the Yamim Noraim. Our Selihot program will include a study and discussion of The Wicked Son by David Mamet. The Wicked Son, co-published by Schocken and Nextbook, is part of the Jewish Encounters
Series, a publishing effort that brings together writers of the first rank
with people, ideas and events from the Jewish past. The Wicked Son
will be the basis of a great learning opportunity and lively discussion
about contemporary Jewish identity. Our study and discussion will be
led by Lori B. Sagarin, RJE, who is the Director of Congregational
Learning at Temple Beth Israel in Skokie, IL, the president of the
National Association of Temple Educators and

Elul and Love
by Rabbi Avi Olitzky
Our Sages suggest that
the Hebrew word Elul
(the name of this
month) is an acronym
for Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li – I am my
beloved’s and my beloved is mine (Song
of Songs 1:3). Many rabbis today use
this verse as additional poetry for the
Jewish wedding ceremony. This verse is
the quintessential statement of understanding and equality between lovers:
shared possession and shared existence.
However, the rabbis who elevated this
verse from Song of Songs also believed
that Song of Songs was an allegory for
the relationship between God and the
Jewish people and not passion poetry
between two physical lovers. This
speaks to the message we glean from the
teaching about the name of the month of
Elul. The month of Elul is a month for
kindling passion.
We may occasionally have moments of
distance, or, perhaps, outright spats in
our relationships. However, in the end,
we learn to work through those rough
times and strive to return to our beloved.
So, too, do we return to God during the
month of Elul. We are compelled to look
out at the world around us and work out
our rage with God—voicing our anger
and our ire. And through that anger and
rage, we must recognize what it is that
we appreciate.

Elul is not about generic passion. This
month leading up to the High Holidays is
about rekindling our love affair with
God. This month is about finding that
passion in our hearts and souls for God
as our Beloved and for God as our
Lover. Our love for God and God’s love
for us in a fiery sense is what should be
emblazoned upon our hearts these few
weeks.
If this is still far too abstract a concept,
at the very least, take time to think about
your relationship with God. Ask yourself: has something been missing? Have
either you or God been quiet and
removed? What is the reason for the distance? What is the reason for the alienation?
It is our legacy to use this month to
repair this relationship. We may buy
chocolate and send flowers to our human
loved ones, but we can also plant flowers
and make blessings over chocolate to
bring God into our lives. The possibilities are endless.
Let us begin mending our hearts by
patching it up with God’s love and our
love for the Divine. Let us begin working on the relationships around us with
God as the Barometer. Let us light the
spark beneath this Divine fling and make

Beth El Hires New Youth Director
We are excited to announce that the Beth El Youth Department has a
new director, Skylar Werde. Skylar's involvement in the
Minneapolis Jewish Community began as a counselor at Herzl Camp
and evolved into a 5-year career. Skylar has a passion for working
with children and teens, while promoting their growth in leadership
and social skills. He has a personal connection to USY having met
his future wife there (they will be married next year) and it taught
him to be a leader while helping him to discover his Jewish identity.
Skylar will also be attending the University of Minnesota as works
towards his Masters degree in School Psychology. Our youth department is thrilled to have Skylar! Please help welcome him and his
fiance, Erin to our Beth El Community.
Annual Meeting & Installation 2008 - Report
This year's annual meeting was attended by over 150 people. The
evening boasted fabulous food by our new in-house catering, Spirit of
Asia, exciting updates from affiliates and committees, special honors
and even some unexpected antics! To view the full Annual Report, go

Calling All Singers
If you love to sing, but are not able to commit to the full time schedule
of the Beth El choir, we'd love to have you as part of our auxiliary
singers. There are many times that we do special projects and like to
invite additional singers. Let us know and we'll put you on a list and
contact you when the opportunity arises. Email Cantor Audrey Abrams,
[email protected] or call 952-920-3512, ext. 109. If you
are able to make a larger commitment, consider the high holiday choir,
or the yearly choir that sings at Knollwood every month and a few
times a year in services. There is always room for more!
Adult B’nai Mitzvah Class
A new two-year cycle of study leading to a group b’nai mitzvah
ceremony on the first day of Shavu’ot of the year 2010, will begin
this Fall. Studies include Hebrew reading (beginning and intermediate
levels); the history, structure and content of the siddur; classical
rabbinic text; and the synagogue skills involved in conducting Shavuot
services, including Torah reading. A minimum of twelve participants
will be necessary for this program. If you are interested in registration

Hesed Project: Jonah participated in a JFCS Hag Sameach project. JFCS or Jewish Family and Children’s Services, helps families in need. Jonah made 10
blankets for boys and girls. He enjoyed making the blankets and felt good about this project knowing that they are going to families who really need them. In
addition to this project, Jonah purchased items to donate to JFCS for boys his age. Other mitzvot included learning about the Holocaust at the US Holocaust
Museum, participating in a shiva minyan, and building, repairing and painting furniture for families in transition through Bridging Inc.

Minneapolis Jewish Family and Children's Services(JFCS) organization holds the official scholarship fund. The fund has been set up to honor Maynard Katz for his strong personal connection to
Judaism, Israel and coaching young rising tennis stars. Brandon is a freshman on the varsity tennis
team at Hopkins High School as well as a TaRBuT teacher at Beth El Synagogue, Herzl camper,
and instigator of the JFCS Big Brother/ Big Sister "Pal to Pal" program. Brandon is the son of

Exciting Developments at the Aleph School
TaRBuT Program Resumes September 6
The coming school year (2008-2009) will feature a number of exciting changes to enhance the education of our little Beth El members
(and prospective members) and meet the needs of parents as we
enter the 21st century!
This is our largest incoming class in years over 55 students!
To better understand our parents’ desires for themselves and their
children, our staff and volunteers have listened carefully to our parents. Three focus groups have been held and a survey was recently
completed with a high response rate of 50%.
Overall, the comments have been very positive. The survey found
78% of the respondents rated their experience with the school as
excellent or outstanding. (The results will be posted on the Beth
El/Aleph School website soon.)
As a part of our listening to parents, we welcomed personal comments, criticisms and needs for our building and school. Many constructive comments were heard to make the school even better.
In response, exciting enhancements to the school are being implemented. They include:
• A new curriculum that incorporates more Jewish values, traditions
and holiday education into day to day teaching;
• A new Yom Shalaim (afternoon program) curriculum teaching
math, science and pre-reading skills;
• A new Peer Relationship Class for all of our students. Within this
class the children will learn tools for developing friendships and
positive self esteem;
• New professional development training is being planned for our staff;
• Each of our teachers will be visiting another pre-school in our
community to see new and different techniques and practices that
can be used at the Aleph School. The teachers will share what they
have learned with our entire staff;
• A special committee has been formed to investigate expanding the
hours of operation and the feasibility of offering infant care.
Recommendations are due in the next 30 days;
• A new Parent Board is being formed with a new chair, Stephanie
Snyder;
• A new “Coffee With The Director” is planned for parents to provide ongoing feedback to the school and learn of school activities
and developments.
While all these changes are happening, the school will maintain the
warm, heimish atmosphere that has made the school successful over
the decades. In addition, the Capital Campaign currently underway
will be making significant physical changes to our Aleph School to
allow us to provide better facilities and programming for our children. We encourage the greater Beth El

Kever Avot Cemetery Memorial Service
The annual Kever Avot Cemetery Memorial Service will be
held at Beth El Memorial Park, located at 38th and Winnetka
Avenues North, on Sunday, September 28, at 11:30 a.m.
This service provides a peaceful time for individuals and families to pay tribute to their departed loved ones interred at the
cemetery. The service will be led by Beth El clergy. All
members, family and friends are welcome to attend.
Teen Program - NEW and IMPROVE!
You don’t have to sit in services to pray. You don’t have to
sit in a classroom to learn. Teens from 8th through 12th
grades are invited to particpate in Beth El’s first-ever “Stroll
& Learn”. We’ll stroll around as a group, focusing through
a Jewish lens on the deeper impact the world has on our
inner-selves. The group will meet outside the Fiterman
Chapel, near the coat Room at 11:30 a.m. on Day One of
Rosh Hashanah and at 5:45 p.m. on Yom Kippur.

Healthy Living
Volunteer for Loaves and Fishes

Upcoming opportunities to volunteer at
Loaves and Fishes are Tuesday, September
23 and Tuesday, November 25. We provide
a wonderful meal for people in need in
South Minneapolis. This is a one time commitment that you will never forget. Call

Healthy living begins in the home. In order to
optimize current and future health, it is important to create a nontoxic, nurturing home environment. To do so, start with addressing the following elements:
Lawn Care
The outdoor home environment is as important as the indoor environment.
What you can do:
Choose nontoxic alternatives to herbicides. Many herbicides are considered to be carcinogens. Chemicals on your lawn wind up on anyone that
plays in the yard (adults, kids, pets); Xeriscape-cover your yard with
native grasses and plants; Adjust your lawn mower to its highest setting.
The longer blades of grass will develop stronger root systems and resist
weed growth; Leave grass clippings on the lawn to add nitrogen to the
soil; Plant an organic garden
Cleaning Products
According to Robert Rountree, MD, the average home contains 3-10 gallons of hazardous materials. The same products that we use to clean our
homes can be toxic to our bodies.
What you can do:
Take an inventory of your home and all of the products that could be considered "toxic." Be on the lookout for nontoxic alternatives for each one;
Choose a dishwashing detergent such as Seventh Generation’s, that is
both phosphate and chlorine-free. Phosphates can cause algae blooms in
lakes and ponds; Buy non-chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach creates toxins
that can be harmful to your health. In addition, chlorine fumes may be
irritating to breathe for people with allergies and asthma; Get rid of
unwanted chemicals safely. Contact your local trash collection service to
find out how to dispose of them properly. Never dump materials in the
backyard; If any toxic products do exist in the home, lock and store them
in a place where children will not be able to reach them. Remember to
lock up prescription, over-the counter medicines, supplements and herbal
medicines as well.
Personal Care Products
An owner of a natural beauty line once said, “You should never put anything on your body that you wouldn’t put in your mouth.” With that said,
the long list of ingredients on personal care products can be confusing. If
you have a question about a particular one, try consulting “The
Consumer’s Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients” by Ruth Winter, MS.
What you can do:
Take an inventory of all of your personal care products, including toothpaste, shampoo, soaps, moisturizer, deodorant, etc. Be on the lookout for
products with artificial preservatives or chemicals. Many substances are
absorbed through the skin, this does include the skin care products you
use (also the chlorine in swimming pools - swim in clean lakes when
possible); Buy all natural products without

children on July 15. A total of 6,264 meals

These programs address a
wide range of congregant
and community needs,
requiring different degrees
of participation. No matter
how much time you have
to contribute, or whether
you are looking to get
involved on an individual
or family basis, Gemilat
Hesed has an opportunity
waiting for you.
The need for food is greater than ever. Food usage is up
26% from last year. STEP is providing 650 household
assists each month. Last month over 35,000 pounds of
food were distributed. Seventy per cent of the households have children and over 3000 children benefited
from the STEP food shelves. Most families are
employed at minimal wages and need emergency food
by the end of the month. Our food drive makes a significant impact in helping them with the current demands.
Especially needed are spaghettios, applesauce, canned
fruit, tomato soup, canned peas, peanut butter, jelly,
macaroni and cheese, cereal, and snacks such as crackers and granola bars. Please take home one empty bag
after Rosh Hashanah services and try to bring back two
(double the mitzvah), filled with non-perishable foods,
beginning Wednesday, October 8th for the Yom Kippur
Food Drive.

Switch your toothpaste to one that doesn’t contain Sodium
Laryl Sulfate (SLS), a detergent that can also be a skin and
mouth irritant.

air quality. Of particular importance is the bedroom environment, since each person spends between 7- 10 hours
there each day.
What you can do:
Choose locally grown, organic produce whenever possible.
Apples, grapes, green beans, pears, peaches, strawberries and
spinach have been shown to have especially high pesticide
residues; Avoid food preservatives such as saccharin, aspartame and olestra; Avoid processed foods; Know where your
fish comes from. Unfortunately, fish-an intrinsically healthy
food-often contains PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and/ or
mercury. Choose smaller fish, which do not bioaccumulate as
many toxic chemicals and choose fish from more pristine
waters such as those in Alaska; Avoid tap water which has
harmful chemicals, or use a water filter system.
What you can do:
Open windows whenever possible to circulate air; Clean
indoor air with plants and air filters. Plants help to oxygenate the air we breathe, while filters help to remove
impurities from indoor air; Change the filter in your residential furnace and air conditioning system regularly. The
Filtrete Ultra Allergen filter is endorsed by the American
Lung Association and has a recommended change interval
of three months; If possible, replace carpet in the bedroom
with wood floors. Carpet collects molds, fungi and other
respiratory irritants. If you do have carpeting, vacuum regularly; Avoid sleeping in a room that has been recently carpeted. New carpet releases harmful chemicals such as
formaldehyde into the air. Open windows and air the room
out for at least a week before sleeping in it. Better yet,
have new carpet installed while on vacation!

Developing A Volunteer Transportation Program
In Your Faith Community or Organization
On Tuesday, September 16, 2008, from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.,
learn how to create a transportation program that promotes
safety and reduces risk. You will learn successful strategies to recruit, train, and manage volunteer drivers as well
as the essentials of risk management. Senior Community

other staff who would like to share this information with

Wellstone!
A play by Mark Rosenwinkel, with music and lyrics by
Larry Long – opens Sept. 2 at the Sabes JCC during the
Republican National Convention and runs through Sept.
21. Wellstone! is a carefully researched play that spans
the 19-year career of Paul Wellstone. It is a play about a
public servant, living and working through a set of core
values that were often in conflict with the institutions he
