Emily Schwartz
(William & Mary
‘12) moved up to TIC-VA Site Director in
her 4th season. She led with energy and cool
competence and always had time for chats with
campers. Joe Anderson ( JMU ‘12) moved
from Athletic Director to Assistant Director
in his 5th TIC summer, showing the CITs and
Joe with Executive Director Emily
Staff Assistants how it’s done and making camp
Riedel
operations as smooth as butter. Spencer Smith (Queens U, Canada,
‘13) became Technology Director in his 3rd season, setting high standards
for the Programming and Multimedia staffs, and inspiring them to achieving
them. Managing the on- and off-campus athletic program this summer, we
had two superb directors, Brad DuBose (George Mason U ‘12), back for a 5th
summer, and Leslie Keller ( JMU ‘12) in her 2nd turn at TIC. Brad directed the
Senior program, guiding the focus groups with spirit, and Leslie
brought her huge sense
of fun to the Juniors.
Theme days were
spectacular this summer!

Kristen Dasch ( JMU ‘12),
back for a 2 turn as our excellent Camp Nurse, showed her antic side on
“Halloween in August” day. She was also Office Manager, filing, answering
phones, distributing T-shirts and keeping camp running smoothly. Bill
Osborne and Rene Alzona, our veteran bus drivers were crucial to
the sports program, driving campers to both the Langley Field and
the Cooper gym. Michelle Tran (Shenandoah Conservatory ’15) and
Laura Hale (St. John Fisher College ‘09) were back for a 2nd season to
keep our Extended Day campers safe and happy, whether serving a nutritious
snack, playing board games, or using sidewalk chalk with the campers.
nd
experience counts
Clockwise
from right:
Ross Kerr (McDaniel ‘07) returned for a 5th year in Digital Music —
after a gap of two years in which he has been teaching special ed kids
and doing graduate work. His many years at TIC and in education paid
off with his campers, as did his excitement about their projects and his
delightful sense of humor. Graham Overby
(Savannah College of Art & Design ‘13) was
back for a 3rd summer. With his cool and
witty demeanor, he was a role model for
campers and staff alike — showing them how
to solve problems cooperatively. He taught
Java and functioned as the LOGO guru as
well as Room Captain. Matt Craddock (U
Toronto ‘15) not only taught LOGO, Python and Java,
but also C++ to some eager campers in his 3rd TIC
season. He is completely wacky (even with his shoes
on) and specializes in making dull things fun. Chrisser Alvarez (Brigham Young U
‘13) was back for a 2nd summer after a couple of year’s hiatus, teaching Animation
as our 3D guru — his knowledge of Maya is awesome. Also back for her 2nd
turn is Gabi Antali (Moholy-Nagy Institute, Hungary, ‘13). She is the expert in
Flash for 2D and Monkey Jam for stop motion animations, and she constantly
demonstrates her passion for art. Her campers love her ever present smile and
words of encouragement. Flexibility and creativity are the watchwords of Marcia
Kosin (U Michigan ‘11) who managed to keep chaos under control in the Film
room in her 2nd TIC summer. She modeled courtesy and respect along with her
deep love of movie-making.
Clockwise from top left:
2nd year veterans
Daniel Shapiro (U Mary Washington
‘13) not only led Drama with great
style and support of his talented
thespians, but participated in all athletics
with gusto. He was a role model for
collaboration and calm authority.
Michael Van Ness (U Pittsburgh
‘13), also known as MVN, was back with his contagious energy and
enthusiasm, always a magnet for campers. He made every activity —
even lining up — a huge amount of fun, and he offered the campers
genuine respect. Kelsey Green (U N Carolina ‘12) treated every camper
as extra
special and drew them to her because of her ability to
really
listen and care about their concerns. She cheerfully
participated in every sport, alternating between
leading and supporting. With natural athleticism
and a laid-back attitude, Taylor Armstrong
(Howard U ‘14) was a favorite with the campers.
He minimized tension with humor
and personalized the instruction,
especially in basketball,
leading by example. Susie
Kumah (Royal Holloway U,
London, ‘13) was usually
surrounded by a pack
of happy campers,
treating each one as
a unique person. Both
her athletic skills and ability
to lead Drama were excellent, and
she had a winning and omnipresent smile.
One of TIC’s most knowledgeable and proficient Programming counselors, Tom
Shapiro (VCU ‘14) was the go-to person for new and old staff alike. He led by example,
provoked intellectual curiosity and interest in the learning process itself as well as the final
project. His campers did produce some truly awesome projects
in LOGO and Java. A superb role model of athleticism for our
girl campers, Alika Johnston (UVA ‘15) also got to know her
campers well and supported
them while expecting the
best. She taught by example,
and often changed things up,
demonstrating great flexibility
and an ability to improvise.
Her unflagging energy was
exemplary.
super
new
staff
clockwise from left:
Ari Dinsmoor (Goucher College ‘11) was good at
adapting his teaching style to the needs of different
campers, and he really wanted them all to learn fundamental concepts in Programming. Mathew
Johnson (Stafford U, UK, ‘12) came ”over the pond” to Web
Design, bringing an upbeat positive attitude. He constantly
bragged about his
campers, who did
great projects, and
all enjoyed his funloving, high energy
personality. Marcelo
Rejas (GMU ‘13) found
common bonds with his
campers, from the youngest juniors to the oldest seniors. His
relaxed attitude and good knowledge of all the sports made the
campers gravitate to him. We were lucky to have Alexandra
Creech ( JMU ‘13) as our very capable Tennis Specialist this summer, and her collaborative skills meant
she worked well with other staff in all sports. Her dazzling
smile and welcoming attitude helped all the campers have fun.
Although an expert in digital music, which
he didn’t get to teach, Mitch Curl (Salisbury
U ‘13) worked hard to teach Programming
to novice campers, brilliantly modeling
collaborative learning and problem solving.
His enthusiam for his campers projects
was boundless. Campers swarmed around
Lindsay Robertson (GMU ‘13) for lively
conversations and her honest and caring personality. She was able to alter games
on the fly to make them more enjoyable, and when she taught drama, she greatly
encouraged improvisation. Embodying the
“Actively Caring for People” philosophy
he believes in, Kyle Pacque (Va Tech ‘13)
brought out the best in his campers and
modeled patience and kindness for all. He
was great at coaching individual
sports skills as well. Sean Wrobel
(Renssalaer Poly ‘14) demonstrated
intellectual curiousity and stimulated
great inventiveness in his campers.
His great sense of humor eased any
tensions, and he smoothed out the
chaos in the Robotics room with ease.
new style &
substance
clockwise from top right:
Mark Zvijac (VCU ‘14) and Will Engebretson
(VCU ‘15) were excellent collaboraters in
Film, although Mark also taught Animation, in
which he demonstrated his flair for Flash and
Monkey Jam. Will showed his growing mastery
of teaching as well as his expertise in Final Cut
Pro, and kept the chaos in the Film room to a minimum with his
strong organizational skills. Claudia Dimick ( JMU ‘15), known
for really listening to her campers and giving them constant
encouragement., had campers who would seek her out to learn
real athletic skills. She also modeled kindness and consideration
for others. Kat Ngov (UVA ‘15) taught both LOGO and Java
this summer, and nurtured intellectual curiosity among her
campers. Her patience and attentiveness were exemplary.
Christine Tran (Mary Washington ‘10) taught well,
particularly in her volleyball focus. Her love of
sport shines though, and she was great leading big games
or giving one-on-one coaching tips. Lucia Melgarejo
(Stanford ‘15) challenged her campers in both LOGO and
Java while keeping it fun, and was thrilled to encourage
girls especially to learn Programming. Known for his
ability to get everyone involved in learning, Malick
Diarra (U Maryland ‘15) taught both Programming and
Robotics in his first summer at TIC. His antic nature and
constant smile made it all fun. All the campers loved Liv
Kirk ( JMU ‘15) for her goofiness and energy. She could
improvise games on the fly or be the rock that others
depended on in traditional sports. A fine athlete, Sam
Paris (Howard U ‘14) had a laid back attitude and excellent
coaching skills that made him very popular with campers.
Diana D’Arcee (School of Visual Arts ‘15) showed a passion
for art and unmatched Photoshop skills. She engaged
all her campers in projects that were personally
satisfying to them, and she was enthusiastic about
their progress.
more great new staff
Clockwise from top left:
Peter Thomas (Va Tech ‘15) was always into the game no matter the sport,
and kept everyone moving and enjoying themselves. His upbeat attitude
worked magic with the campers, and his tennis skills were invaluable. Anna
Hicks (U Miami ‘16) brought advanced Photoshop skills to Digital Arts
and got her campers focused on their
projects. She introduced them to many
tools that got them really interested
while increasing their skills. As a former
camper, Brad Hodge (Carnegie
Mellon U ‘16) knew the ins and outs of
LOGO and how to make it fun for his
campers. He encouraged his campers
to do the most far-out projects and to
seek to learn more. Sebastian Lerner
(TJHSS&T ‘13) brought high level Java
knowledge to his Programming campers,
and mastered the teaching of LOGO
as well, focusing on the campers’ interests to help them create great projects. With
his expertise in programming robots, Max Knutsen (McLean HS ‘13)
was a great addition to our
Robotics room, and he urged
them to build advanced projects
using Bluetooth and variables.
Daniela Sainz (William and
Mary ‘15) brought a strong
background in theatre to Drama
and participated in all TIC sports
as well. She loved explaining
the rules for Hunger Games, and
enhanced everyone’s enjoyment.

Clockwise from top right:
With some staff leaving early, we were lucky to
be able to bring in some experienced counselors
from past years and other sites.
Chuck Henry (Barton College ‘05), a great
athletic counselor at the DC site two summers ago,
came in for Sessions 3 & 4, adding his brand of
high spirits and sports knowledge to every aspect of camp. He really
got to know his campers and encouraged the development of their
athletic skills. Colin Sundwick (U Pittsburg
‘10), a former TIC-VA athletic counselor,
came back for Session 4, bringing his
stellar sport skills and ability to relate to
kids. Chuck and Colin were excellent role
models to the younger staff and picked up
the energy of the program considerably at
the end of the summer.
Mike Archibald ( Jewell & Esk College
(UK) 2011) and Anthony Byrd (Frostburg
State U ’13) came over from TIC-DC
for one week after their site closed
to help us out, and although Mike
was a Filmmaking counselor and
Anthony a Programming/Robotics
counselor, they were willing and able
to fill in wherever needed.

is growing by leaps
and bounds. We
had a good crop of
CITs, who spent an
hour a day training
as potential future staff.
We are grateful for the talented and
hardworking bunch of Staff Assistants who lent
a hand wherever needed to help make TIC a
great camp.

At TIC
kids

having
fun!
Hope to
see you
next year
for MORE!
Goodbye
and thanks
to KJR!
Thirty years ago, Karen Rosenbaum founded a computer and sports day
camp for kids in the Washington DC area. It grew from one small site on the
campus of Mount Vernon College serving 100 campers per session to three sites
—in DC, MD and VA— serving more than 500 campers per session this past
summer. On the way we have had camps at American University, Georgetown
Visitation, Episcopal High School, Woods Academy, St. Luke’s School, the French
International School, Oakcrest School. George Washington University’s Mount
Vernon Campus, and Georgetown Day School.
Under her tenure, TIC has served over 20,000 campers and trained
and nurtured more than 4,000 staff members. We still offer a balanced day of
technology and sports, with a 4:1 ratio of campers to counselors in technology,
and 5:1 in sports. Her vision of kids learning by having fun still flourishes,
and we still work at giving each child a “Eureka moment” when they learn by
discovery. We still teach collaboration and sportsmanship and have a lot of
goofy fun!
TIC plans to carry on the legacy with competence and great style.
Thanks, Karen. Enjoy your retirement, and come back and see us!
