2014 Report to the Community - Sarnia Community Foundation

REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
OF LAMBTON COUNTY
your

your
foundation is...
a collection of funds that mirrors the hopes and
dreams of the community and the people that
have chosen to donate to the story of our past,
present and future
There is a story behind each of the gifts we received during 2014.
Some honour the memory of a loved one, some express hope for a
brighter future, and some are part of a tradition of giving. With donations increasing the endowment in 2014 by over $300,000 and a
positive year for investment, the Foundation now has assets of more
than $3.2 million.
There are stories to tell about grants we made in 2014. Some were
on behalf of our donor advised funds, some were from our community impact pool and some were made via individuals with a passion
for the community. There are stories to tell about the people who
have decided to develop a fund at their community foundation.
In this report you will find some of those stories and recognition of
the people and events that created them. We invite you to connect
with us on the web at www.sarniacommunityfoundation.ca, see us
on Facebook or call us at 519 332-2588. We would love to share
more of our stories with you and help you write one of your own
because YOU make your community and your community foundation.

The Catterson Family Fund was created in 2005 and has grown through modest gifts over the past 10 years. Although
former board member Gord Catterson
died in early 2014, the family fund will
carry on the tradition of giving back to the
community for years to come. As the fund
agreement specifies an annual grant is to
be made to Bluewater Health on behalf of
the fund.
The Link Family Fund was the first
named fund established at SCF in 1996.
Joan was first in many things and her
enduring leadership will have a lasting
impact through community impact grants
now and in the years to come.
As a former city alderman and police
commissioner, Dick Ford understood the
complexity of community and the impact
one family could have. The Dick and
Isabelle Ford Family Fund was started
in 2006 and will remain as a testament to
a belief in giving back to the community
to make it better.
The Miriam and David Glew Family
Fund, created in 2011 will continue to
support the charities the couple supported
during their lifetime.

More than 75% of the gifts we’ve received have been less than
$100 and those donors have been from every sector, city, town and
village of our county. No donation is too small to make a difference
when added to a fund at SCF.
working with donors
from all walks of life
We also get larger gifts and as part of recognizing these gifts, we
allow donors to name a fund, identify a field of interest they would
like to support or even create a special fund for a charity they care
about.
SCF currently has more than 75 funds created by donors just like
you.
Some of the new funds in 2014
The Dow Centre for Youth Endowment will provide for the
ongoing maintenance of the building that houses local organizations
providing programmes serving the youth of our community. The
fund will ensure that the tenants can remain in an affordable and
secure environment for many years.
Lambton Federation of Agriculture Fund for the Joyce Anderson Memorial Scholarship will allow a younger member of the
farming community to further their education. The fund was created by a member of the family living outside Lambton County to
honor the memory of Joyce Anderson who lived and worked with
farm families in the Petrolia area.
403 Wing / Golden Hawk Fund will provide for the ongoing
maintenance of the newly refurbished Golden Hawk and support for
young men and women who want to learn to fly.
The Soparkar Family Fund was established in late 2014 and has
been created to support local non-profit initiatives, with special emphasis on healthcare and programs for children and women.
The Kiwanis Club of the Seaway opted to house the funds for
their scholarship programme at SCF. High school and college students will benefit and by the end of 2014 three scholarships had
been awarded.
Donations to a fund at SCF make a difference in so many ways.

We are able to support registered charities and other qualified
causes in our county through our Community Impact and Donor
Advised grant programmes.
In 2014, more than 37 organizations or causes were supported with
SCF Funds. Since 1983, that’s more than 130 organizations that
have benefitted from the nearly $3 million we have granted.
Every grant SCF makes tells a story of a need that is filled, a program enriched, or a life that changes.
Huron House Boys’ Home recognized the need for their clients
to be able to cook and maintain an apartment after their high school
graduation. A 2014 Community Impact Grant provided funds for
one client’s groceries for a year and helped a young man participate
in the “Men Who Cook” event!
44 Sarnia Imperial Air Cadet Squadron needed to update the
technology cadets use when training. A Community Impact Grant
provided funds for upgrades to their training centre and supports the
growth of the squadron and the development of young Canadians.
Two donor advised funds directed funds to St. Joseph’s Hospice
for patient comfort items. This grant supports the end of life journey
and the patients and families being cared for at this facility.

making a difference in thousands of lives
A grant from the Botma Family Fund ensured that special needs
students were able to take part in summer camp activities at the
Pathways Health Centre for Children site with able bodied
peers. The grant made an enormous difference in the lives of the
children who were able to take part in the expanded programme.
A 2014 Community Impact grant provided the CNIB the means to
run low vision programmes locally. Primarily funded by the MOJEN
Fund, The New Horizons – New Dreams programme provides motivation and resources to seniors living with vision loss, as well as a
sense of companionship and mutual support for all the participants.
A 2014 Community Impact grant funded the replacement of out of
date technology at Big Brothers Big Sisters. As the two agencies
began to amalgamate it became apparent that the technology used
in the two offices was not compatible. Receiving the grant meant
that more funded dollars were directed to programmes and that the
Big Brothers Big Sisters staff could begin to share the information
needed on the same platform.

fostering the development of new skills
The Learning Disability Association of Lambton County offered two separate Family Math Gr.2-5 programs; one in Sarnia and
the other in Corunna thanks to a grant from the Les and Deborah
McDermott Family Fund. Family Math was able to help all of the
families that attended in a positive way in regards to their attitude
and comfort level with math. When parents were asked ‘How do
you feel about helping your child with math?’ the results were
astounding.
Children were asked ‘Do you like math?’ Again the results were
remarkable.
SSVP/J&JY Trades Scholarship winner Debbie Bullock will be
working with children as she enters the Early Childhood Education
Programme at Lambton College. The $1,000 scholarship was just
the boost she needed to make the transition to college and will help
ensure that the children under her care in the future have a fully
qualified teacher.
The 2014 Steeves & Rozema Scholarships were awarded to
nursing students Jenn Chad and Mia Avery (pictured) and PSW
student Marie Hall. Total value of the 2014 scholarships is over
$5,000. The number of patients impacted in the future is in the
thousands.
New skills = New Opportunities
6
SSVP/J&JY Trades Scholarship winner Nicholas Lord will be pursuing health
promotion and moving into the medical
field. His love of football and the support
of his family have been anchors in his life.
The chance to attend college and pursue
his dreams is bolstered by the support of
the second SSVP scholarship.
Music for the Soul is a new programme
at Rebound. A Community Impact Grant
of $7,000 allows the agency to run trial
sessions and gauge impact before adding it to the regular offerings in their
programme schedule. The grant is a
means for the agency to incubate a new
programme before including it in other
funding applications.
Golden K Legacy Fund supported leadership development and artistic endeavours at P. E. McGibbon School. The Sarnia
100 Then and Now project had students
involved in the history of their community
and reflecting on the differences today.
The walls and windows of the school
were filled with art work created with
the assistance of Lawrence House Centre
for the Arts and allowed the students to
realize a deeper connection with the history lessons being taught in the classroom.
This is the second year the fund has supported the activities of the school.

supporting community initiatives
A community committee came together to redevelop Kenwick
on the Lake, a park in Bright’s Grove. Working through the City
of Sarnia Parks and Recreation department, the committee rebuilt
the play structures, added benches overlooking the lake, revamped
the parking and landscaping and were the catalysts behind a
hugely popular summer concert series. SCF made an investment of
$10,000.00 over two years in the redevelopment through the Community Impact Grant programme.
As part of their 100th anniversary celebration the Sarnia Lambton
Chamber of Commerce established a scholarship fund at SCF. In
conjunction with the Physician Recruitment Taskforce and SCF
the fund has provided three scholarships annually to young doctors
encouraging them to practice family medicine in the Sarnia Lambton Area. 2014 marked the 10th and final year of the programme
under the Chamber banner.
Prior to closing its doors, the Bluewater Sustainability Initiative
developed a template for a Community Snapshot that could act as
a report card for the many areas that make up a community . The
report provided a starting point for measuring the successes and
challenges faced by Sarnia and Lambton County. SCF was proud to
be part of the committee working to produce the report, provide
sponsorship for the project and become the lead for the next edition
of the report scheduled for 2016.

making grants on behalf of fund holders
Giving Tuesday marks the “opening day
of the giving season,” and is a day where
charities, companies and individuals join
together to rally for different causes, donate locally and think about others. This
year, 26 local charities banded together to
make a difference. SCF was proud to be
part of the movement.
In October of 2014 SCF became the lead
in facilitating a programme designed to
re-engage the community in the work
of democracy. Democracy Talks is an
initiative of Samara, a nationally based
non-partisan charitable organization that
works to improve political participation in
our country.

helping good people do great things today,
tomorrow, forever
A grant from donor advised The Bernard and Maureen Wiechula Fund allows the Inn of the Good Shepherd to support its
ongoing programmes. That’s hundreds of meals served per month,
rent and utilities being secured and support for some of the most
vulnerable in our community.
2014 saw the delivery of the first Blue Eyes Big Heart Josh Alderton Scholarship. Established to honour the life of a remarkable
young man and intended to help women and children escape the
cycle of an abusive relationship as they pursue education, the award
made it possible for a family to make the break and begin a new
life. Although a tragedy led to the fund’s creation, the hope that
the scholarship brings to a family makes the burden of grief a little
lighter.
The Women’s Interval Home required safety and technology
upgrades that were not funded through their regular sources. A
Community Impact Grant funded the purchase of a defibrillator and
eye wash station needed to remain compliant with safety standards
and also allowed for the purchase of a new computer to be used by
the residents while in shelter. These items help support the clients
as they get back on their feet.
The Work Place Group wanted to refresh and grow its Bridging Loan programme which provides support to those entering or
re-entering the workforce. A modest gift of a gas card or the money
for a pair of boots can make the difference to a client and keep them
at work. A grant from the NOVA Chemicals Fund has helped to
build the bridge to a better life.
Events like the 14th annual CAN AM Jazz Jam support endowed
funds at SCF and provide grants to partner organizations. In 2014
the event supported SCF Fund for the Arts and Bluewater Health.
Dr. D and All That Jazz put on a spectacular show in support of
their community.

a responsible steward of the funds
entrusted to us
Beginning with our first donation of $25 in 1983, SCF has built a
capital base of over $3 million. We invest those funds to generate
earnings. The earnings on this capital base are the basis of the grants
we make on behalf of our donors and pay a portion of our operating
costs. The performance of our investments is carefully monitored to
ensure that we will be able to meet our disbursement obligations on
an annual basis and protect our funds.
The assets we have under management reflect both the endowment
funds and the flow through dollars entrusted to us. Our financial
operation is audited annually and the results are posted on the SCF
website once they are received by the Board of Directors. Paper copies of the audited statements are available by calling the SCF office.

Petrolia Community Fund
The first donation of $30 in 2012 has been added to over the past
two years to create a receipted capital base for this fund of over
$72,000 by early January of 2015. The Fund Committee has also received pledges from a group of founding partners that will send the
donated fund value over the $100,000 mark in the next few years.
Of course, there is no limit to how large the fund could grow.
Like many of the funds at SCF many of the donations are modest
but the community members donating to the fund are showing a
community pride and desire to build their community. In addition
to general donations, gifts have been received as a result of special
events and in honour of loved ones. The first grants from this fund
should be made in 2015 thus completing the circle of care created
by establishing the fund.
