Taylor, Publisher Visit our website at Run the Wave www.rvlifemag.com For Prostate Cancer Research RV Lifestyle Magazine, in conjunction with our sister publication Power Boating Canada, will present a series of “Run The Wave” special events in support of Prostate Cancer Canada’s efforts to find a cure for the disease that strikes one in seven men ages 45 and older… almost every family knows someone who is affected with prostate cancer. So let’s put a stop to it NOW, so that everyone can enjoy more years of RV travel. The “Run the Wave” program focuses on five boating 4 events in Easter Canada, and a virtual boating experience online at www.runthewave.com. Our goal is to raise funds for prostate cancer research through this series of family fun events and waterfront festivals at popular vacation venues. You can follow the progress of the Run the Wave teams and add your support to the fundraising effort at the website…better still, bring your friends and families to the events, enjoy the excitement of waterfront activities, and enter our contest to RV Lifestyle | Volume 41 Number 3 win a ride on one of the spectacular performance boats. Many of the “Run the Wave” events follow routes that bring the boats within sight of campgrounds - our 1000 Islands Poker Run, for example, passes campgrounds along the shores of the St. Lawrence from Kingston to Prescott, and tens of thousands of spectators enjoy the action from the shoreline. They want floorplans with outstanding livability — no matter what the coach length. Innovative features that enhance their comfort. And quality that holds up over the long haul. No wonder so many veteran RVers are turning to coaches like our Winnebago Tour® and Journey® or Itasca Ellipse® and Meridian®. Thanks to seven groundbreaking floorplans — including the exciting new 36M and bath--and-a-half 42E as well as the industry bestseller 42QD — our Class A diesels are outselling both Monaco and Fleetwood.* In fact, our Class A diesel market share has grown faster than any other major manufacturer’s, more than doubling (we’re up 117%) over the past four years.* So the key to your perfect diesel could very well be as close as your nearest Winnebago or Itasca dealer. Hello Paul: Thank you for bringing up the subject. On one trip, many years ago, we were towing a fifth wheel trailer in windy conditions. We had difficulty maintaining highway speeds and steering until we purchased a wind deflector. The wind deflector that I have used in the past is made by Wingmaster, and it is available from many Canadian RV dealers. Another good unit is the AeroShield, manufactured in Manitoba by IconDirect.com. Smaller deflectors do not seem to get the wind up and over the front of the fifth wheel. In Canada, the fuel is available through the RV Care Dealers Group. That means that it may not be available in the area where you are camped when you need it. At this time, the fuel is costly and the recommendation is that you should have up to four 10-litre containers on hand so that you do not run out of fuel. This amount would be capable of operating the fuel cell for the season, depending on how much electricity that you use. The cost of the fuel cell itself is in the $5000 range this would not be excessive for someone who owns a $150,000 motorhome, but it could be expensive for those who have a small travel trailer. So far, we have not seen a commercially available propane version of the fuel cell. In your case, you might be farther ahead to use a small portable 1000watt generator to top up your batteries during the daytime. Several dealers have had success by using a high volume fan to force air down into one of the roof vents. (This means removing the cover first.) Then they wet the entire roof and wall surface with a soapy solution. You will see bubbles showing where the leak occurs. It is possible to have more than one spot where the water is getting in. Water has a tendency to wick upwards so don’t forget to inspect the seals around the windows in the walls. Hybrids are designed to work in stop and go city traffic, not on the highway. The electric motors are programmed to operate from launch up to about 15 mph and then the gasoline engine kicks in. As a result of this driving pattern, on our test drives there was no appreciable savings in fuel using the hybrid to tow a trailer, and the tow rating was lower than the same vehicle without the hybrid motor. GM has built many street buses with the hybrid electric motors, but they regenerate the electricity every time the bus applies its brakes. Out on the highway, you very seldom apply the brakes, so the batteries would go dead very quickly. Some of the big chassis builders have experimented with highway tractor trail- For subscribers only… Your digital edition of this issue is now available on-line… Enjoy the convenience of 24/7access to expert RV Lifestyle Magazine content – no matter where you travel, from your laptop or office computer. The hydraulic energy builds up during travel and is released during starts to help acceleration. We can only look forward to the future when new style engines are put into production. Recently, I was shown a GM truck chassis modified with an all-electric drive system powered by batteries with the addition of a small gasoline engine to recharge the batteries. You can charge it up, or fuel it up! This truck has shown that it can drive all day using a small amount of fuel. RVs built in Canada or the United States, and intended for sale and for use in Canada are built to CSA Z240 and DOT (Department of Transportation) codes. RVs built in Canada and the United States for Only 40 minutes from Victoria, BC sale in the USA are built to NFPA 1192 codes. (National Fire Protection Association). Both of these product standards were developed to protect the safety of RV’ers. The standards address the areas of plumbing, electrical, propane systems and tanks, fire and life safety provisions, running gear, electric brake systems, cargo carrying capability, tongue load, safety chains, glazing materials, smoke and gas detectors, safety exits, fresh water and waste water handling systems, ventilation of exhaust gases from combustion of furnaces, water heaters and engines, and fuel dispensing systems. Since both countries have had different ideas of what was required to build the safest RV for the protection of RV’ers, this meant that manufacturers who wanted to build RVs for sale in either Canada or the United States often built to one or the other safety code standards. Negotiations between the two countries are being carried out by a group of representatives of Canadian and US manufacturers and suppliers to bring these standards closer together for both countries. I serve as the Chairman of this group. To find out exactly what would have to be done to import any motorhome from the USA, you should go to the Registrar of Imported Vehicles website www.riv.com continued on page 48 Vancouver Island’s Newest Fully serviced RV Resort s/CEANVIEWPULLTHROUGHSITES sAMPPOWERCABLE7I&I s.EARBYLAKESANDTRAILS s&ULLSERVICEMARINA s"OATRENTALSlSHINGGEAR sLANEBOATLAUNCHRAMP s+AYAKBICYCLERENTALS s#OFFEE(OUSE3NACK"AR 2 % 3 % 2 6!4 ) / . 3 s ) . & / 2 - !4 ) / . 1-877-478-1771 www.pedderbay.com Volume 41 Number 3 | RV Lifestyle 47 Letters continued from page 47 Getting a Charge +HOOR*DUWK :H GR TXLWH D ELW RI GU\ FDPSLQJ , KDYH LQVWDOOHG D VHFRQG EDWWHU\ RQ P\ WUDYHO WUDLOHU 1RUPDOO\ , MXVW FRQQHFW RQHEDWWHU\DQGDOWHUQDWHWKHP&DQP\ FRQYHUWHU KDQGOH FKDUJLQJ ERWK EDWWHU LHVDQGLIVRFDQ,FRQQHFWWKHEDWWHULHV WRJHWKHU" (G/DPRXUHX[ 2WWDZD21 Hello Ed: The converters used in most RVs are capable of charging up to two batteries that are connected in parallel. Remember that this will take twice the time to charge, compared to units with just one battery. Most converters are usually limited to about 2 to 5 amperes of charging current. If you try to charge more than two at once, you could burn out the charger section. The batteries can be charged faster if you use an auxiliary charger (like one with a 10 amp capability) or a small portable generator. Tranny Coolers Know for sure with the GiraffeG4! As far as your concept of towing the trailer with no fluids on board, This is not really necessary, and it may affect handling. Trailers are designed for good balance with the fresh water tanks full and the waste tanks empty. A trailer that is not well balanced can develop sway. With your dual cam sway control hitch, you should have no problems. For a convenience perspective, I always like to travel with fresh water that I can trust on board, as there is no guarantee that you will have access to water when you arrive at a campground. You could arrive on a busy day and find yourself in overflow camping. A transmission cooler is worth it’s weight in gold. When transmissions overheat, the seals and gaskets have a tendency to warp and melt and the life of the transmission becomes less in a very short time. By keeping the temperature down, your transmission will not have a problem. If you experience overheating problems, it is possible to change out the factory supplied cooler for one with more BTU cooling capability. On normal roads, there should be no difficulties driving in Overdrive, but I would definitely shift to a lower gear going up or down hills. Transmission heat is caused by excessive hunting between gears. By running your engine at a slightly higher rpm, you gain power and the higher speed of the radiator fan helps the cooling. After climbing a hill on your trip and stopping to see the view, do not shut off the engine, let it idle so that the heat in the engine block can be dissipated. Most radiators boil over after climbing a long hill if you shut off the engine without letting it cool down.
