ATMOSAIR® WITH SELF ADJUSTING TECHNOLOGY™
ATMOSAIR WITH SELF ADJUSTING TECHNOLOGY ® ™ The only non-powered, clinically and cost-effective pressure redistribution surface system with SAT.™ THE CLINICAL CHALLENGE: Protecting the Skin in Medium to High Risk Patients Pressure Ulcers: A Significant Issue Pressure ulcers present a severe challenge for healthcare professionals globally, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality, as well as compromised quality of life for many patients. Pressure ulcers can also negatively impact healthcare facilities, resulting in increased caregiver workloads, higher costs and longer patient hospital stays. The 1999 NPUAP† pressure ulcer survey has established the following:1 15% of patients within hospitals have a pressure ulcer 50% 4.6% of patients with a pressure ulcer acquired it while in the hospital increase in overall prevalence of pressure ulcers from 1995 The 2005 EPUAP* pilot pressure ulcer study has established the following:2 18% of patients within hospitals have a pressure ulcer 27% of at-risk patients received no preventative care As a result, the healthcare industry is significantly impacted: • Pressure ulcer incidence is becoming a key indicator of care • Pressure ulcer development increases a patient’s risk of further complications (e.g., nosocomial infections, pain, delayed healing) • Healthcare providers are subject to increasing liability cases • Increasing focus from high-level key opinion leaders, opinion groups and the media † National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (USA) * European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel 1 Amlung, S. PhD, et al. The 1999 National Pressure Ulcer Prevalence Survey: A Benchmarking Approach. Advances in Skin & Wound Care. 14(6): 297-301, November/December 2001. 2 Vanderwee, K. MA RN et al. Pressure Ulcer Prevalence In Europe: A Pilot Study. Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice. 13(2): 227–235, 2007. Clinical Considerations: Risk of Pressure Ulcer Development Pressure ulcers can originate from a variety of environmental factors, including: Pressure A result of immobility, applied pressure compresses the body tissue between the support surface and a patient’s bony prominences. Clinical issue: Occludes capillary blood flow resulting in tissue damage. Shear Skin shear occurs when opposite forces acting parallel to the skin surface cause the skin to stretch or tear from the underlying connective tissue. Clinical issue: Causes capillaries to elongate, diminishing blood flow and resulting in tissue damage. Friction Friction is the resistance to motion of the external tissue sliding in a direction parallel to the support surface. Clinical issue: Leads to epidermal stripping resulting in tissue damage. THE KCI SOLUTION: A t m o s A i r w i t h S e l f A d j u s t i n g Te c h n o l o g y™ ( S AT ™ ) ® Designed to Relieve Pressure, Shear and Friction in Medium to High Risk Patients The AtmosAir® with SAT™ is a non-powered, self adjusting pressure redistribution system that helps prevent and treat pressure ulcers. Using only atmospheric pressure, Self Adjusting Technology™ delivers pressure relief for patients without the need for power. Provides Continuous Non-Powered Therapy Non-powered SAT ™ ensures no interruption of therapy, even during a power outage, so patients receive continuous care. Helps Prevent Friction and Shear As pressure reduces, body surface area contact increases, reducing shear and friction on the patient’s skin as well as the risk of pressure ulcer development. Helps Relieve Pressure SAT ™ system automatically distributes weight to relieve pressure by increasing body surface area contact, thus minimising the risk of pressure ulcer development. Self Adjusting Technology™ • Maintains consistency of care. Multiple, non-powered air cylinders and interconnected valves automatically regulate. • Administers customised therapy. Independent air cylinders. • Provides enhanced ease-of-use. Non-powered intake and exhaust valves vent to the atmosphere. Delivers Trusted Clinical Outcomes Over 2.5 million patients* treated. Comfortable for Patients, Easy for Caregivers • Features designed to support seating, shoulder, sacrum, leg and heel • Made from durable and breathable material to manage moisture • Bactericidal core material to prevent contamination • Easy to train, use and maintain3 • Non-powered technology eliminates running costs, unnecessary alarms and system breakdowns * Based on estimations from KCI internal statistical calculation for placements between 2004-2007. Estimate assumes average length of stay based on AHA Trendwatch Chartbook 2007 (Chart 3.5) multiplied by KCI internal acute care sales data @ 50% product utilisation. 3 Nixon J., Nelson E.A., Cranny G., Iglesias C.P., Hawkins K., Cullum N.A., et al.
