Products will still be in the catalog but we will rely on the website for more detail. The catalog will help you find solutions for your problems and answers to your questions. It can be a valuable tool for you to use when talking to your friends about riding recumbents. This will be done by integrating the catalog with our new website where you will find a wealth of information about recumbent bikes and trikes. Everything from maintenance and shifting strategy to defensive riding and defensive dressing is now on the Hostel Shoppe website along with much more. In addition, stories about how other customers solved their problems are very informative and you are invited to submit your stories to the “Testimonials” knowledge base of our website. In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, the Hostel Shoppe catalog is now available in PDF format. Catalog requests, on our website, will automatically be fulfilled with a PDF catalog, which facilitates regular updating and greater accuracy. However, we recognize that not all of our customers live in the virtual world and may prefer a printed copy of the catalog. Printed copies of the catalog will be available upon request. www.hostelshoppe.com 3 Finding the Right Recumbent Bike or Trike For You Recumbent bikes and trikes are available in a variety of designs, shapes and sizes. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by all the choices. Helping you sort this out is what we do. What’s best for you guides the entire process. You will have the opportunity to visit with us about everything related to your riding. Then, with a complete picture of your riding situation, we can quickly help you pick out two or three bikes or trikes to test ride. Your ability to test ride is crucial to making the right decision and the test riding facility at the Hostel Shoppe is second to none. You can ride on our paved test track or on several nearby bike trails. All the roads in the Portage County Business Park are lightly traveled and have bike lanes. Nearby country roads are lightly traveled and we frequently send customers out on longer test rides with maps and que sheets. We make it easy for you to get “out of the parking lot” and test ride in an environment similar to what you have at home. When you are done with this process you will know, from experience, which bike or trike is best for your needs. - Rolf Garthus 4 800-233-4340 Advantage • Exceptional comfort without compromising performance. • Aerodynamic body position lets you laugh at the headwinds. • Open body position for optimal muscle group recruitment. • Easy to remove/re-install seat: programmable seat settings and quick release. • No slip, easy seat adjustment. • Choice of mesh or carbon seats. • Low friction chain management for easy climbing and overall efficiency. • Accessory friendly design. • All frames made in the U.S.A. Instead of viewing it as one or the other, why not increase your riding fun by having both? One day while riding my trike, I met a friend on his mountain bike. Usually he would be on his road bike but not this time. It hit me like “a ton of bricks”. Of course; conventional bike riders frequently have both a mountain bike and a road bike. Two different experiences turning a crank. Recumbent trikes are another enjoyable way to ride and get exercise along with all the health benefits. Give it a chance and you will quickly find that you prefer the trike over the bike for certain rides. - Rolf Garthus 10 800-233-4340 • Super-oversized main frame tube. • IPS - Ideal Position System. • Comfortable and ergonomic mesh seat with passive suspension from the seat mesh. • Indirect steering with great handling and a short turning radius. • Wide range of options and accessories. • Quality craftsmanship from the Czech Republic. People often experience more discomfort on an upright tandem than on an upright single bike. Stretching or shifting around on the tandem is more difficult since it needs to be done in unison. If either member of the tandem team is uncomfortable, the team will not be doing as much riding. A recumbent is the solution to keep them riding as a team. We have experienced no downsides to riding a recumbent tandem, and it’s been our experience that recumbent tandems climb as well as upright tandems. Barb and I have been riding recumbent tandems since 1996 and it has become our favorite way to travel. We have many fond memories of B&B tours through the hills of the Coulee Region near LaCrosse, WI, day trips in central Wisconsin and traversing the State on GRABAAWR. We have ridden a variety of Rans, Vision and Volae tandems. Various tandem trikes are also great options if you want to travel in comfort and not have to worry about balance. Some of them can even be uncoupled to be used as single trikes. - Rolf Garthus www.hostelshoppe.com 19 Advantage • Exceptional comfort without compromising performance. Cycling is also a low impact sport on the body. For a variety of reasons, many people have not been able to enjoy the benefits of cycling, but with today’s variety of recumbent trikes and a number of adaptive aids, the world of cycling is now open to many members of the disabled community. Adaptive cycling is a multi-disability sport, where we take a stock cycle and adapt it to the needs of an individual rider, and since no two disabilities are identical, a variety of adaptations can be made. We’ve helped a number of adults and children with various disabilities from Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, birth defects, injuries from accidents, etc. get back out and enjoy the sport they love. Adaptive aids run the gamut from special pedals with or without lower leg braces, crank shorteners, two-into-one brake levers for one handed braking, moving the controls to one side or the other, cane holders, electric assist, seat belts, etc. Call us at 800-233-4340, email us at [email protected] or visit us at the store for your personal consultation. With the ever changing needs of today’s bicycling population, many customers are turning to electric assists for a variety of reasons, whether it’s for commuting, adaptive cycling for a physical disability or a long range touring assist. The BionX™ system provides an innovative mobility solution for a number of recumbent bikes and tadpole trikes available in today’s marketplace. Its intuitive technology supports you with additional power that is proportional to the power that you apply to the pedal. The harder you pedal, the more support you get; when you ease off the pedals, you receive correspondingly less support. When you stop pedaling, the system also stops delivering assistance. Every single step on the pedal is analyzed individually by the control processor. Your power is balanced, so you can fully enjoy your trip. Choose from a variety of options with BionX™: The BionX Touring Series e-bike systems are perfect for day-to-day city commuting or for leisure rides on the weekend. With proven, award-winning BionX technology, combining a long 80 km (50 mi.) range with compact Li-Ion batteries, the Touring Series is powerful, versatile, stylish and fun! You’ll want to ride every single day. It includes a hub motor built into a 20“ (406mm) wheel, rack mounted battery (Li-Ion/48V), rear rack, controller and long wire kit. The battery contains a state-of-charge indicator and a charging circuit (no more bulky charger) and a DC power output for powering accessories. It is rim or disc brake compatible and the hub is threaded for use with a 6 to 9 speed freewheel (not included). Regenerative braking charges battery during braking resistance. Sport Series: Super lightweight system. An extra–long range of up to 105 km (65 mi.) on a single charge. Enough power and torque to handle anything the road or the trail has in store. The rider’s helmet is at the same level as the Civic driver’s eyes. Also, the overall height of the rider is only about 10” less than the overall height of the Civic. Ride Right Remember that we share the road with automobiles. Always be aware of traffic and avoid riding in the middle of the lane or worse, the middle of the road. Some riders get comfortable with riding in the middle of the road. These same riders tend to ride up hills and around blind corners in the middle of the road. Always ride as if a “distracted driver” is about to come speeding over the hill or around the corner. This will increase both your safety and the safety of your riding group. Defensive Dressing Safety flags are recommended. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that, because you have a flag on your trike, you don’t need to dress brightly. In the photo (near right) the flags are not visible but the rider dressed in the neon yellow is easy to see, even at a distance. The photo (far right) shows the same riders closer to the camera. Even here, the rider’s bright clothing completely trumps the flags for visibility. 26 800-233-4340 Recumbent Trikes – Bike Shoes and Clipless Pedals Bike shoes and clipless pedals are highly recommended for both safety and efficiency reasons. If your foot slips off the pedal and hits the ground it can get pulled back under the cross member of the trike frame and cause an accident, injury or both. Since you are on a trike, you don’t have to worry about doing the embarrassing “Laugh-In fall” at a stop sign while trying to get unclipped from the pedals. Clip in when you start and don’t worry about unclipping until you are ready to get off your trike. Study the diagram below to understand the inefficiency of riding a recumbent (trike or bike) without clipless shoes and pedals. - Rolf Garthus www.hostelshoppe.com 27 Comfort Without Compromise Recumbents offer uncompromising comfort. You get all this comfort without compromising efficiency, plus you get a better view. You ride with every part of your body in a natural, and thus, very comfortable position that can be effortlessly maintained on long rides. The large seat and backrest comfortably supports you. Hands, shoulders, neck, back and butt are all happy from the beginning through the end of the ride. Whether you ride with a group of “riding club hammerheads” or prefer to ride more leisurely you can find a recumbent that is properly matched to the required amount of efficiency and speed. When you switch to a recumbent you trade in a view of pavement and ditches for a view of sky and fields. You will love the uncompromising improvement in the view. It’s not only better, it’s safer. - Rolf Garthus 28 800-233-4340 Accessory Checklist Having the right accessories can make a whole lot of difference on whether or not you have a good ride or not! That’s why Hostel Shoppe has the “Custom Shoppe”; to help you configure the right bike to suit your riding style and maximize performance. Customizing a bike can take many different forms. It can be as simple as starting with a stock bike, and upgrading the rear derailleur to something better for crisper shifting. Or, if you have trouble using twist shifters, we can upgrade a trike to bar end shifters to make it easier for you to use. If you need to lower your gear inches to climb hills more easily, we can customize the chainrings and cassette for your needs. Tires can be swapped out to suit the terrain you are riding on. We can also special order bikes and trikes from Volae, ICE, HP Velotechnik, Azub and Hase with different options than the base models we stock. Options can include Schlumpf drivetrains, Rohloff drivetrains, brake upgrades, suspension upgrades, plus more. Custom colors are also available from some companies. We can also take a frameset and build it up to your specifications. For example, we have done a number of Volae Carbon 650c frames in custom colors and 10 speed drivetrains with a carbon crank option. The possibilities of what we can do to build your dream bike or trike are endless. Please email [email protected] or call her at 800-233-4340 ext. 302 for your custom quote. Hostel Shoppe Recumbent Guarantee If any recumbent bike purchased from the Hostel Shoppe proves unsatisfactory; you may return it (using the same shipping materials) within two weeks of the delivery date (30 days for a Volae bike purchase, since we are the exclusive dealer). You will be charged 5% of the purchase price of the bike as a rental/demo fee and we will refund the balance of the bike, less any damage assessments, to you. You will be responsible for freight charges both ways. We will refund half the price of any accessories used during the two-week test period. Please call us at 800-233-4340 for a return authorization. *This guarantee only applies to US residents in the contiguous 48 states. Return guarantee applies to stock configurations only - highly customized or modified bikes are not returnable. Accessories purchased with your bike are returnable for full value only if unused and uninstalled. Due to Federal regulations, our shipper cannot pick up from a residential address, so your returned bike must be taken to a business address for pick up. Guarantee only applies to new bikes or demo bikes with a warranty. Does not apply to used bikes or trade-ins. Recumbent Packaging All recumbents are fully assembled and test ridden before shipping. Some reassembly is required. Visit our web site or call us for complete details on how each bike is packaged and shipped. If you lack the proper tools and experience, we highly recommend taking the bike to a bike shop for reassembly and adjustment.
