Living Legacy
Louise Morrison – A
Lifetime of Service
T
here is a quote from
Adlai Stevenson that goes
“It’s not the years in your life, but
the life in your years that counts.”
It is safe to say that Twin Towers
resident and 2013 Voices of Giving
award recipient, Louise Morrison
has had the best of both worlds. In
her 100 years, Louise’s life has been
extraordinarily full. As a devoted
Methodist Deaconess, an avid
volunteer and a loving wife, Louise
has worn many hats and gathered
countless friends in her long and
rich life.
Louise’s life in the Methodist church
began at baptism. It is fair to say
that her parents could not have
imagined the career in the church
that Louise would carve for herself in
the decades to come. Her tenacity,
however, was evident from a young
age when she sought out a job
with the post office in Columbus
after overhearing a conversation in
the supermarket. This job helped
put Louise through college at
The Ohio State University (OSU).
Louise transferred from OSU to
the National College for Christian
Workers in Kansas City, Missouri
where she graduated with honors
as a Deaconess of the Methodist
Church. She moved to Philadelphia,
upon graduation, and began what
would become a long career with
the Methodist Church. Louise was
eventually called to New York when
she was assigned to the Women’s
Division of the United Methodist
Church in New York City. Out of this
Louise graduating from the
National College for Christian
Workers in 1934; Louise today.
office, Louise went on a speaking
tour that took her to each of the 50
states and throughout Europe.
In 1960, Louise married her longtime
friend, Lew Morrison. They first met
in seventh grade and discovered
they were neighbors. They dated
from that time until Louise graduated
college, at which time they went
their separate ways. After Lew’s wife
passed away and Louise had devoted
herself to the service of the church for
many years, they found each other
and rekindled their romance. Louise
and Lew were truly meant for each
other and they moved to Cincinnati,
where they became members of the
Westwood United Methodist Church.
Louise is still an active member of
Westwood United Methodist Church
to this day.
Louise, at age 100, is not done
living life to the fullest yet. She is a
volunteer at Twin Towers, working in
the gift shop on Thursday afternoons.
She is a loyal friend to many at Twin
Towers and stays close with many
from the Westwood United Methodist
Church. Louise has become a Living
Legacy by bequeathing a portion
of her estate to Life Enriching
Communities. As Molly Talbot, Vice
President Life Enriching Communities
Foundation, says, “Louise went
wherever she was led throughout her
life.” We are blessed that she was led
to Twin Towers.

Jim Hengelbrok Honored
by Ohio Bar Association
T
Twin Towers’ resident Jim Hengelbrok recently
was honored by the Ohio State Bar Association for
65 years of practice in law. Jim was a general practitioner,
a term that is uncommon today, which means he practiced
in most types of law including probate, tax, corporate, real
estate and trial.

Twin Lakes Adopts Read
Aloud Program
I
nspired by the Read Aloud 15 Minutes campaign,
Twin Lakes created a lending library program for
associates. Twin Lakes’ resident, Hazel Kendle, familiar
with the program through her daughter who is involved
with the national Read Aloud 15 Minutes organization,
spearheaded the effort to establish this lending library
designed to encourage associates to read to their children
for at least 15 minutes every day.
Read Aloud 15 minutes is a national campaign that
champions the importance of reading to children for
15 minutes a day. Research has proven that this assists
in making children more ready to learn when they
enter kindergarten, gives them literacy skills they need
to succeed in school and prepares them for a more
productive and meaningful life after school.
Associates are encouraged to utilize this new lending
library, found within the Twin Lakes library. Follow the
success of the program on our Facebook page and visit
the Read Aloud 15 Minutes website at readaloud.org for
more information on their organization.

It was in high school in
Northern Kentucky where
the seed was planted
that Jim should consider
attending Law School.
A family friend was the
headmaster at his high
school and when Jim was
turning in his exams the
headmaster asked him
what he planned to study
in college. Jim told the
Hengelbrok
headmaster he wasn’t sure,
to which the headmaster
suggested that he has a mind that was fit for the practice
of law. “I got that advice every day, twice a day from the
headmaster and it stuck!” Jim said.
Jim received his Bachelor of Arts from Xavier University
in 1942 and was admitted to Law School at the University
of Cincinnati (UC) in June of 1942. His studies were
interrupted when he was called to active duty with the
Enlisted Reserve Corps in April, 1943. Jim was discharged in
March of 1946 and continued his Law education, finishing
in February of 1948. On March 17, 1948, Jim was admitted
to the Ohio State Bar Association and began practicing in
Ohio. Subsequently, he was admitted to the Kentucky State
Bar Association.
A career as expansive and dedicated as Jim’s was obviously
had by a man who loved what he did. The recognition
from the Ohio State Bar Association for his service is an
important acknowledgement of a rare achievement. To serve
one’s field of practice for 65 years, a certain joy must be
had in the job that’s being done. As Jim says “I had a lot of
fun practicing law and I enjoyed every minute of it.”

Kay Craig: 45
Years of Service
to Twin Towers
A
midst much celebration, on March 27th,
2013, Kay Craig retired from Twin Towers
after 45 years of service. Quite a notable achievement
and not very common this day in age.
Kay began working as a housekeeper at Twin Towers
in 1968. While her duties and floors may have changed,
Kay spent her entire time at Twin Towers working for the
Housekeeping/Environmental Services Department. She
worked on both the second and the fourth floors and saw
a fair amount of change in her 45 years of employment.
When Kay first began working for Twin Towers, there were
no time clocks!
Kay witnessed the renovation of the Twin Towers buildings,
the addition of patio homes and the North Apartments,
The Connection, The Gulden Community Center and most
recently the new Health Pavilion. When asked how she
managed to work for one organization for such a long time,
Kay replied “I just didn’t let the bad outweigh the good.”
Kay thoroughly enjoyed the relationships with the

Executive Directors Rev. Dr. Joseph
Graham (left) and Scott McQuinn

Director, Jim Lay (center).
residents,
something she
will miss dearly.
“I’m not really concerned with filling my time once I
retire,” laughs Kay, “my girlfriends will keep me busy”.
Kay was an exemplary associate at Twin Towers; self
motivated and reliable, Kay truly lived the mission and
values of Life Enriching Communities. She displayed her
stellar work ethic on a day-to-day basis. In honor of her
service at Twin Towers, the “Kay Award” has been created
to recognize individuals that demonstrate exemplary
performance on a day-to-day basis, like Kay did. This
award will be given out quarterly. Twin Towers and Life
Enriching Communities would like to thank Kay Craig for
her 45 years of service to the organization!
The Kay Award
These individuals personify the values and
mission of the organization, and do so
without the need for frequent supervisory
intervention or direction. These individuals
are those who are “heroes” not because
they step up and solve crises, but because
they perform so well that they (or those
they serve) do not encounter problems due to the Associate’s
relentless excellence in ongoing performance. These individuals are often
lost and forgotten in the chaos, because they are so reliable that they do not
require others’ attention for them to perform at exceptional levels.

construction came to fruition with the
completion of the new Health Pavilion
in December, 2012. This new home,

nursing services. The first floor,
complete with outdoor garden
space, is home for Memory Support

The building, designed by SFCS
and constructed by Lend Lease,

residents for nearly 50 years.
The Health Pavilion and Renovation

ife Enriching Communities residents and
associates donate thousands of hours of their
time in service to the Twin Lakes and Twin Towers
communities as well as organizations in the general
community. Volunteer time and talent is shared with our
partnering organizations including LaSalle High School,
St. Vivian’s, Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Sycamore
High School, Montgomery Elementary, to name a few.
Additionally, many of our volunteers come from the
general community to support the programs and services
of Life Enriching Communities.
This year, Twin Lakes’ residents participated in the
“Pillowcase Ministry” where pillowcases are used to make
dresses for less fortunate young girls. Over 600 dresses
have been made and distributed to places such as Haiti,
Mexico, Africa and Nicaragua. Students from Madeira
Middle School made dresses that were brought to Twin
Lakes for distribution in Haiti.
