For a couple of hours, I drove a new Lincoln Mark V with black pearl coat paint towing another 31’. The Pontiac had more power and had a little better mileage but the Lincoln was quiet and smooth. Not likely by today’s standards. At the time I remember being impressed. “ 1978 78’ Pontiac Parisian 350 1978 31’ Airstream My first trip with a downsized car. A number of previously optional features are now standard, such as a Denali-specific chrome grille that makes the truck instantly recognizable. Additional chrome trim and body-colour bumpers further distinguish it. Sierra Denali also offers a unique combination of interior style and luxury, including an exclusive leatherwrapped and heated steering wheel featuring wood-grain accents, and 12-way power-adjustable front seats with standard nuance perforated leather-appointed that can be heated and cooled. A Bluetooth phone package is now standard on all models, and a hard-drive navigation radio with CD/DVD and USB port features is now available. Denali models feature a unique center console, enhanced interior bright work and detailed, highly finished embossed sill plates. The center console has wood grain trim and a lid that conceals the cup holders, creating a more finished and refined appearance. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard with an auto-dimming rearview mirror on 2500 Denali HD and 3500HD Denali models. Standard features on the new Denali 2500HD and 3500HD include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power-adjustable pedals, remote vehicle starter, two auxiliary 12-volt power outlets that are mounted on the instrument panel, and front recovery hooks. Denali crew cab models have an optional power-operated rear sliding window, and a power-operated sunroof, but this feature is not available on extended cab models The 3500 HD Denali with dual rear wheels has seventeen-inch forged polished aluminum wheels and these are available on the SLT models that have dual rear wheels. Eighteen-inch forged polished aluminum wheels are standard on 2500HD Denali models and 20-inch forged polished aluminum wheels are available on 2500HD Denali. New exterior colour choices include Sonoma Red Metallic and Heritage Blue Metallic, which replaces the Midnight Blue. Other choices are Onyx Black, Mocha Steel Metallic, Stealth Grey Metallic, Steel Grey Metallic, Summit White, Fire Red, and Quicksilver Metallic. Sierra Denali HD models are offered exclusively in the crew cab body style, in regular- and long-box configurations and in 2WD and 4WD. The Duramax diesel/Allison 1000 powertrain is available across the board. Sierra HD models are designed to be comfortable and convenient while on the job, with features that include 170-degree-opening rear access doors on extended cab models and numerous storage compartments that provide covered access for everything from work gloves to laptops. Choose Your Power A Vortec 6.0L gas V-8 engine with variable valve timing is matched with the Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission as the standard powertrain across the Sierra HD model range. This combination delivers excellent performance and efficiency, with an emphasis on low-rpm performance. This year, the Vortec 6.0L V8 SFI engine can be ordered powered by Compressed Natural Gas. For diesel performance, the 6.6L Duramax diesel glow plugs take no more than three seconds to warm up in temperatures as low as -29 C (-20 F) so that in cold weather it provides a starting time on par with gas engines. The engine uses a high pressure piezo-activated fuel system for greater efficiency and improved performance with reduced emissions, developing 397 horsepower at 3000 rpm and delivers 765 pounds-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm for greater ability to pull your trailer up hills. Volume 42 Number 1 | RV Lifestyle 11 RV TIPS The standard class 5 trailer hitch is designed for great towing ability. The combination of the 6.6L diesel and Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission powertrain is available on all 2500HD and 3500HD models The transmission features driver shift control with tap up/tap down shifting and a patented elevated idle mode cab warm-up feature. Also, the tow/haul mode reduces shift cycling for better control and improved cooling when towing or hauling heavy loads. The 6.6L diesel engine uses Selective Catalytic Reduction aftertreatment system with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) injection to provide the best overall diesel characteris- tics and performance. You can drive about 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) between DEF refills. Combustion and after-treatment have been optimized to provide about 1,125 km (700 miles) between diesel particulate filter regenerations – a 75-percent improvement over the previous system and signifi- RV TIPS The Denali’s rugged suspension provides a significant fifth wheel towing capability. cant contributor to improved fuel efficiency, as the regeneration process requires additional fuel. Fine-Tune your Ride All Sierra HD models feature fully boxed frame assemblies. Redesigned last year, the frames have reinforced cross sections and use more highstrength steel for greater durability, higher towing capacity and improved ride and handling. The front sections are hydroformed. Five different torsion bar rates support five different front gross axle weight ratings with short-long arm/ torsion bar front suspension featuring forged steel upper control arms and precision-machined cast iron lower control arms help stabilize the range of trim heights of various models under load, while enhancing appearance, handling, durability, tire wear and alignment. The trim height can be adjusted on each bar via a single bolt. The upper shock mount attachment design is positively connected to the frame with two fasteners, eliminating squeaks and clunks, while supporting higher load capability and increased durability. Asymmetrical leaf-spring design minimizes axle hop and enhances traction control efficiency, with twostage leaf-spring design on 2500HD models and three-stage design on 3500HD model. All models feature 3-inch-wide (76 mm) leaf springs. Four-wheel disc brakes with hydroboost are standard on all models, with four-wheel, four-channel ABS standard on all single-rear-wheel models and a three-channel system is standard on dual-rear-wheel models. Tow Your Toys The Heavy Duty Trailering package with integrated brake controller and Eaton automatic locking differential are now standard on all Sierra 3500HD models. With a crew cab/long box and 6.6L engine you can tow a fifth-wheel trailer of up to 10,432 kilograms (23,000 lbs), and you can tow a conventional travel trailer of up to 8,164 kilograms (18,000 lbs) with the box-tube designed frame-mounted hitch . Heated outside and power-adjustable vertical camperstyle mirrors with turn signal indicators are available on 2500HD Denali and standard on 3500HD Denali models. When you are stopped on a hill of five percent or greater, sensors automatically engage the hill start system to hold the brakes for 1.5 seconds, or until you press the gas pedal to give you time to switch from the brake pedal to the gas pedal without rolling back. The standard exhaust brake system allows you to control the speed of the truck and heavy trailer when navigating long downhill grades without the fear of the brakes overheating and fading. Trailer sway can unnerve any driver when towing a large trailer. Sensors detect any sway and intervene with braking and/or reduced engine power to bring the trailer under control and keep it on its intended path quickly. The Farmers Market beside CBS Studio. You never know, you could be eating lunch beside a Star! I n 1952, I was six years old living with my parents in Brampton, Ontario. While I don’t remember too much of what went on between my Mom and Dad, I remember them speaking one night and the following weekend we had a garage sale. Even my stuff was sold. A few weeks later, myself, along with suitcases and boxes, were loaded into our car and we were on our way to Los Angeles, California. This was my first road trip to the Golden State and I remember my Dad saying that we would be travelling Route 66. I recall staying in a motel and all the rooms were teepees. At my age, I thought this was the way the aboriginals lived and we might see some cowboys. I also remember getting off the road early, as my Dad said “we would have to travel through the desert at night and had to buy a water bag to carry on the outside of the car. That evening, when we went out to the car and started it up, there was a strange noise coming from the engine. The lady in the motel office told us not to open the hood and drive it over to the gas station. The gas station attendant came out with a long stick. He opened the hood and pulled out a rattle snake! Believe it or not, it was still alive – but not for very long. At that point my Mom was ready to go back to Canada. But we finally arrived in Los Angeles and my Mom’s sister lived there with her husband (Aunt Ruth and Uncle John) and we stayed with them for a while. Now, my Uncle John was an electrician and both my Aunt Ruth and Uncle John were musicians and played in the Studio Orchestra at 20th Century Fox. This is when I learned that my Dad was going to work with 20 Century Fox Studio’s Theater division. There is so much to see and do in Los Angeles. “…As a child living in Los Angeles….one time I remember John Wayne was sitting in the living room with several other people. I simply said hello and went out to play…” As a six year old, movie stars really didn’t interest me, unless it was Roy Rogers. On many weekends, my aunt and uncle would have guests over at their house and one time I remember John Wayne was visiting, sitting in the living room with several other people. I simply said hello and went out to play. My mother, who was raised in a big family, missed her family a lot and two years later, we moved back to Ontario. At that point, I knew that some day I Remember Norman Bates and the movie Psycho? would come back to Los Angeles. I didn’t know at that time I would make the trip several times in a motorhome, but I knew I would be back. When Karen and I formed up Wagon Trains RV Tours, we decided to run a caravan to California. One of the stops would be Los Angeles. From Ontario, there are several ways to get to Los Angeles. The easiest way, without very many high climbs in the Rocky Mountains, is to cross the border A young M.B. (front and center) with “The Duke” at the opening of the popular movie, Quiet Man in L.A. Volume 42 Number 1 | RV Lifestyle 17 Wagon MASTERS at Port Union, Michigan, and take I-69 to Indianapolis, Indiana. From here, travel west on I-70 to St. Louis, Missouri, then take I-44 to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. At Oklahoma City, travel I-40 west to I-15 in California and take the I-10 to Los Angeles. As an alternate route, take I-94 to I-80 at Chicago then continue west (which is the fastest route to San Francisco). Travel I-80 west to I-76 through Nebraska and travel south to Denver, Colorado. Then head west on I-70. Now, in Denver, there is a very steep climb going west on I-70 and not to far past the first climb you will come to another climb. Follow I-70 to I-15 and head south to Las Vegas, Nevada. From Las Vegas, go west on I-15 to I-10 into Los Angeles. Now for those on the west coast I-5 south from the Canadian Border takes you to California all the way to Mexico. For RVers who like adventure, take some back roads across the Rocky Mountains. Some of the climbs have hairpin turns and when coming down you will have to go into low gear (good brakes are neccesary). We have travelled some of these back roads and have had motorhomes in our caravans overheat and they had to pull over. There are two books to consider purchasing that can be found truck stops. The first one is Mountain Directory East and the other is Mountain Directory West. These books provide information you need when you travel the back roads through the mountains. When we travel the back roads in the Southwest, we found Monument Valley, Durango, Four Corners and so much more. But it is worth taking the back roads through the Rocky Mountains. When you plan your trip to Los Angeles make sure to have plenty of time to explore this city, there is so much to see and do. There’s Beverley Hills, the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Blvd. and Vine St., Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farms, Universal Studios and so much more! If you plan to see a TV Show, like the Tonight Show or The Price is Right, order tickets early and plan on getting to the TV station several hours ahead of the taping as they give out more tickets than they have seats for. We were at Universal Studios and they were handing out tickets to a brand new show called Match Game. We went early and got to see the pilot show and some very well know stars. The show was on for many years and is into reruns today. Keep in mind traffic into Los Angeles can be a nightmare and try to avoid rush hour. The entrance to the Santa Monica Pier. Also, purchase a map of Los Angeles and know the routes you are planning on travelling. Be sure to check with the campgrounds to determine the best way to get to the area you want to see. The best way to see Los Angeles is via a bus tour as the drivers know the area and are accustom to the traffic. I am sure campgrounds can arrange tours for you. Los Angeles is made up of many counties, so the map will be a big help. One last reminder, Los Angeles is known to have earthquakes and we have been there when they have had earth tremors. When I was six, I experienced an earthquake. I remember watching the buildings sway back and forth. Los Angeles is worth the drive but do your homework first. This can be a drive and adventure of a lifetime. Save the liquid in a 2-cup measuring cup. Set aside. In a bowl, combine the brown sugar and cornstarch. Add enough water to the pineapple juice in the measuring cup to make 2 cups of liquid. Stir the 2 cups of liquid into the brown sugar and cornstarch. Add the vinegar and ketchup. Mix well. Pour the mixture into a wok or deep frying pan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens and becomes dark red. Add the red pepper, onion, and pineapple tidbits. Cook and stir until the pepper and onion become tender, approximately 15 minutes. Add the shrimp to the wok. Stir in order to cover each shrimp with the hot liquid. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until the shrimp are red on the outside with a firm, white texture on the inside. Do not overcook the shrimp. Serve over rice with lots of sauce. Volume 42 Number 1 | RV Lifestyle 23 Letters Tips for towing and touring... by Garth W.
