Evaluation of career potential
Throughout the competition the jury will evaluate a candidate’s potential
to become a professional dancer by considering:

A clear grasp in communicating differing movement dynamics
Technical facility, control, and coordination
While advanced technical skills will be taken into account, jurors’ primary focus will be on
the candidate's potential to succeed as a professional ballet dancer.
Each jury member will give one mark between 1 and 9 (9 being the best) for each of the

Louise Deleur, Goyo Montero and Richard Wherlock
Candidates can choose among the
internationally-renowned choreographers:
works
of
the

Louise Deleur
Australian born Louise Deleur trained at the Australian Ballet School
and chose to dance with West Australian Ballet and Sydney Dance
Company. She later became a freelance dancer and choreographer
working on independent projects that included film, television,
theatre and opera. She has worked extensively as a coach in
classical and contemporary techniques including two years at
Taipei National University of the Arts.
Now based in Queensland, Louise has created several works for
Queensland Ballet Company as well as other companies and
independent projects throughout Australia along with three full
length works for her own company Lucid Dance Theatre.

Goyo Montero (Prix de Lausanne prize winner in 1994)
Born in Madrid, Goyo Montero was trained by
Carmen Roche and completed his studies at the
School of the Ballet Nacional of Cuba. He was soloist
at the Oper Leipzig, Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the
Royal Ballet of Flanders and Principal at the Deutsche
Oper Berlin. As a choreographer he has created
pieces for many prestigious companies worldwide
and received numerous Ballet awards, amongst
them, in 2012, the Premio Nacional de Danza. Since
2008 Goyo Montero has been the Director of Ballet
and Principal Choreographer of the Staatstheater
Nürnberg Ballett.

Richard Wherlock
Richard Wherlock has been Director and head Choreographer of
Ballett Basel since the 2001/2002 season, and Artistic Director
of the renowned festival «basel tanzt» since 2004. Richard
Wherlock was born in Bristol (GB). After studying at London’s
prestigious Ballet Rambert School, he joined their company as a
dancer. He was Ballet Director at Hagen Theatre in Germany
from 1991 to 1996, then spent three seasons as director of the
Lucerne Ballet before moving to Komische Oper Berlin as
Artistic Director and Choreographer of BerlinBallett. He worked
as Choreographer for many renowned companies and also
created a full-length ballet for Les Étoiles de l’Opéra National de
Paris.
In 2000, he received the Prix Italia for the award-winning dance
film «Passengers» produced by the Swiss broadcasting company DRS, RM Associates and
3SAT. His most recent film success «One bullet left» – also produced by Swiss
broadcasting company DRS – was awarded the Golden Rose of Montreux in 2003.

During the week of the competition, the coaching of the contemporary
variations will take place under the supervision of Louise Deleur and
Goyo Montero for their own choreographies and Cynthia Labaronne
for Richard Wherlock’s variations.

“Prix de Lausanne Scholarships and Apprenticeships”
Winning a Prix de Lausanne scholarship enables a prize winner to gain free access
to the finest dance schools or to be accepted without an audition for an
apprenticeship with the most renowned ballet companies. It thus opens the door to
a year of top-level training and represents a fast track to the start of an international
career.
The jury of the Prix de Lausanne awards the following prizes:
•
Scholarships consisting in one year’s free tuition at one of the schools
mentioned on pages 16-18, and the sum of CHF 16,000.-, intended to cover
living expenses during the prize winner’s study year;
•
Apprenticeships reserved for finalists over 17 years of age, consisting in a oneyear apprenticeship spent with one of the companies mentioned on pages 16-18
and the sum of CHF 16,000.-, intended to cover living expenses during the prize
winner’s training year.

This prize is awarded to the finalist who, through the interpretation of his/her contemporary
variation at the finals, shows exceptional potential in the area of contemporary dance. The

Finalists who have not been awarded any other prize will receive the sum of 1,000.- CHF.

"Prize for the Best Swiss Candidate”
Awarded to the best Swiss finalist or resident that has been training in Switzerland for at
least three years before the competition

LEENAARDS FOUNDATION
Audience favourite
This prize reflects an “instant preference” that the audience has felt for one of the finalists
on the evening itself. Contrary to the prizes awarded by the jury based on an evaluation
system spanning several days (see page 18: Evaluation of career potential), the “Audience
Favourite” reflects the emotions of the moment. This prize rewards the finalist having
earned the most votes for his/her performance.

FOLLOW UP OF THE PRIZE WINNERS
The Prix de Lausanne is committed to its prize winners not only by giving them
scholarships, but by keeping in close contact with them during their year of training in order
to facilitate their choice of institution, help them with administrative questions and to be
sure that they adapt to their new school or company.
NETWORKING FORUM
The Prix de Lausanne organises a Networking Forum where young dancers who do not win
a scholarship during the competition can meet Prix de Lausanne Partner Schools and
Company directors interested in recruiting new talent. The Prix de Lausanne also arranges
a thorough follow-up of these candidates. In 2014, among the 46 candidates who received
an offer, 19 took the opportunity to continue their training in a new school or a new country.

One of the signature features of the Prix is that it is also a week of
classes and coaching for the candidates. They participate in daily ballet
and contemporary classes given by world renowned teachers. The

The Daily Dance Dialogues
An intimate discussion and question and answer session with some of the most prominent
figures in the world of dance.
Both Daily Dance Dialogues are moderated by Jason Beechey, Director of the Palucca
Hochschule für Tanz Dresden.

Cynthia HARVEY, president of the jury
Cynthia Harvey’s style marked her as one of ballet’s most versatile and valued artists. She
danced virtually every ballerina role with American Ballet Theatre and also had the
distinction of being invited by Sir Anthony Dowell to be a principal of the Royal Ballet.
Harvey performed as guest artist with Baryshnikov and Company, Nureyev and Friends and
numerous companies before retiring in 1995.
Ethan Stiefel, Prix de Lausanne prize winner in 1989
Ethan Stiefel is an internationally recognized Dancer, Instructor, Coach, Director and
Choreographer.
Stiefel served as the Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Dean of the
School of Dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA).
At age 16, Stiefel joined the New York City Ballet where he quickly rose to the rank of
Principal Dancer. He was also a Principal Dancer with the Zürich Ballet and American Ballet
Theatre. He made numerous appearances as a guest artist, including the Royal Ballet and
the Mariinsky Ballet. Stiefel gave his final performance with ABT in July 2012.

Chi CAO, Prix de Lausanne prize winner in 1994
Chi Cao studied dance at the Beijing Dance Academy and the Royal Ballet School. He was
a Prix de Lausanne prize winner in 1994 and joined the Birmingham Royal Ballet the
following year. In 1998, Chi Cao won the Gold Medal of the Varna international ballet
competition and soon after was named principal dancer at the Birmingham Royal Ballet in
2002. He was the star of the internationally acclaimed film Mao’s Last Dancer, which won
him a best actor’s nomination at the Australian inside Film award 2011. As well as dancing
with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Chi has danced all over the world with companies and
festivals, and when his schedule permits, Chi still does some film works in China.
Lisa-Maree CULLUM, Prix de Lausanne prize winner in 1988
Lisa-Maree Cullum was born in New Zealand. She studied in New Zealand, Sydney and
Monte Carlo. She started her career with the English National Ballet under the direction of
Peter Schaufuss. In 1990 she joined the Ballet of Deutsche Oper Berlin. She had eight
successful years with them until she in 1998 moved to Munich and the Bavarian State
Ballet. She has guest danced in St. Petersburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Rome, Milan and
New Zealand.

During the jury deliberations, the audience is treated to a short performance
by former prize winners or dancers from our partner institutions.
This year, the Prix de Lausanne is honoured to welcome two prize winners, Karen Azatyan,
Soloist of the Hamburg Ballet-John Neumeier, and Arsen Mehrabyan, Principal of the Royal
Swedish Ballet, along with Vahe Martirosyan, First Soloist of the the Royal Swedish Ballet.
We also have the pleasure to present a choreography performed by six dancers from the
Queensland Ballet Jette Parker Young Artist Program.

“Forceful Feelings”, a professional Armenian ballet troupe, was founded in 2006 by a group of
young principal male dancers working in renowned ballet companies. In addition to sharing their
great experience with the Armenian community, as well as ballet students, artists and teachers;
they aspire to give something back to their nation. The project’s main goal is creating a better
future for the next generation. Today, many young talented Armenian dancers follow them and
even younger ones are inspired to work towards a brighter future.

The Queensland Ballet Jette Parker Young Artist Program presents a new twenty minutes ballet
choreographed especially for the 2015 Prix de Lausanne.
The Jette Parker Young Artist Program is an apprenticeship program which fosters the talents of
gifted young dancers at the start of their professional careers.

The Prix de Lausanne receives financial support from the City of Lausanne, the Loterie
Romande and the Canton of Vaud, representing more than one third of its annual budget.
The remainder is funded by sponsors, patrons and donors.
While the annual budget for the 2015 competition amounts to CHF 1’203’000.-, an estimate
of various contributions and services in kind provided by sponsors and patrons shows a
global budget of over two million Swiss Francs. Among these services in kind, which
constitute an essential contribution, one should mention by way of example the free tuition
given by the schools providing scholarships and the invaluable assistance of many people
working on a voluntary basis.
Please note that funds must be raised each year to cover the budget of the competition.

As the Harlequin Floors team prepares for the 43rd Prix de Lausanne, which is taking place
from 1st to 8th February 2015, the company is delighted to continue its long standing
association through a package of sponsorship.
Sponsorship includes a Harlequin Liberty sprung dance floor and a scholarship award, as in
2013 and 2014. New for 2015 is live video streaming from the event via Prix de Lausanne
social networks and YouTube channel. This is replacing the video blog of previous years,
sponsored by Harlequin Floors.

The Prix de Lausanne is an international competition for young dancers, open to young
dancers of all nationalities aged 15 to 18 who are not yet professionals.
