2015 Report to the Community - Sarnia Community Foundation
COMMUNITY MEANS SO MANY THINGS TO SO MANY PEOPLE, AND THE WORLD TO US.
IN ALL WE DO AND ALL WE SAY, WE’RE ALL FOR COMMUNITY.
2015
REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
OF LAMBTON COUNTY
What Is Community?
What Is A Community Foundation?
SCF has vision for community, one that has
grown and evolved since we first began 32
years ago. It includes believing in the power
of giving to enrich our community. It includes
energy, collaboration, innovation, inclusivity,
engagement, sharing and purpose. It includes
dreaming about a vibrant community with
possibilities for all.
Focused
on today & tomorrow
People
from all walks of life
In our terms - Community is thoughtful,
committed citizens determined to change the
world they live in.
These are people who support one another,
who work on common goals, who help
people achieve their dreams, and who share
their gifts willingly.
The engine of your community and your
community foundation is a group of donors
who have entrusted us with their dreams for
a stronger community, and who provided
the funds to make it happen. We take these
funds, invest and grow them, and grant the
investment earnings to local organizations.
Their gifts to our operations and to the
many funds at SCF are the basis for what we
do. Their funds have made our community
a place to grow, to try new ideas, to share
resources, and gain new skills. Those gifts
ensure a legacy of care now and in the future.
In all that we do it’s all for community. It is
about connecting people and helping them
do great things today, tomorrow, forever.

How We Support Community
With every gift given to SCF, with every grant SCF makes and with every
project SCF undertakes, we build a segment of our community. Our funds
mirror the hopes and dreams of the community and the people that have
chosen to donate to the story of our past, present and future.
Each of the gifts we received during 2015 contributes to a better place to
live, work and play. Some of the gifts honour the memory of a loved one;
some express hope for a brighter future and some are part of a tradition
of giving. With donations increasing the endowment in 2015 by over 1.4
million dollars and a positive year for investment, the Foundation now has
assets of more than 4.8 million dollars.
The grants we made in 2015 covered a broad spectrum of endeavour. Some
were on behalf of our donor advised funds, some were from our community
impact pool and some were made via individuals with a passion for the
community. We truly believe that the quality of life in our community is
all encompassing and so made grants to the arts, culture, education, the
environment, health, recreation and social services and issues affecting the
community.
Driven to Give - A gift to SCF and the community.
Thanks to Lambton Ford Lincoln, a community
minded business that supports our work.
In this report you will find stories about our community and recognition
of the people and events that created them. We invite you to connect with
us on the web at www.sarniacommunityfoundation.ca, like us on Facebook
or call us at 519-332-2588. We would love to share more of our stories with
you and help you write your story as a builder of community because YOU
make your community and your community foundation.

Community Champions
Each member of a community contributes in their own way. In 2015, SCF
was pleased to recognize three members of our community who have
supported the vision of SCF for many years. They have been defenders,
supporters, backers, and advocates of the work we do on behalf of the
community and we’re proud to recognize them as champions.
John Rozema
In 2015, local businessman and philanthropist, John Rozema added to the
existing Rozema Family Fund at SCF with a donation of 1.2 million dollars.
As chair of the Board from 1994 to 1999, John was instrumental in creating
a robust grant process, establishing the Marceil Saddy Operating Fund and
managing the early investments in community projects. “Those early years
were pretty lean in terms of dollars under management, says John, “but
through the hard work of the Board at the time, we built a Foundation that
will be able to be responsive to community and donor needs forever. I’ve
been very fortunate to be part of this community,” he adds. “I’ve had great
support from the community while building my business and so giving
back via SCF makes sense to me.”
Don Hislop
We are pleased to celebrate Don’s quiet behind the scenes work in creating
the Golden K Legacy Fund. Designed to be a legacy for the children of our
community along with his many other endeavors, his work as builder will
be cherished for many years to come. Although often reluctant to be in the
limelight, Don was at the center of the action when the first grant from the
fund was made in 2013. We are pleased to be able to honour him with the
establishment of the Don Hislop Fund as a permanent component of the
Golden K Legacy.
Bill Palmer
Bill’s belief in the community is evidenced by the work he undertook
on behalf of children and youth during his working career and multiple
organizations he has been involved with prior to and since retirement. Bill
has been part of SCF for 12 years as a board member, worked tirelessly as
chair of the Fund Development team and has been a constant source of
encouragement.

Honouring The Memory Of A Woman
Who Cared About The Community
Joanne Klauke-LaBelle (JKL) Memorial
Scholarship was created in memory of a woman
who devoted her life to youth. She created an
environment that was free of judgement and
with a mission to create harmony in ourselves,
each other, and the world we live in through
the power of the arts – especially music. Joanne
strongly believed in volunteering and more particularly, believed
in “paying it forward”. She passionately tried every day to make a
difference and asked that those around her do the same. Joanne
created a legacy of love and music for youth in the communities of
Sarnia and Lambton County. This scholarship is intended to help
those individuals intending to pursue the performing arts or visual
arts as a field of study.

How SCF Builds A Better Community
Proceeds from the 2014 Can Am Jazz Event delivered to Bluewater
Health.
For the Sarnia Concert
Association a piano is more
than a piece of equipment.
It’s a gift they share with the
entire community. Housed
at the Imperial Theatre,
the Association allows
access to the instrument by
organizations who use the
theatre. A grant from the Val
and Rany Xanthopoulo Family
Fund and the SCF Community
Fund allowed the SCA to begin
the process of refurbishment
of this valuable community
asset.
This grant wasn’t just for the birds! Bluewater Raptor Rehabilitation
put a 2014 Environmental grant to use in redeveloping their
marketing materials and education programme.
Two donor advised funds directed funds to St. Joseph’s Hospice.
The Catterson Fund directed one of their grants towards the
provision of patient comfort items while the Golden K Legacy Fund
supported the Caring Hearts Programme. These grants support the
end of life journey and the patients and families being cared for at
this facility.
A common item in most kitchens, this salad bowl is the home of
a variety of tools that will make families stronger and help reduce
children’s waistlines. The Rapids Family Health Team is working
to bring back the family dinner to strengthen families in our
community. The kit includes recipes, conversation cards and tools
to help with meal preparation.

The Canadian Families and Corrections Network is committed
to building stronger and safer communities by assisting families
affected by criminal behavior, incarceration and community
reintegration. With the help of a grant from the Les and Deborah
McDermott Fund they brought messages of hope to Lambton
County families. An awareness day wasr held at the Sarnia Library
to educate and offer support to families and innocent children who
deal with crime.
The Charles and Alexander Mackenzie Fund made several grants
during the Christmas Season. Both Huron House Boys Home and
the Women’s Interval Home and their residents were feeling a little
more festive as a result.
Gallery In the Grove is expanding
their Visiting Artists in the Schools
Programme because of a grant from
the Grogan Family Fund. Visiting Artists
in Lambton Schools is an immensely
popular programme which takes place
in January and February. Several
artists, sponsored and financed by the
gallery, offer their time and talents
to teach specific skills to students in
seven area elementary schools. Artists
rotate through the schools so that
classes gain experience and techniques
with different media. The culmination
of this art instruction forms the
Elementary School Art Exhibition which
takes place at the gallery.
St. Clair Child & Youth Services received a grant of $5000 from the
MOJEN & McDermott funds dedicated toward specialized staff
training. This will support the second phase of an implementation
strategy to increase timely access to mental health services for
children, youth and families in Lambton County. This funding will
support the ongoing development of the children’s mental health
services such as the Walk-In Therapy Clinic and Brief Services. With
its contribution, the Sarnia Community Foundation is investing in
improving access to much-needed children’s mental health services
in Lambton County.
A community committee came together to redevelop Kenwick on
the Lake, a park in Bright’s Grove. Working with the City of Sarnia
Parks and Recreation department, the committee rebuilt the
play structures, added benches overlooking the lake, revamped
the parking and landscaping and were the catalysts behind a
hugely popular summer concert series. SCF made an investment
of $15,000 over three years for the redevelopment through the
Community Impact Grant programme. The NOVA Chemicals Fund
was responsible for the 2015 contribution.

The Catterson Fund also designated Bluewater Health as a recipient
in 2015. The grant was not restricted allowing the BWH Foundation
to direct it to the area of most need.
In 2015, Huron House Boys Home was supported by the E.C.
Fleming Fund and the Bob & Helen Noble Fund. These fund holders
have given much thought to the work of the agency and choose
to direct their grantable dollars towards the work being done for
youth.
A grant from the SCF Environment Fund will be put to work in
Plympton Wyoming as part of their tree planting project. SCF
is pleased to be able to support good people improving their
community throughout Lambton County.
St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dogs received a modest grant at
year end as a result of the Petrolia Micro Grant Process. They will
be using the funds to let the community know how to access
their service and maybe buy the odd dog biscuit . This grant was
suported by the Palmer Family Fund.
The first grants from the Petrolia Community Fund were delivered
at the New Year’s Levee in Petrolia. Micro grants of $500 each were
awarded to LCDS, New Life Assembly, The Petrolia Optimist Park
Project and Ontario Early Years Parenting Programmes by PCF
committee member Roger Mailloux.

Scholarships Awarded To Community Members
1
Susan Moffatt was a young woman with a life limiting
condition but who had a thirst for knowledge. In 1997, her
family established the Susan Moffatt Memorial Scholarship
Fund at SCF and have since given more than 15 scholarships
to students who have a personal physical challenge and
who have prevailed in spite of their challenge. In 2015 two
scholarships of $3500.00 were awarded. Both Avery Timm
, now enrolled in social services, and Byrnne Kennedy,
enrolled in respiratory therapy, are determined to make their
community proud.
2
2015 saw the delivery of the second Blue Eyes Big Heart
Josh Alderton Scholarship. Established to honour the life of
a remarkable young man and intended to help women and
children escape the cycle of an abusive relationship as they
pursue education, the award made it possible for a family to
make the break and begin a new life. Although a tragedy led
to the fund’s creation, the hope that the scholarship brings to
a family makes the burden of grief a little lighter.
3
Board Chair Nancy Kremer presented Deric Coleman with
the 2015 Lambton Federation of Agriculture Joyce Anderson
Scholarship. The donors behind the scholarship wanted to
support those in the community committed to carrying on
family farms and helping them gain the skills needed to be
part of agri-business in the 21st century.
4
The Steeves & Rozema Fund supported five scholarships in
2015. These were awarded to Health Care students, Erica
Chisholm, Lorissa Paul, Jill Bell, Colleen Jarvis and Nicole
Tiedeman. The total value of the awards was 7,000 dollars. The
number of patients impacted in the future is in the thousands.
5
The SSVP/J&JY Committee was thrilled to present two
SSVP/J&JY Trades Scholarships in 2015. Monique D’Arcy will
be completing her studies as a child and youth worker while
Brandon Zuniga will be training as a power line technician.
The fund has grown since its beginnings in 2010 to the size
that will allow the committee to give at least two $1000
scholarships annually. The founding donors Jim and Joan
Yarkovsky believed that the trades were the means to
help people help themselves and turned their passion for
community betterment into reality with a little assistance from
SSVP and SCF.

Community Supported By Donations
Beginning with our first donation of $25 in 1983, SCF has built a capital
base of nearly $5 million. We invest those funds to generate earnings. The
earnings on this capital base are the basis of the grants we make on behalf
of our donors and funds and pay a portion of our operating costs. The
performance of our investments is carefully monitored to ensure that we
will be able to meet our disbursement obligations on an annual basis and
protect our funds.
The assets we have under management reflect both the endowment funds
and the flow through dollars entrusted to us. Our financial operation
is audited annually and the results are posted on the SCF website once
they are received by the Board of Directors. Paper copies of the audited
statements are available by calling the SCF office.
Most of the gifts we’ve received have been less than one hundred dollars
and those donors have been from every sector, city, town and village of
our county. No donation is too small to make a difference when added to
a fund at SCF.
We also get larger gifts and as part of recognizing these gifts, we allow
donors to name a fund, identify a field of interest they would like to support
or even create a special fund for a charity they care about.
SCF currently has more than 70 endowed funds created by caring
community members.
Our endowed funds supply the majority of our grants. As the endowment
builds, SCF is able to become more responsive to community need.
Because we believe in supporting community initiatives, SCF works with
short term projects that will provide long term benefit to the community as
a whole. Flow through project and grants are for time limited projects and
are part of SCF Charitable Activity. The amount of money in these funds
varies from year to year. Not all flow through dollars are spent in a single
year.
The funds at SCF are the foundation of all the work we do for community.
