The Cost of Excellence
Dear Donoho Family and Friends:
The Donoho School’s mission is to provide a quality, college-preparatory education for highly-motivated and intelligent students. I am
proud to say that we are accomplishing this goal. 100% of our graduates continue to be accepted into colleges—a record held since 1963.
Over the past five years the average ACT score is 26.3, we have had 7 students be recognized as National Merit Finalists, and Donoho
graduates have earned over $23 million in merit-based college scholarship offers. During the past five years, we have also provided
our students with the opportunity to save time and money in college by earning college credits while at Donoho. More than 40
Dual Enrollment on-campus classes have been offered and 124 AP exams have been administered, with almost 75% earning
scores accepted at selective universities. Not to be overlooked, our younger students thrive at Donoho, too, with an
incredible 85% of our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders qualifying for the esteemed Duke TIP program.
Our students make us so proud in areas outside of academics also. From the 2011 state 1A championship volleyball team to
the awesome Wizard of Oz performances, our students are able to explore their varied interests and master an important
skill for college—how to use their time wisely and effectively. Donoho students learn how to maintain high grades in
demanding courses while being active participants in a variety of athletic, fine arts, leadership, and community service
activities, often balancing several activities during the same semester.
Our quality faculty and dedicated administration provide the necessary environment for success. They continue to challenge
our students to excel, consistently supporting their efforts to explore new ideas in a secure setting. These efficient
professionals log countless hours in training, preparing, teaching, assessing, and improving to ensure that all students receive
a rigorous academic foundation. In addition, most also serve outside the classroom as coaches of our many athletic and
academic teams or as sponsors of various clubs or organizations.
Providing our graduates with the tools they need to be successful in a college of their choice is what makes Donoho the
premiere college-preparatory school that it is. For us to continue to uphold our mission, enhance our curriculum, upgrade our
technology, and adapt our facilities to meet our students’ needs, we ask our friends and supporters for assistance beyond what
tuition income would provide. Your tax-deductible contributions to the Donoho School Annual Fund are an essential part of our
finances and will touch every student in some way. For those of you who have already donated, we thank you. If you do not
presently contribute, please consider a donation at this time and join the hundreds of alumni, parents, friends, and faculty who have
given generously in the past.
Thank you for helping us sustain the excellence that has been achieved at Donoho!
Sincerely,
Cynthia S. McCarty, Ph.D.

Vision & Mission
Dear Donoho Family and Friends,
The 2011-2012 Annual Report is a simple way of saying thank you for your support and
commitment to The Donoho School. The sacrifices you have made are appreciated, and
we are humbled by your confidence.
This year continues to be a celebration of the legacy of excellence that defines our school.
Our students have access to the highest quality programs, a full complement of both curricular and extra-curricular offerings and an experienced instructional staff – all of which are the
envy of schools across the State. The Donoho School continues to be a leader in education
where our vision, mission, and goals have created both the foundation and framework that
promote a culture of high performance – academically, athletically, and within all areas of the
fine arts and performing arts.
Each gift, no matter the amount, touches the lives of our students. Our goal each year is for
100% participation. We encourage every family to make a gift in any amount that is appropriate to their circumstances. Your participation encourages others to give, helps the school
receive foundation grants, and sends a message to our community that The Donoho School
does make a difference.
As an ambassador for the school, your positive endorsement of the program to the broader
community helps attract and retain mission-appropriate students. Our deepest thanks to those
of you whose gifts made last year’s annual fund campaign a success.
Most Sincerely,
Janice Hurd

Donor Recognition
The Donoho School appreciates those individuals who have
generously supported the Annual Fund. It takes the support of
the entire community - board members, faculty and staff, parents,
alumni, grandparents, alumni parents and friends - to achieve the
mission of The Donoho School. Through those that have given so
generously, we have ensured the continuing excellence of education that our students, faculty and parents have come to expect.
All contributions raised through the annual fund go directly into
our operating budget to help bridge the gap between tuition
revenue and our operating expenses. From faculty salaries to
day-to-day classroom programs, these investments help support
all areas of The Donoho School.

Freqently Asked Questions
What is the Annual Fund,
and why should I contribute?
The Annual Fund is the most common kind of giving
to The Donoho School. The Annual Fund provides
unrestricted, critical resources that support the
essentials of a quality program such as: faculty
professional development, small classes, technology
upgrades, and classroom equipment. Annual Fund
gifts help to cover the cost of a Donoho education,
a gap of over $1,000 per student. Essentially, the
Annual Fund accounts for approximately 20% of the
annual operating budget of the school. In a very real
sense, Annual Giving allows The Donoho School to
do things that set the School apart from other
institutions.
Why doesn’t Donoho just raise
tuition to make up the gap?
In order to cover all educational costs, Donoho
would have to dramatically increase tuition on an
annual basis. This increase would essentially exclude
many families and qualified students from the
community who help make Donoho the school that
it is. Every family ultimately benefits from a successful
Annual Fund program.
What is the easiest way to make my Annual Fund gift?
Who contributes to the Annual Fund?

What is so important about
participation in the Annual Fund?
Participating in the Annual Fund is vital to The
Donoho School when we apply for foundation grants
and funding for special projects. These organizations
often base their philanthropic decisions on the
strength of consistent support. They want to see that
Donoho believes in itself and its mission, and that its
constituents are committed to the school’s long-term
well-being.

How much should I give?
Every dollar to the Annual Fund counts; all gifts at
every level make an impact on our students.
Contributions range in size from $ 5 to $ 25,000 and
above; therefore, there is no “right” amount. We hope
that the Donoho community will participate at a level
appropriate for their circumstances.

Ways To Give
Gifts of Cash
The majority of the gifts we receive at The Donoho School are in the form of cash,
check or credit card. These contributions are tax-deductible for those who itemize
their returns.
In-Kind-Gifts
Items (computers, musical equipment, athletic equipment, etc.) and professional
services may be contributed to the school, dependent on the school’s needs. The
Development Office can help you determine the suitability of your gift, and, again,
you may receive a tax deduction if you itemize.
Matching Gifts
Many corporations will match gifts made by their employees and retirees to educational institutions. The personnel office of your company can provide that information for you as well as the paperwork required. The Donoho School will complete
the application process and recognize both donor and corporation for their gift.
Memorials & Honoraria
Gifts made in memory or honor of a family member or friend acknowledge special
relationships or may recognize a special event. These gifts to the school are tax
deductible.
Securities
A tax deduction is given for the full market value of gifts of securities and stocks
contributed to the school. If you hold securities that would incur a tax on capital
gains if sold, your gift could mean significant savings to you. Gifts of securities should
also be considered for establishing a planned deferred gift to the school.
Bequests
A gift provided for in your will may be a specific amount, a percentage of your
estate, the residual of the estate, or a certain item. The amount is fully deductible
in determining estate and inheritance taxes.
