cap,
valve, or plug and seal remaining portion of pipe or conduit to prevent entrance of moisture or other
foreign matter after cutting.
5. Proceed with patching after construction operations requiring cutting are complete.
E. Patching: Patch construction by filling, repairing, refinishing, closing up, and similar operations following
performance of other work. Patch with durable seams that are as invisible as practicable. Provide
materials and comply with installation requirements specified in other Sections, where applicable.
1. Inspection: Where feasible, test and inspect patched areas after completion to demonstrate physical
integrity of installation.
2. Exposed Finishes: Restore exposed finishes of patched areas and extend finish restoration into
retained adjoining construction in a manner that will minimize evidence of patching and refinishing.
a. Clean piping, conduit, and similar features before applying paint or other finishing materials.
b. Restore damaged pipe covering to its original condition.
3. Floors and Walls: Where walls or partitions that are removed extend one finished area into another,
patch and repair floor and wall surfaces in the new space. Provide an even surface of uniform finish,
color, texture, and appearance. Remove in-place floor and wall coverings and replace with new
materials, if necessary, to achieve uniform color and appearance.
a. Where patching occurs in a painted surface, prepare substrate and apply primer and
intermediate paint coats appropriate for substrate over the patch, and apply final paint coat over
entire unbroken surface containing the patch. Provide additional coats until patch blends with
adjacent surfaces.
4. Ceilings: Patch, repair, or rehang in-place ceilings as necessary to provide an even-plane surface of
uniform appearance.
5. Exterior Building Enclosure: Patch components in a manner that restores enclosure to a weathertight
condition.
F. Cleaning: Clean areas and spaces where cutting and patching are performed. Remove paint, mortar, oils,
putty, and similar materials from adjacent finished surfaces.
3.6
PROGRESS CLEANING
A. Clean Project site and work areas daily, including common areas. Enforce requirements strictly. Dispose
of materials lawfully.
1. Comply with requirements in NFPA 241 for removal of combustible waste materials and debris.
B. Work Areas: Clean areas where work is in progress to the level of cleanliness necessary for proper
execution of the Work.
1. Remove liquid spills promptly.
2. Where dust would impair proper execution of the Work, broom-clean or vacuum the entire work area,
as appropriate.
C. Installed Work: Keep installed work clean. Clean installed surfaces according to written instructions of
manufacturer or fabricator of product installed, using only cleaning materials specifically recommended. If
specific cleaning materials are not recommended, use cleaning materials that are not hazardous to health
or property and that will not damage exposed surfaces.
D. Concealed Spaces: Remove debris from concealed spaces before enclosing the space.
E. Exposed Surfaces in Finished Areas: Clean exposed surfaces and protect as necessary to ensure
freedom from damage and deterioration at time of Substantial Completion.
F. During handling and installation, clean and protect construction in progress and adjoining materials already
in place. Apply protective covering where required to ensure protection from damage or deterioration at
Substantial Completion.
G. Clean and provide maintenance on completed construction as frequently as necessary through the
remainder of the construction period. Adjust and lubricate operable components to ensure operability
without damaging effects.
3.7
STARTING AND ADJUSTING
A. Start equipment and operating components to confirm proper operation. Remove malfunctioning units,
replace with new units, and retest.
B. Adjust equipment for proper operation. Adjust operating components for proper operation without binding.
C. Test each piece of equipment to verify proper operation. Test and adjust controls and safeties. Replace
damaged and malfunctioning controls and equipment.
3.8
CORRECTION OF THE WORK
A. Repair or remove and replace defective construction. Restore damaged substrates and finishes.
1. Repairing includes replacing defective parts, refinishing damaged surfaces, touching up with matching
materials, and properly adjusting operating equipment.
B. Restore permanent facilities used during construction to their specified condition.
C. Remove and replace damaged surfaces that are exposed to view if surfaces cannot be repaired without
visible evidence of repair.
D. Repair components that do not operate properly. Remove and replace operating components that cannot
be repaired.
E. Remove and replace chipped, scratched, and broken glass or reflective surfaces.
