Message from the President
Greetings Alumni Members and Friends,
Spring is finally here and summer is not far
behind! Quite a lot has happened since our last
Alumnigram and we have much to share with
you.
First, I want to thank the governing body
of the Chapter (Elected Officers, Committee
Chairs, and Past Presidents) for approving two
very big changes in the way we operate as a
Chapter. As many of you know by now, our
Chapter Meeting day and location during the
months of January – May changed from Friday
night to Saturday mornings from 9:30 – 11:30
AM. The location changed as well from the
Epiphany Church Parish Hall, Forestville, MD to
the Fairfax County South County Building, 8350
Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA. We were
nervous but our attendance has been great; but
more importantly our use of the building is FREE!
This cuts our yearly operational meeting expense
in half!!
Secondly, I want to thank the Scholarship
Dinner Dance Committee, led by CoChairpersons Velmenia Stanley and Letoya
Johnson for their excellent planning and
execution of our Chapter’s major fundraising
event. In addition, it was a fantastically busy
weekend from the Friday night “Denim and
Diamonds” Reception for President Evans (which
he thoroughly enjoyed), followed by the MEAC
Indoor Track and Field Tournament in Landover,
Maryland to the Dinner Dance itself. Over 540
persons were in attendance including University
Board of Trustee Chairman, Mr. Charlie Way
who said “I was truly impressed by the number of
Alumni in attendance and the Committee did an
excellent job in planning this event.” You can
expect a final report at the April Meeting.
Thirdly, the following weekend, University
Athletic Director Mr. Paul Bryant and Recruiting
Director Mr. Anthony Wright along with Ms.
LaSandra Robinson visited the Chapter to explain
the actions they are taking in support of their
departments as well as what the Alumni can do to
further support the University. Also in February,
we joined fellow Alumni to recognize our
outstanding scholars at the SCSU Foundation
Scholarship Gala where some of our Scholarship
Students from the Washington DC area attended
and culminated the weekend celebrating South
Carolina State University’s 120th Founder’s Day.
Finally, during the month of March, the
Chapter elected an outstanding team of dedicated
and loyal sons and daughters that are eager,
experienced, and ready to lead us for the next two
years. Congratulations to them all! They will be
installed at our May Chapter Meeting.

Hospitality, April 2016
Spring has finally, sprung. Therefore, we
must take advantage of this time to improve our
efforts in reaching out to fellow alumni.
Encouraging others may be the catalyst that they
need to become active with our chapter.
Moreover, it will demonstrate to all that we
Bulldogs are connected and sincerely care for
each other. “At the end of the day, it’s not about
what you have or even what you’ve
accomplished…it’s about who you’ve lifted up,
who you’ve made better, it’s about what you’ve
given back.”
We continue to demonstrate hospitality
toward fellow Bulldogs. Our condolences are
sent to John McNeil, ‘74 whose father passed,
Lenore Wright McMillan ’62, whose husband,
Vernon, passed and Veronica Williams Cooper
‘74, whose mother passed. Get-well wishes are
for Margaret Keller, ’57 and continued prayers for
Jim Washington, ’60. Hazel Seaberry, ’46;
Fannie Bailey, ’49; Lila Barton, ’56; Frances
Austin, ‘60 and Herbert Jackson, ’62 are
members who require continued support through
visits and prayers.
Let’s celebrate all who were born in the
month of April or are celebrating a special
anniversary. Remember, “the best time to
celebrate is whenever you can.”
Millicent Stackhouse, ‘87
Hospitality Chairman

the MEAC Tournament. They lost in the final
minutes and settled for a 2nd place finish in the
tournament. The men then traveled west to
participate in the CIT Tournament and lost to
Grand Canyon State in the opening round.
The Women surprised everyone by upsetting
the top seeded Bethune Cookman team in the

SCSU Board Chairman Op Ed
Charles Way, Chairman of the
SCSU Board of Trustees
recently wrote an Op Ed piece
that was published in the
Charleston Post and Courier.
The title of the article was “SC
State is Vital to ‘One
Orangeburg’ and State
Growth”. It is certainly
encouraging to see these
words from the Board Chairman. Read the article

SC Senate Finance Committee Approves
Loan Forgiveness
On April 4,
2016, the SC
Senate
Finance
committee
voted 13-6 in
favor of a
repaymentloan
restructuring
plan for
SCSU’s accumulated debt to the state. The
measure now heads to full Senate.
In summary, SC State will pay $355,000
annually for 15 years and if they maintain a
balanced budget each year, at the end of 15 years
the state would absorb the remaining 80% of loan.
Board Chairman Way and Vice Chairman Clark
were in attendance as well. This measure is
critical to having the sanctions (probation)
removed by the Southern Association of Colleges
and Secondary Schools (SACS).
Once approved by the full Senate, the bill
will go to Conference Committee to resolve
differences between the Senate bill and the House
bill. Final step is to send the bill to the Governor
to be signed into law.
Orangeburg Approves $1 million for SCSU
The Orangeburg City Council recently
approved $1 million to be provided to SCSU for
road maintenance and repair.
