Barbara Levin to Resign Her Position as 2nd VP
It is with regret and reluctance that President Shirley
Henderson accepted the resignation of 2nd Vice President
Barbara Levin, who will begin a new project that will require
a great deal of her time and focus and will likely limit her ability to
continue as Vice President. “She has done an exceptional job to bring us
outstanding programs for the past 18 months, and we all wish her well for
the future,” Ms Henderson said.
...According to the DCLW Bylaws
“In the event of a vacancy, the Executive Committee shall appoint a temporary
replacement, and an interim election shall be held at the next General Membership
Meeting.”
Emile Milne Appointed to Fill Vacancy
At the Dec. 6 Executive Committee meeting, Emile Milne was nominated
and appointed to serve as 2nd Vice President. Prior to the Dec. 13th social
event, we will have a short business meeting for the purpose of electing the
new 2nd Vice President.
Emile Milne, a four-year resident of Leisure World, has been active in the
Democratic Club for nearly half that time, serving on the Hospitality,
Communications and Program Committees.
Emile joined the club after retiring from Capital Hill in 2010, where he
served for 23 years in the office of Congressman Charles Rangel of New
York. As legislative director and press secretary to the former Ways and
Means Committee Chairman, he handled legislation and public relations, as
well as political matters, in Washington and in Upper Manhattan, one of the
nation’s most diverse Congressional districts, and home to the vibrant
community of Harlem.
As the Congressman’s principle advisor on foreign affairs, drug policy, and
veterans issues, Emile traveled widely in the Caribbean and Latin America,
and also visited China and Korea.
In 2002, he spearheaded Congressman Rangel’s successful initiative to
convene a Special Joint Session of Congress in New York City. The historic
event commemorated the first anniversary of the nine-eleven terrorist attack
and the unity that healed the nation in its aftermath. It was held in Federal
Hall, the site of the first U.S. Congress in 1790.

Prior to his government service, Emile worked for almost 20 years in
journalism, as a reporter at the San Francisco Examiner and New York Post,
and as an editor at Black Enterprise magazine. He has been a contributor
to the Amsterdam News, Essence and Newsweek magazines, and The Root
online.
He was director of the Community News Service, a minority journalism
training program; and the founding editor of the Atlanta Tribune, a business
publication. He was also an organizer of the New York Association of Black
Journalists.
Born in the Republic of Panama, Emile grew up in
New York City and attended Georgetown, St. John’s
and Pace Universities. He and his wife, Claudette
Warner-Milne have three children and five
grandchildren.
Emile is pictured here with Ruth Love at the
January 2011 meeting.
There will be no January DCLW meeting nor
Donkey Dispatch, in order for everyone to take a
well- deserved breather after a two year, hardfought campaign with many events and
celebrations. Let’s all take a moment to exhale!
Meanwhile, we’ll see you all at the 40th Anniversary and Holiday Social on
December 13th. We send holidays greetings to our members of all faiths, in
accordance with the Democratic Party’s acceptance of everyone in the “big
tent:” Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Feliz Navidad, Beautiful Solstice,
Happy Bodhi Day(Buddhist), Happy Kwaanza, Happy Mawlid al Nabi
(Mohammed’s birthday), Happy Makar Sankrati (Hindu kite festival), and
Happy New Year!
After all that we’ll see you at the meeting on February 14th, so......
