OF FAME BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Sergio McClain
Manual High School, University of Illinois
e 1997 Illinois Mr. Basketball, McClain helped Peoria Manual High School to four consecutive IHSA
Boys Basketball state championships during his prep career from 1993-97. A three-time all-state selection,
McClain continued his basketball career at Illinois, where he played in 128 games and helped the Illini to a
pair of Big Ten Conference championships and the 2001 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
A. J. Guyton
Peoria High School, Indiana University
Guyton was a two-time, first-team all-state selection as a boys basketball player at Peoria High School.
After his graduation in 1996, Guyton starred at Indiana, where he was selected the team most valuable
player all four seasons while scoring more than 2,100 career points. e 1997 Big Ten Conference
Freshman of the Year, Guyton was a consensus All-American in 2000, when he also was selected the Big
Ten Player of the Year. A member of the IU All-Century Team, Guyton was the 32nd overall selection in
the 2000 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls and he played in 80 NBA games in two seasons with the
Bulls and Golden State Warriors.
Mary Ellen Hill-Schupbach
Princeville High School, Bradley University
Hill-Schupbach starred in the area as both a prep star and collegian, first at Princeville High
School then at Bradley, as one of the area’s top female distance runners. After winning four
conference championships in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters at Princeville, Hill-Schupbach
claimed 10 Missouri Valley Conference cross country and track individual championships at
Bradley from 1996-2000, while also twice earning NCAA Division I All-America honors in
the 5,000 meters. In addition to her individual titles at the 1998 and 1999 Missouri Valley
Conference Cross Country Championships, Hill-Schupbach led the Braves to their first-ever
conference crown in any women’s sport in school history as co-champions with Drake in 1998. A seven-time Academic AllAmerican, Hill-Schupbach received a prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and was the recipient of the inaugural Dr.
Charlotte West Award as the year’s top all-around, graduating student-athlete in the Missouri Valley Conference. She also was
selected the Illinois NCAA Woman of the Year in 2000.
Walt Durdle
Old Timer Inductee
Representing Peoria Woodruff High School, Durdle
was the medalist of the 1950-51 IHSA Boys Golf State
Championship. He went on to win the Peoria Men's
Golf City Championship in 1952 and 1958 before
becoming the head professional at the Peoria Park
District’s Newman Golf Course. Durdle died in 2001
and will be inducted posthumously.

THE TEAMS
1976-1977 Washington Girls Basketball Team
e Panthers capped an 18-4 campaign by finishing as the runners-up
in the inaugural IHSA Girls Basketball state championship tournament,
falling to an undefeated Sterling squad in the title game. Coached by
Jan Smith, the 1977 Washington squad was led by Nancy Roth and
Glenda Simmerling.

Induction Banquet
1993 Pekin Boy's Golf Team
Led by current PGA Tour professional D.A. Points, the 1993 Dragons
enjoyed a perfect (11-0) dual meet season. After advancing in the state
series with a second-place finish in the regionals, Pekin went on to win
the sectional tournament, as well as the IHSA Boys Golf Class AA state
championship. Points led the charge to the team title by earning
individual medalist honors at the state tournament.

1981-1982 ICC Men's Basketball Team
e Cougars were 25-12 in 1981-82 when they won the last
single-division Illinois Junior College state tournament and
advanced to the NJCAA national tournament. ICC's run to
the Illinois state title included an upset of top-seeded Wabash
Valley. Washington product Randy Holzhauer poured in 26
points in the championship win against Lincoln.

Larry Leitner
Larry Leitner was among the state’s
elite officials for more than 40
years, officiating high school, college and professional sporting
events from 1960 through 2003
and he remains involved in sports
by serving on the board of directors
for the Pekin Insurance Holiday Tournament, as well as evaluating current officials and moderating IHSA rules clinics.
Among his officiating highlights, Leitner worked more IHSA basketball and football tournament games than any official in the
state’s history, earning 27 consecutive boys basketball regional assignments. He also worked the IHSA boys basketball state finals
in 1973, 1974 and 1976, including the 1976 championship game,
and three IHSA football finals, including the first-ever 2A state
championship game in 1974. A charter member of the Gateway
Conference officiating crew in 1988, Leitner was part of the crew
that officiated the 1990 and 1993 NCAA Division I-AA quarterfinals and he served as an associate official for the Big Ten Conference from 1984-88.
Leitner also was called upon to officiate two IESA state championship games, the 1990 National Catholic Basketball finals, three
Shriner All-Star football games and the 1980 IBCA All-Star Classic, while also working for two seasons in the Midwest Professional Football League.
Leitner is a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association, Peoria Officials and Bloomington/Normal Officials Halls of
Fame.
It Happened in Greater Peoria
Sports History
e Peoria Socials Athletic Club was a popular sports club in Peoria.
It started in February 1900 with just $12 in its treasury. It was incorporated by the State of Illinois in 1905 and had its headquarters
at 901 North Adams. A Chicago newspaper called it the greatest sports
club in the Midwest. eir annual banquet was attended by national
sports figures such as heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney. In
the early 1920s the great Red Grange was a greeter at the White Swan
Inn on Big Hollow Road. He was there to help promote the struggling
Lawrence Orchestra that was playing there. Grange was quoted as
saying he was inspired by the Peoria Social Sports Club.
Chuck Wolfe

Chuck was a member of the 1953 and 1960 Caterpillar Cats Basketball teams that were inducted into the
Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. Chuck was an outstanding high school and college basketball player
in North Dakota. He was named all-conference forward three times as a member on the University of North
Dakota basketball team. He was a managing partner of Halstead & Wolfe Realtors for more than 35 years.
B. Michael “Doc” Higgins

Doc was in the original group that founded the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame. He served as its president
for 22 years. He also was events doctor for the Bass Masters Tournaments, e Professional Bowling
Association and Peoria TT Motorcycle Races. He opened Higgins Chiropractic Clinic in Peoria in 1978.

Tri-County Male Athlete of the Year
Cole Henderson
With three individual state championships to his
credit, Henderson’s 31 points at the 2013 IHSA
3A Boys Track and Field Championship gave
Pekin Community High School a third-place
team finish. Henderson won state titles in the long
jump, 100 meters and 200 meters. An all-conference wide receiver
on the grid iron, Henderson returned from a hip injury to help the
Dragons football team win its final three regular-season games to
earn a playoff berth.
Tri-County Female Athlete of the Year
Taylor McClintock
McClintock capped her all-star prep career by averaging 29.5 points per game on the basketball
court last winter, helping Illini Bluffs High School
to 29 wins and an appearance in the IHSA 1A
Girls Basketball state finals. e three-time Peoria
Journal Star Small School Girls Basketball Player of the Year and
first-team IBCA All-State selection ended her career last winter
with 3,073 points. She is currently a freshman for the Mercer University women’s basketball team in the NCAA Division I Atlantic
Sun Conference.
Tri-County Male Coach of the Year
Darrel Crouch
e football head coach at Washington Community High School, Crouch led the Panthers to a
final 12-1 record. e Panthers earned an undefeated, Mid-Illini Conference championship and
won 12 consecutive games to start a season for the first time in
program history. Following the devastating tornadoes Nov. 17,
Washington’s run ended in the IHSA 5A state semifinals.
Tri-County Female Coach of the Year
Cathy Sanders
e girls volleyball head coach at Fieldcrest High
School, Sanders led the Knights to their first-ever
state finals appearance, finishing the year with a
33-4-1 record and fourth-place finish in the IHSA
1A state tournament.
The Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame’s mission is to promote the many
and varied sports programs in the Greater Peoria area (Peoria, Tazewell,
and Woodford Counties). Our aim is to honor those men, women and teams
that have contributed to the area’s rich sports history. With the cooperation
of the Peoria Civic Center Commission, and generous community support
we have served the area since 1979.

He was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 as a member of the Gipps Jr All Stars.
Bob was an-outstanding 3-sport athlete at Spalding Institute. He lettered in baseball at Notre Dame and
Bradley Universities and after college he played minor league baseball for the Peoria Chiefs. He graduated
from Notre Dame Law School and practiced law in Peoria. He was appointed states attorney in 1967 and
retired as Chief Judge of the 10th Circuit.
Larry was past president of the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame and was an officer in the several Peoria
area sports organizations including Old Time Baseball Association, Independent Sports Club, and Bradley
Braves Club. He owned and managed Coleman Printing for 35 years and retired in April 2013.

Elmo was an outstanding athlete at Peoria Manual. He was a member of Manual’s undefeated 1949 State
Championship Baseball Team that was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. He was
also a member of Manual’s 1949 and 1950 undefeated football teams that were both inducted into the
Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
A special thanks to the donors who contributed to the soon to be constructed Inductee Recognition Wall located in the Peoria
