Information for Guests The Island Resort of Hiddensee
Information for Guests The Island Resort of Hiddensee Hiddensee - an island for all seasons Veranstaltungen Dear guests, Hiddensee extends a warm welcome to those looking for simple, unspoiled beauty on the Baltic Sea coast. Fine sandy beaches, picturesque heathland, a steep cliff coast and 'Bodden' - shallow bodies of brackish water found only in this region - as well as peace and quiet, the sound of horses' hooves and much more: Over 100 years ago these same features attracted many artists to Hiddensee and led to its becoming a noted artists' colony. Hiddensee's character changes with the season, and each aspect is well worth a visit. This brochure provides a wealth of information for your holiday. We are looking forward to seeing you and will be glad to help in any way we can. Especially following strong westerly gales it's worth taking a walk along the beach, beachcombing for the odd piece. Then you will see the 'amber fishers' standing in the waves in their waders and wielding nets as they search for this sought-after material floating in the salt water. You can obtain more information about amber by visiting the Heimatmuseum in Kloster (Kirchweg 1) or the amber workshops in Vitte (Norderende 142) and in Kloster (Kirchweg). Angling is possible in the coastal waters. Angling permits (daily, weekly or monthly permits) can be obtained in the information centre in Vitte (in the Rathaus (Town Hall) and in the harbour centre in Kloster on presentation of a valid fishing licence. Sea fishing tours around Hiddensee can be booked. They start in Schaprode and you can also join the boat in Neuendorf. The stretches of beach near the villages are supervised (see 'Beaches'). Beach 4 Hiddensee - an island for all seasons shelters can be rented near the villages as well (see 'Beach shelters'). The regularly conducted water quality checks have never yielded any results to give cause for concern. Hiddensee has a tradition of allowing freedom of choice in respect of bathing and sunbathing and is very popular with all visitors, whether they choose to wear bathing clothes or bathe naked (see also 'Beaches'). Bathing shelters Neuendorf: Vitte: Kloster: Torsten Steinfurth, Pappelallee 5, Tel. 03 83 00 - 4 02 Ulrich Kallius, Süderende 57, Tel. 0175 - 5 56 29 72; Strandservice, Norderende 140, Tel. 0163 - 4 29 80 64; Plato, Süderende 94, Tel. 03 83 00 - 5 01 82 Malte Schluck, Postweg 1, Tel. 03 83 00 - 4 35 Beaches Almost the whole west coast of Hiddensee consists of freely accessible, largely natural beach. There are supervised sections in Vitte, Kloster and Neuendorf. Lifeguards are on duty there from mid-May to mid-September and these sections are cleaned daily by resort administration staff. Certain weather conditions can lead to accumulations of sea grass - please bear in mind that the island's capacities are not sufficient to guarantee that large quantities of sea grass can be removed immediately. Each visitor has his or her own wishes and ideas as to what makes the perfect holiday. On Hiddensee, we try to take account of this. Some of the bathing beaches are cleared of litter, but not necessarily of the interesting natural objects cast up by the sea, such as algae, shells, sea grass and so forth, which are characteristic of all that happens between sea and land. It's almost a duty for every visitor to spend some time walking along the beach, benefiting from the sea air and lots of wind and looking for amber, flints and fossils. See also 'Bathing'. Hiddensee - an island for all seasons 5 Bicycles for rent can be obtained in all the island villages. Boat trips A wide range of boat trips can be taken around Hiddensee, e.g. through the Bodden and birdwatching (cranes) with the Reederei Hiddensee, Tel. 03 83 00 - 2 10, sailing trips with nature observation, Tel. 03 83 00 - 6 80 41, a trip around the island on the cutter 'Albatros', Tel. 03 83 09 - 12 09. With a maximum depth of 5 metres they are fairly shallow. Usually, the separation from the open sea means that the salt water in the Bodden is 'diluted' by inflows of freshwater from the land. The waters between Rügen and Hiddensee are considered to belong to the Bodden zone. Bus The island bus route connects the villages on the island and is served from Monday to Friday. You can find up-to-date timetables at all stops and at www.seebadhiddensee.de. Camping and bivouacking are not allowed anywhere on the island. The nearest camping ground is in Schaprode on Rügen, Tel. 03 83 09 - 2 34. Car rental on Rügen You can rent a car for individually planned day trips on the island of Rügen: Europcar Bergen, Tel. 0 38 38 - 25 42 80. The rental cars are located at Schaprode. Cliffs The northern part of Hiddensee is characterised by approximately 4 km of cliffs rising to about 60 m at the highest point. Most of this part of the coast constitutes part of the National Park and is designated as an 'active cliff'. Natural fissures, falls, caves etc. resulting from dynamic coastal processes make for unpredictable conditions requiring special care - please remain alert! The beach below the cliffs is always full of fascinating stones, including 'Hühnergötter' (flints with holes in them), fossils and driftwood. The north-western part of the cliff section Hiddensee - an island for all seasons 7 is protected from erosive action by an approximately 440 m long, flat-topped stone wall. Two sets of steps lead down to the beach: One is at the western edge of the village of Kloster and the other is in the Dornbuschwald immediately next to the restaurant 'Zum Klausner'. There are also beautiful walks along the top of the cliffs offering superb views across the Baltic Sea. Concerts During the high season there is a comprehensive programme of concerts, recitals, lectures and courses. But in the months of the mid season before and after the main season events are also held in the fire station and parish hall in Neuendorf, in the island church, in the Gerhart-Hauptmann House in Kloster and in the HenniLehmann House in Vitte. You will find current events posted on notice boards, in the events calendar and at www.seebad-hiddensee.de. Dentist see 'Medical practices' Disabled persons' vehicles or electrically operated walking aids may be used on Hiddensee without a special permit. Also, people with walking difficulties can avail themselves of the horsedrawn coach services and the island bus. See also 'Care services'. Dogs Dogs must be kept on the lead in all the inhabited areas and in the woods. They need not be kept on the lead in the protection zone 2 of the National Park, in the landscape protection area and in the nature protection areas (all parts of the island outside built-up areas), but they may not be allowed to roam free. Other animals must not be disturbed or molested. If in doubt, please use the lead! There are marked stretches of beach in Kloster, Vitte and Neuendorf where dogs are not allowed at all. There are no special beaches where dogs are specifically allowed on Hiddensee. Dogs which come under the corresponding stipulations of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Dog Control Regulations must always be kept on the lead. There are green boxes located throughout the residential areas containing bags for the collection of dogs' faeces. An information leaflet for dog owners can be obtained from the island information office and at www.seebadhiddensee.de. Drugstore The shop named 'Kiek In' supplies organic food, cosmetics, household goods and much more. Vitte Harbour, Tel. 03 83 00 - 6 07 31 8 Hiddensee - an island for all seasons Dunes form a natural part of Hiddensee's west coast. They are particularly evident in the part of the island called 'Dünenheide' ('Dune Heath') and they protect Hiddensee from high water. In the interests of coastal protection, please do not walk on the dunes and do not leave bicycles there. Use only marked beach access routes. Events Hiddensee can offer a great range of different events and interesting ways to spend time, such as feature films in the tent cinema, puppet theatre performances, many different talks and guided tours on natural and cultural history or the characteristic island weather, organ concerts, piano evenings, theme weeks or harbour festivals. The Gerhart-Hauptmann House, the island church, the Seebühne ('Sea Stage'), the Henni-Lehmann House, Haus Seeblick, the National Park Ex-position and many more contribute to making the little island of Hiddensee a treasure trove of things to do. For transporting your luggage on the island, the owner of your accommodation will generally make sure that there is a hand trolley waiting at the harbour or you will met you personally. Grieben (island map page 29) is the most northerly and also the oldest of the island villages, situated in the head of the Hiddensee 'seahorse'. The earliest records go back to the year 1297, shortly after the Cistercian monks arrived on the island. The name of the island's smallest village is derived from the Slavic 'grib', which means something like mushroom. That is why the entrance to the village is marked with a sign showing the name and the head of a mushroom. Guided trips around the island can be booked on various themes throughout the year. They range from natural history to cultural history, architecture and infrastructure to literary walks retracing the steps of the writers. Discover the island on foot or by bicycle. The exact times are shown on notice boards, in the latest events calendar and at www.seebadhiddensee.de. Special offers can be booked for groups, including ferry trips and coach tours. Heilpratiker (natural health pratician) Corny Kronemann (practice in the holiday village of Heiderose): shiatsu, fasting, nutrition, classical massage Tel. 03 83 00 - 461 Hiddensee The island of Hiddensee is a mainly long and narrow stretch of land to the west of Rügen which extends for about 18 km from north to south and covers around 18 km². The narrowest part is less than 300 m wide. Viewed from above, the island resembles a seahorse. Hiddensee is an officially recognised seaside health resort in which private motor vehicles are not allowed. The island is characterised by two different landscape types: The main mass of the island consists of a 72.5 m high hill in the north which was formed in the ice age and now features cliffs, pinewoods and mixed woods, gorse, meadows and sallowthorn thickets. Stretching to the south is the long, flat tail of the 'seahorse' consisting of a post ice-age alluvial plain with salt marshes, heathland, dunes and long sandy beaches. Areas in the northern section (Neubessin) and the southern tip (Gellen) of the island form part of the core zone of the National Park. To prevent disturbance of the thousands of migratory birds which use them as resting places every spring and autumn, access to these areas is prohibited. From north to south, there are four villages on Hiddensee: Grieben, Kloster, Vitte and Neuendorf-Plogshagen. In the 12th century it was ruled by the Lords of Rügen, and in 1296 Witzlaw II of Rügen made a gift of the island to the Cistercian Order. The wealthy and influential monastery was dissolved during the Reformation of 1536. Today, nothing but some ruined walls and the name of the village of Kloster remain to remind us of its existence. The late Gothic church which was built by the monks outside the monastery grounds around 1332 still serves the islanders as their parish church. Major coastal protection measures have been taken to prevent flooding of the inhabited areas. Horse-drawn coaches provide a perfect way to discover the island. During the season, there are usually covered wagons waiting for the ferries (pre-booking is recommended). Horse-drawn transport facilities can be found in all the villages. You can prearrange trips or take 'pot luck'. There are central locations where the coaches are stationed in the harbour areas and in Kloster next to the island church and the museum. Island news service An island newspaper appears monthly and subscriptions can be taken out. Edited by Barbara Franck, Tel. 03 83 00 - 4 01 14 Hiddensee - an island for all seasons Kites For safety reasons, kites may not be flown in the area of the supervised bathing beaches. There is plenty of space to fly them on meadows and on other sections of beach, but please bear in mind that resting birds may be disturbed by kites and fly them with care and attention. At the beginning of August there is an annual kite festival in Grieben, including opportunities to build them. Kloster (island map page 28) As the home of the island museum ('Heimatmuseum'), the island's church and the Gerhart-Hauptmann House, Kloster forms the cultural heart of Hiddensee. The name is derived from the Cistercian monastery which existed from 1296 to 1536 on a site now in the middle of the village. Today nothing remains of the monastery beyond a few walls and the name of the village. Only after the Reformation did Kloster develop into a residential village, and from the beginning of the twentieth century it has gained a reputation as a well-loved seaside resort. Library The Library can be found in the 'Henni-Lehmann-Haus' in Vitte (Wiesenweg 2). The current opening times are posted on notice boards, in the events calendar and at www.seebad-hiddensee.de. Lighthouse The 'Leuchtfeuer Dornbusch' - the Dornbusch Lighthouse - is situated on the highest point of the island and has become its most well-known landmark. It has been an important safety factor for coastal shipping since 1888. The observation platform is open to visitors daily from 10:30h to 16:00h during the period from May to October. At other times of the year the lighthouse is only open on certain Hiddensee - an island for all seasons 15 days, which you can find out from notice boards, the events calendar and at www.seebad-hiddensee.de. Please note that for safety reasons children under 6 years of age are not allowed up the lighthouse. The platform is generally closed to visitors when the wind speed exceeds force 6. There is another signal light at the southern tip of the island (called the 'Gellen') which was built in 1907. It is located in the old lifeboat station, built in 1888, in the southwestern corner of Kloster next to the beach (Kirchweg 1, Tel. 038300 - 3 63). It is open from May to October every day from 10:00h until 16:00h. For further opening times, please refer to notice boards, the current events calendar and www.seebad-hiddensee.de. Fishery Museum Since 2007, the Fishery Museum has been in the process of development in the Lütt Partie shed in Neuendorf. Island fishers present their equipment and explain how it works, tell interesting tales of fishing history on the island and from their professional experience. Opening times: May to September from Tuesday to Thursday, 14:00h to 17:00h, Monday and Fryday, 11:30h to 14:00h. For further opening times, please refer to notice boards, the current events calendar and www.seebad-hiddensee.de. National Park Administration Hiddensee Vitte, Norderende 2, Tel. 03 83 00 - 6 80 41; eMail: [email protected] The northernmost building in Vitte, on the road to Kloster, houses the National Park Administration display which was inaugurated in 1998. The intriguing form of the building comes from its trapezium shaped ground plan and the slanting roof ridge. Nevertheless, with its hipped gable and reed thatched roof it remains a typical coastal house, seeming to hide behind the dune from the fury of the storms. The purpose of the exhibits on display is to give visitors a clear picture both of the aims of the National Park as such as well as the special characteristics of Hiddensee in this context. The exhibition motto is 'panta rhei' - 'everything is in a state of flux'. Immediately next to the building there is a nature experience path which appeals especially to children who like to make a game of discovering nature. There are regular lectures on different nature protection topics which can 18 Hiddensee - an island for all seasons also be held by arrangement. The National Park Exposition is open daily from 10:00h to 16:00h between April and October and from 10:00h to 15:00h between November and March. As well as guided nature walks, the National Park staff organise children's afternoons, trips in a typical local fishing boat ('Zeesboot') and evening events. For current information, please refer to notice boards and the current events calendar. National Park Island of Hiddensee Since 1990, Hiddensee has been a part of the 'Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft' National Park. We ask lovers of nature and walking to help Nature to develop according to its own natural rhythm in our National Park. The alluvial land developing at the Gellen and at Neu Bessin, both National Park core zones, constitute two of very few completely untouched areas in Germany. To prevent disturbance to endangered bird species while they are resting and breeding, access to these areas is not allowed. Please only observe the birds from a distance. Whenever they are disturbed, they have to expend extra energy, they are hindered in their search for food and in many cases this leads to the loss of the brood. Dogs must always be kept on the lead. Only use bicycles on authorised paths. On our small island, walking is much more relaxing and one gets to see much more. Open fires are not allowed on beaches (except at the permitted barbecue sites), in the woods and on the heathland. Neuendorf (island map page 28) The older part of Neuendorf called Plogshagen has retained the old character of a fishing village, with whitewashed houses standing in rows on ancient beach ridges. No fences separate the plots. The houses are built so that the living areas face south, towards the sun. Records show that the villagers of Neuendorf, who Hiddensee - an island for all seasons 19 also have the nickname 'Süder' ('Southerners'), were never subject to the feudal system - perhaps because of the late date at which the village was founded. Neuendorf, the 'new village', was established only shortly before 1700. In contrast, Plogshagen was founded during the time of the Cistercian monastery. Palucca-Week In 2009, the Palucca Week has been planned for 6th July to 10th July. During this time, visitors can see exhibitions of dancing by students of the Palucca School in Dresden, performed at various venues throughout the island. This commemorates the great bond which existed between Gret Palucca and the island, on which she owned a summer house. The exact times and information about other Palucca events can be found on notice boards, in the current events calendar, at www. palucca.eu and at www.seebad-hiddensee.de. Sallowthorn Weeks Sallowthorn is certainly the island's best known plant. The shrubs can be found all over the island, sometimes forming close thickets. In the autumn, the orange coloured berries appear to glow on the branches, and the much loved 'milking time' for sallowthorn can begin. The extremely vitamin C rich berries (also known as 'northern lemons') can be made into jam, juice, liquor, wine etc., but also used in cosmetics. The Sallowthorn Weeks for 2009 are scheduled to start on 16th September. From then on the subject of sallowthorn provides a rich source of interest over several weeks. 22 Hiddensee - an island for all seasons Sauna Hotelanlage Heiderose, Vitte, In den Dünen 127, infomation and telephone booking: 03 83 00 - 6 30 Süderhof, Vitte , Süderende 169, infomation and telephone booking: 03 83 00 - 6 66 90 Zum Klausner, Kloster, Im Dornbuschwald 1, infomation and telephone booking: 03 83 00 - 66 10 Hotel Godewind, Vitte, Süderende 53, infomation and telephone booking: 03 83 00 - 66 00 Sanddorneck, Vitte, Schulweg 1, infomation and telephone booking: 0160 - 8 05 60 03 Shopping Hiddensee has a surprising number of shops supplying foodstuffs, books, jewellery, souvenirs and so on. You will find the opening times in the events calendar and at www.seebad-hiddensee.de. Snakes There are three types of snake on Hiddensee: the grass snake, the smooth snake and the adder. (The harmless, snake-like slowworm belongs to the lizard family.) Only the adder, which is to be found mainly on heathland and dunes, represents any kind of threat to humans. Bites generally occur on account of lack of attention or carelessness, so we urge you to observe some simple rules of thumb while on Hiddensee. Stay alert when walking on heathland, and if you use narrow paths wear sturdy shoes and long trousers. Do not provoke or touch adders. If you are bitten despite these precautions, keep calm and call for help immediately (emergency services: Tel. 112). Tickets for ferries to Hiddensee can be purchased before the journey in the respective ferry port. Each visitor, including day visitors, pays for a day visitors’ tax card with the ticket. For visitors who stay overnight this is automatically deducted from the total sum of the visitors' tax. Visitors´ tax The island of Hiddensee is a recognised seaside health resort. The criteria for this include fulfilling the conditions of the relevant regulations in respect of the locality’s natural beneficial effects, bathing water quality according to EU standards, proper administration of bathing beaches, paths etc. Following a three year accreditation procedure, Hiddensee became the first seaside health resort in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to obtain renewed recognition (following the fall of the Iron Curtain) in 1995. Apart from the ‘technical’ aspects, a health resort must be prepared and able to fulfil the ordinary wishes of the visitors. When you pay the visitors’ tax, this entitles you to the following benefits: • free use of the beaches • regular monitoring of the bathing water quality • lifeguard service in the marked stretches of the bathing beaches in Vitte, Kloster and Neuendorf • daily cleaning up of the supervised bathing beaches • free use of public toilets • emptying of refuse bins and disposal of the rubbish • free tourist information service • free monthly events calendar • free use of the visitors’ library • free or subsidised events such as lectures, recitals, guided trips, cultural events • free opportunities for children and young people to spend their time 24 Hiddensee - an island for all seasons • maintenance of the resort-specific facilities and buildings on Hiddensee • maintenance of the public paths and benches • reduced entrance fees for the island museum, lighthouse and fishing museum. Many people are involved in keeping the areas accessible to the public in good order and maintaining or improving all that the island has to offer, and there is never a shortage of items needing repair or renovation. Finally, the island administration itself has obligations to meet in respect of taxes, fees and insurance premiums. Therefore in accordance with the local authority statutes for the health resort of Hiddensee a visitors’ tax is levied from the first day onwards. The visitors’ tax is levied independently of the actual usage of the benefits listed above. The rates are as follows: during the period 01.04. - 31.10. 1.50 EUR per person and day during the period 01.11. - 31.03. 1.00 EUR per person and day. Alternatively, annual tickets covering the current calendar year can be purchased for 42.00 EUR per person. No visitors’ tax is levied for children and young people up to the age of 18 (inclusive). All visitors, including day visitors, automatically pay the first day’s tax on purchasing a ferry ticket. The tax due for the remaining days of a stay which is longer than a day trip is then to be paid to the owner/administrator of the visitor’s accommodation. The day of arrival and the day of departure count together as one day, and the first day’s tax which has already been paid is taken into account. On application, reductions are available for charitable organisations, schools and youth organisations. You can find a copy of the visitors’ tax statutes at your place of accommodation, at the resort Town Hall or at www.seebad-hiddensee.de. Hiddensee - an island for all seasons 25 Vitte (island map page 29) is the 'capital' of Hiddensee, so to speak, as it is the location of the largest harbour, the school, the island medical practice, the police station, the National Park House, the library, the tourist information office, the bank, a depot for medicines and a variety of larger and smaller retail outlets. The name goes back to the 'Fitten', small buildings established along the western section of the Baltic Sea coast where fish catches were collected, processed and traded. One such trading post gave rise to the present day village of Vitte. Waste disposal on Hiddensee On a small island like Hiddensee it is particularly important to ensure that waste is disposed of adequately. Here you will find a number of tips as to how you can contribute to keeping Hiddensee free of unsightly rubbish: Clean paper is collected separately in blue dustbins – there will be one at your accommodation. Newspapers, paper bags, frozen food cartons – please put all such items into the blue bin, NOT into the green litter bins placed all over the island and not into the general waste bin. The blue bins are emptied every four weeks. Glass is one of the most valuable raw materials in secondary processing systems. On no account should glass, especially broken glass, be left on the beach – just imagine stepping on somebody else’s broken glass with your bare feet! Please also keep glass out of the green litter bins – there are glass containers located in all the harbours as well as at the Grieben bus stop and at the western end of the holiday village in Dünenheide. Packaging marked with the ‘green dot’ (grüner Punkt) can be disposed of easily and free of charge – just put it in one of the yellow plastic sacks provided. This includes packaging film, drink cartons and plastic containers. If you do not find specially designated containers for separating rubbish in your accommodation, simply ask the owner/administrator for a yellow sack. The sacks are collected fortnightly. Batteries can be returned to the place where they were purchased – all retail outlets on the island have containers for collecting used batteries. Hiddensee maintains a system of green dustbins (‘Biotonnen’) for organic waste which should be available for all accommodation, unless the owner has his/her own compost heap. The green dustbins are collected fortnightly. This leaves only a small amount of general waste remaining, such as sanitary articles. These items should be put into the general waste dustbin, which is also collected fortnightly. Over 140 public litter bins on the island are there to receive minor items of rubbish which you have to dispose of on the beach or during a walk. Please remember: They are neither rubbish dumps nor bottle banks. 26 Hiddensee - an island for all seasons Around restaurants and retail outlets, the respective operator is responsible for the waste management. There is a container for second-hand clothes on the premises of the Hiddenseer Logistik GmbH, Vitte, Achtern Diek 35 Weddings on Hiddensee Information on the celebration of civil marriages on Hiddensee can be obtained from the administrative offices of Amt West-Rügen, Tel. 03 83 06 - 1 59 28.
