Dear Friends,
Tu BiSh’vat is the Jewish Arbor Day, the anniversary of the trees. Believe
it or not, this month of Shevat (usually falling in the wintery month of
February) is the beginning of harvesting the fruit of the trees in Israel. The
Torah tells us we cannot harvest the fruit for three years in order to maintain
the health of the tree. We count these three years from one Tu BiSh’vat to
the next, making this holiday essential for farmers.

The wisdom of farmers and our agricultural ancestry is immense. In his
book, 40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World, Howard Buffett,
Warren Buffett’s son, reflects on his life as a farmer and philanthropist. His book provides
further relevance to the wise and cyclical nature of farming and life in general.

He asserts that each of us has “40 chances” to till our soil and harvest our yield – between
the time we are given our inheritance from the previous generation and when we must pass
it on to the next generation. Forty chances will pass whether or not we are intentional about
how we want to make our mark in the world. Forty chances will pass whether or not we are
careful about the messages and values we give our children. Forty chances will pass whether
or not we are thoughtful about what we leave behind. This is a beautiful metaphor and,
during this season of Tu’BiShvat, gives us a framework through which we can reflect on our
place in the world, regardless of whether we work the land.

I take Buffett’s challenge to heart for Temple Israel. We are at different stages of our “40
chances.” Some of us are just beginning to make our mark, having just come of age and been
handed from the previous generation the baton of responsibility for Judaism. Others are in
the midst of this work – working hard to make Judaism relevant in this fast-paced, technological
world. And then there are those who are ready to conclude their work, having lived a life of
Judaism and passed it on to their children and grandchildren.
At Temple Israel, each of us – every member of this enduring congregation – has been given
the responsibility of keeping this community vibrant, wherever we are in our forty seasons.
I feel blessed to be in partnership with so many who care so deeply for this great congregation.
Temple has been a strong Jewish voice in the city of Minneapolis for more than 135 years.
Because we have always been an innovative, future-oriented congregation and leaders in
Jewish education, Jewish camping, interfaith dialogue and social justice, our address defines
our mission and vision.
Clergy Voice . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2
Now is our time to join hands and be intentional about what we do with the years we have
left before we give to our children and grandchildren what was once given to us. We must
look to our Jewish traditions and teachings to make important decisions about our Temple
community. With our collective wisdom, and with your thoughtful involvement, we will
make good decisions, just as our parents and grandparents did for us.

Remembering A Best Friend And Beloved Parents
The Sidney, Arlene and Robert Shapiro Memorial Endowment
Joey Shapiro grew up with his best friend.
It was his brother, Bobby.
They played tennis and golf together,
skied, and shared dreams and hopes. Just
one year apart in age, they were inseparable.
“We did everything together,” Joey said of
Bobby. “He was one of the kindest, most

His leadership accounted for much of the
business’ success,” Joey said. Another year
later, Alan joined the business full time, as
well.

generosity throughout the community

he died while the boys were still in their late teens and early
20s. Their beloved mother, Arlene, eventually remarried
Irving Efron but she, too, died at a young age.
Just four years after their father’s shop was sold, Bobby,
Joey and Alan found themselves applying what their parents
had taught them. Bobby started a new print company as a
means of reestablishing the Shapiros in the printing business.
The idea was for Bobby to run the business day in and
day out, while Joey and Alan would serve as partners and
help as much as they could as they completed their university
studies and launched their careers.
Shapco Printing was formed, and within a year Joey joined
the business full time. “Bobby would work 100-hour weeks
