PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
LET’S CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE
OUR YOUTH AND OURSELVES
By Steven Keiles, Temple President
I had the privilege of attending the
Family Shabbat Services on the first
Friday of last month. For our Family
Service we have the honor of hearing
from our Youth Choir, which is led
by Kendra Cogert. It is really a special
event to see how engaged these 3rd
through 6th graders have become. This
is just one area where we are helping
lay the groundwork for developing
our future congregational leaders. I
would strongly encourage everyone to
experience a Friday night Family Shabbat Service (the first Friday
September - June), if you are able, as it is really something special
- plus, the oneg snacks tend to be very good!
Let’s move ahead to kids about five years older or so. Now Temple
Israel has a group of very engaged teenagers. They are participating
in our youth group, referred to as ANDI as well as the leading
their region of the national youth Reform your group, NFTY. I
was recently approached by the current ANDI President, Miriam
Berro Krugman, about the teens becoming more involved in the
Temple Israel “adult” committees and there was a strong interest in
working more closely with our current Temple Board of Directors.
As a result, we just held a joint board meeting last week! It was
quite the event to see the entire boards of both the ANDI Youth
Group and our congregation sharing bread, prayer and ideas. This
is our future and I can tell you we are in great hands.
As we are coming to the end of the calendar year, I want to take
this opportunity to make sure all of you are taking full advantage
of your potential tax deductions. We are still accepting High
Holy Day pledges for those who have not had the opportunity
to contribute yet, but were planning on participating. For those
who have already made their commitments and are looking for an
end-of-year deduction, please consider an additional gift before
December 31st to take advantage of the deduction. We are in
good financial shape at this point in time, but are always planning
for the future. This is a great transition to discuss our Capital
Campaign and how the future is being addressed.
The great news about our Capital Campaign is that this
congregation came together and built our amazing new facility.
Well, not quite new, but fairly new. So first, this is a thank you to
every member of this congregation who had a hand in our great
facility, it was truly a group effort we can all be very proud of.
We are still in the process of paying off our original $1 million
loan, but we are ahead of schedule. This has allowed us to save
money on potential interest expense. For those with remaining
commitments who are able to accelerate their commitments, it
will further allow us to save even more money. As a reminder to
everyone, our leadership had the forethought to ensure that our
great facility will remain as pristine as it was the day we reentered.
All the additional funds donated towards the Capital Campaign
after all expenses have been paid are earmarked for our Hidur
Mitzvah Fund for beautification and long-term maintenance. This
fund has already been established and is currently being managed
by our Temple Israel Foundation. There have already been some
very generous donations, so we are well on our way to ensuring our
building will be well taken care of, as it moves from infancy into
adulthood. Our building is so much more than brick and mortar.
The energy that fills our halls is inspiring. On any given Sunday
during Torah Center, there is so much happening throughout
the building, it is an honor to be a part of it. I would encourage
the Torah Center parents to try and stay for some of these great
activities on occasion, your kids will very much appreciate you
being in the building.
I have to tell you that I am great with names, and great with
recognizing faces, but I am terrible at putting the two together.
So if you see me walking through the building, feel free to reintroduce yourself, and I promise to try and do better to put
the two together. There are so many great things happening
throughout the end of the year there will be many opportunities
for us to meet and schmooze (my all-time favorite Yiddish word).
I will leave you with two of my favorite quotes that I hope we all
think about when we speak or act. “I don’t speak because I have
the power to speak; I speak because I don’t have the power to
remain silent” – Rabbi A.Y. Kook Caring for other Jews cuts to
the core of who we are as a people. “People often avoid making
decisions out of fear of making a mistake. Actually the failure to
make decisions is one of life’s biggest mistakes.” – Rabbi Noah
Weinberg. So let’s all make the best decisions we can every day.
TORAH STUDY
With Rabbi Moskowitz
Saturday Mornings
8:45 - 10:00 a.m.
Rabbi Moskowitz facilitates this participatory weekly Torah
study. Each week, this enthusiastic group examines the parashat
hashavuah (weekly Torah portion) and discusses its meaning
and relevance through the use of traditional commentaries and
personal reflection. This Torah study is for everyone. No previous
background or knowledge of Hebrew is required.
Come one time or every week!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
FOCUS ON NEW MEMBERS!
Karen & Eli Ben-Shmuels and Family
Temple Israel and taking their preschoolers to our Tot Shabbat.
The Ben-Shmuels are looking for long term relationships and
a sense of community for themselves and their children. They
hope that their children will become Bat and Bar Mitzvah at
our Temple. Karen looks forward to connecting with others who
share common interests. The Ben-Shmuels are excited about
getting involved with Temple Israel, and they all look forward
to Ilana’s having a successful second year at our Torah Center.
John-David & Michelle Currey and Family
Karen and Eli joined our Temple in September 2014. Their
blended family consists of 20-year-old Jacob, who is a student
at UC Irvine; 16-year-old Jordan, who is a student at Clayton
Valley High School; 6-year-old Ilana, a first grader at Hopkinson
Elementary in Rossmoor, and 2-year-old Zachary, in preschool at the Alpert JCC. Jacob and Jordan were B’nai Mitzvot
at Temple Beth Emet in Anaheim. Ilana loves dolls, writing,
drawing, playing with her friends, and swimming, while Zachary
loves Mickey Mouse, Legos, cars and pirates.
As residents of Seal Beach for six years, the Ben-Shmuels have
indulged in their love of the Anaheim Ducks (hockey), reading
and travel. They enjoy spending time together with family and
friends, going to the beach, attending outdoor concerts and trips
to Disneyland.
In addition, the Ben-Shmuels have wasted no time getting
involved in the Long Beach Jewish community: Karen and Eli
both volunteer at the J, where Karen is involved as the co-chair
of the Parent Student Association for the preschool and ECE
Committee, and Eli is a member of the Alpert JCC Board and
Executive Committee. Karen just completed the Alpert New
Leaders Forum and will also become chair of the HUM parents
organization for our religious school, where she looks forward
to working with Sharon Amster-Brown and Deb Lewis. Karen
sits on the Board of the Federation Tower and is a Girl Scout
co-leader. As if being a Mom and volunteering weren’t enough,
Karen is a public relations consultant to an architecture firm. Eli
is an attorney for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Karen was raised Reform and her family belonged to Temple
Beth David. Eli grew up in a Conservative household and
belonged to Temple Beth Emet. Karen’s grandparents were
members of Temple Israel and her parents were married here, so
she has lots of friends in three generations at our Temple. More
recently, she heard about Temple Israel from her association with
the Alpert JCC preschool, and other families who were joining

When John-David Currey and his wife, Michelle, were looking
around recently for a synagogue to call home, they put a premium
on an easy going atmosphere, but with a strong religious base.
They wondered whether they could have both.
“Temple Israel was the atmosphere we were looking for. Nothing
against other temples, but we wanted to find a place where we
could drop off our kids in shorts and still feel a strong spiritual
base,” Currey said. Both 7 year old daughter, Jenna, and 4 year
old son, Ben, attend Torah Center.
Currey runs a company in Seal Beach that creates trailers for
Hollywood - the ones you see in theaters, not the ones with
wheels - and Michelle works as a pediatric occupational therapist.
John-David loves the thrill of flying small planes. “There’s no
better escape than going up 5,000 feet,” he said. Michelle loves
all kinds of water sports, while Jenna loves to sing, dance, and act.
Ben is a soccer fanatic.
John-David grew up Catholic in Los Alamitos. His wife grew
up attending Temple Beth Shalom in Tustin. Before they had
kids they decided they wanted to raise them Jewish.
Temple Israel became even more welcoming, he said, when he
and Michelle ran into old high school friends Loren Kaiser, and
Sharon Amster-Brown at Torah Center.
“We’ve enjoyed every moment at Temple Israel!,” he said.
This is a new membership committee project. We are trying
to interview new members within the last year. However, if
you haven’t been contacted (no matter when you became a
member) and wish to have your family’s bio in a Kol Y’srael
edition, please phone Karen Calechman at (562) 420-9856, or
email her at [email protected]
B’NAI MITZVAH / ANDI / YOUNG ADULTS
THIS MONTH’S B’NAI MITZVAH
My name is Zoe De Young and I’m
an 8th grader at Hughes Middle
School. I am a GATE student and
in our school’s advanced orchestra
and jazz band. I play electric and
string bass. I am also in my schools’
leadership program for 8th graders,
WEB (“Where Everyone Belongs).
Outside of school, I play the guitar
and take lessons at Jammin’ Music. I
also have participated in Girl Scouts
since kindergarten, and my mom is our
ZOE DEYOUNG
troop leader. For my Mitzvah Project I
November 14, 2015
am volunteering at NKLA (No-Kill
Los Angeles) in West LA. It is a non-profit organization that
promotes an initiative led by Best Friends Animal Society. Their
goal is to try to end euthanizing at all LA shelter animals by
the year 2017. NKLA finds homeless cats and dogs and cares
for them until they are adopted, also spays/neuters pets, and has
community events for local pet owners. I want to thank everyone
who has helped me prepare for my important day. I look forward
to sharing my simcha with my family, friends, and community.
Thank you!
My name is Jody Goldman and I’m
being called to the Torah as a Bat
Mitzvah on November 21, 2015.
I am in 8th grade at Oak Middle
School. I am a member of both the
zero period ShowCase choir and the
ShowStoppers competition choir at
Oak. I love to perform, travel, and
compete with my school choir friends.
I have been attending Torah Center
since 3rd grade. I always had a lot of
JODY GOLDMAN fun at the sleep away camp in Irvine
November 21, 2015
and singing in the youth choir. I have
gone to Camp Newman in Northern California for the past
4 summers with friends from Temple Israel, and I love it. For
my Mitzvah Project I worked with the Casa Youth Shelter in
Los Alamitos. I toured the shelter and learned a lot about the
work they do in providing temporary housing and counseling to
teens in crisis. I also worked with Casa Youth Shelter to host an
information table about the shelter and their services at a forum
on domestic violence that was held at Temple Israel. I collected
money for the Casa Youth Shelter that went to help purchase a
new BBQ for the shelter. The best part of my Mitzvah Project
was making 12 bulletin boards to hang in the bedrooms at the
shelter. These boards will brighten up the rooms and allow the
teens to display some personal items while they are staying at the
shelter. I am very excited about my Bat Mitzvah. I have worked
very hard to prepare for this big day and I am looking forward to
celebrating with all my family and friends!
ANDI-TEMPLE ISRAEL’S 9-12 GRADE
YOUTH GROUP
By Max Liu, VP ANDI
This month ANDI had lots to do. We went to fall kallah, the
first kallah of the year. ANDI was a huge presence in SOCAL
with around thirty members attending. While at fall kallah we
had the first asefah of the year, a large regional board meeting
were all of the people in SOCAL vote on legislation. ANDI also
held our very first open door event. Several people from first
Congregational Church came. Reverend John Forest Douglas,
the associate minister, plans to invite ANDI to some of their
events and continue connection with ANDI. Next month
ANDI plans to start the oneg games and crafts again and go to
NFTY SOCAL Social Justice Kallah. Finally if you have any
questions feel free to ask our advisor Kara Liu or one of the
ANDI board members.

RITUAL PRACTICES COMMITTEE MESSAGE
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
By Joanne Levy, Vice President, Ritual Practices
During the High Holy Days we listen,
we think, we pray. We consider how we
can make our lives more meaningful,
be better spouses, parents, children,
friends, congregants. As we move
forward into this new year, 5775,
bringing the messages and inspirations
into our busy lives, I am overwhelmed
with gratitude for those in our
congregational family who volunteered
to create a warm, welcoming and wellorganized experience at the Temple
and at Adventure in the Park. As the Vice President of Ritual
Practices, and on behalf of the Board of Directors, I offer my
heartfelt thanks.
First and foremost, I am reminded how incredibly lucky we are
to have our wonderful Rabbi Moskowitz, whose words continue
to move, inspire and enrich.
We are blessed to have Cantor Hass, who, along with David
York and the Ensemble, brought the beauty and joy of music to
complement our prayers.
Behind the scenes, but not forgotten, planning, organizing and
making everything come together and run smoothly, thank you
to Eric Shatzkin, Sharon Amster-Brown, Charmaine Weiner,
Michael Jackson, the office and entire building staff.
To the man with the excel spread sheet, to beat all spread sheets, I
love and appreciate the coordinating efforts of my hard-working
husband, Jerry Levy.
Thank you to our incredible volunteer corps, for their dedication
to creating a wonderful High Holy Day experience at the Temple

TI SISTERHOOD
TIS BOARD PROFILE:
Nancy Linden, Member-At-Large, Fundraising
By Joanne Levy, Newsletter & Publicity
Nancy was raised to believe that if
“your cup runneth over” you give
back what you can to others, be it to
our temple, JFCS, our Federation or
our schools. It is one of her greatest
pleasures, so it’s no wonder she said
“yes” when asked to share her talents
with Temple Israel Sisterhood Board!
Nancy is both a member of the
programming committee and the fund
raising committee and is very much
looking forward to working with all of
the members of Sisterhood.
Nancy was born in Detroit, Michigan, and lived there until she
was 30 when she moved to Long Beach California and met
husband-to-be, Jim Linden. They were married in Detroit in
1977 by our very own Rabbi Wolli Kaelter. Nancy and Jim have
two sons, Seth and Ari and an adorable two-year old grandson,
Ezra Benjamin. One of her happiest days was when Ezra was
named at our very own Temple Israel, surrounded by their family,
dear friends and Temple Israel family.

GREAT FOOD AND FRIENDSHIP
AT OUR WOMEN’S NIGHT OUT,
AT RUSSO’S RESTAURANT IN AUGUST
It is no surprise that Nancy pursued a profession and career
focused on caring, giving and teaching. She graduated from the
University of Michigan and Wayne State University where she
received her Masters degree in Special Education. She worked
in the field of early childhood/special education, until three years
ago, when she retired. Also, she has been a part-time professor
at Cal State Long Beach and at Long Beach City College in the
Special Education Departments.
Being involved in the various Jewish organizations within our
city also gives Nancy a sense of fulfillment. She helped plan the
very first Women’s Weekend in Long Beach, thirty-four years
ago, at Camp Komaroff, and was President of Women’s Division
of the Federation. Additionally, she brought the very first Visions
event to Long Beach in the late 1980’s.
Nancy also loves hanging with her girlfriends, husband, and
sister, playing mahj, walking, shopping, doing yoga and reading.
Her cup does, indeed, runneth over, and Sisterhood is fortunate
to be the recipient of Nancy’s talent, generosity and time. Thank
you, Nancy!

CARING COMMUNITY - A STORY
By Susan Philips, Bereavement Chair
Adapted from the re-telling by
Rabbi Edward Feinstein, “Heaven
and Hell,” Capturing the Moon,
pp. 47-48. Behrman House, 2008.
There once was a Jewish man
so pious and righteous, that an
angel came and visited him,
offering as a reward for his
good deeds a chance to glimpse the afterlife while he was still
alive. Like most of us, he was curious about what happens to us
after we depart this world, and he accepted the offer.
First the angel took him to hell. The man was shocked. He saw a
beautiful mansion with beautifully manicured grounds. The angel
led him inside the mansion through rooms filled with plush rugs,
hand-carved furnishings, lush tapestries and beautiful art; each
room more beautifully appointed than the last. Finally they came
to an immense banquet hall, laden with a feast the likes of which
the man had never dreamed. Delicacies of every sort were piled
high on rich golden platters: steaks and chicken and fish, all with
delectable sauces; pitchers of fine wines and sweet juices; tureens
of savory soups, and desserts beyond description. It was, without a
doubt, far greater than any feast on earth.
Then a servant rang a dinner bell. Into the banquet hall came
the inhabitants of hell. To the surprise of the man, they were
emaciated—sickly, starved and crying out in pain. How could this
be, given such a feast? How could they live in the presence of such
plenty, yet look so hungry and forlorn?
As everyone approached the table, the man noticed that the
inhabitants of hell could not bend their elbows! They could grasp
at the fabulous food, but they could not put it in their mouths.
And so they groaned and moaned in hunger and bitter frustration
as the magnificent feast lay before them. They could see it, they
could smell it, they could even touch it, but they could not eat it.
The man felt their anguish and begged to be taken away.
A moment later the angel whisked the man to heaven. To the
man’s astonishment, it was identical with hell. The same lush lawn,
the same great mansion, the same elegant halls, even the same
grand banquet room. As in hell, the table was laden with platters
of gourmet foods and pitchers of delectable wines and cool juices.
When a servant entered and rang the bell, the man braced for
another scene of frustration and torture. The inhabitants of heaven
entered and the man saw that the people of heaven suffered the
same malady as their counterparts in hell: they, too, could not
bend their elbows. But the inhabitants of heaven were different:
astonishingly they were healthy and joyful; they laughed and sang.
How, then, wondered the man, were they so happy and well-fed?
The man watched as the people in heaven picked up the delicious
food on the platters, and, with their arms stiff in front of them,
fed the person next to them. This was the only difference between
8
heaven and hell: in heaven, instead of grasping food for themselves,
the inhabitants turned and fed their neighbors.
Community in this story is not simply about being around the
same table. It’s about reaching out—literally, and helping our
neighbor. It’s about creating supportive relationships with the
other people at the table.
Temple Israel’s Caring Community is looking for people that will
reach out and help our neighbors in their hour of need. Currently
we are working on providing assistance to the newly bereaved.
We hope you are interested in helping us to build a Kehillat
Chesed – a Caring Community.

WOMEN’S BOOK CLUB
Wednesday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m.
The second book of the 2015-2016 year is Lady at the O.K.
Corral: The True Story of Josephine Marcus Earp by Ann
Kirschner. Rosecarrie Brooks has kindly agreed to be our
facilitator for the evening.
The New York born daughter
of
Polish-Jewish
immigrants,
Josephine
Sarah
Marcus, a
flamboyant actress and dancer, was
the common-law wife of Wyatt
Earp for nearly 50 years. She was
a valiant frontierswoman in her
own right. Interpreting the fabled
1881 shootout at the OK Corral as
a consequence of a love triangle, the
author ably brings Josephine’s story
out of the shadows of history. The
story ranges from San Francisco in
the Gay Nineties to rough mining
camps, gaudy gambling casinos, and Hollywood, and offers a
new look at this period of the Wild West.
(The New York Times Book Review, 4/27/14)
Bring a vegetarian item to
share for dinner and then
stay for the screening of
this excellent short film.
In 1979, the Islamic
Revolution in Iran brought
a 2500 year-old history to
a close for the Jews who
left their homeland for
America. Uncertain about
their safety and fearing
religious persecution in Khomeini’s Islamic Theocracy, an
estimated 80,000 of Iran’s 100,000 Jews fled the country. This
documentary tells the story of those Jews who re-established a
tight-knit community in Los Angeles.
Iranian Jewish families talk about their past in Iran - how the
increasingly hostile circumstances forced them to flee their own
country in order to secure a better future for their children. They
recall the difficulties of starting a new life in the United States.
They voice their fears about their children growing up in an
alien society, adopting a culture that is far removed from their
own. Young Iranian adults, on the other hand, talk about the
pressures of conforming to parental expectations, of remaining
true to their Iranian Jewish heritage even as they try and carve
their own individual identities in modern day American society.
Historical background via the use of archival footage gives a
detailed overview of the original Jewish settlement in Iran and
their relationship with their adopted country as well as how they
fared in the 20th century.
In the American cultural imagination, Iranians are represented
by scenes of hardline religious leaders and unruly crowds crying
“Down with America.” Very little is known about the religious
diversity of Iranians living in America. This documentary helps
create a more nuanced view of the culture and religious diversity
of Iranians both inside and outside the country.
There is no cost to attend.

INTERFAITH GREETINGS
Interfaith at Work in the Community
by Roni Love, member of the SCIC
First Drops is an interfaith organization
whose mission is to educate children on
the world’s religions through interactive
and fun activities by developing
understanding and fostering respect for
all people. Their founder and president,
Farrah Khan, is known for her interfaith,
social justice and political work. She is the
Executive Director of Newport MesaIrvine Interfaith Council, Board Member of Orange County
Interfaith Network, VP of One Global Family Foundation and
Ambassador of the Parliament of the World’s Religions. Besides
being honored by the U.S. Congress, CA Senate and State
Assembly, Khan became the recipient of the 2015 Community
Leader Award from the OC Human Relations Commission and
Women For Orange County.
First Drops visits local churches, temples, synagogues and
mosques which provide tours of their facilities, brief discussions
on their practices, and invite the children to participate in
activities and festivities. Each visit is followed by a question and
answer session.
As a major project of First Drops, the children feed homeless
community members every 4th Sunday of the month and also
send comfort notes to those outside the community, like to the
members of the Sikh community in Wisconsin after the horrible
shooting tragedy in 2012 and to our own Temple Israel, when our
newly renovated temple was vandalized. Joining hands, children
from diverse backgrounds are setting examples through service.
First Drops has received awards from: the South Coast Interfaith
Council; the Stanton, Westminster, Garden Grove Interfaith
Council; the CA State Senate and State Assembly; the U.S.
Congress; and the World Interfaith Harmony Film Festival,
placing 1st for their entry, “An Interfaith Carol.”
First Drops nurtures confidence and educates children about
those around them, providing experiences the whole family can
enjoy. A quarterly Human Book series where guest speakers will
walk the children through life’s ups and downs and share ways in
which they can overcome obstacles is forthcoming.
Farrah Khan invites Temple Israel and its children to join First
Drops and experience how beautiful life is when people of different
faiths and customs become friends. “I really believe that we need to
work hard for our kids so that they can come out of this cycle of
hate we’re living in today,” stated Khan. Let this be so…
