CHAPTER 1
Lucy was a clown. She looked the part… with her big brown eyes, long black
hair hidden under a big afro wig that was white with rainbow polka-dots and a
large red nose. Lucy wore red and white candy cane stripped pants and a white
top with paint splats on it. She also wore a black bow tie. Lucy liked pizza, lolly
pops and making people happy. Even though she liked making people happy
and a clown’s job is to bring happiness and joy to people’s lives, Lucy hated
being a clown! Life in the circus was always so hectic and there was always so
much pressure to get her act right! There was one thing that helped her through
each day… it was the thing that she loved most of all: her doll Lyla.
Lucy had been with the ‘Afro-OZ’ circus at the age of 5 when her parents died
and she ran away from the orphanage. A kind old fortune teller looked after her
and Lyla was a gift from the old fortune teller and the little doll had been with
Lucy through all the good times and bad. Lucy could even hear Lyla talking to
her in her head. She never told anyone about it in case they thought she was
crazy, but Lucy was always glad to have Lyla around to keep her company.
Lucy got up early in
the
morning
and
headed to the circus
tent. The circus tent
walls were blue and
purple and the roof
was yellow and orange
and on the inside the
walls and roof were
green. There were lots
of rows of seats
surrounding the stage,
some
trampolines,
trapezes and stands.
All the performers
were practicing and
preparing
for
the
night’s show.
7
Lucy went to get Stripes the zebra and Sammy the monkey ready for a practise.
With her pets and the spinning-plates equipment, Lucy went to a clear space.
She got her plates spinning and stood backwards. She jumped up and did a back
flip and landed it. She was so happy with herself she tried again and landed it
she did it again and again. She landed them all! Lucy stood there beaming. She
was certain her performance would be absolutely perfect. She knew that if it
wasn’t, she would get in serious trouble with the grumpy old ring master! She
shivered at the thought.
“Lucy, your costume is ready… come try it on” shouted the ring master. When
she finished she headed to her caravan to rest before the big show.

CHAPTER 2
Lucy could smell the flames on the sticks that the brave little monkey, Sammy,
was holding. Lucy trusted Sammy a lot so it would be disappointing if he failed,
Lucy knew he wouldn’t fail, but she wouldn’t be surprised if she failed. She had
done so well in the practise, and she didn’t want to let the ring master down.
The dancing lion had just finished his act, and it was now time for Lucy’s act.
Lucy could see Stripes the zebra waiting for her out in the spotlight, Lucy’s
loyal monkey Sammy sat quietly on her shoulder waiting for Lucy to make her
way on to the stage. Sweat was running down her face from the burning flames.
Alright, she was going to do it. Lucy ran as fast as she could onto the stage.
Some little kids screamed when they saw Lucy. This happened to Lucy a lot,
she hated being a clown, but she loved making people laugh. Lucy did her round
off then her backflip, for a moment Lucy thought that she was about to make it
but she hit her head on Stripes’ back, Stripe whinnied, Sammy fell off Lucy’s
back. Lucy screamed, she fell onto her back on the hard floor. Sammy dropped
the flaming sticks onto the ground, the whole audience gasped; they screamed
“WE NEED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER!” The ring master immediately ran into
the room holding a fire extinguisher.
“What have you done?” cried the cantankerous ring master as he held his breath
and sprayed the ground. The security men helped the audience out of the circus
tent. Everyone was coughing and gasping. Lucy lay on the floor out of breath;
Stripes was so frightened that he had run out of the room in shock.
“No! Stripes come back!” cried Lucy.
The ring master was so angry and upset.
“What have you done? You almost destroyed the whole tent and all the people
in it. That tent cost me $20, 000 and you would have been paying for it, you
should be glad that I got a fire extinguisher just in time.”
The angry ring master seemed to complain for about half an hour.
“I’m…I’m sorry I didn’t mean to, I tried.” Said poor Lucy.
“You will NEVER be successful will you Lucy.” Said the ring master.
9
Lucy was heartbroken, never be successful at Afro Oz? Lucy threw off her afro
wig onto the floor and ran out of the door.
10
CHAPTER 3
Lucy ran as fast as she could away from the circus and ended up at the old
beautiful Billabong downtown. “What a beautiful place!” she said. She stared at
the clear blue, slightly green, water and started down the hill to it. She sat down
and started talking to Lyla, her pocket doll.
“Oh, Lyla! Why is the ring master being so mean to me? I didn’t do anything
wrong… Well, much...It’s not like I burnt the whole place to the ground or
anything! I know I ran away from a show, but that doesn’t mean I am the most
embarrassing thing that has ever happened to them, does it?”
“No child.” Lucy heard in her head from Lyla, “They are just overreacting. You
could go back soon and regain your strength against them and stand up for
yourself, or you could stay and live on the road for the rest of your life. Do the
right thing, I know you will. Now let me sleep. It is tiring connecting and
talking to you. I will tell you when I am awake.”
Lucy just sat there, wondering
about what Lyla had said. She
realised then just how tired
she was. She leaned back and
fell asleep.
“Lyla, la la la, Lyla. WAKE
UP LUCY!!!!
She woke up with a start and
glared at her naughty doll for
waking her up. “What did you
wake me up for? I was having
the nicest dream!” she just sat
there and glared at the doll for
about 5 minutes before she
realised where she was.
“Child, you will get a surprise
visitor very soon.” Lucy heard
in her head, “Do not be afraid.
Be nice to him and do not
11
worry. I will be here when he arrives. Good night again child. Enjoy your
dream.”
Lucy fell asleep again and dreamt about her surprise visitor. She dreamt that he
was a handsome prince who would save her and her doll from the horrible
circus and ask her to marry him and live in a beautiful castle and all her hopes
and dreams come true. All dreams can turn into nightmares though. And Lucy’s
dream did.
BBBRUM!!! BBRRUMM!!!
Lucy woke up with a shock and accidentally threw her doll into the billabong.
“NOOOOO!!!!!!”
12
CHAPTER 4
Lucy was despairing, staring into the billabong balling her eyes out. As she
cried, she realised that the billabong was rising from her tears which would
make it harder to find Lyla. This made her cry even more. Eventually Lucy
calmed herself down and looked up at the black leather clothed bikie who was
staring at her with his dark brown eyes.
“Who are you and why are you here disturbing the perfect peace and quiet of the
billabong with your horrible motorbike?” Lucy demanded.
“My name is Max and I’m sorry I startled you.” said the bikie, “I like to come to
this sit at this billabong. It has a special meaning for the brothers and sisters of
my Noongar people. Why are you here sitting all alone?”
Lucy explained to Max that she was a clown in a circus and she was getting
ready for an act when it went terribly wrong and she caused a small fire, but it
did get put out before too much damage was done. She also told Max how angry
the ring master had been and that she ran away from the circus after being
shouted at for what felt like forever.
Max introduced Lucy to
his pet lizard ‘Furry’.
Looking strangely at
Furry, Lucy started to
giggle, pretty soon she
built up to a laugh and
finally
Lucy
started
laughing at the top of her
lungs. With a straight face
Max looked at Lucy and
asked,
“What’s
so
funny?”
Lucy tried to calm herself down and between giggles she said, “You called your
scaly lizard ‘Furry’?”
“Yeah. Why not?”
13
“It just doesn’t sound right naming a scaly lizard with a no fur ‘Furry’!”
“Oh well, it doesn’t matter now”.
Furry, who was annoyed because of his name, jumped into the water to rescue
the doll. When he came up he was struggling to swim and sadly drowned
pushing the doll under water even further than before…
14
CHAPTER 5
Furry’s tail was the only thing Max and Lucy could see left of him. Max was
both sad and furious. He suddenly burst out with anger, “If you hadn’t lost your
grip on that stupid doll, I wouldn’t have lost my beloved lizard!”
Lucy looked confused and scared at first but then thought of a comeback.
“Lyla is NOT stupid! If you had just slowed down and not made so much noise
with that dumb bike, then my little Lyla would be in my hands, not deep at the
bottom of a billabong, and your pet ‘Furry’ (what a stupid name for a slimy little
lizard) would be safely in your hands, and we wouldn’t be having this argument
right now!”
Max was taken aback by this outburst and started sobbing.
Lucy looked at Max, “Oh, I am so sorry for insulting your choice of names and
yelling at you. Are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Replied Max, “Furry is my only companion and I just don’t
know how I will cope without him!”
“I know exactly what you mean. Lyla is my version of your Furry and I am
going crazy thinking of having to live my life without her! That is why I yelled
at you. I was hurt by the fact that you think Lyla is stupid. I just don’t know
what I am going to do without her!” Lucy sobbed.
“I was just angry” exclaimed Max, “It really was my fault”
“No, it was mi….”
“Shush!” interrupted Max as quick as a flash. He grabbed Lucy’s chin and
turned her head towards the billabong. “What is it?” Lucy whispered.
“Can’t you see it?” Max said.
“See what?” Lucy asked.
“Never mind”, said Max. He looked away and heard the splish splosh of water.
He looked back.
15
Lyla was on a lily pad!
Max was curious about Lyla. “How can she do this?” thought Max. He looked
at Lucy, she was still sobbing. He looked back; Lyla was so close to the shore.
Max could nearly reach her, nearly that is. Max walked to his motorbike and
saw Furry’s food. He shed a tear and looked at Lucy. She was walking to the
billabong. Max looked at the billabong, Lyla was on the shore!
16
CHAPTER 6
Max was stunned. After all his years of aboriginal healing he had never seen a
doll come to life after falling into the billabong. He rushed over and picked up
the doll. Suddenly, he heard a voice in his head, “Hello, Max!” Max fell
backwards and almost dropped the doll back into the water. He looked over at
Lucy. She was still sobbing. He picked up the doll again.
“My name is Lyla,” said the voice.
‘This was really fascinating,’ thought
Max, ‘A doll that moves and speaks
in people’s mind. Wow.’ He put Lyla
down again and looked away. When
he looked back, Lyla was gone. The
billabong glowed. Max inspected the
water and noticed there were bubbles.
Wait, two sets of bubbles?
What else was down there?
Max was anxious to find out, so he
looked away one more time....
“Lyla!” Max looked over at Lucy
who had just ran over to the wet doll.
She squeezed Lyla and all the water
dripped out onto her. Max felt
something wet on his leg so he
looked down.
“Furry!” he picked him up. “You are alive! It’s a MIRACLE!”
Max went over to Lucy.
“Here”, Lucy said, while holding out Lyla, “She wants to talk to you,” she gave
her to Max.
‘Thankyou,’ Max thought.
It looked to Max like Lyla was smiling back at him.
17
“I guess I’ll go back to the circus now,” Lucy said quietly.
Max got up. “Are you really ready to go back to the circus?”
“Well, I live there”
“What about your family?”
“They are my family. Well, most of them.” Lucy and Max walked over to the
circus.
A loudspeaker turned on.
“Roll up! Roll up! Don’t miss the amazing show! Tonight, the dancing lion,
Lucy the clown and John the gymnast!”
Lucy went over to the entrance. “Bye, I guess”
She went in.
“Hi there mate!” Max turned around. There was an old man with jaggered teeth
and a grey beard. “Would you like a free ticket?”
Max smiled.
“Yeah. Thanks, mate” He took the ticket and went in.
“Ladies and gentlemen, introducing, the dancing lion!” A lion came on stage
doing the cha-cha.
After that, Lucy went on. ‘She was amazing,’ thought Max. He left before John
the gymnast came on.
Later, Max found Lucy. “You were great,” he said. “You know what, I think I
could be in the circus”
Lucy laughed. “Sure you could”
“No, I really think so. I’ll go asked your boss now,” he walked off.
Max got a job as a motor cyclist for the circus. Max and Lucy did an act
together a couple of times and the reviews were great. Lyla and Furry became
the best of friends.
To simplify things, they lived Happily Ever After!
