Mary Haugan
Mary Jean Meis was born April 14, 1936, in Geddes, SD, to Alfred and
Elnoi-a (Anderson) Meis. She was the fifth of seven daughters and the selfproclaimed "Tom boy" of the family
growing up on their family farm outside
of Geddes.
After graduating from Platte High
School in 1954 Mary was employed at
Anderson's Cafe in Platte where she met
her future husband Maurice. They were
married December 26, 1957, in Sheldon,
IA and resided in Pierre for a few years
before settling down in Platte to begin a
family. The couple was blessed with three
children: Mike, Machelle and Mark.
Mary was employed by the Platte Hospital for many years. She also enriched her
community by being actively involved
in multiple organizations as a Meals On
Wheels volunteer, Boy Scout leader and
Sunday School teacher.
As herfarnily grew Mary was blessed with the addition of four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with them and
watching them grow. She made several baby outfits for her grandchildren,
supported them at a variety of events, and acted as a caregiver and mentor.
Throughout her years Mary was well known and greatly loved for her diverse hobbies and competitive nature. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing
cards, sewing, crocheting and completing puzzles. Perhaps what she is best
known for are herfarnous chocolate chip cookies. She would bake and deliver
them for any number of occasions and always received generous praise. She
was also an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and the New York Yankees.
Her competitive nature shone through whenever her tearns could be found
on TV. She
entertained
her family and
friends as she
watched
and
cheered for her
favorite players.

sary Maurice passed away on March 23, 1998. Mary then moved to Pierre
where she resided until June 2014. There she joined the tearn at Broken Arrow Farms, her sons' hunting preserve, and was instrumental in getting the
business up and going. She would cook, clean and complete any other duty
that may ar-ise. She took great pride in her work and would often go above
and beyond expectations. Her efforts were greatly appreciated by all who
visited Broken Arrow, and she made countless friends over the years.
When her health declined Mary returned home to Platte, SD, and moved
in to the Platte Care Center. Here she was able to enjoy frequent visits from
friends and family. She often commented on the friendliness of the staff and
considered many of them friends. In the early morning of December 13,
2014, the Lord called Mary home after a brief battle with cancer. .
Mary is survived by two sons: Mike and Mark (Kelli), both of Pierre,
SD; and daughter: Machelle Seeley (Kirby) of Gregory, SD; four grandchildren: Joni (Demetri) Sengos of Sioux Falls, SD; Danielle (Derreck)
Martin of Sioux Falls, SD; Derek (Kate) of Pierre, SD; and Finlee Haugan:
of Pierre, SD; two great-grandsons: Andre and Leo Sengos and one future
great-granddaughter of Sioux Falls, SD; sisters: Louise Olson, Alice Birn-'
baum, Sharon (Ken) Kuiper, all of Platte, SD; and Lucille (Vie) Anthony of
Colorado Springs, CO. Also surviving her are Sheila Haugan and Brenda
Haugan, both of Pierre, SD; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice; parents, Alfred and
Elnora; sisters, Elnora and Charlene; and many brothers-in-law and sistersin-law.
