HAVANA
! March 2013
Havana’s third Peace and Love concert will take place on March 8 and
9, 2013. Organized by Fábrica de Arte Cubana in Salon Rosado de la
Tropical, this features an all-star lineup including X Alfonso, Obsesión,
Santiago Feliú, DJ Ivan and a number of visiting international artists.
Sex in the City is still going strong at Galeria La Acacia where the
homoerotic smorgasbord of art from many of Cuba’s best artists has
had its run extended.
There is a festival of Danzón (March 28-31) and performances from
Danza Contemporánea (March 1-3) and the Ballet Nacional de Cuba
company (March 15-17).
Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope in Havana takes place on Saturday
March 9, 2013. If you can participate, do.
Cuba’s first paintball club has recently opened its doors, which offers a
great juxtaposition of elements down in Vedado. As does the British
Union flag craze which has swept the city. We have more restaurant
reviews, updates to the best bars in Havana and much more…
We hope you enjoy this review. Any feedback and/or notices about

THE SPLENDOR OF CUBA: 450
YEARS OF ARCHITECTURE
AND INTERIORS
by Michael Connors.
It presents not the picturesque Cuba of Castro's era, with its
derelict buildings and peeling paint, but the opulent world
of the Spanish Creole aristocracy of the colonial period, with
its Mudejar craftsmanship and baroque palacios, the
sugarcane plantations (ingenios) and coffee plantations
(cafetales), and classically inspired grand mansions.
Exceptional preservation work has kept these villas in the
magnificent state in which they were first envisioned. The
photographs, shot exclusively for this book, show examples
in each area of the island—from the interiors and exteriors in

Havana’s most buzzed about art exhibition in years:
A smorgasbord of homoerotic art brought together
under the guidance of curator Piter Ortega. The
lineup features such internationally recognized
artists as Roberto Fabelo, Rocío García, Duvier del
Dago, Humberto Díaz, René Peña, Jorge López
Pardo, and Adonis Flores, as well as younger artists
whose work is emerging in art-world circuits:
Lancelot Alonso, Stainless, Yenisley Yanes, Tai Ma
Campos, Álvaro José Brunet, William Acosta, and
Julio Ferrer, among others. The idea behind this
generational intermingling is to stimulate a
dialogue around the homosexual discourse in art in
all its facets: gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender.

IBRAHIM MIRANDA: FROM
CUZCO TO THE SUGAR
FACTORY
by Ricardo Alberto Pérez
A painter, engraver, and professor, Ibrahim Miranda is
one of the most talented Cuban artists who has
received significant recognition over recent years.
Miranda reinterprets his vision of this island with
poetry, expanding its borders and physical limits so as
to make it universal. He uses suggestive icons, such as
the alligator, the sleeping Indian and the tracing of
history as a way to know our interior selves—make us
reflect on our origins and their worth.

FITO PÁEZ: STILL IN LOVE
WITH HAVANA 20 YEARS
LATER
by Ana Lorena Fernández
Rodolfo "Fito" Páez Ávalos recorded in Havana for the
first time in 1988. More than 20 years later he was back
in Havana for the world premiere of El amor después
del amor [Love After Love]…The Karl Marx theatre
must have been over the 5,000 capacity, for every
space was filled, every aisle, every corridor. Towards
the end of the show, Fito sang a capella a favorite song
among his fans the world over: Yo vengo a ofrecer mi
corazón—I Am Here to Offer my Heart—which is exactly
what he did.

FIESTA DEL TAMBOR “GUILLERMO BARRETO
IN MEMORIAN.”
Mar 5-10, 2013
This festivity of percussion pays tribute to one of the cult figures of
Cuban percussion: Guillermo Barreto, star of the Tropicana
orchestra in the 1950s and founding member of the Orquesta
Cubana de Música Moderna. While young talents measure their
skills during the competition, experts disclose the secrets of the
complex Cuban percussion at theoretical meetings, lectures and
guest speeches and the evenings are dedicated to the
performances of popular national and international bands and
soloists.
Cuba’s leading percussion event will start Comparsa de la FEU and
Los componedores de Batea. Besides performances, exhibitions,
lectures, master classes and concerts, the best popular music
bands in Cuba will be playing at different venues. The prestigious
International Percussion Competition will also be in session at the

SANDRO MILLER: IMAGINE
CUBA (1999-2007)
Nothing short of spectacular, this is a
stunning and sensitive body of work,
which has at its heart pictures of Cuban
athletes who Miller photographed in 2001
at the invitation of the Cuban sports
ministry. From this original basis, Imagine
Cuba 1999-2007 evolved as a collection of
Miller's lush color and black-and-white
portraits of athletes, young and old,
against the backdrop of Cuba's streets
and gyms. Rick Logan suggests that
“more interesting and compelling to me
are the shots of less acclaimed or
handsome folks, those he calls the people
of Cuba on the streets."
Sandro himself writes, "The people of
Cuba provided me with faces that told a
million stories—stories of war, of love, of
heartache and pain, of hard work and
determination—faces beaten up by the
sun and the heat, but most of all faces that
still had pride running deep within the
pores of their skin.”

Paintballing at Club Arena

“Cover me, I’m going in.” However much you disagree with war, I think there is a space inside everyone
where you want to twist and turn under withering enemy fire to blow up the enemy headquarters, to
sneak on your belly behind enemy lines capturing them unawares, to put a “fire in the hole.” (Maybe I
have simply seen Platoon too many times!) In any event, Cuba now has a space where you can express
your inner warmongering without having to sign up with the French Foreign Legion. It is the Paintball
Club Arena, which opened its doors on February 14, 2013 at the Centro Recreativo José Antonio
Echeverría, courtesy of young Cuban entrepreneurs Yaigel Roque and Reinier Méndez.
The Paintball Club Arena is located at the José Antonio Echeverría recreation center on Calzada y 12,
Vedado, Havana. It is open Mon-Fri from 4-6pm and at the weekend from 10am to 6pm. Expect to pay
around CUC 20 per person.

March 7-12
Movie theatres Cuba and Rialto, Santiago de Cuba
Created in 2000, this festival highlights the prominent role of
the documentary, a film genre with a tradition of significant
quality and acknowledgement in Cuba, thanks partly to the
work of the late prize-winning Cuban film-maker, Santiago
Alvarez. Although the festival began as a national event
throughout the years it has attracted the attention of a
number of filmmakers from Latin America, Europe and the
United States. With films in competition, parallel screenings
and theoretical discussions, the Festival constitutes a space for
exchanging opinions and experiences among filmmakers and
lovers of this genre. The 2013 festival will be dedicated to

FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE LA TROVA PEPE

March 19-24
Casa de la Trova y Sala de Concierto Dolores, Santiago de
Cuba
This Festival began in 1962 in homage to local Santiago de Cuba
composer José (Pepe) Sánchez (1856-1918), considered the
father of Cuban trova (the troubador genre of voice, song and
poetry that is usually accompanied by a guitar). Several
generations of musicians from different musical trends within
trova participate in this event, including exponents of more
traditional trova, of filin (an evolution of bolero and trova), and of
nueva trova (the very Cuban genre of personal commentary
influenced by British, US and Brazilian popular music). Santiago
de Cuba—the cradle of trova—hosts this festival which takes the
city’s streets and parks by storm in a celebration where
musicians and singers from abroad join their Cuban
counterparts. The opening day commemorates the anniversary
of the birth of Pepe Sanchez.

The Union Flag sweeps Cuba
by Sofia Beckman
2012 saw the 250th anniversary of the capture of Havana by a British expedition of five warships and
4,000 troops, which forced Havana to surrender in August of 1762. This anniversary saw various
events held in Havana although ironically it was the London Olympics, which has raised the Union Flag
across the Cuban Capital. Perhaps raised is not the correct word, for while the Union Flag may not
adorn too many flag posts outside of the British Embassy it does now adorn the shoes, t-shirts, bags,
hair and nails and even bodies of the young and not so young Habaneros who have taken this symbol
and made it into a fashion symbol that has swept the city.

Elena's up and downs to dining out in Havana?
by Elena Vega
The year is still looking optimistic for the paladares in Havana and also for us, the food enthusiasts that
like and appreciate good food, nice places and friendly service while dining out. The result again: the
“downs” are not that bad and the “ups” are easier to find. Keep it up Havana restauranteurs!
DOWNS:
The prices at Black &White:
This is a paladar located in Vedado, in a second floor apartment in Calle 12, a few blocks away from the Colon
Cemetery. The concept is of an elegant dining room decorated in black and white. Nevertheless, the result is
not quite right; the place looks a little bit cheap. But those are just the looks, because the food is far from cheap.
The normal pork plate costs 15 CUCs, chicken… the same, beef… likewise, and if you decide to order shrimp, be
prepared to pay 18 dollars or more. The food preparation is average, so I believe it would be wise for this
restaurant to make a field trip to competitors in the area to realize they are overpriced and that the recipe for a
healthy business may be to increase the quality and decrease the prices.
Calle 12 No. 508 e/ 21 y 23 apto 1. Tel. 836 9301.
The lack of menus at Partenón and Doctor Café:
Anyone who knows me or who has read this column knows these two are among my favorite restaurants in
Havana. The quality of the food and the service is really some of the best on the island, but one thing that has
always annoyed me is that neither has a menu. Anyone who goes to these two could expect a waiter’s
monologue that goes pretty much like this: “Today we have chicken, beef, snapper, shrimp, lobster, crawfish…”
and if one wants details on how any choice would be cooked there is another monologue: “grilled, in sauce, with
garlic, breaded…” and of course there is no information about the prices until the check comes, which may
carry some surprises, by the way. It would be a great improvement for them to have detailed menus, with prices
included.
Partenón: Calle 50, # 1109, entre 11 y 13. Tel. 209 0405.
Dr. Café: Calle 28 No. 111 entre 1ra y 3ra. Tel. 203 4718.
The hours at Le Chanssonier:
There are not many downs one can find in this beautiful restaurant. As said in previous columns, the food is
good, the décor is superb, the service is friendly, the prices are not bad, and on top it has an amazing display of
art and a very good looking bar in case someone wants just a drink. Nevertheless, one bad thing that I can find in
this restaurant is that they do not open for lunch. It would be a great addition to the lunch options in the city; I
just hope they expand their hours.
Calle J No. 257 entre Linea y 15, Vedado. Tel. 832 1576.
The closing of La Galeria:
This is sad news for the restaurant community in Havana. This
paladar opened on the right foot in an elegant setting in
Vedado, with friendly staff and delicious food, then started to
decline in quality some months ago that unfortunately ended
up with their recent closing. Hopefully the spot will be filled
again with another interesting gastronomic option and
hopefully some restaurants will learn from this experience:
listen to criticism with an attentive ear in order to prevent a
similar destiny. It is not a secret: the customer is always right!

Elena's up and downs to dining out in Havana?
by Elena Vega
UPS:
Sandwiches at Punto G:
Don’t dress up to visit this place. This is a simple,
unpretentious, informal and yet nice little spot in Vedado, at
the corner of G and 17. The menu is simple and includes
hamburgers, salads, juices, smoothies, and sandwiches. These
last ones are particularly good and at a more than reasonable
price. Punto G fits in the niche of casual places in Havana, and if
you want something more than a smoothie and a sandwich you
can go for it, maybe a cocktail and a shrimp entrée.
Calle 17 No. 360 esq. G. Vedado. Tel. 832 8354.
The ravioli to go at La Terraza Romana:
This Italian paladar has been open for about a year and is located in the terrace of a house a few blocks from
Ciudad Libertad. There are many “ups” in this place, including the wood oven baked pizza, the fresh pasta, the
reasonable prices, and the nice seating. There are some “downs” too, like the fact that their food tends to be
underseasoned. But one of the big “ups” is the take-away ravioli, and by that I don’t mean a prepared dish of this
filled pasta, I mean taking your fresh pasta uncooked, to be frozen and prepared whenever you want to impress
your guests or enjoy quality pasta by yourself.
Calle 29E No 7409, entre 74 y 76, Marianao. Tel. 207 1707.
The falafel at the Atelier:
This is such a good looking restaurant in Vedado and with
consistently quality food that nowadays is difficult to get in
without a reservation. It is set in an old house located in Calle 5
and decorated by original art (mostly for sale, by the way), and
with table settings that highlight antique china and glassware.
The food is good, I personally love the filet mignon and I have
heard wonders about the rabbit. But one thing I can’t resist is
the falafel, the Middle East-inspired appetizer, totally
vegetarian and made with chickpeas, served with a yogurt
dressing. Order it next time, not an easy treat to find in Cuba.
Calle 5 entre Paseo y 2, Vedado. Tel. 836 7075.
Fried shrimp legs at Calle 10:
This delicacy that most restaurants (I am sure) would just
throw away, has a better destiny in the hands of the skillful chef
of Calle 10. This is not on the menu, so be sure to ask when you
arrive if they have “pechitos de camarones,” and if they do, they
will serve you this platter of little legs attached to the chest of
the shrimps, battered and fried to perfection. They go like
popcorn and they are addictive! And even if they don’t have
fried shrimp legs that day, go to Calle 10, one of the best
restaurants in town.
Calle 10 No. 314 entre 3ra y 5ta, Miramar. Tel. 205 3970.
