It has been a whirlwind of activity to this point, starting with writing an article to be included in the Alberta Golfer magazine for their 25th Anniversary edition. I also wrote the monthly 1st Tee eNewsletter column and President's reports for the Executive Committee. Next step? A journalist perhaps. I also chaired the monthly Executive Committee meetings, the annual Spring Meeting, weekly conference calls with Golf House, Personnel meetings and the Annual Fall Executive Committee Retreat. OK then, perhaps a public speaker? Well no. I was a member of the Provincial Council with Golf Canada but admit that the thrill of being in Vancouver the week before the Winter Olympics was amazing. The positive atmosphere was conducive for great dialogue and shared learning at the meetings I attended with my colleagues from other Provinces. The same can be said for the semi annual meeting with Golf Canada in November at Glen Abbey. The summer season was packed with Tournaments. Hosting the Media Day at RedTail Landing was phenomenal. Seeing all that great Alberta talent at the Sun Life Financial Men’s Amateur was impressive to say the least. I also witnessed valiant attempts by the Junior Girls trying to qualify for Canadian Nationals, JAC and Ryder Cup team positions at the Frank Lindsay Junior Girls Championship at the Glendale. In spite of torrential downpours and course closures that resulted in team selections after only 18 holes of tournament play. That being said, we can be very proud of the Junior Ladies Team that I had the opportunity to accompany to the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship in Ontario. They were amazing ambassadors for Alberta Golf. A highlight of the year for me was following up on the recommendation arising at the Spring Meeting in High River to review Alberta Golf's current leadership model and structure. An extensive RFP process took place resulting in the hiring of a consultant named Tammy Oberik who you may remember from the Alberta Women’s Golf Summit in 2009. By the beginning of September Tammy had completed 20 face to face or phone interviews with staff, Directors, Associate Directors and Volunteers, asking for their views of the issues and ideas about possible solutions. I was one of the interviewees and must say that given the types of questions and conversation I looked forward to Tammy's initial report which she presented at the Executive Committee Retreat in late September. The Executive Committee determined the next steps in this process and the full report will be presented by Tammy to the Board of Directors at the Fall Meeting. Rather than go on about all of the Alberta Golf activities in 2010, I would like to move on to expressing how grateful I am for having had this opportunity. As President and CEO of the Alberta Golf Association I could not have had such a comprehensive experience without the able assistance and guidance from Brent Ellenton and his staff, the great cooperation from the Zone Chairs and Committee Chairs, as well as the Associate Directors and Volunteers. I would like to thank our Membership, as well as the Staff at the Member Clubs, for their support of golf across Alberta. Thank you all so much. Anne Ward Neville Alberta Golf President and CEO 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 1 Alberta Golf Industries Association Report During the last year Alberta Golf has continued to play a key role as an active and supporting member of the Alberta Golf Industry Association (AGIA). The AGIA is a group of representatives from all provincial golf associations brought together to deal with issues that impact the entire golf industry. The AGIA is comprised of representatives from Alberta Golf, PGA of Alberta, National Golf Course Owners Association and the Alberta Golf Superintendents Association. The issue the AGIA has been working on is the City of Calgary’s Notice of Motion to implement a pesticide bylaw. The politicians who are pushing for a pesticide bylaw would like to see a total ban on pesticide use. If golf course superintendents lose pesticides as a tool in their Integrated Pest Management tool box, golf course conditions will suffer. AGIA’s position is that because there are no cost effective proven alternatives to pesticides not only would the quality of golf course conditions suffer, but the cost of maintaining golf courses would increase significantly and likely reduce the length of the golf season. All of these issues would have the potential to negatively impact the future of golf in Alberta. As an update, at the December 14, 2009 City of Calgary Council Meeting a motion to file the pesticide bylaw was passed. By approving the motion to file, work on the pesticide bylaw was effectively ceased. However, the pesticide bylaw can be re-tabled for future debate anytime in the future. The AGIA has spent the last year working together with municipal politicians and their administrations offering the knowledge and expertise of our industry leaders in the areas of agronomics, and integrated pest management. During the many discussions with politicians and administration, the AGIA has continued to show support for a science based pesticide bylaw that would see pesticides used on golf courses only by licensed applicators, Integrated Pest Management practitioners with enhanced communication and record keeping. The AGIA plans to provide continued assistance to municipal and the provincial government in the form of leadership and education. Ultimately, the goal for this initiative is to provide a provincial template for pest management use that will strengthen environmental stewardship efforts and continue to provide the necessary tools to sustain the future of golf in Alberta. James Beebe AGIA Chairman 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 2 Handicap and Course Rating Committee Report 2010 was an extremely busy year for the Handicap & Course Rating Committee. The Committee was comprised of the following Volunteers and staff: Provincial Director – Shirley Fowler South Zone Captain – Darrell Laidlaw Calgary Zone Captain – Howie Jaquish Central Zone Captain – Jack Brooks Edmonton Zone Captain – Janice Lamarre North Zone Captain – Ken Lyle Alberta Golf Staff – Jack Lane The Committee met via teleconference 4 times in 2010 and maintained communication via email throughout the year. A special thanks to Borden Woytkiw who helped with entering rating data into the course rating software. Also a special thanks to Stan Prime who resigned in 2010 for his commitment to course ratings over his tenure with Alberta Golf. RCGA Network The RCGA Network continues to be a great member service and support was provided to both clubs and members who required it. The Zone Captains were able to enter the course rating data into the USGA software and send the completed file into Golf House. From there Jack Lane entered the updated course rating information into the RCGA Network for handicap purposes and sent official letters and course handicap tables to the clubs. This process seemed to work very well and improved the accuracy of the rating information and efficiency of updating the RCGA Network. We were also able to compile the various course rating schedules into one master list in 2010. This will help us plan the number of courses to be rated more appropriately in the years to come. National Course Rating Seminar Golf Canada hosted a National Course Rating Seminar on April 9th and 10th. Janice Lamarre and Borden Woytkiw both made the trip to Ontario and represented Alberta Golf at the seminar. It was an informative two days for our experienced course raters. Handicap Seminars Alberta Golf conducts educational seminars for the RCGA Handicap System each year. A total of 4 Handicap Seminars were conducted in 2010: South Zone – Connaught GC on April 27th Calgary Zone – RCGA Golf Centre on May 19th Edmonton Zone – Highlands GC on May 5th North Zone – Pipestone GC on May 25th 82 participants attended and 43 clubs became RCGA Handicap System certified. A special thanks to Donald Stewart and Jack Lane for conducting the seminars. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 3 Course Rating Training Seminars Alberta Golf conducted several training seminars for course raters in 2010. Thanks to the Volunteers who helped conduct the seminars. They were very informative with both classroom and on-course training: Edmonton & Central Zones – Lacombe on May 10th was attended by 20 Volunteers. Calgary & South Zones – Lethbridge on May 28th was attended by 6 Volunteers. North Zone – Grande Prairie on June 21-22nd was attended by 5 Volunteers. Courses Rated in 2010 A total of 25 courses were rated or re-rated in 2010. Thanks to all of the Zone Captains for their commitment to coordinating the course rating schedule and Volunteers in 2010. Both men’s and women’s ratings were provided for each course and a summary of the courses that were rated are: Course Country Hills Golf Club Muirfield Lakes Golf Club Confederation Park Golf Course Cochrane Golf Club Ltd. Shirley Fowler Handicap and Course Rating Director 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 4 Hall of Fame Committee Report Alberta Golf held its sixth annual Hall of Fame/Distinguished Service Award ceremony at the Windermere Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, November 24, 2009. Jack Brooks, Ken Sharratt and Babe McAvoy were honoured with Distinguished Service Awards. Jack Brooks A tireless worker, Jack Brooks volunteered his time to both the Lacombe GCC and Alberta Golf Association since the late 1980’s. After serving on the AGA Board of Directors for six years he became president in 1998 and played a pivotal role in the merger of the Alberta ladies and men’s provincial golf associations. Jack was also one of the first Slope System course raters when the concept was implemented in 1991 and he continues to provide leadership in this area today. Babe McAvoy A member of the Windermere GCC since 1959, Babe McAvoy quickly became active as a club director, club captain and then helped to organize the Edmonton Golf Association in the 1960’s. Shortly thereafter he got involved with the Alberta Golf Association providing leadership for ten years before moving to the Royal Canadian Golf Association board where he served an additional ten years before retiring from volunteer golf administration in 1987. He received a Premier’s Achievement Award in 1989 and an RCGA Distinguished Service Award in 2002. Ken Sharratt In many ways, Ken Sharratt was the father of Alberta Golf as we know it today. A long time member of the Canyon Meadows GCC, Ken became involved with Alberta Golf after veteran administrator Charlie Scott became ill and asked him to “fill in.” Charlie never was able to return and Ken’s role quickly evolved into becoming the business head of the AGA for ten years, serving as Secretary – Treasurer and handling the day to day activities of the organization from the basement office in his home. In 1980, Ken became the AGA president before moving onto the RCGA for another decade term as a governor. He received a Premier’s Achievement Award in 1991 and an RCGA Distinguished Service Award in 2002. No golfers were inducted this year into the Hall of Fame. The board meeting and conference area of the Alberta Golf building houses the Hall of Fame plaques containing an artistic drawing and information about the achievements and accomplishments of each of the people who have been honoured since 2004. This information is also available on the website under the “Hall of Fame” banner. Brent Ellenton Executive Director Babe McAvoy 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Jack Brooks Section 1 Committees Ken Sharratt 5 The Alberta Golfer Magazine Report The Alberta Golfer magazine celebrated its 25th Birthday in 2010 and again boasted of being one of North America’s finest golf association magazines. This year’s issue was 92 pages and there was a definite focus this year to promote Alberta Golf activities and this allowed us to highlight: x x x x x x x Tournament personalities Member courses Tournament schedule Distinguished Service Awards Special events Scholarship award winners Sponsors The committee this year was comprised of Dunc Mills, co-publisher, and staff members Donald Stewart, Jack Lane and Brent Ellenton, who managed the committee. The large majority of professional photographs were again supplied by Al Savich who has also been a major league contributor for over twenty years. Grant Robertson of Parcom Marketing continues to excel in his role as the creative designer of our magazine as he too, has done for the term of the magazine. This year’s issue again featured topical golf industry articles, personal and golf course profiles, golf association promotional pieces and interactive submissions. We also continued to recruit professional writers to lend an expert touch to the greater part of our articles. A special feature was a two page spread showing off the front covers of all 25 issues. The 2011 editorial plan has now been finalized and will again feature a wide range of topical articles. Looking forward to the association’s centennial year, it was moved by the board of directors that we devote the entire 2012 Alberta Golfer magazine to highlighting the top stories, personalities and happenings from the past 100 years. To that end the committee put an author RFP process in place early in 2010 and was pleased to come to an agreement with local writer, Tyler Trafford. Tyler has written over 15 historical pieces including publishing the Calgary Golf and Country Club’s 100 year anniversary book. The advantages to utilizing the Alberta Golfer magazine to chronicle the association’s illustrious 100 years is that it is more cost effective and will enjoy a much greater circulation. A short overrun of hard cover books will be produced for those aficionados who would like a copy to add to their libraries. The Alberta Golfer Centennial Issue Committee is made up of Dunc Mills, co-publisher; volunteers Thelma Coutts, Fran Marsden, Bob Planidin, Diana Ringstrom and staff members Jack Lane, Donald Stewart and myself. Brent Ellenton Executive Director 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 6 Marketing Committee Report Nationally, the Royal Canadian Golf Association re-branded themselves as Golf Canada and introduced a new stylized maple leaf logo embracing a golfer as their new logo. The logo is reminiscent of the Hockey Canada brand. This change was well received throughout Canada and each provincial association was invited to follow suit in an effort to provide a similar family brand throughout the country. After considerable consultation with Golf Canada, the AG Marketing Committee and Executive Committee, the AG Board of Directors passed a resolution to adopt for 2011 an Alberta version of the Golf Canada logo, but to maintain the name Alberta Golf. The new red, white and blue logo will provide a fresh look for the organization as we head into our 99th year of operation. This year the Marketing Committee also continued to focus on improving communication and delivering relevant information to all stakeholders on a consistent basis. The director’s only section on the website was continually upgraded and details pertaining to new initiatives and breaking news posted regularly; a big thank you to Donald Stewart and Jack Lane for their efforts in this area. Electronic newsletters were circulated throughout the season and included information on upcoming events, program details and tournament results pertaining to the different groups associated with Alberta Golf. The ‘1st Tee’ e-newsletter was delivered the first week of the month to all volunteers; ‘The Club’ was emailed the second week of the month to members of the Public Player’s Club (PPC); and the third week of the month, ‘Tee Times’ was emailed to member clubs and other individuals. Alberta Golf was represented at the two PGA of Alberta consumer golf tradeshows in Edmonton and Calgary. Once again we had great success at the golf shows promoting Alberta Golf services and offering PPC memberships to public golfers. Once again, Parcom delivered an exceptional 25th Anniversary edition of the Alberta Golfer to all member clubs. The committee is well underway gathering articles for the 2011 edition. Media days were held for the RBC Insurance Alberta Open at Carnmoney; Frank Lindsay Foundation Alberta Junior Boys at Sundre; Sun Life Financial Alberta Men’s Amateur at RedTail Landing and Sun Life Financial Alberta Women’s Amateur at River’s Edge. The Public Player’s Club again exceeded its goal of 1,100 members! Our retention rate is approaching 60% which is a terrific indicator of the perceived value from this market segment. Additional details can be found under the PPC report. Brent Ellenton Executive Director 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 8 Membership Committee Report 2010 Members: Provincial Director – Varley Weisman South Zone Member Club Liaison – Gene Oleksin Calgary Zone Member Club Liaison – Chris Thompson Central Zone Member Club Liaison – Tom Skinner Edmonton Zone Member Club Liaison – Bob McGinn North Zone Member Club Liaison – Troy Suddaby Alberta Golf Staff – Donald Stewart The Membership Committee met a number of times prior to the Alberta Golf Spring Meeting to discuss agenda items and topics for the Zone Member Club Spring Meetings as well as to discuss meeting dates and locations. A total of six zone spring meetings were held with two being completed in the North Zone due to the geographical size of the zone. The dates and locations of the meetings were: April 27th - South Zone Spring Meeting – Connaught GC May 4th – North Zone Spring Meeting – Whitecourt GC May 6th – Edmonton Zone Spring Meeting – Derrick GWC May 12th – Central Zone Spring Meeting – Ponoka Community GC May 20th – Calgary Zone Spring Meeting – RCGA Golf Centre May 25th – North Zone Spring Meeting – Pipestone GC These meetings continue to be an excellent opportunity for Alberta Golf to educate our members on the services that are available to them. In 2011, we need to continue to work on having more clubs and their representatives attending these meetings. A small number of visitations were completed this year and work needs to continue on developing a new visitation plan for the Membership Committee. Contact with clubs is essential to the organization and we need to be sure that clubs are updated correctly and effectively. A new visitation plan has been drafted and will be provided to the incoming committee members to review and discuss during their next committee meeting. In 2011, member clubs will have the option of having their Membership Cards pre-printed with member name and club name. This was seen as a value added service to our clubs and was missed in 2010. Golf Canada continues to work on adding more value to membership in our association and will be launching these value added benefits in the months to come. Varley Weisman Membership Director 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 9 Player Development Committee Report The Player Development Committee met this past year to streamline the goals and objectives to dovetail with the overall Strategic Plan. These goals led to further developing the supporting programs for all levels of players, and to continue to promote the development of players at all levels through camps, National Golf in Schools and local initiatives. Cathy McMillan, Wendy Jerome, Chris Flaman-Haley, and Sue Edwards were instrumental in arranging Future Links Programs in the Edmonton, South and Central zones. Their efforts also resulted in adding several schools to the NGIS program either directly or through sponsorship. In addition, local programs in the province were created to encourage more girls and women to become engaged in the sport of golf. These included workshops on mental training for women competitors in the north zone, the 1st Girls Club Golf Camp in the South Zone and continued encouragement to female players of all ages in all zones. Committee efforts supported the concept of Team Alberta Girls and Boys and committee members were involved in preparing for and running the various Training Camps held throughout the season. The committee also reviewed the Order of Merit Points system to reflect the changing tournament landscape. AG Coaches under the guidance of our Provincial Coach, Randy Robb, and Player Development Manger, Matt Rollins, continued to enhance all aspects of the training programs and development camps to encompass all phases of competitive golf. In addition, AG members and committee members spent many hours as Non-Playing Team Captains and as tournament support during the season. Thank you to all who assisted in various roles over this past summer. Without this support the programs would not have been as successful. Susan MacKinnon Player Development Director 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 10 Provincial Council Representative Report As President of the Alberta Golf Association, I am a member of Golf Canada's Provincial Council. This Council is relatively new and members consist mostly of Provincial Association Presidents, and is augmented for continuity by Executive Directors representing three Canadian regions. There are two face to face meetings; one at the RCGA AGM and the semi annual meeting, as well as approximately 4 teleconference calls, each year. The chair for the past two years of this Council has been Alberta's own Leslie Dunning. The purpose of the Provincial Council is to provide advice to the RCGA Board of Directors on matters of governance, such as Bylaws and Policies. (The ED's have a committee that discusses operational issues). The side benefit is the information sharing that occurs between provinces during all the meetings. For example, Alberta shared our very comprehensive and informative “Volunteer Management Information Manual” with our fellow provinces in January 2010 at the AGM. The provinces were very impressed with the contents of the manual itself and were grateful to have received it. The majority of provinces do not have a formal training or information package for their volunteers. The major issue at the Provincial Council this year has been the National Team Championships. Questions were raised, such as: Should they continue? Who should pay? Who participates? Is it the responsibility of the RCGA? Recently, a pan Canadian Task force was created to deal with these questions and the Provincial Council has been asked for our input, as any change to National Team Championships would be a major shift in policy for the RCGA. At the semi annual meeting, the provinces will be providing comments/input/advice on Golf Canada's proposed By Law and Policy changes and at the same time we will get an understanding of how these proposed changes may impact our Provincial Strategic Plans, By Laws or Policies. Hopefully, this provides some understanding of what your President is up to, when I'm in Vancouver or Toronto. I would like to thank the staff at Golf House for their invaluable input and advice on issues I was not familiar with or when I needed some background. Good Luck to Tyrone Edwards, as the newest member of the Provincial Council in the upcoming year! Anne Ward Neville President & CEO Alberta Golf 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 11 Public Players Club Report Membership in the Public Players Club increased for the fourth consecutive time in 2010 reaching 1219 members. The PPC saw an increase of 5.4% over 2009 and has more then doubled since the club was established in 2006. Total Members 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 589 1050 1099 1157 1219 56% 4.5% 5.1% 5.4% % Growth PPC members received a PPC medallion, two PPC ball markers, and the 2010 edition of the Alberta Golfer magazine, as well as their Golf Canada membership card which includes a number of additional benefits. We enjoyed a 60% renewal rate in this membership category which is up by nearly 14% from 2009. The committee offered two separate contests which required members to renew their membership by a certain date in order to be entered into the draw. This led to almost 600 members being registered prior to April 2010, the best start ever for the PPC Program. Golf Canada began to sell two memberships to the public player in 2010. A base membership which provided the same benefits as a regular member for $29.95, and a gold membership for $54.95 which provided additional value through a GPS application for BlackBerry users. In total, Golf Canada sold 72 base memberships and 32 gold memberships to public players in Alberta. In 2011 we hope to continue to increase the size of our membership through marketing at the RCGA Golf Centre, promotion of the program at the PGA of Alberta Golf Shows, Alberta Golfer Magazine, and Alberta Golf Website. Donald Stewart Membership Services Manager 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 12 Rules Committee Report The 2010 golf season was once again a very successful one from a rules perspective. We had no significant issues, neither suspensions nor player discipline situations. A new decisions book was received this year and will be your resource for the next 2 years. The year really got started with our level three Rules Seminar attended by 21 (up from 9 in 2008) of our AG Rules Officials. This was the first time the expanded version was offered in Alberta. The seminar was held over 3 days in Calgary at Golf House. Instruction was delivered by Al Qually, Martin Blake and Tom Zariski. It followed the RCGA instructional format which was well received by all. Although we did not receive a 50% pass rate the officials were well rewarded with information and discussion which will make them better and more effective Rules Officials. We greatly depend on our officials to serve this great game and protect the integrity of the rules of the game. The committee voted to not utilize the ‘check point’ pace of play system this year due to cost and the lack of volunteers at host venues. Hopefully this will be re-considered in the future as the system is used by the RCGA (Golf Canada) and several other provinces. My commendations go out to our Zone Rules Captains - Bill Skinner, Herb Schlotter, Tom Zariski, Lyle Cuthbert and Thelma Coutts who were an integral part of our 2010 AG Rules Committee. Once again I hope the experience as a rules official, scorer and starter was a positive one for all of you and that your contribution to the game of golf was gratifying and appreciated by everyone. Many thanks to all the rules officials, starters and scorers who performed their roles so well this past year. The weather was certainly a major issue but our officials were always there to fulfill their duties, meeting and exceeding expectations. The AG volunteers who attended and passed the level four RCGA Rules Seminar are Lyle Cuthbert, Martin Blake, Les Swelin and Barbara Howes. This concludes my 3 year term as Rules Director for Alberta Golf. I hope I have made a difference and provided the leadership required for this portfolio. Al Qually Rules Director 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 13 Alberta Golf Association Foundation Scholarship Report The Alberta Golf Association Foundation was pleased to receive a very high number of scholarship applications this year. Special thanks are extended to all of the patrons who support the scholarship program on an annual basis and to the volunteers who assisted us with our first Casino Fundraiser for the foundation. This enabled us to improve our scholarship program and increase our awards on a yearly basis. Supporters of the game of golf are invited to contact the Alberta Golf Association Foundation for more information on how to establish a legacy of their own. Florin Bergh AGA Foundation President 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 14 Tournament Committee Report In spite of Mother Nature’s wrath with snow at the Alberta Open and rain at the Junior Ladies Championship tournaments the 2010 Alberta Golf Tournament schedule was successfully completed. Alberta Golf provided twenty nine tournaments for it membership. The tournaments include all ages, genders and skill levels from Bantam to Super Senior. Over 2100 competitors took part in Alberta Golf Tournaments with a noted increase in the number of Public Players members participating. Golf history was made this year at the Alberta Open when Jamie Kureluk shot a 25 on the back nine at the Carnmoney Golf Club. The Golf Fore the Cure nation wide raised $750,000 in 2010 bringing the total raised to date to $3 million. A thank you goes to Brent Ellenton for securing the continued sponsorship of RBC Insurance for the Alberta Open, Sun Life Financial for the Ladies and Men’s Amateur, Fidelity Investments for the Men’s Senior and Frank Lindsay for the Junior Girls and Junior Boys Championship. Alberta Golf continues to support outside tournaments with the Edmonton and Calgary Golf associations by scheduling rules officials when requested for their tournaments. The success of the tournament events can be measured not only by the number of registered competitors but also by the number Alberta Golf volunteers and their volunteer hours. Alberta Golf continues to recruit, train and support their volunteers. On behalf of all the volunteers I wish to thank all Alberta Golf staff, with a special thank you to Lori Evans our Tournament Events Manager for their continued support and on going training. Linda Kilian Tournament Committee Chair 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 1 Committees 15 Volunteer Development Coordinator It was my pleasure to take over from Les Swelin in the second year of the Volunteer Development Coordinator position. Anne Ward Neville was able to share the many Volunteer Management tools that had been developed by the Committee at the January Meeting of Golf Canada’s Provincial Council. The other provincial golf associations were impressed with our work and many are adopting some of our tools and processes. We continued with the webcast Orientation this year. volunteers. The February webcast was attended by 19 Jack Lane developed a Volunteer Manual for distribution at the Spring Meeting. Golf Quebec requested a copy of the Manual and are adapting it for their use. This resource will be updated as needed in the years ahead. Each Committee and Council was tasked with analyzing their Volunteer needs for the present and the future. This will help with our recruitment and training planning. For example, given the need for Course Raters, training seminars were held in South, Central and North Zones this year and were very well attended. Some policies were revised this year and approved at the Spring Meeting. These are the Recognition Policy and the Clothing Policy. Also at the Spring Meeting a Volunteer Engagement session was held to share information about the volunteer website, volunteer manual and position descriptions. Given the popularity of the 1st Tee eNewsletter to keep everyone up to date, this publication continues to be sent out on a monthly basis. Thanks for the opportunity to serve in this role over the past year. We have come a long way in our Volunteer Management systems, tools and resources at Alberta Golf. We have become a leader in Volunteer Management among the Provincial Golf Associations of Canada. These advancements have been in part due to our Committee contributions, but the main reason for our success is due to the dedicated and enthusiastic support from Jack Lane. Thanks Jack! The 76th RBC Insurance Alberta Open Championship started the morning of May 25th with a one hour frost delay. Jamie Kureluk of Calgary recorded the thrilling low score of the day shooting a 61 over the tough par 71 links layout. Kureluk’s scoring spree started at the par 5, 9th hole where he would go onto birdie 8 of the next 10 holes and eagle the 14th and 18th, both par 5’s. His amazing back nine would tally just 25 strokes and lead to the Carnmoney competitive course record eclipsing the past low score of 63 which was previously shared by Wes Heffernan and John Simmons. The PGA Tour record for the lowest nine-hole score is a 26 by Corey Pavin at the 2006 US Bank Championship on a par 34 nine. Jason Bohn also shot a 26 in a Canadian Tour event in 2001 on a par 35 nine. For a par 36, no one is believed to have ever scored lower than 27. For the second day in a row the competitors experienced an hour long frost delay. Under threatening grey skies the field was out in earnest seeking to make the cutline of the top 48 competitors. It was moving day for Mitch Evanecz, the 2009 Alberta Amateur Champion of the Red Deer GCC as his fabulous 6 under par score of 65 moved him to within 3 shots of Jamie Kureluk. Evanecz’s round featured 5 birdies and an eagle and was only beset by one bogey and was the lowest round of the day. To exemplify the incredible play of the field of the Alberta Open Troy Butterfield of the Pheasantback Golf Club in Stettler aced the 17th hole. 53 players had a score of 151, 9 over or less, to make the cut for the final round. The field of 53 competitors teed up for the third round in an effort to climb the prestigious leader board. In a testament to their competitive spirit and the typical Albertan’s ability to withstand alpine weather, not one competitor withdrew in the frigid wet conditions. Due to accumulation of snow on the golf course the Tournament Committee was forced to call a suspension of play at 1:30 pm and inevitably to cancel the round because of unplayable conditions at 2:30 pm. Final standings for the 2010 RBC Insurance Alberta Open were based on the first two rounds of play. Jamie Kureluk, of the Cottonwood Golf and Country Club was declared the 2010 champion claiming his first Alberta Open. His victory earned the first place cash prize of $6,000.00. Congratulations to the Carnmoney Golf Club and its members for being the host venue for the 2010 RBC Insurance Alberta Open Championship. The competitors found Carnmoney a golf course that was in outstanding condition and proved once again to be a challenge to their golf games. The competitors not only enjoyed the golf course but they also found the food and hospitality of the membership second to none. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 2 Amateur Championships and Teams 20 Thank you to our sponsor RBC Insurance for their support and attendance of the Championship. The tournament received extensive coverage by the Calgary Herald and the Calgary Sun during the tournament, as well as coverage on the Golf Channel and extensive coverage on the internet due to Jamie Kureluk’s incredible history making 9 hole score of 25. It is hopeful that this coverage will encourage sponsorship for years to come. A final note, the Championship was a great success because of the great support and commitment from the Alberta Golf volunteers, Court Fortems, Chris Thompson, Lyle Cuthbert, Martin Blake, Gary Selman and Vern Davidson and Alberta Golf staff, Lori Evans, Brent Ellenton and Paul O’Brien. Thanks also to Head Rules Jim Richardson, and his fellow rules officials, Bob McGinn, Lonny Petersen and Herb Schlotter for providing ruling support and post round scoring. At the brief meeting following the tournament some recommendations made for next year would be: -Verification of membership to be done before the actual day of the tournament to make registration more efficient and quicker. -A rule that all golfers must be registered at least 15 minutes before the shotgun start or they will be penalized to facilitate filling the “no show” spots with the golfers who were late registrants. -Also noted that the radios had some technical difficulties on the course. 1 Cody Adolph T2 Jace Barros T2 Jeffrey Gauf T2 Gordon Selman T5 James Harwood T5 David McGlone T5 Corbin Adams T5 Terry Filewich T9 Shane O'Neill T9 Tim Garbutt T9 Spencer Pukalo T9 Nathen Shelemey Stony Plain Edmonton Petroleum GCC Edmonton CC Belvedere GCC Edmonton Petroleum GCC Westlock GC Jagare Ridge GC Glendale GCC Sturgeon Valley GCC Windermere GCC Highlands GC Sturgeon Valley GCC 70 -2 71 -1 71 -1 71 -1 72 E 72 E 72 E 72 E 73 +1 73 +1 73 +1 73 +1 Debbie Keller Tournament Chair 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 2 Amateur Championships and Teams 26 Sun Life Financial Alberta Amateur Qualifying – North Mighty Peace Golf and Country Club July 5, 2010 There were no unusual happenings during the tournament. The condition of the course was good and the green surfaces were outstanding. As there was considerable rainfall for the previous two weeks leading up to the event there was quite a bit of casual water on the course. The Committee decided we would play the first round under lift, clean and place and play the course at 6,970 yards. The result was twofold: excellent scoring with two scores of 67 and a 68 but a round in which the last group was in after six hours and forty-five minutes. The Committee was unhappy with the pace of play so on day two the ball was played down and a pace of play warning was issued to each player at the first tee. The weather was again perfect with little or no wind. Again the results were twofold: the scoring was again good with the leader being 10 under at the end of the day and pursuers at 5 under and 4 under. The pace of play improved to the last group completing the round in five hours and fifty minutes. The cut to 48 players and ties resulted in a very impressive cut line score at 149. There were no slow play penalties but the pace of play was affected by backups on the second hole as it seemed to cause an inordinate amount of trouble. The Committee on day three in an effort to speed up play re-emphasized Alberta Golf pace of play policies. Also at the suggestion of fellow volunteer Les Swelin when we started to back up at the second hole we closed the first tee until the backlog cleared. This seemed to work very well. The scoring was up a bit as the 20-25 km/hour wind provided the links course with additional difficulty. However, the leader was able to increase his lead to 12 under par and carry an eight stroke lead into the final round. Herb Schlotter assessed a slow play penalty to a player in the middle of the field. The player appealed the decision but under review by Borden Woytkiw, Lori Evans and Ian Baker the appeal was rejected. The warnings seemed to be working as the last player was in five hours and ten minutes. Round four brought a few surprises. We actually completed a tournament with no rain during play and the leader was caught at the end of regulation play by a sparkling 67 in spite of very windy conditions. Steven Lecuyer defeated Andrew Funk in a four hole playoff with a scintillating 40 foot birdie putt on the difficult 18th hole. Frank Van Dornick finished third at 4 under par and Scott Desmarais and Mitch Evanecz tied for fourth at 2 under par. In a gesture of good sportsmanship and a desire to defend his Alberta Senior Men’s Championship, Frank withdrew from our Willingdon Cup team to allow the “young pups” to carry the banner. Thus our team consisted of Steven Lecuyer, Andrew Funk, Mitch Evanecz and Scott Desmarais. Scott Desmarais was also the low player over 25 and consequently earned the fourth team position on the Alberta Mid-Amateur team. Note: Frank Van Dornick was the low player but was already a Mid-Amateur team member. Our Rules Chairman again awarded a slow play penalty and it was also appealed. Lori Evans, Ian Baker and Jim Richardson heard the appeal and again the appeal was rejected. The word spread that we were serious about pace of play and the result was good. The last player completed his round in four hours and forty-five minutes in spite of the tough playing conditions. There are long walks between greens and tees so this time was excellent. Mr. Ron Dupuis of Sun Life Financial was on hand to congratulate the winner but unfortunately because of the play-off and a plane leaving for Calgary had to skip the presentations but at least witnessed the playoff. He was very pleased with the media coverage of the tournament and re-affirmed how pleased he is with the sponsorship. The coverage by the media was the best it has been for several years. The volunteer crew consisted of: Starters: Wendy Jerome and Ted Thresher Head Rules Official: Herb Schlotter Rules: Gordon Dunmore, Larry Rywak, Ian Baker and Jim Richardson Head Office: Lori Evans The crew carried out their duties in superior fashion and was on time and cheerful. The victory marked the province’s 23rd Willingdon Cup title and first since 2004. Team Alberta finished five strokes back in second with a team-total 430 (-2) while Saskatchewan (+1), defending champion Ontario (+5) and Quebec (+6) rounded out the top five. The Inter-provincial Team Championship for the Willingdon Cup featured four-member teams competing in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play. The best three of four scores count towards the overall team total. The first Willingdon Cup Championship was held in 1927. Albin Choi fired a final-round 66 (-6) to win the 106th playing of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. Choi, a member of Team Canada’s Development Squad, was solid all week finishing with rounds of 69-68-68-66 for a tournament total score of 17-under to win the historic Earl Grey Cup. His four-round total of 271 ties Richard Zokol (1981) for the best stroke-play finish in Canadian Men’s Amateur history, and lowest since the event returned to stroke-play format in 2008. A crowd in excess of 2,500 people took to London Hunt to see Choi - who originally hails from Surrey, B.C. - drain seven birdies during his sizzling final round. Choi stood on the 18th tee with a chance to equal the London Hunt competitive course record of 64, but bogeyed the hole – the lone blemish on what was an otherwise dazzling round – to finish at 66. Andrew Funk was the low Albertan with a four day total of 286 to finish T11. The 2010 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at London Hunt and Country Club featured 240 players with a cut after 36 holes to the low 70 and ties. Redtail Golf Course joined London Hunt in hosting the opening 36-holes of the championship with the final two weekend rounds being contested at London Hunt. The 2011 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship will take place at Niakwa Country Club at a date to be determined. The 107th playing of the championship will once again feature an expanded field of 240 competitors with Elmhurst Golf and Country Club also challenging competitors during the opening 36-holes of the event. 2010 Alberta Willingdon Cup Team – Andrew Funk, Scott Desmarais, Mitch Evanecz, Steven Lecuyer 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 2 Amateur Championships and Teams 31 All Weather Windows Alberta Men’s Mid Amateur Championship Ponoka Community Golf Club June 15-17, 2010 Kevin Temple from the Country Hills GC became a two time champion with a sudden death playoff victory over another two time champion, Frank Van Dornick from the Camrose Golf Group. I struggled a little with my shots today. I made it closer than I really wanted it to, it got kind of exciting there for a few holes.” With his score, Bunker also nabbed the 40 and over mid-masters division for a fifth time in a row. The event was played as a shotgun on one of this summer’s rare warm and sunny days with little wind. The golf course had been hit very hard by a hailstorm a few days before the event but the grounds crew had worked hard to get the greens back in shape and conditions were close to ideal. The official’s crew consisted of Jack Brooks as Head Rules Official, assisted by Bruce Petrie and Peter Boland. They had an easy day of it with no difficult rulings and no controversy of any sort. Jack Lane helped greatly with registration and had computerized standings out shortly after all players had returned their cards. A total of 56 golfers qualified to play in the provincial seniors which were held the week following, with a score of 81 being the cut point. A barbecue lunch followed play and was enjoyed by all players who stayed. The staff at the Canal at Delacour GC was unfailingly friendly and helpful and made every effort to make our day a success. One recommendation would be to provide a tee gift as very few players stayed after the game to receive their prizes or lunch which demonstrates that they are not needed. 1 T2 T2 T2 T2 T6 T6 8 T9 T9 T9 T9 T9 T9 T9 T9 T9 Peter Denhamer Robert Reynolds Phil Kerbrat Russ Edwards Randy Deeg Mike Sweett Ken Sissons Darrell Penner Bob Edmunds Bryan Horrocks Glen Chapman Ken Walchuck Craig Nixon Phil Fedoruk Brian Rohl Roger Larson Rodney Bollinger Glencoe GCC Bearspaw CC Willow Park GC Pinebrook GCC Strathmore Gc Highwood GCC Calgary GCC Glencoe GCC Pinebrook GCC Paradise Canyon GCC Canyon Meadows GCC Silver Springs GCC Bearspaw CC Bearspaw CC Strathmore GC Connaught GC D'Arcy Ranch GC 71 72 72 72 72 73 73 74 75 75 75 75 75 75 75 75 75 -1 E E E E +1 +1 +2 +3 +3 +3 +3 +3 +3 +3 +3 +3 Jim Groundwater Tournament Chair 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 2 Amateur Championships and Teams 34 Fidelity Investments Alberta Men’s Senior Qualifying – North Legends Golf Club August 4, 2010 There were 83 competitors vying for the 53 spots available in the Fidelity Investments Alberta Senior Men’s Championship. The winner after the playoff was Tom Skinner who led wire to wire and then defeated challenger Floyd Kilgore after a 4 hole sudden death playoff. The senior team that represented Alberta at the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship was Tom Skinner, Floyd Kilgore, Frank VanDornick and Ron Kelly. Ron had the low round of the tourney, a 65 on day 3. Simson was the only competitor in the field to shoot a final score under par. “I played a really solid round today,” said Simson, who carded two birdies on the front nine, three birdies and three bogeys on the back nine to finish with 2-under par 70. “I got so far ahead so I tried to do some crazy stuff. I tried to go for the green on 15 and that wasn’t a good move. I just wanted to try it once because when will I get to again. I hit two good shots on 16 and made a bogey and a bad chip on 17 for a bogey. It was nice to make that 35-footer on the last hole to birdie and finish out with a good move. I always enjoy playing with Graham (Cooke); he’s a gentleman and a great player.” It was a battle for runner-up honors, as four time champion Graham Cooke of Hudson, Quebec, and Ian Harris of Bloomfield, Michigan went head-to-head at 8-over par for most of the back nine. However, Cooke pulled through to finish with a final-day round score of 5-over par 77 (72-74-73-77—296). Harris who was tied for fifth place at the end of the third round shot a 2-over par 74 (77-75-71-74—297) to land him in the final top three. The day held some promise for a pleasant outing despite the low clouds in the valley. Fortunately, no frost and no start time delays. Golf carts were in-place and the driving range was open. Donald was already set-up for registration and a number of players had checked-in. Kananaskis staff (Marc LeBlanc) commenced serving breakfast at 8:00 am and continued to serve until after everyone had registered. Registration proceeded without a hitch with one exception. One of the teams were able to register only two players and were being considered for a possible DQ. However, all four players appeared at the tee in advance of their scheduled tee time. It was noted that a number of teams had listed only one contact individual during the advanced registration and many appeared for tournament registration without a validated handicap. Fortunately, Donald was able to pull the respective missing handicaps off the RCGA Network. A cross-over start commenced promptly at 9:00 am from the #1 and #10 tees of the Mt. Kidd course and continued thereafter with a 9 minute interval between groups. The last tee time was at 11:15 am with a gap of one tee time before regular patrons were scheduled on the course. Following registration and at the direction of Gary Selman, I proceeded to hole #5 to serve as an observer for those players who attempted to drive the green. Some confusion with the tee markers on #5 arose as my initial instructions indicated all play would be from the blue tee markers with the exception of hole #5 without giving the alternative. For this hole only we had moved the blue tee markers to the back tees prior to the commencement of play. After 6 or 7 groups went through #5 in which only one individual made the attempt to drive the green, I decided to rove the course and help where I could. As it turned out, there were very few rulings required and none by me. During this time I observed no gaps in the play. A number of contacts with course marshals provided by Kananaskis confirmed that our officials (Gary and Bruce) were most successful in keeping the play moving. Once the first groups started to complete their respective rounds, I returned to the Banquet Centre to assist Donald with the scoring. Donald had arranged to display the results as soon as they were checked, verified and posted on three overhead monitors in the dining area. I can’t imagine how difficult the tallying of scores would be if it weren’t for the BlueGolf software. After all scores had been posted we soon realized a tie for low gross and low net had occurred. Arrangements were made for a playoff to resolve the tie for low gross while the latter was determined by a matching of cards policy. The following is a list of the prize winning teams: LOW NET Innisfail GC Priddis Greens GCC Whitecourt GC LOW GROSS Country Hills GC Red Deer GCC Silver Springs GCC -10 206 -10 206 -9 207 -5 211 -5 211 -2 214 Scott, the on-course Manager, was most accommodating as we proceeded to a playoff to determine the low gross champion. On the second playoff hole, Country Hills prevailed over Red Deer. Meanwhile, we proceeded with supper rather than have those who had already been waiting some 2 hours to wait for the final outcome. Unfortunately everyone not in line to win a prize left as soon as they had eaten leaving a very sparse gathering for the presentations. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 2 Amateur Championships and Teams 39 Our staff comprising of Donald, Gary and Bruce, did an excellent job fulfilling their responsibilities. The food service this year was much improved and thought of as good value. The fashion show was hosted by Ewan Winters and the golf shop workers. A discounted sale followed. The pace of play was approximately 5 hours 45 minutes both days. The shotgun start was facilitated on 9 holes thus the slow round as there were 72 players on nine holes to start. There were some suggestions as to improvement for the following years: -Players would like to know what event they are playing in (Mid-Handicap or the Marg Ward) after entering. -The price of a cart should be included in the registration entry. This would solve some of the long walks between holes resulting in some slow play. Even if some would like to walk at least each group would have 2 carts. Champions: Mid-handicap champion – the Coutts trophy – Lianne Yeung of Elbow Springs - 177 Marg Ward Champion – Marg Ward trophy – Kerri Couch – Cardiff – 197 Overall Low Net – Belinda Chiang – Jagare Ridge – 130 (-12) It was indeed a pleasure once again to serve as the tournament chair for this event. Donald Stewart welcomed the ladies and presented each one with a pink shoe bag from AG, a pink pin from Golf Fore The Cure (GFTC), copies of pin placement and rules sheets, and some candies. Steven and Craig Paetz from the Strathmore office of Investors Group were set up to take names for a draw prize (duffel bag). Their office also wanted to do something for GFTC so we had decided on a KP on hole 13. The ladies were offered a chance to try for it for a $5.00 fee on Monday only. The ones who paid were the only ones eligible for the prizes. Their table displayed three very attractive prizes of decorative wooden boxes carrying wine and wineglasses. Play on Monday was a bit slow at about 5:45 hours and some of it due to the cold and very strong winds. On Tuesday Donald greeted the ladies with their scorecards and for the first 55 a black and pink Nancy Lopez shopping bag with a precept golf ball from GFTC. Play moved much better on Tuesday, finishing in 5:15 hours. A wonderful buffet lunch was served at 1:30 pm with a superb menu of hot food and lots of it! I started the prize presentation during dessert and coffee with sincere thanks to Brian Bassen, Manager and Head Professional, Morris Groves, Assistant Manager and Professional, as well as Dave and the greens crew and Tim and the kitchen staff. They all did everything possible in a warm and hospitable manner to help make the tournament a success. Thanks went to Thelma Coutts and Esther Dyck who did a great job of Ruling, and to Donald Stewart from the AG office for his efficient registering and scoring. Steven and Craig made their prize presentations for the wine by drawing 3 names, as none of the players who paid got on the 13th green with a tee shot. Their part for GFTC raised $265.00 which was sent to Jessica Small on September 2nd. With the help of Thelma and Esther we gave out 20 door prizes. Some were donated and I had bought 7 others. The Tournament winners were as follows: Champions: 2nd place: 3rd place: 4th place: 5th place: 6th place: 7th place: 8th place: Joan Jackson and Christie Hungerland-Lora Cari Louis-Smith and Katie Grant Sue Rae Olsen and Elizabeth Yamamoto Judy Falkinson and Grace Galanti Donna Cammer and Judy Rohl Sylvia Adams and Shirley Handel Darlene Sterling and Darlene Kamp Katherine Starling and Maryanne Pinchbeck Lakeside Greens Carnmoney Maple Ridge Maple Ridge Strathmore Lakeside Greens Highwood Strathmore 128 129 130 130 131 131 132 132 A group photo was taken out on the practice putting green, and the tournament was over at 3:15 pm. Suggestions for next year: -Posters are sent from the office for more exposure as so many women do not look at the website. Thelma had the idea this year to send or take out pink posters so we followed up on that and distributed about 45 posters to Calgary and South clubs, considering it a good investment in publicity. -Handicaps are frozen one week in advance of the tournament and this information to be put on the website for those registering. This would help to avoid the last minute problems with the scorecards which we experienced at Strathmore. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 2 Amateur Championships and Teams 48 -First tee gift ideas for another year included umbrellas with the AG logo, a stylish headband with the AG logo, pink wind shirts like the ones used last year at River’s Edge, blankets and/or cart mitts, water bottles with AG logo, 2 pairs of good socks, cool ties, pink wrist watches. -Purchase an AG banner naming the tournament to string at the host club. -Putting a sample scorecard on the back of the rules sheet would probably make it easier for the participants to understand the scoring and use as a reference. The one in the tournament manual is excellent. -Pin placements could be done on a separate sheet. -Have a place on the scorecard for the net score. In closing, we had excellent co-operation and a very warm welcome from the Management and staff at Strathmore Golf Club from the beginning. It was a pleasure working with them, with the AG volunteers Thelma Coutts and Esther Dyck, and with Donald Stewart. Morris Groves of the Strathmore Golf Club asked that they be considered for future provincial tournaments. They had a chance to play the well known long par 6 hole. It was cool and damp the first day but beautiful for the last. A very lovely dinner was catered for the ladies following the first round. Ellen Nielson recorded a hole in one on the Par 3 17th. She was presented with a trophy from the Nursery. Ellen and her partner Marilyn Gibson of the Drayton Valley Golf Club won the tournament. Next year in Camrose we are hoping to get a much better tournament registration. Ladies have requested to have individual Zone 4Ball posters sent out to all the clubs. All other suggestions were asked to be sent into Golf House. The weather was cold and windy for the first day of play but warmed up nicely for day 2 and thankfully there was no rain either day. With so much rain this year the course was quite wet so Head Rules Official Borden Woytkiw advised the participants that the tournament would be played with the lift, clean and place rule in effect. This was new to some of the ladies, but they appreciated it. Borden, along with Cliff Watt kept everyone happy on the course with no serious rules issues. Head Professional Kevin Easthope and his staff were very accommodating helping us with our set up and making sure we had what we needed. The food served at the banquet was excellent and everyone was pleased that they were given a choice as to whether they wanted chicken or beef. The sponsors were great. Corona Babes on the Beach contest added to the fun of the first day. Participants had to keep track of their sand shots and the two teams that were crowned Babes on the Beach had to wear crowns and sashes on day two. They were Loree Astleford and Barb Grodaes and Melissa Saken and Sandy Senyk. In addition they were awarded a Corona Beach towel and beach bags. Lopez Precept closest to the pin sponsored hole was won by Lorraine Polishuk and she received a Lopez Golf Erin II Hybrid. Subaru sponsored a Safest Drive contest with the winner June Dumka getting a pair of Sundog eyewear Paula Creamer sunglasses and case. In addition, Subaru City of Edmonton brought a vehicle to the site for display on the 2 days. Investor’s Group set up a fun challenge for the ladies while they waited on one of the par 3 holes. They were invited to enter their name for a chance to win a Nancy Lopez Golf sport duffle bag. The bag was won by Linda White. Thanks to David Keppler and Bernita Hayden from Investor’s for spending the day entertaining the ladies with their contest and for the $100 donation made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The top 8 teams were awarded prizes and the tournament was won by Marg Hatch and Lorraine Polishuk. The Championship is a team competition featuring four-man teams facing off in stroke-play competition. The three low scores from each team are used in the competition. In years past, the Cup has seen names like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, and Peter Jacobsen play in its annual tournament just to name a few and has become a hot-spot for college golf coaches to do their summer recruiting. Alberta’s strong team consisted of Wilson Bateman from Edmonton, Cole Chelle from Edmonton, Zachary Griffiths from Red Deer and Andrew Ritchot from Lethbridge. Alberta Coach Randy Robb and Non Playing Team Captain Varley Weisman accompanied the boys to New Mexico. Over the three days Alberta put in one of its strongest performances ever and finished in a tie for 2nd with British Columbia. All four of our players represented themselves, their home course and community and Alberta Golf in admirable fashion and their efforts resulted in the second best finish ever for Alberta in this event. The success of this team is in large part due to the ongoing player development program that Alberta Golf has in place to support junior golf. The relationship the players have with Coach Randy Robb is positive and they respect his observations, knowledge and feedback. The course was scheduled to be played from the combo tees at 5,872 yards. Rain started to fall in the late afternoon and the sky darkened throughout the players’ meeting. Unofficial predictions were that if the rain fell throughout the night the already rain-soaked course would be unplayable. To make the course more welcoming the rules officials shortened the championship course by 208 yards to ratings of 73.1 and 131 and altered the distances on the round 1 score cards. Rain fell all night and by 5:30 am on the first day of play the bunkers were filled, a virtual lake connected the ponds between holes #17 and #18, a rushing stream in front of the finishing hole and ducks swimming on #17 fairway gave more than ample evidence of un-playability. Although the course maintenance crew worked extremely hard throughout the day the rain continued to fall and the course remained unplayable for day 2. Finally, on Thursday the girls played the Draw 1 pairings and everyone completed eighteen holes of play. The forecast was not encouraging so at the banquet it was announced that in case the course would again be unplayable the championship results could still be determined based on the scores of one completed round. The Glendale generously allowed all of the girls to play the final round without a cut beginning with 6:30 am tee times. Early in the morning the players, officials and volunteers assembled to begin draw 2 tee times and pairings. However, by 8:40 am thunder and lightning caused a suspension of play and persistent rain meant all of the players, officials and walking scorers were brought back to the clubhouse. At 9:10 am it was announced that another storm front was approaching and a final decision on the championship would be made by 10:10 am. By 9:20 am we were informed that the course was again unplayable which gave the organizers fifty minutes to prepare for the awards ceremony. Because we did not have any alternates or a developmental team this year, the Coach was able to spend more time with the team as a group and the girls individually, which seemed to pay off. Shelley was able to give the girls feedback following all four rounds of golf including the practice round which she reviewed with them hole by hole. Although the Alberta Team placed fifth in the overall standings by end of the day on Wednesday, two members of the team qualified to play for the Championship on Thursday and Friday - Christie Lin and Casara Hong. The girls impressed their hosts greatly on all levels and represented themselves, their families and AG well. Alberta’s Junior America’s Cup Team – L to R Sabrine Garrison, Jennifer Ha, Dean Spriddle (Coach), Wendy Jerome (NPTC), Becky Martin, Christie Lin 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 3 Junior Championships and Teams 64 As required, all team members participated fully in all required aspects of the tournament and accompanying social activities. The girls finished 11th overall among the 18 teams. On a daily basis they were 8th, 10th and tied for 9th. Individually they finished T11th (Jennifer), 40th (Becky), T47th (Sabrine) and T53rd (Christie). Dean worked well with the girls and established rapport with them very quickly. He worked with them both before and after the daily rounds, as well as assisting them during play itself. Our return was delayed a day because of the lack of flights so after the award presentations the girls and I accompanied Mrs. Parks to a shopping mall for a few hours and then Dean, I and the girls visited Torrey Pines and went for pizza. I have sent AG thank you letters to the host families, the meet Directors, the hotel and the Manager of Golf Operations at Morgan Run. I have also sent a thank you to the people who hosted the Captain’s social. I will ensure that the Invitation packet for next year’s tournament and any excess materials provided to me for this event are returned to the AG office as soon as possible.. The course was in great shape and the staff and members were very accommodating for our group. In the girls division Sabrine Garrison of Country Hills lead wire to wire shooting consecutive rounds of 73. We are excited to see the progress that Sabrine makes over the next few years as she is already one of the top juniors in the province. Katie Rutherford of Heritage Pointe played some great golf to take home the novice division honours. Brett Pasula of the Red Deer GCC held his ground with consecutive rounds of 71. Matt Williams of Pinebrook put on a final round charge with a 68 which wasn’t quite enough to catch Pasula. Brendan Brown of the Carstairs GCC won the novice division as an 11 year old. This was a very strong group of Bantam Boys who look to lead the province in competitive golf over the next 4-5 years! The Arthur P. and E. Lynne Cox Memorial Endowment fund contributed towards the Alberta Ryder Cup Team. The Northern Alberta and Calgary residents of the team met at the Alberta Golf office on Sunday and drove down to Lethbridge to stay the night. The remaining team members met at the hotel on Monday morning and drove down to Whitefish together. The team had their practice rounds Monday afternoon on the South Course and a welcome dinner was provided by the Montana Golf Association immediately following the round. A team picture was taken prior to the start of the tournament on Tuesday morning. The tournament is a Ryder Cup format with a morning four-ball match play and afternoon Chapman alternate shot and an individual match play on the second day. The Alberta team competed against Montana in 15 and under, 16 years, and 17 years old age brackets. The Alberta Girls team won convincingly over Montana with a final score of 22 – 14. The Alberta Boys team put up a great fight but were unsuccessful in defending their title against Montana losing 20.5 – 15.5. The event was very successful with a number of the players commenting on how they enjoyed the format and the opportunity to represent Alberta. Over the Tour’s first fifteen years, tens of thousands of young Albertans have honed their golf games on the Tour, from the elite of Alberta’s juniors to youngsters playing in their very first competitive event. Thanks to the generous support of the Tour’s corporate partners we have been able to provide a very solid platform to assist in the overall junior development program in Alberta, and also fund 56 academic scholarships to Alberta Golf’s Scholarship Foundation. The boom in interest for junior golf from the late 1990s through to about 2005 is over, though. When at one time Tour events could attract 120 players by simply scheduling a tournament, average attendance at our events is now about 80 players. This drop mirrors the reduced numbers of players competing at Alberta Golf’s provincial championships as well, so the question gets asked, “Where did the players go?” I think it is fair to say that the overall quality of play at the top levels of junior golf in Alberta has remained fairly constant, but I think it is also fair to say that the depth of both quality and quantity of junior golfers has dropped over the last decade. Certainly the economy has played a part, but there are other factors that have contributed to the drop-off. There are other athletic options for the kids, such as soccer, which is cheaper for the parents, or yearround hockey which demands almost total commitment from the kids. Social networking such as Facebook and Twitter didn’t exist ten years ago. But I also think that a lot of kids simply found out that junior golf is just darn hard work! It takes a lot of time and sweat to get better at golf, and perhaps some players found they just weren’t willing to make that sacrifice. It’s not all doom and gloom in junior golf by any means. Some of the best performances on the Tour this year were turned in by younger players, which bodes very well for the immediate future. Tyler Saunders, 14, of Glendale, beat out another 14-year-old, Matt Williams of Pinebrook in the Tour Championship after firing 1-over par 71s at Wolf Creek. Jennifer Ha, only 16, captured the girls’ Tour Championship with a fine 73 and will soon be playing Division I collegiate golf in the States. Scores of other young players are eager and willing to earn the privilege of representing Alberta in national and international competition. We hope we can continue to play a role in helping develop those players for the challenges they have ahead of them. Participants were selected based on how they finished at the previous years Bantam Championship. Alberta Golf Coach Randy Robb played the lead role at the camp and was assisted by Jason Haley as the Calgary Zone Assistant Coach. This camp was set up to introduce the young prospects in Alberta to provincial level coaching. On Monday, May 10th the group met at the Sundre GC to review the camp and go over expectations. We spent a few hours at the short game area to help the kids settle in and get to know each other. We had a great discussion about the course to get the bantams excited and prepared for the Frank Lindsay Junior Boys Championship hosted by Sundre in July. The group then hit the course for some mapping experience and semi competitive matches. On Tuesday, May 11th we met at the Woodside GC and started out with shot demonstrations and worked on effective practice. Rey Erickson, Professional Club Fitter and Club Maker, was able to join us for a few hours to discuss the importance of club fitting with the group. The timing for a discussion on club fitting couldn’t have been better with this young group. We then set out for 18 holes at the host site for the Calgary Junior Qualifying which was a great opportunity as for most of these golfers it was their first time trying to qualify for the Provincial Junior Championship. The feedback from the Bantam participants was again very good. It seemed to be a great kick start to the season and a nice incentive for golfers competing in the Alberta Bantam Championship. Thank you very much to Randy Robb and Jason Haley for their leadership at this level. Lynne Cox Memorial Camp Heritage Pointe Golf Club and Pinebrook Golf and Country Club May 17-18, 2010 The E. Lynne Cox Memorial Camp began in 1987 and is one of Alberta’s top training camps for junior lady golfers. The top junior girls attending the camp are selected based on their previous year’s standings in the Junior Ladies Order of Merit. This year, the camp was capably led by Dean Ingalls and Dean Spriddle. On Day 1 the girls met at Heritage Pointe for introductions and player profile presentations. The morning consisted of course management and short game work on the 3-hole loop which continues to be an ideal location for elite instruction. In the afternoon the girls were then able to play 9 holes on the course with a little friendly competition. On Day 2 the girls met down at the range of the Pinebrook GCC where they were separated into two groups and were able to have some individual instruction in the areas of short game (chipping, pitching and putting), pre-shot routine, full swing and sand shots. The group sessions continue to be a valuable time for the girls to prepare for the upcoming season. Rey Erickson, Professional Club Fitter and Club Maker, was also on site to discuss the importance of the right equipment. He was able to spend some time with each golfer to talk about what was in their bag. In the afternoon, the girls were able to play 18 holes of golf with one of the professionals to discuss course management and tournament play. The day was concluded with a dinner and discussion with the Professionals and Jennifer MacKinnon regarding post-secondary opportunities, scheduling and opportunities within Alberta Golf. Thank you very much to Paul Cox and the sponsorship received from the E. Lynne Cox Memorial Fund to continue running this elite camp. Also thank you to teaching professionals, Dean Spriddle and Dean Ingalls for their great leadership during the camp. This year we headed out to Sundre, the host of the 2010 Frank Lindsay Junior Boys Championship and then on to Redwood Meadows for a true test on one of the provinces toughest courses. Randy Robb provided a lead role assisted by Kris Qually, South Zone Assistant Coach. The goal for this camp was to properly prepare the group of juniors for the Junior Championship. They were provided with on-course management discussions as well as hole by hole review following each day. The juniors were able to prepare a very well detailed course map in their plans for the championship in July. Throughout the two days, we also touched on scholarship opportunities, effective practice strategies and engaged the juniors in some healthy competition. The group met on the 17th in Sundre where we had an ice breaker session at the short game facility. Most of this group has known each other for quite some time as they have been to a number of junior events together over the years. We had a good discussion about the course and upcoming tournaments over lunch and filled the juniors in on a few opportunities that they have in the upcoming years. In the afternoon the juniors played the course, worked on their yardage books and enjoyed some friendly competition. On Day 2 the group met at the Redwood Meadows course where the professionals spent some time with the players on the range discussing some of the areas they should be working on to take their game to the next level. Following a good discussion about the Sundre Golf Club over lunch the players then headed out to play Redwood from the back tees at 7300 yards for a grueling test. This camp continues to be a great way to start the year for these juniors and to also make them aware of what their next few years of junior golf should look like. Matt Rollins Player Development Manager 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 4 Junior and Amateur Development Camps 73 South Zone Player Development Report Our first Girls Club Golf Camp in the South Zone was a huge success. It was held on June 12, 2010 at Connaught Golf Club in Medicine Hat. We had 15 girls from age 9 – 13 participate in an hour golf lesson from Nadine Ash (Assistant Professional at Connaught) and a 30 minute yoga session. The afternoon ended with snacks and prizes. The majority of the girls have played the game and have an interest in developing their skills. Given the poor weather we had this summer, we got very lucky on camp day. The sun was out and the girls got to show off their cute golf attire. For girls this is very important. We received excellent feedback on the day and many requests for more camps of this kind. This type of camp will be planned again for the south zone. CN Future Links lessons were held at Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club on May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. This 45 minute lesson was given to 14 kids age 6 – 8. The goal of these lessons is to introduce the basics on golf in three aspects; etiquette, rules and skills. Fun is the primary rule when attending these lessons. The session wraps up with ice cream for all participants in the club house to mingle with the members. Sue Edwards South Zone Player Development Captain 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 4 Junior and Amateur Development Camps 74 Central Zone Player Development Report The 2010 season for the Central Zone started off with two Future Links camps, one hosted by Wolf Creek at the end of May and the other by Red Deer Golf and Country Club at the beginning of June. As we struggled all season with the weather this camp had to be cancelled because of bad weather. We were again fortunate to have five young ladies in the Wolf Creek camp. The golfers had wonderful instruction at Wolf Creek and we were able to see the new nine as we did our on-course management session there, nine holes with their instructor. Again it was a year where seven clubs responded by nominating young golfers for these camps. Chris Flaman-Haley and I developed an e-mail and list of contacts for next year so we can remind the clubs to get their nominations in. I enjoyed my year as co-Captain of Player Development. I believe we managed to have a few more schools come on board for the NGIS program. We will continue to encourage more schools to join in the future. Cathy McMillan Central Zone Player Development Captain 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 4 Junior and Amateur Development Camps 75 Edmonton Zone Player Development Report National Golf In Schools Through the sport psychology sessions I have run at the Royal Mayfair (3), Belvedere (1) and Edmonton Country Club (1), I have managed to provide sponsorship for four schools with a possible addition of two more pending. Future Links I encouraged one Edmonton school to apply for the materials for this program. Identification of Junior Girls Instead of going to the clubs this year and identifying girls who already have access to support, I contacted the organizers of the high school golf tournaments and obtained the names of those girls who had done well. I also contacted the program director at Ross Sheppard High School’s Golf Academy and Enid Botchett’s Girls’ Club to see if they would recommend any up and coming girls. One girl was recommended from the high school program and Enid forwarded two names from the Edmonton area. Short Game Clinics At the Member Club Spring Meeting three clubs expressed interest in holding short game clinics. None of those clubs could come up with a “convenient” date. I intend to pursue this next year by approaching the club professionals prior to opening day to attempt to establish a number of these clinics early in the season. Personal Comments I find that there are many tasks required of individuals in Player Development. I therefore have tried to find a focus for my efforts each year. As a result of last year’s Women’s Summit, I decided to focus on getting more women to feel comfortable with the game and with competitions available. As I believe “leading by example” speaks louder than words I have participated in many competitions myself. As our club’s representative to the Edmonton Inter-club events, I encouraged a number of women, who have never competed to play in the Podersky Cup event (an alternate shot competition). I did this by matching them with experienced and pleasant individuals in home events. They enjoyed the experience so much they have asked to play away matches next year. I have also been running workshops on mental training for women golfers. I started by giving an after dinner address at the Royal Mayfair’s Opening dinner. Following this event I was asked to run a workshop for their low handicap players and a second for those in the mid-handicap range. Subsequently, I was approached by Belvedere and Edmonton Country Club to do the same at their clubs. As this is my professional area and volunteer focus they agreed that instead of paying me they would sponsor schools for the National Golf in Schools Program. Suggestions for 2011 I would like to suggest to AG that they adopt a strategy used in Ontario which lists all invitational tournaments held by member clubs (men, women, mixed, juniors) across the province. This is done by date and includes the contact number/email of the tournament chair. In the past a list was sent to all member clubs but I am sure it is now available on their website. A site like this would encourage greater participation in invitational club events. This coaching program is provided for junior girls who show a genuine interest and desire to work on improving their golf game as well as taking part in the Alberta Golf Provincial and Bantam Championships. Junior girls that are attending the elite spring camps are not eligible for these programs, so that the program remains developmental (and more girls get coaching opportunities). In December we met as a group to assess the player’s individual needs along with strength and conditioning programs. Each and every player had very lofty goals and this was the key area to start in the off season. Next our group attended the scholarship seminar as they were all in the middle of making their post secondary plans which was a great fit. In April we took the group out to Vancouver where they were able to have a practice round and discuss the Richmond GCC (2010 Canadian Junior Host). From there our players were supported by our coaching staff while competing in the Future Links Pacific Championship at the Beach Grove Course in Tsawwassen. This event has one of the strongest early season fields and we had 7 Albertan’s finish in the top 14 and two players receiving exemptions into the Canadian Junior which was by far the best showing that Alberta has had at this event. From there we had monthly meetings with our players at select venues around the province and continued to increase their competitiveness and camaraderie. The agenda included information on Player Development, Rules, Course Rating, Handicap, Membership, Visitations, and a Tournament Poster Exchange, followed by an open question period. Donald Stewart and Jack Lane were attending from AG and did a presentation on the new Golf Canada card and membership. They also did a Handicapping Seminar at 7 pm for 7 of us. Waterton lakes GC and Highwood G&CC were the only courses rated this past summer. Stan Prime was invited to come to Lethbridge to give a seminar on Course Rating to the new volunteers. This took place at the Lethbridge Country Club on May 29th, with 9 attending, 7 from Lethbridge area, and 2 from Calgary. A handicapping information seminar was scheduled for early June at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort, but was cancelled due to lack of registrations. Thelma Coutts has been very busy this year giving Rules Clinics at several clubs including the Lethbridge Country Club, Magrath Golf Club, Land O Lakes Golf Club and Vulcan Golf Club. The Tournaments for the South Zone in 2010 were: -Amateur Qualifying South at Riverview Golf Club, Medicine Hat -Junior Boys Qualifying South at Henderson Lake Golf Club, Lethbridge Thank you to all of the South Zone Volunteers, Directors and Associate Directors who worked hard to honour their commitments, to the AG staff for their help and advice over the past three years, and a very warm welcome to the new Volunteers for 2011. Bette Flannigan South Zone Council Chair 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 5 Zone Reports 84 Calgary Zone Report Thanks to all the Directors, Associate Directors, Volunteers, Member Clubs, golfers and staff for making 2010 a successful golf season. The golf season started with a very successful Directors, Associate Directors and Volunteers Spring Meeting in High River, April 30-May 2. The Calgary Zone had very good representation and participation. A full to capacity Handicap Seminar was held May 19th at the RCGA Golf Centre. Jack Lane and Donald Stewart used the Handicap PowerPoint for their presentation. All participants attending completed the written test and have received their Certification certificate. A Zone Member Club Spring Meeting was held May 20th at the RCGA Golf Centre with only seven clubs in attendance. Updates were provided by Lyle Cuthbert, Rules; by Chris Thompson, Member Club Liaison; by Stan Prime, Course Rating & Handicapping; by Susan MacKinnon, Player Development; by Jack Lane, Volunteerism; by Donald Stewart, Alberta Golf Centennial and Golf Canada Update. The floor was opened to questions and discussion, followed by lunch. Rules Clinics were presented to Silvertip Residents League, Earl Grey Ladies, Elbow Springs Juniors and Confederation Park Senior Ladies Club. Chris Thompson presented two Rules Clinics at Lynx Ridge Golf Club. We received numerous positive comments for the manner in which our Rules Officials conducted the events. Lyle wishes to thank each of our Rules Officials for their dedication and excellent performance during the competitions held in Calgary Zone over the past season. Zone Rules officials provided support to the “Rules Knowledge” Pilot Study by attending numerous club play days in the Zone and asked club members to complete rules quizzes as prepared for the pilot study. Rules official Gary Selman involved himself vigorously and returned a substantial number of responses. All the responses were processed and forwarded to the study coordinator for inclusion in the database. Player Development Captain, Chris Leach, stepped into the position mid-summer and worked diligently to become familiar with the personnel and operations of Alberta Golf. Welcome Chris! Our long time volunteer and master course rater, Stan Prime, has ceased active involvement with Alberta Golf. Our best wishes to Stan in his future endeavours. Handicap and Course Rating Captain, Howard Jaquish, stepped into the position mid summer. During June and July Howie worked diligently putting a Course Rating team together. We now have 8 course raters in the Zone. Since taking over the reins Howie and his team completed 8 ratings in 2010. Congratulations, this was no small task. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 5 Zone Reports 85 The Calgary Zone welcomed the following new Volunteers for 2010: Valerie Bittner, Peter Boland, Raymond Bosch, Chris Leach, David Lewko, Dave Peterson, Michael Smith, Curtis Walsh and Bob Wright. Welcome and trust you will have an outstanding volunteer experience with Alberta Golf! Sylvia Blasken Calgary Zone Council Chair 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 5 Zone Reports 86 Central Zone Report Central Zone members kicked off the year with a spring meeting held at Ponoka Golf and Country Club on May 12, 2010. Attendees were treated to an informative session led by Donald Stewart and Jack Lane, followed by a luncheon and a round of golf. All member clubs in the Central Zone are up to date regarding Slope and Rating of the respective courses, thanks to the tireless efforts of Jack Brooks (Lacombe). Pine Hills, Drayton Valley and Three Hills were updated this year. Future Links Camps organized by Cathy McMillan were affected by the bad weather that plagued Central Alberta this year. In spite of the poor weather an excellent camp was held at the Wolf Creek Golf Resort (Ponoka). Under the leadership of Cathy McMillan more schools were also introduced to the National Golf in Schools program with some schools implementing the program this year and more lined up to sign on over the next golf season. Tom Zariski (Drumheller GC) and his volunteer “Rulies” kept things rolling along at tournaments held in the Central Zone this year. These included the RBC Insurance Alberta Open Qualifying South (Olds GC), all Weather Windows Alberta Mid-Amateur (Ponoka), Sun Life Financial Amateur Qualifying Central (Olds), Frank Lindsay Alberta Junior/Juvenile Boys Championship (Sundre GC), CN Future Links Event (Pine Hills GC), Alberta Men’s Mid Handicap Championship (Olds), and the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (River Bend GC). My term as Zone Chair ends this year and I want to take this opportunity to thank the board, staff and the volunteers in the Central Zone for all their hard work and dedication in making this golf year run smoothly without any hitches. Cal P. David Central Zone Council Chair 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 5 Zone Reports 87 Edmonton Zone Report This year started on a very positive note. Our Zone Member Club Spring Meeting was held at the Derrick Golf & Winter Club on May 6, 2010. This year’s plan was to have all the Zone Captains give a report on their involvement in the Zone and what plans were in place for 2010. We also had Golf House in attendance with Donald Stewart and Jack Lane giving reports. AG President Anne Ward Neville was also in attendance and gave an overview on this year as well. The member’s present gained insight into AG services available to them. The questions and answers were overwhelming and very positive. We had 3 Club Managers present and their input was also very positive. The Spring reports covered Rules changes, Visitations, Player Development, Girl’s Club, Course Ratings and Handicap Seminars, Volunteers and what they do, Alberta Golf Centennial, Scholarships, Sun Tour, and last but not least Tournament Schedules. The new logo and Golf Canada will take a little time to accept and the new logo for Alberta Golf will take time to be accepted as well. AG looks forward to launching the new brand in 2011. As outgoing Zone Council Chair I know the team in the Edmonton Zone is very strong and totally devoted to the membership and members in our area as well as other areas in the North. I strongly take my hat off to each and every one of the volunteers working on behalf of AG. The following is a listing of the courses that were rated this year. In addition to the ratings, a training session for all raters was held at Lacombe on May 10th and another training session was held later in June to train new raters in the Grande Prairie region. A number of experienced raters in the Edmonton Zone participated in the instruction of the session. Edmonton Zone Courses Rated in 2010: Derrick Golf and Winter Club Edmonton Petroleum Golf and country Club Links at Spruce Grove Tofield Golf and Country Club Redwater Golf club Edmonton Springs Golf Club White Tail Crossing Glendale Golf Club This year’s tournament schedule was quite busy with 8 tournaments and 17 Tournament Days in the Zone. Inclement weather impacted several events and the Rules Officials should be commended for simply getting on with the job at hand, dealing with the adverse conditions. Fran Marsden, Linda Killian, Ian Baker and Herb Schlotter led a Rules Clinic at the Royal Mayfair and Ian and Herb did the same at the Derrick. In total about 50 people were in attendance. Ian and Herb also toured the Derrick at the request of Trevor Goplin, the Head Professional, and responded to questions he had about various course markings and situations that the Membership encounter in playing the course. They also made recommendations for the club to consider in marking two particularly troublesome areas of the golf course. Under the leadership of Borden Woytkiw, with assistance from Ian Baker and Herb Schlotter, a set of Rules Quizzes have been developed and are available on the AG website. The concept is that the Rules Quizzes can be given to groups, who respond as a group, thus avoiding any personal embarrassment. The answers are being collected and collated to see what areas of the Rules are, or are not, widely understood. An ancillary benefit is that questions invariably arise that can be answered both for the group and individually. The question and answer sessions that follow are like mini Rules Clinics. Lyle Cuthbert has also led several sessions in Calgary. Other senior Rules Officials may have also done so in their respective zones. The response to date is very positive. Next year Herb plans to send a letter to each of the member clubs in the Zone offering the Rules Clinics or quizzes to better publicize this aspect of AG’s member benefits. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 5 Zone Reports 88 There are presently 22 people in the Edmonton Zone who are listed as Rules Officials. Of these 13 are Level 1 or 2 and 7 are Level 3. 3, Ian Baker, Fran Marsden and Herb Schlotter are Level 4. The Zone is well represented with qualified Rules Officials. One important task of the Zone Rules Captain will be to continue to mentor existing Rules officials and encourage new volunteers. In closing I would like to thank the staff at Golf House and the Executive Committee for the help and guidance throughout the past season. Av Beirnes Edmonton Zone Council Chair 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 5 Zone Reports 89 North Zone Report The North Zone volunteer base has increased with the addition of Perky McCullough, GPGCC; Joanne Smith, HPGC; Rhona Law, Dunes; and Ken Lyle, Dunes as Associate Director, Handicap and Course Rating Captain and Troy Suddaby, Member Club Liaison who attended the AG Spring Meeting. Two Member Club Spring Meetings were successfully held. The first at Whitecourt in May had representatives of 6 clubs in attendance and the second at Pipestone (Wembley) in June with an additional 5 clubs. At each meeting a full range of information was exchanged with the assistance of Don Stewart and Jack Lane including a presentation of the visitation format. Including the presentations at the spring meetings a total of 9 club visitations were concluded. In conjunction with the second spring meeting a handicap seminar was conducted with 7 attendees successfully completing the exam. As usual the North Zone Junior Boys Qualifier at GPGCC and the Men’s Amateur Qualifier at MPGCC were successfully conducted in early July. Continuing the endeavour for representation of all zones in all activities, a course rating seminar was conducted by the Edmonton Course Rating team and 4 North Zone raters were certified and have formed the first team of North Zone members. Ken Lyle, Tim Meyer, Troy Suddaby and Joanne Smith form this team who then completed course ratings at 6 clubs; Riverbend, Westlock, Lakeside, Valleyview Riverside, Grande Cache and The Dunes. This is a significant accomplishment and will reduce the future financial commitment on AG as we will no longer be dependant on the expense of importing a rating team from Edmonton. A rules clinic was accomplished at Jasper by Ian Baker with 30 attendees. Although the forum was a success the consensus is that an altered format should be developed for this function. The year ended with a fall council meeting in September where the council’s nominations for the forthcoming year included Ken Lyle, Zone Council Chair; Tim Meyer, Rules Captain; Perky McCullough, Player Development Captain; Troy Suddaby, Member Club Liaison; Ken Lyle, Handicap and Course Rating Captain. William H. Skinner North Zone Council Chair 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 5 Zone Reports 90 Section 6 Staff Reports Executive Director’s Report Staffing We were pleased to honor Eric Rogers, Accountant (13 years of service); Lori Evans, Tournament Events Manager (11 years of service); Matt Rollins, Player Development Manager (7 years of service); Donald Stewart (6 years of service); Jack Lane (3 years of service) and myself (22 years of service). Alberta Golf has been very fortunate to retain such dedicated and qualified staff as we have had this year. The crew has been toiling hard in coordination with all AG volunteer directors and associates in pursuit of our mission. Congratulations Donald, Eric, Jack, Lori, Matt, and Paul on a job extremely well done! Capital Assets The AGA quietly celebrated its second anniversary in the new office facility at the end of September. The office continues to provide a superlative face for the association and we receive nothing but rave reviews from all visitors. As well, through new creative cash flow generation initiatives generated throughout the year, we have been able to minimize the need for the use of the Canadian Western Bank line of credit. Special thanks must go out to Lola Rozsa for her $100,000 donation to our building fund. This great supporter of golf has always been a great leader and her financial assistance provides a great legacy for golf in the province. Grow the Game Initiatives The Alberta Golf Public Player Program maintained its standing as one of our largest clubs finishing the year in excess of 1,200 members. As we look to the future, we can anticipate continued growth in this program for many years to come. The close to 60% retention rate is a great indicator of the perceived value of this offering. There is no question that this concept was made possible by the introduction of the national web enabled RCGA Network handicap system. Along with the newly implemented RCGA Regional Manager position, staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to recruit non-member clubs and meet with non-compliant clubs in an effort to grow membership this year. As a general rule, the meetings were very positive, but unfortunately did not produce the results we had hoped. The continuing response - regardless of the new tangible benefits introduced this year - is that small to mid size clubs still do not see enough value for their members or the club to justify the expense. The Team Canada fundraising concept was not well received in Alberta and failed to generate much funding. However, the national on-line golf auction idea was implemented in July and was able to raise in excess of $50,000 for Team Canada initiatives. This program will be continued in 2011. Sponsorship Through the efforts and many contacts developed over the years, we were able to secure corporate sponsors to support our initiatives this year. All were enthusiastic boosters of Alberta Golf and with the downswing in the economy were greatly appreciated. RCGA Network The national web enabled handicap system continues to evolve and improve. The number of active clubs on the system in Alberta is now 165. The software continues to be very robust and the ability for players to post scores and course’s to check handicaps over the web are very popular. The RCGA’s contract with the owner of the RCGA Network software expires in early 2011. An RCGA subcommittee was struck to investigate all options in the marketplace and recommend a course of action. To assist in this process, the subcommittee sought out the expertise of professional IT consultant, Donal Byrne to help review the past, present and future of our web enabled handicap system. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 91 Foundation The Alberta Golf Association Foundation implemented a fundraising casino held on November 19-20, 2009 at the Stampede Casino and raised $66,948.55. The money will be used primarily for scholarships over the next two years although up to 10% of it can be used for administrative expenses. The Foundation has been approved for its next casino at the Palace Casino in Edmonton in the 4th quarter of 2011. Strategic Planning The Alberta Golf Strategic Plan and Business Plan process that was initiated in late 2002 continued to provide guidance and structure to the association’s operations. This year, we amended our plan to dovetail with revisions the RCGA put in place to ensure operational continuity for amateur golf administration right across Canada. Governance In an ongoing effort to streamline our operations, the Board approved an action to hire a facilitator to assist in the evaluation and possible revision of the association’s volunteer structure. Tammy Oberik was selected to provide this assistance from an RFP process over the summer. Tammy conducted 20 interviews with volunteers and staff in September and produced a summary report which will be shared with the board in November 2010. A Board of Directors Summit is planned for the Banff Centre in February where further action steps will be discussed. Volunteerism After 22 seasons at Alberta Golf, I am still humbled by the energy, enthusiasm and tenacity of our 100 strong volunteers. Your dedication to promoting golf locally, regionally, nationally and internationally is outstanding. No matter what obstacles obscure our way, there is always the will and determination to conquer all. Your leadership and passion plays a vital role in the growth of this great game and you should all be very proud. Brent Ellenton Executive Director 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 92 Accountant Report The 2009-10 budget was approved after a lot of hard work by directors and staff. We managed to stay within the budget in almost all areas. The finance break out session at the spring meeting always helps to get things off to a good start. When staff and volunteers use the proper forms for tracking and reporting expenses and revenues it makes my job easier. Most tournament chairs used the forms and this helped to speed up the payment of invoices and to track the expenses for all events but we must remind the clubs that they must still send us an invoice. The chartered accounting firm of, Enns and Company were in the office the week of October 18 to audit the 2010 financial statements for the association and the foundation. Their work was completed and their audited statements are included in our annual report. We made it thought the year with only minimal use of our line of credit and will likely not need to use it in the next year. Eric Rogers Accountant 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 93 Player Development Manager Report Team Alberta Boys What a great first year for the Team Alberta Development Program. In December we met as a group to assess the player’s individual needs along with strength and conditioning programs. Each and every player had very lofty goals and this was the key area to start in the off season. Next our group attended the scholarship seminar as they were all in the middle of making their post secondary plans which was a great fit. In April we took the group out to Vancouver where they were able to have a practice round and discuss the Richmond GCC (2010 Canadian Junior Host Club). From there our players were supported by our coaching staff while competing in the Future Links Pacific Championship at the Beach Grove Course in Tsawwassen. This event has one of the strongest early season fields; we had 7 Albertan’s finish in the top 14 and 2 players receiving exemptions into the Canadian Junior which was by far the best showing that Alberta has had at this event. From there we had monthly meetings with our players at select venues around the province and continued to increase their competitiveness and camaraderie. A majority of these players have moved on to Division 1 schools in the NCAA and we look forward to following their results. Team Alberta Girls We had a great start with the Girls Team Alberta Development Program. In February we met as a group to assess the player’s individual needs along with strength and conditioning programs. Each of the girls had their sights set high and this was the key area to start in the off season. In April we were fortunate to bring the girls down to the home of Team Alberta (Heritage Pointe) for a scheduling session along with some competitive play and effective practice. Unfortunately our Camp in May was cancelled due to a fairly large snowfall. We met with the girls again in June at River’s Edge to get them prepared for the Sun Life Financial Alberta Ladies Amateur. Randy Robb was able to walk around the course with the girls and discuss some strategies for the tournament. Again we met with the girls in July prior to the Frank Lindsay Alberta Junior at Glendale and had a great session walking the course and getting the girls ready for the tournament. Following some good results the girls were off to a number of various team events and capped off a great season. This was a fairly young group and a majority of these girls will remain on the team for 2010-2011. Training Camps Training Camps were a success this year as we conducted the following elite camps: ¾ Bantam Camp – May 10th and 11th – Sundre and Woodside – 12 Bantam Boys ¾ U 18 Lynne Cox Camp – May 17th and 18th – Heritage Pointe and Pinebrook – 10 Junior Girls ¾ North Men’s Amateur Camp – June 13th and 14th – RedTail Landing and Edmonton Petroleum Club – 9 junior/amateurs from North of Red Deer ¾ Men’s Elite Camp – June 18th and 19th – Edmonton Petroleum Club and RedTail Landing – 12 amateurs ¾ Under 18 Boys Camp – July 8th and 9th – Sundre and Redwood Meadows – 12 Junior Boys ¾ Ladies Elite Camp – July 8th and 9th – Heritage Pointe and Rivers Edge – 6 Ladies National Golf in Schools NGIS had a very successful year with our volunteers promoting in various zones, our display at the HPEC Conference and the constant search of business’s looking to adopt schools near to them. There are close to 100 schools now running the program across the province and this will hopefully attract our future members to the game. www.nationalgolfinschools.com CN Future Links As of August 15th we had 11 CN Future Links Learn to Play sites and 8 Junior Skills Challenges. We also had approximately 30 sites conducting a CN Future Links Program in some capacity based on previous season’s equipment and teaching material. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 94 Coaching Our coaches were very busy this season with a number of initiatives. September 16th was a review and discussion on the upcoming year with Randy Robb and Dean Spriddle. Dean looks to step forward this year to assist us in improving our girls/women’s training programs. With Dean’s amount of experience at that national level, he has some great ideas for us to expand and grow the depth of competitive players in the province. Randy will continue in his current role focusing his efforts on the boys/men’s programs. We will also look to our identified professionals in the various zones for their assistance throughout the upcoming season as well. Professional Transition Strategy This year we added the Professional Transition Strategy into the Association Strategic Plan. This has been put in place to help young aspiring golfers with their goals of making the jump from elite provincial/national level competitor to touring professional. 2010-2011 will mark the first year for this program and includes a team of four individuals who fit into our current selection criteria. The Player Development Committee approved the idea that this years focus will be four male competitors and based on its success we will look to expand the program and include any female competitors in the upcoming years. An application form was sent out to all Alberta Resident touring professionals and amateurs that are in the transition phase. We received 6 applications and selected a team of four individuals for the first year: Mitch Fox Ryan Lecuyer Todd Halpen Scott Stiles Key areas for assistance: ¾ Establishing a Support Team (Coaching, Management, Sport Science) ¾ Financial Planning / Budgeting ¾ Sponsorship and Fundraising ¾ Monthly Scheduling ¾ Team Travel Opportunities ¾ Team Competitiveness and Camaraderie The team met on September 12th at the Edge School for the day to review the following: ¾ Introductions and overview of program concepts ¾ Individual Needs ¾ Schedule and Budget overview/discussion ¾ Potential Sponsors (Discussion and Contact Information) ¾ Fitness and individual assessments ¾ Tee Times at Bearspaw CC (2011 host Can Tour event) This meeting was needed to get the ball rolling for this group and we look forward to its progress in the upcoming year. Volunteer Support Without the countless hours of volunteer time spent on conducting and improving our programs we would not be where we are at today. A special thank you goes out to the Player Development Committee Members and Team Captains who helped guide us in the right direction. 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 95 Team Results This season we were fortunate to have some tremendous results at National and International competitions: ¾ Girls AB/MT Ryder Cup Team – Champions ¾ Boys AB/MT Ryder Cup Team – 2nd ¾ Girls Junior Americas Cup Team – 11th ¾ Boys Junior Americas Cup Team – T 2nd ¾ AB Girls Team at RCGA Junior – 5th ¾ AB Boys Team at RCGA Junior – 2nd ¾ AB Ladies Team at RCGA Amateur – 4th ¾ AB Men’s Willingdon Cup Team at RCGA Amateur – 2nd ¾ AB Men’s Team at Pacific Coast Amateur – 11th ¾ AB Men’s Team at RCGA Mid Amateur – 2nd ¾ AB Ladies Team at RCGA Senior – T 6th ¾ AB Men’s Team at RCGA Senior – 2nd Matt Rollins Player Development Manager 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 96 Member Relations Coordinator Report This year I transitioned from the Customer Service Representative position into a supporting role as the Member Relations Coordinator. It was an extremely busy year as I contributed in membership and marketing, as well as tournaments, volunteer management and handicap and course rating initiatives. Membership and Marketing Donald Stewart and I visited a number of member clubs to discuss AG programs and services. These meetings are a great opportunity to gain insight into what initiatives the clubs think are valuable to them. AG participated in both the Calgary and Edmonton PGA of Alberta Consumer Golf Shows. These shows continue to be a great avenue for interacting and networking with both member clubs and individual members. We look forward to building upon our relationship with the PGA of Alberta and continuing to contribute to the Golf Shows in 2011. The 1st Tee eNewsletter was sent out to our volunteer roster each month and it continues to be a popular way to stay in communication with our volunteers. Monthly messages or updates were provided by our President Anne Ward Neville, Jim Ross from the Prairie Turfgrass Research Centre at Olds College, as well as all of the staff members. I was also able to assist Donald and the Marketing Committee with the development of promotional materials and website updates as needed. Tournaments I was scheduled to work a number of tournaments in 2010 including the exciting Sun Life Financial Alberta Ladies Amateur at River’s Edge Golf Club, the Senior Qualifying at the Canal at Delacour, and the Edmonton & North Zone 4-Ball at Sandpiper Golf Club. Thanks to Susan MacKinnon, Jim Groundwater and Janice Lamarre for their hard work as Tournament Chairperson. Volunteer Management We have come a long way in our volunteer management systems, tools and resources at Alberta Golf. We have become a leader in volunteer management among the Provincial Golf Associations of Canada. The opportunity to work with Leslie Dunning has been wonderful and her knowledge and expertise has been put to great use. The Volunteer Orientation was once again well attended by our new recruits and was very informative for them. The Committee published the 2010 Volunteer Manual and it was distributed at the Spring Meeting as well as published on our website. Thanks to Tyrone Edwards for his assistance with this particular project. This resource included position descriptions for all volunteer roles and will also be used as a recruitment tool. This resource will continually be updated as needed in the years ahead. Our recognition program was reviewed and amended to more adequately recognize the contributions of our volunteers. We look forward to further enhancing our volunteer management program in 2011. Handicap & Course Rating Committee The Committee met 4 times via teleconference. Our course raters conducted 25 ratings and re-ratings in 2010. The Zone Captains did a fantastic job of coordinating the ratings and volunteers within their zone. Rating data was entered by the Captain and sent into Golf House. I updated the RCGA Network for handicap purposes and sent official letters and course handicap tables to the clubs. 3 training seminars were held in Lacombe, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie. Thanks to all of the experienced raters who helped instruct the seminars. Janice Lamarre and Borden Woytkiw attended the National Course Rating seminar held by the RCGA in April. 4 Handicap Seminars were held in the South, Calgary, Edmonton and North zones. 82 participants attended and 43 clubs became RCGA Handicap System certified. Thanks to Donald Stewart for helping instruct the seminars. Also a special thanks to Stan Prime, who resigned in 2010, for his commitment to course ratings over his tenure with Alberta Golf. Jack Lane Member Relations Coordinator 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 97 Membership Services Manager Report Membership 2010 saw a slight decrease in overall members for the association. Alberta Golf worked extensively with Blair Armitage, Region Director of Membership Development with the RCGA visiting and contacting clubs in an attempt to increase membership. This program saw little success in 2010 with only two new member clubs, but we will hopefully reap the benefits in the upcoming years. Invoices were once again sent out in January and the majority of clubs were fully paid prior to the June 1st deadline. Clubs will once again be invoiced early in January to increase our cash flow and to ensure that clubs have enough notice to pay by the deadline. The Golf Canada cards were introduced in 2010 with limited success. Members were asked to activate the cards online through the Golf Canada website to access the benefits of their membership. The activation process was not well received by the general members with less then 14% of our members activating their cards. In 2011, clubs will have had one year to fully understand the activation process as well as the value added benefits of the Golf Canada card and we look forward to having more members access these exciting features. 2011 will also see the return of the pre-printed membership cards. I will be working diligently over the upcoming months getting member rosters from clubs in order to print the cards. Members will once again be required to print their handicap cards off of the RCGA Network if they require a verified handicap. We will continue to work with Golf Canada over the upcoming year to try to have this added to the back of the Golf Canada member card. Spring meetings were held in the North (Pipestone GC and Whitecourt GC), Edmonton (Derrick), Central (Ponoka), Calgary, (RCGA Golf Centre) and the South zones (Connaught GC). The meetings this year were well attended and all attendees left the meeting well educated on the services that Alberta Golf provides and were updated on 2010 events. Member club visitations continue to be a priority of the Membership Committee with a number of formal visitation reports being completed. The committee is in the process of re-defining the role of the Member Club Liaison and the visitation process. Public Players Club The Alberta PPC continued its growth in 2010 and increased in members by over 5%. The committee worked hard early in the season in an effort to increase the rate of renewals and were very successful with 60% of 2009 members renewing in 2010. More information on the PPC can be found under the PPC Committee. Marketing The Marketing Committee had a successful year developing posters and brochures as well as the development of the new logo for Alberta Golf. 2011 will be an exciting yet busy year for the committee as Alberta Golf launches the new brand at the AGM which will include an updated website early in the year. Don Stewart Membership Services Manager 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 98 Tournament Events Manager Report Well another tournament season is over, it seems like just yesterday we were getting snowed out at the Alberta Open! It was a tough year for tournaments due to some very bad weather and we had to cancel a number of rounds, but we limped through and managed to get them all in. The Junior Girls Championship was decided on one round and the Junior Boys Championship on three instead of four. A number of rounds were also played with mark, lift, clean and place in effect. The Tournament Committee ran a training session for new volunteers at the Spring meeting and it was very well attended. We are very fortunate to have such a keen bunch involved in tournaments! As Tournament Events Manager I try to be at most of the major events and this year I attended the Alberta Open, Men’s Mid Amateur, Men’s Amateur, Junior Boys Championship and the final day of the Ladies Senior Championship. For the first time, Alberta Golf did the scoring for the Glencoe Invitational and I worked that event as well. The organizers were very happy to have the scoring trailer and system there as it made their jobs very easy and I believe they will continue to use our services in following years. I want to say thank you to all the dedicated volunteers that not only put in some very long hours, but more often than not in horrible weather. I had a great time with all of you at the various events this year! The Rules Committee ran a level three provincial rules seminar May 14-16 at Golf House. 7 out 20 attendees attained a passing mark. The committee will be reviewing the seminar schedule in an attempt to improve the percentage of graduates in 2011. In conjunction with the spring meeting we also held a training seminar on course set up for all potential rules officials and head rules officials. This seminar is held yearly and the participants are always engaged. The Alberta Golf Rules Officials also had a busy year working outside events along with covering our own events. We once again were asked to officiate at the Edmonton Golf Association events as well as the Edmonton Junior championship. We sent a rules official to the Calgary Ladies Golf Association Senior Championship and sent officials to the ACAC Regional and Provincial Golf Championships. Providing this service allows us to promote Alberta Golf both with current and potential future members. Thank you to my committee chairs Al Qually, Provincial Rules Director and Linda Kilian, Provincial Tournament Director and of course, 2nd VP Sandra Craig for all your support throughout the past year. Thank you to all committee volunteers for your energy and enthusiasm! Lori Evans Tournament Events Manager 2010 Alberta Golf Annual Report Section 6 Staff Reports 99 Tournament Intern Report This summer I had the opportunity to work as the Tournament Intern for the Alberta Golf Association. Even with the weather and hectic schedule, I still had a great time working every tournament. Everyone, including the staff and volunteers made me feel welcome and part of the team. I started in May and worked the biggest tournament of the season, the RBC Insurance Alberta Open Championship. The weather was unpredictable, as well as the player’s scores. I had the privilege of witnessing Jamie Kureluk shooting a 25 on the back nine making world news and history. Although the tournament was a great experience, it was also a realization of the amount of work that goes into these tournaments. In June, I worked the Mid-Handicap / Marg Ward Championship with Lori. It was held at the Banff Springs Golf Course which made it a great tournament to be a part of. The ladies were equipped with their new AG cart mitts and ready to play the beautiful course. The rest of the summer consisted of getting all the materials ready for the tournaments and making sure I knew how to run my own tournament. These consisted of the Frank Lindsay Junior Girls Championship, Ladies Senior Championship and the Central Zone 4Ball. With each tournament passing my confidence grew. I have a much better understanding on how to run an event from start to finish and feel like this internship has prepared me for a new career. The four months of my internship were a blur but I won’t forget everyone at Golf House and all the volunteers who helped me along the way. Thanks to all and good luck to everyone in the future.
